Two years ago, Greg Ches-terton had never ridden cross country, had never followed a pack of hounds, didn’t own a horse – but he had seen photos of fox hunting in the show barns where he’d been taking lessons and thought it looked like fun.

It was, and he goes into this year’s hunter pace season with his own horse – Andre, a 17.1 hand Off the Track Thorough-bred (“more go than whoa”) – and a season of hunting first field under his belt. He and his instructor (sort of a Yoda-like, feel the force) Heather Heider paired at the 2014 Loudoun Fairfax Hunt Hunter Pace flat race and won – that was about one year after his first lesson.

“The hunter paces are a great place for me as a trainer to in-troduce my students, adults and kids, to a cross country experi-ence,” Heider said.

Back in April 2013, she took Chesterton to the Loudoun Fair-fax Hunt Hunter Pace to “check out a typical club event” and to meet the hunt club members. “I remember how welcoming and encouraging everyone was, not to mention the great tailgate – these folks obviously knew how to have a good time around horses,” Chesterton remembers.

He hadn’t yet had his first lesson when Heider announced that the next year they would be teammates at the hunter pace.

Starting the in the spring of 2013, he took two lessons a week from Heider and when fall came, rode after hounds in the hilltopper division of the Loudoun Fairfax Hunt. Lessons were on the flat, in the field and jumping – and he had to learn hunting etiquette and how to tie a stock tie. That might have

After cold but successful hunter shows on January 10 and February 14, we decided that safety was the best policy and postponed our March 7 hunt-er show until March 28. We hope that everyone who was hoping to attend will join us on the 28th.On January 10 Judge DeDe Bache-Shumate liked Adam Edgar and Formal At-tire in the pony ring, awarding them the championships in both Pony Hunter and Green Pony. Tip Toe also had a winning day, carrying champion Ellery See in the Lead Line division, and winning the 2’ Hunter division and picking up a reserve in Pony Hunter with Harper Peterson in the tack. Brittany Pilarski and Sweet As Gold came home with three tri-colors in the 2’6” Hunt-er, Children’s/Adult Hunter, and Adult Hunter Pleasure.

Loch Moy H/J ShowsBy A.K. Newlacil

In addition to its popular start-er horse trials, schooling shows and recognized events, Loch Moy Farm is looking forward to new partnerships in its third year of hunter/jumper competi-tion.

The Sugarloaf Mountain Horse Show Series will offer not only MHSA Regional op-tions, but also VHSA Associate and DC Area Horse Show As-sociation divisions. A hunter derby will run on July 5, and the Sugarloaf Medal Finals on August 22. Riders will have the opportunity to hone their skills and reach riding milestones at Loch Moy as they pursue year-end association recognition.

Loch Moy Farm strives to provide a friendly, welcoming environment in which to grow as an equestrian. The Sugarloaf series is geared toward amateur, junior and beginner riders who are looking for the excitement of competition at a premier fa-cility without additional stress or financial hurdles. The hunter ring schedule has been revised, and jumper classes will run in a block format. This will min-imize ring conflicts, offering greater flexibility for all partic-ipants.

The Loch Moy Farm Thor-oughbred Show also returns for a third year. Thoroughbred hors-es will have the chance to earn points from The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Incentive Pro-gram (TIP), the Thoroughbred Alliance Show Series, and the Maryland Thoroughbred Show Series. Hunter, jumper, dres-sage and combined test divi-sions will be offered.

The biggest news of the spring season at Loch Moy is the design and construction of a fifth outdoor arena with all-weather footing. Scheduled for completion in time for the Thoroughbred Show, the arena will be used for competition and schooling on the flat and over fences. Riders and trainers can tour the facility during the open house and party on April 18. Come out and see what’s happening at one of Maryland’s favorite venues - Loch Moy Farm!

Loch Moy Farm EventingBy Ashley Russell

Whether you are an experi-enced professional, or you are new to eventing, there is some-thing fun for everyone at Loch Moy Farm. This state-of-the-art facility is located conveniently 30 minutes from Leesburg Va., and less than an hour from Bal-timore and D.C.

What better way to get your mojo back after a long winter, try easing back into the season with one of the three Spring

Starter Horse Trials or CT’s. These are perfect for young horses or those new to the sport. The courses are designed to be very welcoming and education-al, with room to regroup and take that much needed breath.

The Maryland Adult Eventing Camp is an opportunity to work with some of the top instructors and riders in the sport. With days filled with educational and challenging riding experiences, and evenings filled with inter-esting speakers, delicious food, and laughter, this camp is a great way to fine tune your skills or develop the confidence need-ed to move up to the next level.

