Our Ministry First Friends is organized and operated as a part of the total ministry of First
Presbyterian Church, Huntsville, Alabama. The tuition and fees support the sala-
ries of the teachers as well as the overall operating expenses of the program.
Our Christian preschool staff has a deep concern for the total development of each
child and the well being of the child’s family. Well-trained and dedicated teachers,
enthusiastic and cooperative parents, and the committed support of First Presbyte-
rian Church are the necessary components for our outstanding program.
Our Mission Our mission is to provide a weekday early childhood Christian education program
for children ages 12 weeks through PK; to nurture children of First Presbyterian
Church and the community; to support the evangelistic effort of First Presbyterian
Church in order to bring new families into the church membership; and to serve as
a preparatory school for entrance into public or private school Kindergarten.
We intend to be partners with parents in providing a loving Christian atmosphere
where children can grow socially, academically, physically, and spiritually. It is
our belief that children should have a safe and secure environment where they can
develop their curiosity, imagination, and creativity. First Friends will nurture the
whole child through a careful balance of planned activities and free play.
Registration Registration for the next school year begins the first week of February in this or-
der:
Week One Presently enrolled children and siblings
Week Two First Presbyterian Church members
Week Three Community at large
Admission Requirements All required forms must be completed and returned to the Director along with the
annual supply fee and the first month’s tuition by Open House, or prior to the
child’s first day of attendance if during the school year. If you registered your child
during the formal registration period, you paid the registration fee at that time.
Forms to be returned are:
1. Registration Form with Parent Agreement (due at registration)
2. Blue Immunization Form “Blue Card” (completed by Physician)
3. Admission Form
4. Medical Emergency Form
5. Stay & Play Enrollment Form (required for all students, except Infants)
Class availability is subject to change depending on enrollment.
3
We follow the guidelines of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice
(ACIP) of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of
Pediatrics (AAP) regarding immunizations. We will not accept families unwilling
to adhere to these immunization schedules.
Parents may withdraw their child from admission upon request, but are responsi-
ble for the tuition for the current month. Parents must give a written two-week
notice to the Director in order to not be responsible for the next month’s tuition.
Children are accepted into our school in order to benefit from group experiences in
this setting. We reserve the right to drop any child from admission upon two
weeks notice to the parents involved. The Director will try to assist parents in
assessing possible needs of the child and offer suggestions for further evaluation.
Class Placement Class placement of children will be determined by their age on September 1st. This
is the policy cut off date used by the Alabama State Department of Education.
Admission is granted on a first come, first served basis. In July an admission
packet, including all necessary forms and class assignments, will be mailed to all
accepted students. Please bring the admission forms to Open House in August.
Class availability is subject to change depending on enrollment.
Children entering the Three-year-old class must be potty trained

Please give tuition payments to the Director, place in the lockbox on the business
administrator’s door, or put in their tote bag folder. Refunds are not given for days
missed due to illness, holidays, or inclement weather.
Infant Tuition Policy This policy pertains to an infant who is registered for the following school year and who is not yet born or not 12 weeks old:
We require the $75 registration fee to “hold a spot’ in an Infants Class for a
child less than 12 weeks old or one not yet born. Children are eligible to attend
First Friends infant class at 12 weeks of age. Once the infant reaches 12 weeks of
age, full tuition becomes payable whether parents choose to send the baby to First
Friends or wait until a later date of their choosing. First Friends will bill parents
for the tuition when it becomes due based on the baby turning 12 weeks of age. If
during the interim time of birth-12 weeks, we have a request from another parent to
fill the spot being held, we will call the reserving parent to inform them there has
been a request for the spot. If the parent would still like to “hold the spot,” they must
begin paying tuition for the child, immediately regardless of the child’s eligibility to
attend based on age.
Calendar A school calendar for the following school year is published in the spring after
the Huntsville City Schools approve a calendar. You can find the calendar in the
back of this handbook. In most cases all City Schools holidays are observed by the
preschool.
