2015-16 PROGRAM MATERIALS | IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGE D: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS < 67 >

1. Intent of the Challenge: To solve this Challenge, the team will create and present an improvisational Skit that takes place in a Confined Space. Preparation for the Skit will take place in front of the Appraisers and the audience right before the Skit is presented. During the Preparation time, the team will determine how it will integrate 4 Improv Elements into the Skit. The 4 Improv Elements are: Confined Space, Mysterious Stranger, Miscellaneous Prop, and Newsflash.

2. The Skit: The team will have 3 minutes of Preparation time to create an original improvisational Skit in which all scored action must occur within a 6ft x 8ft (1.83m x 2.44m) space. The team will then have 4 minutes to present the Skit to the audience and Appraisers. The intent of this Challenge is for the team to be creative within a limited space. Team members are allowed to enter and exit the 6ft x 8ft space as needed, but anything that occurs outside the area will NOT be scored.

a. The team will earn points for the originality and creativity of the Skit. (C.1.a)

b. The team will earn points for the effective incorporation of the 4 Improv Elements into the Skit. (C.1.b) Improv Elements are considered to be effectively incorporated when they are seamlessly and naturally integrated into the Skit.

c. The team will earn points for a well-executed overall story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. (C.1.c)

d. The team will also earn points for the overall effect of the Skit. (C.1.d)

3. Improv Elements: The following 4 Improv Elements must be included in the team’s Skit: Confined Space, Mysterious Stranger, Miscellaneous Prop, and Newsflash.

a. Required Improv Element 1: Confined Space Before the tournament, the team will research the Confined Spaces listed in Table 1. For this Challenge, a Confined Space is a physical location that is enclosed and/or limits movement in some way.

b. Required Improv Element 2: Mysterious Stranger

i. A Mysterious Stranger is a real or imaginary character that is not revealed to the team until its Presentation time. The Mysterious Stranger must be portrayed by a team member. Some examples are a woman who has just won the lottery; a talking carrot; a boy selling lemonade; an overworked restaurant server; a ship captain, etc.

ii. In the Prep Area, the team will randomly select 1 tournament-supplied piece of paper that indicates the Mysterious Stranger that will be integrated into the Skit. The Mysterious Stranger will not be revealed to the team and audience until after the 4-minute Presentation time begins.

iii. Immediately before the 4-minute Presentation time, the Timekeeper/Announcer will place the piece of paper listing the selected Mysterious Stranger in a designated place outside of the 6ft x 8ft space.

iv. The team must designate 1 team member to portray the Mysterious Stranger. The Timekeeper/Announcer will ask the team to indicate this 1 person before the Presentation time begins. This person must remain with the other team members for the duration of the 3-minute Preparation time. At any time after the 4-minute Presentation time begins, the person designated as the Mysterious Stranger may pick up the piece of paper and enter into the Confined Space. It is up to the team member designated as the Mysterious Stranger to reveal who or what he or she is to the team members in the Confined Space and the audience through acting skills, actions and/or words.

v. The team will earn points for the creative portrayal of the Mysterious Stranger in the Skit (C.3.a), and for the integration of the Mysterious Stranger into the Skit. (C.3.b) The Mysterious Stranger does not need to be the main character in the Skit, but should be portrayed long enough so that the character is obvious to the Appraisers.

c. Required Improv Element 3: Miscellaneous Prop

i. Before the tournament, the team will plan and practice making Miscellaneous Props out of newspaper. For this Challenge, a Miscellaneous Prop can be a costume, set piece, device, or other object, etc.

ii. The team will bring its own unaltered newspaper or newsprint to the tournament. For this Challenge, newsprint is the paper on which newspapers are printed. All newspaper must fit in a commercially made plastic bag no larger than 13 gallons (49 liters). The plastic bag must not be used in the Skit. All newspaper brought to the Presentation Site must be removed from the tournament and disposed of properly.

iii. Any part of the original newspaper may be used to create the Miscellaneous Prop, including glossy, colored inserts. The team must not use sample products or other items commonly included with newspapers, in-cluding bags of any material or rubber bands, etc. Newspapers with commercially printed words and pictures are acceptable to use as a material, but the pre-printed words and pictures must not be incorporated in any manner into the Skit.

iv. The Miscellaneous Prop must be created entirely out of 1 or more pieces of newspaper. The team must not use any additional materials, such as tape or scissors, to create its Miscellaneous Prop. The Miscellaneous Prop must not be attached to or combined with clothing or accessories in any way. For example: stuffing paper into pants or a shirt to hold it in place or creating a tool and then putting it through a belt loop, etc.

