LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT The 2015-16 10th Anniversary Season of Tulsa Symphony was an exhilarating and rewarding one for the entire Tulsa Symphony family, friends, collaborators and the Tulsa community. Once again the outdoor launch of the season on the Guthrie Green was performed for record crowds. This event was followed three weeks later by the Tulsa PAC debut of Maestro Daniel Hege in his first milestone performance as TSO’s Principal Guest Conductor, a position created by the musicians. Halloween 2015 marked another milestone with the opening of Tulsa Symphony’s first family friendly Pops Series concert with Ron Spigelman on the podium.

In March of the New Year Maestro Benjamin Zander thrilled a capacity audience with his brilliant interpretation of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony and his inspirational presentation as guest speaker for Tulsa Town Hall. And the 32nd season of the Bartlesville OK Mozart International Festival was the venue for Tulsa Symphony’s final two performances of the 2015-16 season.

Highlighting the season for Education Outreach was the newly established Carnegie Hall Link Up partnership for 1,200 Tulsa Public Schools and Union Public Schools students. The resounding success of the pilot program was supported through the proceeds and donations of the Midwinter’s Night Dream fundraiser at the TU Lorton Performing Arts Center which featured renowned pianist, Robin Sutherland, as soloist. The Link Up program will become the centerpiece of TSO’s Education Outreach next season and will be integrated into every elementary school in TPS, Union, Broken Arrow, Jenks and Sand Springs students.

Furthermore, I am delighted to announce that the midway financial goals of the two-year Celebrate Campaign to raise $3 million for operations, $2 million in a new endowment fund and $260,000 in a Strategic Reserve Fund are on track and hopefully will be completed by the end of the 2016-17 season with your continued support.

The Celebrate Campaign Advisory Committee, with the creative and inspired leadership of Terri Collins, President of the Albert and Hete Barthelmes Foundation, are to be commended for their commitment and dedication in reaching the ambitious financial goals set for the Celebrate Campaign.

With the success and accomplishments of the 10th Anniversary season, Tulsa Symphony has reached yet another level of artistic achievement, notably increased its contribution to the education community through the Carnegie Hall Link Up partnership, which will serve 12,000 area 3rd, 4th and 5th graders next season and remains focused on and dedicated to providing indispensable service that distinguishes our community.

Tulsa Symphony’s milestone anniversary reflects the tireless efforts and commitment of the TSO Board, staff, musicians and the trust, confidence, moral and generous financial support of the entire Tulsa community.

It is my great pleasure to contribute to this fine organization and a privilege to serve as President of the Board of Directors. On behalf of the Tulsa Symphony I extend our deepest appreciation to all our arts and non-arts collaborators and the Tulsa community for their continuing and sustaining support and partnership as we prepare to launch TSO’s second exciting decade.

Sincerely,

David KeglovitsTulsa Symphony Board President 2015-2016

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The highly anticipated 2015-16 10th Anniversary season launched on Friday September 4, at Tulsa Symphony’s outdoor home, the Guthrie Green, as the anchor event of the monthly Brady District Friday Night Art Crawl. The 4th consecutive Symphony in the Park drew another capacity audience from throughout the greater Tulsa area and beyond for a festive evening of familiar light classics and pop selections ending with a spectacular fireworks finale.

The 2015-16 season bore the intriguing moniker of “Hear the Unexpected” ,and the September 26 Classics opener at the PAC was just that, performing the unscheduled Shostakovich Festive Overture with the first downbeat of the evening; the same composition that opened the very first Classics season 10 years ago. Appropriately, TSO was honored to have concert sponsorship from the Patti Johnson Wilson Foundation, whose namesake was a truly accomplished pianist and a stalwart and loyal supporter of classical orchestral music throughout her life in Tulsa.

The milestone concert featured the first performance by Maestro Daniel Hege since his appointment as TSO Principle Guest Conductor by the Tulsa Symphony musicians.

Other milestones of the 10th Anniversary season were the addition of a three concert PAC Pops Series with conductor, Ron Spigelman, and the pilot program launch of the highly acclaimed and lauded Carnegie Hall Link Up educational program for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. The Link Up pilot program for 1200 students during the season will grow to 12,000 next season and 18,000 the following season. Major fundraising will be required to support the rapid growth of the program to enhance and complement the struggling, underfunded greater Tulsa school districts. But TSO is committed to the meeting the financial challenge of delivering this inspirational and viable initiative and contribution to the surrounding student and teaching communities.

In addition to expanding service to students through Education Outreach, the Heart Strings initiative continues to bring comfort, relief and joy to the Muskogee VA Hospital patients, families and staff. This program, coupled with ticket donations to our veterans through Vet Tix, are two of the most rewarding and fulfilling community engagement priorities that TSO avidly supports.