Inclement Weather Policy Preschool classes will not be held when weather conditions prevent safe operation.
First Friends will follow the inclement weather schedule of the Huntsville City
Schools as follows:
♦ If the Huntsville City Schools are closed, we are closed.
♦ If the Huntsville City Schools are delayed we will delay an extra 30 minutes.
Ex: HSV City opens at 9:30 a.m., First Friends will open at 10:00 a.m.
♦ If the Huntsville City Schools close at or before 1:00 p.m. First Friends will
close 30 minutes before.
Ex. HSV City are closing at 11:30 a.m., First Friends closes at 11:00 a.m.
Many teachers have children to pick up at the Huntsville City Schools, so your
promptness of picking up your children is greatly appreciated.
5
Communication Communication between First Friends and the families it serves is vital. We hope
to keep the lines of communication open using the following tools:
This handbook
A monthly newsletter via email and/or hardcopy
First Friends Facebook page
Calendars and notes sent home by teachers
Daily conversations with teachers or the Director
Formal conferences with teachers or the Director by appointment
Student evaluations & Progress Reports
Parent visits
REMIND text messaging System (free and easy to use)
Open House First Friends Open House takes place prior to our first day of school in August.
You can find the date for Open House on our school calendar in the back of this
handbook. This event serves as a wonderful tool for acclimating the children to a
new classroom and new teachers. Also, the day serves as a time for parents to turn
in required paperwork and pay fees for the upcoming school year. We strongly
encourage all parents and children to attend if possible.

First Friends Morning Carpool Rules
Hours: 8:50 to 9:10
Carpool refers to children who are 2, 3 or 4 years old.
Infants (i) and Ones (1s) are carried in by parents. Parents of i/1s should use the street parking on Lincoln Street or
Gates Avenue. (orange arrows)
Twos (2s), Threes (3s), and Fours (4s) use the carpool. (blue arrows)
*If you have both age groups, please use the carpool first and then drive around and park for the i/1s, using either Gates or Williams to reach your parking spots.
Carpool will be in the parking lot at the end of the alley.
This way we will be OFF the streets.
2s/3s/4s parents will enter the parking lot from either Greene Street or Gates Avenue and proceed respectfully
(allowing others to merge as needed) through the lot toward the alley.
The alley will be ONE WAY during carpool hours.
CARPOOL BEGINS AT 8:50 a.m.
A teacher will be at the end of the alley and will take your child out of the car seat and help them inside through the Education Wing door. Then you will proceed onto Eustis in either direction.
*For those with i/1s, follow the orange arrows and
you can park anywhere on Gates or Lincoln.
TEACHERS will be parking in the lot so NO PARENTS will park in the lot.
The lot will be for teachers/staff parking only so there will be no moving cars during carpool
other than those using carpool.
8
Arrival and Pick-up Our hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Drop
off is from 8:50-9:10 and pick up is from 12:50-1:10.
Infants and 1s: Infants and one-year-olds must be dropped off and picked up
from their rooms by their parents or designated caregivers. Parents of infants
should enter through the main office doors on Gates Avenue. Please see the map
below for where to legally park. No double-parking please.
2s, 3s, PK:
Morning carpool drop-off runs from 8:50 a.m. until 9:10 a.m.
For the safety of our little friends, and for quiet and focus time for their learning,
the education wing doors will remain closed but unlocked during the school day.
Doors will be open from 8:50 to 9:10 each morning and 12:50 to 1:10 each after-
noon. If you are in the education wing between 9:10 am and 12:50 pm, you need
to have a guest pass from the front office. We request that you wait until regular
pickup time if possible. This is for the benefit of all the children.
Children not picked up by 1:10 p.m. will be taken to Stay & Play and assessed the
Stay & Play fee of $15.
If children are to leave the school with a person other than the parents or desig-
nated caregiver, you must send a signed note or have them on the Carpool Release
List. If you need to leave, transfer, or pick up a car seat, you need to bring it into
and pick it up from the Fellowship Hall. All car seats need to be labeled with the
child’s full name.