v. During the 3-minute Preparation time, team members will create the Miscellaneous Prop as they work to plan how they will incorporate the other Improv Elements into its Skit. The team may create additional props, but only 1 will earn points for this element. The team should identify the Miscellaneous Prop for the

Appraisers before the 4-minute Presentation time begins. The team may continue to create and/or modify the Miscellaneous Prop during the Presentation time.

vi. The team will earn points for the creative use of the newspaper to create the Miscellaneous Prop, and for the integration of the Miscellaneous Prop into the Skit. (C.4.a-b)

d. Required Improv Element 4: Newsflash

i. A Newsflash is a word or phrase that could be used as a caption, headline, status update, hashtag, or label.

ii. In the Prep Area, the team will randomly select 1 tournament-supplied piece of paper that indicates the Newsflash to be integrated into the Skit. Examples include: “These pizzas are delicious…and poisonous!”; “Cow Spills Milk, Starts Crying!”; “Black Cats, Bad Luck?”; “My application to travel to Mars was accepted!”; “#Tarantulas,” “#NationalDessertDay,” etc.

iii. Immediately before the 3-minute Preparation time, the Timekeeper/Announcer will reveal the Newsflash for the team to include in its Skit.

iv. The team does not need to say the Newsflash word-for-word during the Skit. However, the Newsflash must be presented during the Skit in a way that is obvious to the Appraisers.

v. The team will earn points for the effective use of the Newsflash to help create, develop, and/or enhance the Skit. (C.5.a) The team will also earn points for the integration of the Newsflash into the Skit. (C.5.b)

4. Teamwork: An entertaining improvisational Skit requires great teamwork! During the team’s 3-minute Preparation time and 4-minute Presentation time, the team will earn points for its ability to work together, to plan, to move the story along and improvise together. (C.6.a)

5. Team-Provided Items:

a. Forms: The team should prepare and bring five copies of the Tournament Data Form and one copy of the Dec-laration of Independence (found in the Rules of the Road) to the Prep Area. See the Tournament Data Form at the end of the Challenge for specific instructions.

b. Team Identification Sign: The team should provide a free-standing Identification Sign of approximately 2ft x 3ft (.6m x .9m) displaying its Team Name, Team Number, School/Organization Name, and Level. The sign will be used only for the purpose of identifying the team during the Presentation and cannot be used for anything else. See “Team Identification Sign” section in Rules of the Road for further information.

c. Research Notes: Research notes created by the team prior to the tournament may be used as reference materi-als during the team Preparation time, but may NOT be used during the team Presentation time. Research notes may be handwritten, typed by the team, photocopied, or electronically duplicated. The following are not consid-ered research notes: books, pre-written scripts, pre-written jokes, pre-cut templates or models, drawings, and team generated lists of ideas for scenarios, characters, etc. The team may NOT bring pencils or paper for planning.

d. Props and Materials: Newspaper and newsprint are the only materials the team may bring to the tournament. Newspaper must be in its original form and unmodified prior to the 3-minute Preparation time. The team cannot bring physical props, scenery, and/or wear costumes to use in the Improvisational Challenge. A costume is anything that has been worn or altered prior to the tournament with a specific solution in mind. Graphics on shirts or other clothing are acceptable, as long as they do not contribute in any way to the Challenge solution.

e. A clean copy of this Challenge may be brought to the Presentation Site. It must be without team notes.

2015-16 PROGRAM MATERIALS | IMPROVISATIONAL CHALLENGE D: CLOSE ENCOUNTERS < 71 >

1. Honoring the Intent of this Challenge: The intent of this Challenge is to create a unique improvisational Skit based on the specific combination of Elements selected at the tournament. Prior to the tournament the team is encouraged to prepare for the many possible combinations of Improv Elements it may receive by generating different scenarios, experimenting with the materials, creating potential characters, and mixing and matching the various Improv Elements in practice sessions. It is expected that the team may choose to use and include some of the ideas that come from its practice sessions when combining the Improv Elements chosen randomly at the tournament into its unique Skit. As long as the team does not bring its ideas for scenarios, potential characters, etc. into the Presentation Site in written form, using the ideas is acceptable and is in keeping with the intent of the Challenge.

If a team moves on to another level of tournament and by chance selects one or more of the same Improv Elements, it is encouraged to create another original solution, but no deduction will be taken if it reuses parts of an earlier solution.

2. Expense Report: No Expense Report form is required for this Challenge.

3. Clothing and Accessories: Items of clothing or accessories worn by the team must not be used as a part of the Skit. If clothing and/or accessories are incorporated into the Skit, they will be considered props and will result in a deduction. Team members may wear wristwatches for time management. The wristwatches can be worn during the Skit but must not be incorporated into the solution in any way. For example, a team member saying “Dad will be here in 2 hours” after looking at his or her watch is using the watch as a prop, and this is not allowed. No other timing devices will be allowed and the only “official time” is that kept by the Timekeeper/Announcer.