Twilight Eventing is a quick and easy way to have fun with-out the pressure of a competi-tion. Ride all three phases back to back and leave with your Dressage test full of helpful comments to go home and work on.

Fun for riders and spectators alike, The Maryland Horse Tri-als in July are recognized events that draw some of the biggest names in the sport as well as amateur riders from all over the area. The courses are packed full of challenging questions and engaging elements.

simple logs to ditches, banks, and water. The Competition Course is also open for school-ing occasionally throughout the year so you can channel your inner Mary King or Buck Da-vidson as you gallop across the fields full of gorgeous fences for every level.

All of the events at Loch Moy are well organized and would not be possible without the tire-less efforts from a very loyal small army of volunteers. What better way to get a front seat to all the action than by volunteer-ing? Besides, you not only walk away from the day with a little sun on your cheeks, but you also get a coveted t-shirt, yum-my lunch, a free cross country schooling pass, and bragging rights that you helped run one of the best events in Area 2!

“I think volunteering at horse trials is a great way to get to know what eventing is all about,” said Terri Ehrenfeld, a Maryland resident who discov-ered eventing in 2013 with her horse, Corey. “I’ve volunteered at various jobs at The Maryland Horse Trials at Loch Moy in-cluding as a cross country jump judge and warm-up ring coordi-nator for both cross country and show jumping. Volunteering taught me the rules of eventing and also helped me create per-sonal strategies for memorizing show jumping courses and mak-ing the best use of warm-up time and space. It’s a lot of fun!”

The fall season is also full of ways to have fun at Loch Moy while taking in the stunning fo-liage that surrounds the facility. There is another Starter horse trial series, a recognized event in Oct. and an amazing oppor-tunity to participate in a clinic with Lucinda Green.

Come try your hand at one of the many eventing experiences offered at Loch Moy and join all the fun our sport has to offer!

it will also include jumpers. The Jockey club has supplied us with lovely ribbons, Jockey Club backpacks and medals, and sponsors over $500 in cash prizes to our year-end winners.

We will be adding hunter der-bies and jumpers to our offer-ings this year. (They are sched-uled on an alternating schedule, so check for dates on our Horse Times page, and on our website and Facebook page.) We have added new classes for beginning riders of any age, along with our tried and true, and will offer Medal classes for both ponies, and the horses. You can do a warm-up for any over fences division, and we schedule am-ple schooling time both in the morning and afternoon.

This year, LTD will be host-ing clinics as well. Kevin Free-man will be coming late spring/summer. Oliver Brown will be judging our Fall Finale show on October 31, which will be a combination of clinic with Oli-ver and a show. We will have lots of fun classes -- such as costume, trick-or-treat-pick-a-course, invisible horse and stick horse -- and then after all the VHSA classes, Oliver will work with all the riders. We will also be awarding our series-end priz-

Moriah FarmBy Marjorie Yeager

At Moriah Farm, our goal is always to produce a local show with a rated feel. In 2015e will be stick-ing with this mission and will keep most of the showing experi-ence the same, with prizes awarded in each division at ev-ery show.

We are adding one big new feature to our shows this year, one that will be helpful in making new friends and bring-ing exhibitors together. We are introducing a “Team Year-End Award.” Teams can be created

es at this show. Our sponsors have been gen-

erous. Look forward to our same beautiful rosettes, silver platters and crystal awards. This year we will be adding cham-pagne for our adult division winners and a $200 cash prize for our top trainer. Our top rider will receive a custom “actors” chair with logo and other fabu-lous gifts. Reserve rider will re-ceive a one-hour massage with Massage Envy and a halter.

Concessions will be brought to you by Southern Ladies. They offer home-made break-fasts, bagged lunches, with hand crafted sandwiches (Boar’s Head, chicken salad, and spe-cialty cheeses), Route 11 chips, soups, chili and sweets.

Our 2015 show year will again include a winter series at Morven Park, beginning in De-cember and continuing through to March 2016.

Our desire to see you or your rider improve from show to show makes us strive for a re-laxed atmosphere and kind ser-

vice. We keep our shows moving along and running smooth-ly. You can enter on-line to both save money and time. Just arrive and just pick up your number!

within a barn or barns can get together with other barns and forms teams. A team will con-sist of four horse and rider com-binations. The team members must be declared before com-

peting in order for the points to count toward the team award. Rider and horse combinations must stay the same throughout the year.

Teams can be all hunters or all jumpers or a mix of both. Call your friends and get started thinking of a clever team name and sign up at our shows!

Our show series has been around for a long time, and some of the year-end awards go back to the 1990s. We offer a number of special awards for which winners receive perpetual trophies engraved with the name of each year’s winner. Some of these are very special awards, donated in honor of horses and riders. We also give year-end awards for each division.