Stay & Play
Stay & Play is offered Monday-Friday for 1s-PK from 1:10-3 p.m. Cost is $15 per
day. A monthly total will be added to your next months tuition bill. Ex. October’s
Stay & Play bill will be added to November’s tuition bill. Stay & Play is a fun free play
environment for your child where they can spend some extra time with friends in
the safety and convenience of our school. We have a quiet classroom and nap cots
available for children who may need a rest.
To have your child attend Stay & Play please do the following:
-Submit the Stay & Play Admission Form (should be submitted with Admission Paper-
work)
-Let us know by 9 am if your child will stay that day. You can tell us by sending a
note in your yellow folder or telling us at drop-off.
-Send a Stay & Play snack and drink for your child.

Field Trips First Friends strives to provide our students with diverse learning opportunities
while always maintaining a safe and well-supervised environment. Therefore, our
3s and PK classes may go on off-campus field trips when the following guidelines
are implemented:
1. Children shall never be taken on field trips out of Madison County.
2. Two week notice of the trip must be given to the parents.
3. Written parental permission must be obtained for a child to participate in a
field trip.
4. Parents can choose to transport their own children to and from a field trip or to
have their child ride with another parent.
5. A seat belt or properly installed child car seat will be used with each child. If a
parent decides that their child will ride in another parent’s car the child’s par-
ent will install the car seat in the vehicle in which the child rides.
6. If there is a fee associated with the field trip the money is due before or on the
day of the field trip.
Curriculum Young children learn through active exploration of their environment through
child-initiated and teacher-selected activities. Children’s learning can be clarified,
enriched and extended through a variety of appropriate early educational experi-
ences that expand and clarify the ideas, concepts, language and social skills chil-
dren gain spontaneously.
Child development is a complex and emergent process of ever-increasing skills and
abilities where each period of growth is preceded by a brief, and at times turbulent
regression. Four general principles of development help chart the amazing devel-
opmental changes that take place during the first four years of life:
1. Growth for children follows a universal and predictable sequence in the 5
areas of development-physical, social, emotional, cognitive and language.
2. Each child has an individual pattern and timing of growth.
3. Development proceeds from the simple to the complex or from the general
to the specific.
4. Children develop their bodies from the top down and from the center out
as demonstrated when a baby learns to hold their head up, sit supported,
sit unsupported, pull to stand and finally walk.
First Friends provides a safe, secure and loving environment in order to promote
the development of every child socially, academically, emotionally, and spiritually
with the above mentioned developmental knowledge. We foster the acquisition of
language skills, reading readiness, math and science skills, interest in music and
art, cognitive skills, self-help skills, problem-solving skills, fine and gross motor
skills and the basis for spiritual knowledge and growth.
10
Infants and 1s:
Infants are on individual schedules as determined by their parents and imple-
mented during school by their teachers. Scheduling the infant and toddler’s day is
more complex than scheduling older children’s days, however, infants and 1s need
the same things all children need-stimulating, safe environments, time for outdoor
play and fresh air, a variety of play choices that vary throughout the day and
warm, nurturing interactions with adults. Tickling toes, playing peek-a-boo, talk-
ing to children during diaper changes, getting the child to hold a cup after eating,
etc., become the core interactions with babies. In addition our infant environment
provide a variety of stimulating things to manipulate, touch, watch, follow, taste
and so forth. By the time children are about 14-16 months old, mobility allows
teachers to plan and implement a more systematic daily schedule with group mu-
sic, circle time, arts and crafts and developmentally appropriate activities to help
facilitate learning in all developmental domains.