D. TOURNAMENT PROCEDURECLOSE ENCOUNTERS

1. Prep Area: The team will arrive at the Prep Area 20 minutes before its scheduled Presentation time. The Prep Area Appraiser will check to see whether the team has the required forms (5 Tournament Data Forms, 1 Declaration of Independence) properly completed and that the research notes comply with the rules given in A.5.c. At this time, the team will select all Improv Elements that will be integrated into the Skit.

a. Selecting Required Improv Element 1: Confined Space: The team will randomly select a tournament-supplied piece of paper with a number on it. The team will give the piece of paper, without looking at it, to the Prep Area Appraiser. The number on the piece of paper corresponds to one of the numbers of the team’s researched Con-fined Spaces, as entered on the Tournament Data Form. The number selected determines the Confined Space for the Skit.

b. Selecting Required Improv Element 2: Mysterious Stranger: The team will randomly select a tournament-sup-plied piece of paper and give it, without looking at it, to the Prep Area Appraiser. The piece of paper will indicate the Mysterious Stranger for the Skit.

c. Selecting Required Improv Element 4: Newsflash: The team will randomly select a tournament-supplied piece of paper and give it, without looking at it, to the Prep Area Appraiser. The piece of paper will indicate the News-flash for the Skit.

2. At the Presentation Site:

a. The Presentation Site is the room where the team’s Presentation takes place, and includes areas occupied by the Appraisers and the audience. The Presentation Area is a specially marked portion of the Presentation Site where the team will present. The recommended Presentation Site for this Challenge is an auditorium, music room, or cafeteria with good acoustics and stage space appropriate for a theatrical Presentation.

b. The Presentation Area will be at least 8ft deep x 10ft wide (2.44m x 3.05m). The Confined Space will be a marked area that is exactly 6ft deep x 8ft wide (1.83m x 2.44m). All scored action must occur within the 6ft x 8ft space. The intent of this Challenge is for the team to be creative within a limited space. The team is allowed to enter and exit the 6ft x 8ft space as needed, but anything that occurs outside the space will NOT be scored.

c. The team may NOT attach any items to any surface at the Presentation Site.

d. While at the Presentation Site, the team shall not solicit any responses from the audience. The team must not involve the audience in the Presentation in any way.

3. Presentation Procedure:

a. Introduction: The Timekeeper/Announcer will introduce the team to the audience. The Timekeeper/Announcer will announce Improv Elements 1 and 4 (Confined Space and Newsflash) for the Skit. The team will be provided with a written copy of the Newsflash.

b. Preparation Time (3 Minutes): The team will be told to “BEGIN” its Preparation time. The team will have 3 minutes to prepare a Skit based on the 2 announced Improv Elements and to create its Miscellaneous Prop with the team-supplied newspaper. During the Preparation time, the team is free to consult its research notes (if any), and its unmarked copy of the Challenge. At the end of exactly 3 minutes, the Timekeeper/Announcer will say, “STOP.” The team must immediately stop preparing for the Skit and return all research notes and the Challenge to the designated area. At this point, the Timekeeper/Announcer will ask the team to show the Appraisers and the audience the Miscellaneous Prop that is to be scored and to identify 1 team member as the Mysterious Stranger. The team may keep and refer to the written copy of the Newsflash during its Skit.

Page 10: 2015-2016 IMPROVISATIONALrussellelem.weebly.com/uploads/5/6/6/8/56683845/... · Before the tournament, the team will research the Confined Spaces listed in Table 1. For this Challenge,

< 74 > © 2015 DESTINATION IMAGINATION, INC. | DESTINATIONIMAGINATION.ORG

i. Before the start of the team’s Preparation time, the Timekeeper/Announcer will place the paper listing Improv Element 2, the Mysterious Stranger, in the designated place outside the 6ft x 8ft space. The team member identified as the Mysterious Stranger may retrieve this paper at any time after the 4-minute Pre-sentation time begins.

c. Presentation Time (4 Minutes): The Timekeeper/Announcer will tell the team to “BEGIN” the Skit. During the Presentation time, the team may continue to modify its Miscellaneous Prop. At the end of 4 minutes, the Time-keeper/Announcer will say “STOP,” ending the Skit. The Skit ends, even if the team has not finished. If the team chooses, it may end its Skit at any time prior to the end of the 4-minute period.

d. After the Skit, the team may bow and enjoy its well-earned applause. The team should then remain in the Presen-tation Area to talk briefly with the Appraisers. Teams are asked to clean up and recycle any used or unused newspaper.