Our shows are great for be-ginner riders and green horses, because the environment is low stress, and we have an excellent

great team, Chesterton said. “He has taken great care of me in some dicey situations and is for-giving of my amateur seat. I’m not sure Andre wanted a new challenge in life, but I did and he’s been a more than willing and partner in this endeavor.”

The whole experience has opened his eyes, Chesterton said, to the equestrian world that was all around him but of which he was pretty unaware. His friends and family, he said, are surprised to learn that the hunting tradition is alive and well just out their back doors. “I’m always anxious to spread the word about the great com-munity, the importance of land preservation and the horse pro-fession in our area.”

Spring is in the Air!Or Coming Soon…Hunt Races, Trail Rides, and Other Options for the“Off-Season”By Carroll D. Galvin, Loudoun Hunt

What is a Hunter Pace?Every spring, all the north-

ern Virginia hunt clubs put on hunter paces, or pairs races – members lay out a course over hunt country, usually about 2.5-3 miles with 15-15 jumps. Enthusiasts enter as pairs (trios are often seen) in fast time (jumping, whoever gets around fastest wins), optimum time (jumping, winning pair finishes closest to the time set by the race organizers), opti-mum time flat (ditto). There are divisions for juniors as well.

Optimum time riders don’t know the time they need to meet until after the results are announced – they are sup-posed to get around the course at a “fair hunting pace.” How fast or slow that might be de-pends on who from the spon-soring hunt rode the course the day before (finding that out can give you an edge). Many years ago, when Hunts-man Bay Cockburn rode the Loudoun West course to set the time, everyone knew it would be Very Fast.

pretty but learning to ride prop-erly and effectively to be able to negotiate difficult terrain, jump obstacles and to make your horse comfortable and enjoy his hunting experience. “The hunt-er pace circuit in the spring is perfect for getting students out of the ring and having them prepared to ride cross country – which prepares them for the hunt field,” she said.

For foxhunters (and other equestrians alike), this winter has been plagued with snow and ice, frozen ground and sloppy footing. Many hunts have had to

cancel several days or weeks of hunting at the behest of “Moth-er Nature.” As snow and bit-ter-cold temperatures continue

Picturesque Farm Wednesday Evening Schooling Shows are family friendly and competitive, with an easy-going atmosphere.

We have gorgeous “A” show quality jumps, an outdoor ring with lights, fantastic footing, a large and diverse class list. We provide plenty of parking and a prompt, organized, well run show.

This series is ideal for young or older, up-and-coming riders looking to see and experience a real show atmosphere, or more advanced riders wanting

outdoor ring, with good jumps for any level of rider. The cours-es are straight forward and work well for someone that wants a quiet, easy round to school their horse. They range in height from 12” for beginners all the way up to 3’ for the more experienced riders. The courses slowly get a little more difficult as the season progresses.

The outside/field hunter course has two options for ev-ery class. One option is to take the lower 2’ course and the oth-er is a 2’6” course. The course requires the riders to navigate terrain you would normally en-counter while hunting.

This year, we hope to change up the outside course and even expand to a second course. This feature is unique to North Fork shows, and we encourage riders to come and give it a try!

In the “old days,” show hunters competed over outside courses of natural jumps, so at North Fork, we are returning to the roots of show hunting. We’ll have two benefit shows

to school their green or made horses and ponies. It is a great opportunity to learn, train, com-pete, have fun, and of course, participate in some friendly competition.

Our show has been recog-nized as one of the Top 10 VHSA Associate Horse Shows, and we are also known for our infamous costume class held at the final show of the series!

Our clients can always expect a manicured and watered ring (even in the heat of summer), helpful and organized staff, a new and respected judge every week, on time start, good com-munication, and a safe environ-ment.

We encourage horses and riders new to the show scene to join us as we provide a great first-time experience, along with a quality venue that will help riders prepare to step up to the “A” circuit. Along with all levels of show hunter clients, we like to see event riders use our shows as a great school for their stadium, and foxhunters

this year, one for the Loudoun Hunt and another for the ANRC. Dates are yet to be determined.

Red Gate FarmBy Christine Vitkus

Red Gate Farm is central-ly located in Loudoun County between Leesburg and Purcell-ville. It is easy to reach our farm by Virginia Routes 9, 7, 15 and the Greenway, without long gravel roads.

Our parking is right next to the ring. There is very little walking to reach the secretary’s stand, warm-up area, snack bar, and bathroom facilities. You can see the show ring from them all!