2s and 3s:
The classroom experience for the 2s and 3s is designed to provide a rich and fun
learning and play experience by following a daily activity format to match the ever
changing needs of each child. Our program and activities specific to the education,
emotional, and developmental needs of each age group meet learning objectives
across all 5 areas of development to help every child reach their potential. For this
age group learning is accomplished through seasonal units, small and large group
time activities along with center based activities. We also provide an emphasis on
an appreciation for God’s world and His love for us. Social and classroom behavior
skills, such as sharing, helping others, playing together, learning to walk in a line,
using inside voices, etc., are also worked on throughout the year.
Pre-Kindergarten (PK):
Our PK class is designed to prepare the four-year old child for Kindergarten the
following year, as well as, provide a rich and exciting preschool experience for
every child. We use the Beginning to Read, Write and Listen Curriculum along
with the Huntsville City Schools’ Readiness Curriculum Guide as a teaching guide-
line. One of our main goals is to build self-esteem and confidence in each child,
giving them an excitement about the learning process and an appreciation of God’s
world. Evaluations are completed in the Fall and Spring to monitor each child’s
progress and to determine his/her readiness in social, emotional, and academic ar-
eas. Pre-math, pre-reading, and pre-writing skills are worked on throughout the
year using a variety of fun activities. Part of each class day is an “open” environ-
ment where children are offered a variety of learning experiences allowing them to
make decisions about how to best use their time. Children are taught to be respon-
sible for themselves in the areas of self-control, cleaning up, completing projects
efficiently, sharing, learning to raise their hands, using manners, walking in a
straight line, etc. Craft activities are designed to promote fine and gross motor
skills, as well as to promote the child’s imagination.
11
Snack and Lunch Due to a variety of food allergies and dietary needs First Friends does not supply
snack. Please send a snack, lunch and drink with your child every day to school.
You will be informed at Open House if there are any allergies in your child’s class.
Holidays and Birthdays We celebrate several holidays throughout the year. Please utilize the sign-up
sheets posted in the classroom during Open House if you would like to help.
Birthdays may be celebrated at school and your child may bring special treats for
the class if you like. However, you are required to schedule, in advance, a day and
time with your child’s teacher to celebrate as well as discuss any allergy and die-
tary restrictions children in the class may have.
Clothing Children should wear comfortable play clothes to school. Tennis shoes or other
sport-type shoes are recommended. All coats and outside clothing should be
labeled with your child’s name. Children should have a seasonally appropriate
change of clothes in their bags or stored in the classroom.
Special Events We have special events during the year to encourage family involvement. They are:
Spirit Day, Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Program, Daddy’s Night, Mother’s Day
Art Show as well as two Scholastic Book Fairs.
In the Bag Please pack a change of seasonal clothing in your child’s tote bag and remember to
put your child’s name on all items. Those in diapers need extra diapers that can
be left at school or in their tote bag.
Toys We prefer that children not bring personal toys to school. Many toys are unsuit-
able for group play and can cause disagreements among friends. Books are a
wonderful alternative as they can be enjoyed by the entire class. Please help us
by being selective if a child insists on bringing something to school.
Discipline Each child who comes into our program is a unique individual with God-given
personality and behavior, with this knowledge we strive to recognize our role in
developing appropriate social behavior in the child without compromising the
enthusiasm or physical and emotional well-being of each child. Each staff member
will respect these differences in behavior, unique personalities, and varying home
environments within limits that do not exceed typical behavior for a child of a
given age, considering no physical harm is being done to other children in the class
by the misbehavior.
12
Parents will be given a handout at Open House which will present the general
rules of their child’s classroom as determined by the Director, and presented in a
positive fashion. (i.e. children will use inside voices inside, and outside voices out-
side; children will share and cooperate; children will be considerate of others, and
will keep hands, feet, and teeth to themselves, etc.) Parental involvement and sup-
port is necessary in our efforts to introduce and maintain appropriate classroom
behavior in the children. Appropriate behavior is critical in classroom manage-
ment, and reflects the fact that a child respects themselves, others in the class-
room, the facility, and the authority of their teachers as it concerns their safety
and well being.