The 10th Anniversary Celebrate Campaign Committee, whose credo is: Remarkable City-Exceptional Symphony-Building Community, has done an amazing job of promoting and supporting TSO’s Mission and Vision as an indispensable contributor to the Tulsa community. Their exceptional efforts have produced the foundation for TSO’s next decade and beyond by establishing and rapidly growing the new Endowment and Strategic Reserve Funds. A $3,000,000.00 goal for the end of the two-year Celebrate Campaign in spring of 2017 is well over 50% completed.

Furthermore, I am excited and optimistic as I report that every facet of Tulsa Symphony continues on a positive and energetic trajectory of artistry, education and community engagement through sound and prudent fiscal management and the trust and confidence of a generous, supportive community. A community of individuals, corporations and foundations that have the deepest respect and gratitude of the Tulsa Symphony Board, Staff and musicians for their steadfast and loyal investment in this innovative and dedicated community service organization.

On behalf of the entire Tulsa Symphony family, I close with a most sincere thank you to one and all for your particular vital, creative and meaningful contribution that has propelled TSO to this 10th Anniversary historical milestone and the exhilarating future it portends. Truly, it is a special privilege to serve as the Executive Director in this innovative and unconventional musical adventure as it continues to develop and unfold.

Sincerely,

Ron PredlTulsa Symphony Executive Director

An Orchestra for the CommunityHEART STRINGSContinuing its partnership with the Jack C. Montgomery Veterans Administration Medical Center in Muskogee, the Tulsa Symphony Heart Strings program entered its third year providing comfort through music to patients, families, and staff at area health care facilities. Musicians performed monthly, in addition to other area hospitals, such as Saint Francis Hospital, and at shelters and community events.

OUTREACH ENSEMBLESCentral to Tulsa Symphony’s mission is the opportunity to collaborate with our community. Our TSO Outreach Ensembles perform for several local opportunities including:

• Guthrie Green events: TSO ensembles performed for Glow on the Green and several Food Truck Wednesday events

• Local Series: TSO musicians performed at the University Methodist Noon Series;

• Philanthropic events: TSO ensembles were featured at Edison High School’s fundraiser, as well as the Sand Springs Tornado Relief event

• For-profit and non-profit organizations: TSO ensembles partner with local organizations, such as Tulsa’s Table, United Way Emerging Youth, Resonance Program for Women, Take 2 Café, Girouard Winery, and the Hyatt Regency Hotel

SYMPHONY IN THE PARKEchoing the successful premier in September 2012, the Tulsa Symphony’s Symphony in the Park program continues to attract audiences of all ages to the Guthrie Green, a unique urban park just step from Tulsa Symphony offices. Over 3,000 community members enjoyed a free, one-hour performance by Tulsa Symphony during The Brady Arts District’s First Friday celebration on September 4th, 2015 culminating in a fireworks display over the downtown Tulsa skyline.

“ Since the first time we worked together, there was a positive atmosphere and a wonderful sense of music-making. The Tulsa Symphony is going into its 10-year anniversary with a great deal of momentum, and I am very happy to be a part of this family.” ~ Daniel Hege

TSO Education LINK UPIn collaboration with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI), Tulsa Symphony Orchestra participated in WMI’s Link Up program during the 2015–2016 season. Link Up is a highly participatory program that pairs orchestras across the country with schools in their local communities, inviting students to learn about orchestral repertoire through a yearlong, hands-on music curriculum. Each year focuses on specific concepts, including rhythm, melody, tempo, orchestration, and compositionUtilizing materials provided free of charge by WMI, teachers guided students in exploring music through a composer’s lens, with students participating in active music making in the classroom; performing repertoire on recorder, violin, voice, or body percussion; and taking part in creative work such as composing their own pieces inspired by the orchestral music they have studied. The culmination of the yearlong program was a live performance in which students had the opportunity to sing and play the recorder or violin along with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra. This performance often serves as students’ first concert experience and provides them with the opportunity to apply the musical concepts they have studied. Tulsa Symphony Orchestra is one of more than 80 national and international organizations chosen for this program. Link Up’s national partnerships grew out of the program’s ongoing work with New York City schools, through which Carnegie Hall has engaged hundreds of thousands of students in musical learning since its inception in 1985.

DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE POSITIONThe expansion of TSO development programs and initiatives led to the creation of Tulsa Symphony’s second full-time development staff position to assist the Director of Development. Development Associate, Alina Osika joined the TSO staff on July 27, 2015. Prior to relocating to Tulsa in 2015, Alina pursued her Master’s Degree in Arts Leadership and Administration at Colorado State University (CSU) in Fort Collins, Colorado where she served as one of two Graduate Teachings Assistants for the Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Arts Advocacy, and the Public program. She concurrently served as the Graduate Marketing Coordinator for the Student Leadership, Involvement & Community Engagement Office. In addition to these positions, Alina coordinated Streetmosphere, the City of Fort Collins’ signature summer cultural program, which transformed the downtown area into a spontaneous, outdoor performing arts festival.