We specialize in children, and cater to them with our free moon bounce and playground, prizes for all young riders under 12, and ice cream vendor. We also have Champion and Re-serve ribbons and prizes for all divisions with 3 or more riders.

Our ring is always well dec-orated, manicured, and watered. We are also known for our ab-solutely stunning live trees, bushes, and flowers. Stadium seating provides a wonderful view of the ring. The pictures

of riders in the ring are beauti-ful, whether you purchase them from our professional photogra-pher or take them yourself.

A few other comments I have heard from our guests are that our jump courses are straight-forward, our shows are good for “green horses and green riders,” our judges are terrific, our staff is helpful, and that we really keep the show moving, usually finishing by 5:30.

Warm-up in the outdoor show ring is permitted twice per show day, and in our indoor ring all day long. The indoor ring has also served as a “safe haven” during summer thunderstorms, and to keep the show moving when rain was persistent. Both rings have comfortable sand/rubber footing.

The TIP divisions were add-ed to the prize list this year, and we are excited for promoting the Thoroughbred breed, with OTTBs in particular.

After our lunch break, at ap-proximately 2 p.m. We’d love to see more afternoon riders. At

keeping their horses schooled between hunt seasons. As al-ways, we offer a perfect vari-ety of classes for camp groups, beginning and learning riders, as well as children’s/adult and pony hunter riders.

We are so excited to announce that a new food vendor will be joining us this year. Tikiz Shaved Ice and Ice Cream will be here to keep everyone cool and refreshed. Can we say, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!?”

Additional “fun” classes, like our Adult/Parent Lead Line, will be run all summer long! We are working on being able to offer online registration, and I hope will be available for this year’s series. We will keep you in-formed if and when this comes to fruition.

We are very excited to have several new judges join us this season, including Samantha Martynowski and Laura Batts.

We offer Champion and Re-serve Champion prizes at ev-ery horse show, prizes to each

Lead Line rider, and series end awards.

We are looking forward to this upcoming show season and are excited to meet new riders and horses!

to grip much of our region, it may seem that spring is a far cry off right now.

As I look out my window at a blanket of snow (soon to be mud), it seems like this would be the perfect opportunity to plan for spring riding and hunt activities. What are your op-tions? Well, we have…

Point-to-Point Races – Race meetings offer an ideal oppor-tunity for equestrian fun for the whole family. Most weekends between the beginning of March

and the beginning of May, you can find spring racing being hosted by one of your regional hunts in either Maryland or Vir-ginia.

Spectator parking costs vary and can be on a per-car or per-person basis. Bring a lawn chair, a picnic lunch, and the family and make a day of watching horses run on the flat, over timber, and over hurdles.

Dates and race meeting loca-tions can be found by visiting the website for the Central En-try Office at www.centralentry-office.com. Spoiler Alert: Our annual Loudoun Hunt Point-to-Point races are on Sunday, April 12, at Oatlands Plantation.

Trail Rides – Many of your local hunts will host trail rides in their territory during the spring and summer months. These are spectacular opportu-nities to try out new horses, visit new and varying country, meet new friends, and get acquainted

with your local hunt. The cost per rider is usually very reason-able and some trail rides will of-ten include a lunch or dinner as part of the cost. Some rides will even accommodate lower-level riders or those on green horses who need a slower pace. Trail rides offer the chance to see a particular hunt’s territory and interact with members. Look for ads in Horse Times for hunt trail ride options.

Social Activities – Some hunts offer social activities or membership options geared

toward the non-riding crowd. These can include wine-tasting events, dinners, auctions, pup-py-naming events for a new litter of your local hunt’s finest, barbeques, or tail gates.

These should be advertised in advance and can be a great way to meet people and engage with a hunt without having to hitch up your trailer or haul your horse. Check with your local hunt’s master or secretary (or its advertising mediums, such as social media, Horse Times, or website) for more information on when these activities will take place, the costs (if any), and how you can get involved.

One can see that there are no shortage of options for activities with hunt clubs as spring and summer comes upon us. Look for more details in upcoming editions of the Horse Times. With so much to do, it will soon be time to get hunting horses legged up again!

If you would like your horse show and/orevent dates to be included on this calendar,

Young riders at a Turner Farm show really know how to keep their heels down!

this point, the kids and ponies have finished, so it’s more for teens and adults. You can call or text us during the show, and we can let you know what division we are currently running and what our estimated time is for your division, based on num-ber of entries. This has proved helpful to those trying to fit in two shows in one day or those not wanting to get started early in the morning!

We are proud to recognize our top six riders from each division in our annual banquet. This year, we will be recognizing trainers as well. This event is a fun eve-ning for all, with great food, rib-bons, and prizes valued at over $3000. The proceeds from the banquet support our Loudoun County rescue workers.