The techniques listed below are the only ones that will be used in disciplining
children at First Friends:
1. Positive reinforcement (praise of appropriate behavior)
2. Time-out within sight of a staff member (the child may be removed to the Direc-
tor’s office if the child is so disruptive the teacher cannot continue to conduct
class in manner safe for all students)
3. Denial of classroom privileges (lunch and snack are not considered privileges
and will not be denied under any circumstances)
At no time will any form of corporal punishment be used, nor will verbal abuse,
shouting, or humiliation be allowed or tolerated.
In cases of severe behavior problems, deemed as such by the Director, parents will
be notified by the teacher and/or Director and asked to reinforce our discipline
efforts in order to have continuity of appropriate behavior between home and
school. A First Friends Discipline Agreement will be available for use in this situa-
tion that will detail the area in need of improvement, and the staff/parent-agreed
approach to increase behavioral improvement through staff efforts in the class-
room and reinforcement at home.
We want to insure that every child is safe while in our care. Our program provides
for an environment that encourages and promotes cooperative interaction, respect
for others and non-aggressive problem solving between children. In the event a
child is injured at school by their own misbehavior or the misbehavior of another
child, or by an accident a First Friends Incident Report will be completed. The
Incident Report will be signed by the parent, teacher and Director. The name of a
child that injured another will be protected and will not be released to the other
parents. The parents will receive a copy of the incident form once signed by all
parties and the original will be kept on file at school.
No child will be excluded from our program unless:
1. All avenues for improvement have been exhausted and there is not evidence
of improvement after a predetermined period of time as agreed upon by the
13
parents and Director.
2. The other children in the program are genuinely in danger of physical harm as
a consequence of the child’s misbehavior.
Any situation coming to this point will be dealt with on an individual basis with
the involvement of all relevant staff members, the parents, the Director and the
Pastor of First Presbyterian Church.
Health Policies Sometimes it seems that little children should wear a warning label stating,
“This child may be hazardous to your health.” As every parent, grandparent and
preschool staff member knows, little children share their sneezes, their saliva, and
their dirty hands freely and willingly with everyone! Maintaining the health of the
children in our program as well as those who work with them is an important
responsibility.
First Friends staff will not administer medication of any kind (either prescription
or over-the-counter) to any child. The only exception will be granted for children
with a prescription for an Epi-Pen for use in case of anaphylactic shock brought on
by allergic reactions. Parents of children with an Epi-Pen will be required to have
a Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan on file in the Preschool office
and displayed in the classroom. This Care Plan must be signed by parents and the
child’s Physician. Teachers of children with Epi-Pens will receive training by a
Physician, at the expense of First Friends, on the proper usage and administration
of the Epi-Pen.
Student Illness Policies Deciding when to keep your child home from school can be difficult. When a child
is sick and needs to stay at home, parents should contact the school and describe
the illness and symptoms. If a medical provider makes a specific diagnosis (strep
throat, flu, conjunctivitis, etc.,), we ask that you let the Director know.
Parents are requested to exercise their good judgment in determining the suitabil-
ity of sending their child to the Preschool when any of the following symptoms are
present.
There are three reasons to keep (exclude) sick children from school:
1. The child does not feel well enough to participate comfortably in usual activi-
ties, such as with signs of extreme tiredness or fatigue, unexplained irritability
or persistent crying.
2. The child requires more care than the school staff is able to provide without
effecting the health and safety of the other children.
3. The illness is on the following list of symptoms or illness for which exclusion is
recommended.
14
The following list gives guidelines and recommendations from the Centers for Dis-
ease Control (CDC) for exclusion from school due to illness. Children with minor
illness need not be excluded unless one or more of the following exists.
A child who has any of the following mentioned illness should NOT be sent to or
return to First Friends until the criteria for medical exclusion are no longer appli-
cable.
Should a child become ill during the school day or come to school with symptoms
requiring medical exclusion the Director will call and notify the parents to return
to First Friends to pick up the child in a prompt manner.