Last year, our show snack bar was run by teens from a local church, and all profit ($1800) was donated to a mission trip that provided thousands of meals to underprivileged chil-dren in South America. This year, we are looking for a wor-thy organization that would like to provide a similar service. Red Gate Farm provides a huge pa-vilion with electric, fans, shelv-ing, picnic tables, and lighting.

Finally, Red Gate Farm ran several Wednesday night jump-er shows last summer and ev-eryone loved them, so we will be doing that again this year. They have a relaxed atmosphere and some fun course designs, adding a bigger variety of jumps (fans, triple bars, Swedish oxers, cross oxers, double/triple com-binations, etc.). You can buy as

Turner FarmBy Sarah Kirk

Turner Farm shows combine the easy flexibility of a local show, with classic jumps, great food, and active competition. Located in Great Falls, Va., just nine miles from D.C., Turner Farm shows fill up with folks from our town, and from all the way out to Leesburg, Middle-burg and beyond.

With two rings going, Work-ing Hunters (3’/2’9”) and Lead Line divisions start us off. Ring I holds our VHSA classes, as well as Low Hunter at 18”/2’, and two Turner Farm Equita-tion Medal classes, at 2’6”/3’ and 18”. Ring II has Lead Line through Beginner Equitation, and new in 2015, a Pairs class. We love this format, which al-lows the kids ring to complete by around 2, and the main ring by 5 p.m.

Point standings are posted at the newly designed web site, www.turnerfarmevents.org. Online registration is posted two weeks before each show.

Proceeds from Turner Farm shows go right back into im-

many rounds as you like, and the fences get higher and time faster with each level. All clear rounds earn a blue ribbon, and we also award ribbons to the top six finishers in each level.

If you haven’t tried our shows, come join us! You’ll have a fun day, with great pictures. And our entry fees have stayed the same for eight years!

compete. We tried to help them manage by adding some extra schooling time in the ring, and allowing a practice fence before their timed course to make sure that no one was going in the ring cold – all of which was very ap-preciated by the exhibitors.

Elaina Barron had a very suc-cessful jumper series aboard Extraordinary Measures, ac-cumulating 92 points and the Grand Championship in the Low Jumper Division over the four shows (22, 22, 26, 22), which was the high point total of any division. Adding to her success was her Grand Cham-pionship in the Maiden division of the Hunter Series on Dixie Gent.

The “big news” from TWA shows this year is that we will be having a new TWA Hunter

Previews....................from p.37

Continued on p. 45

Sandstone FarmBy Luci Strange & Paul Adams

Attendance at our shows in 2014 was the highest in our history. As breeders and train-ers of half-Welsh show ponies, we were particularly gratified with turn out by pony riders in 2014. For the first time in our series history, we had more trips with ponies than horses. We are tweaking a few things with a view towards improving the pony rider’s experience.

We will be offering all Short Circuit divisions again this year as we have done since 2007.

We will be starting the small ring at 8:30 a.m. rather than 9, to prevent time conflicts for riders who want to enter both the Short Stirrup Equitation di-vision (which runs in the small ring) and the VHSA Short Cir-cuit Hunter division, which is run in the large ring.

Our Limit Hunter division, which has a minimum of six fences, will be offered at 2’ and at 2’3” at the rider’s option. This was a popular division last year and offers a path for riders to transition from Short Circuit divisions to VHSA Pony divi-sions, or to horses. It also offers an opportunity for young horses or ponies to jump 2’3” without losing their green.

We are in the process of fi-nalizing our awards program for 2015, but plan on offering awards to the top two Adult Am-ateur Riders, Pony Riders, and Junior Riders on Horses. The top four trainers will receive cash awards. We will also pro-vide end-of-year awards to the Champion and Reserve Cham-pion for all three-class Hunter divisions, and a sportsmanship award as well.

We anticipate offering day-

of-show awards in certain divi-sions of our hunter show that we are trying to promote. We will also be offering day-of-show awards for most divisions in our jumper shows and all divisions in our Combined Tests.

We have also made a few adjustments to our prize list, to improve the experience of ex-hibitors riding horses:

We moved the VHSA Horse Pleasure division to the morning in the large ring, providing an attractive selection of divisions for exhibitors who do not wish to spend all day at a horse show.

We moved the Hunter Hack division to the afternoon for riders with young horses, those who do not want to jump large fences, or those who would like warm up prior to competing in the later Classes.

In 2015 we will be offering TIP divisions in all our events, including VHSA Associate Hunters and Jumpers, and our CDCTA Combined Tests.

As we write this, snow is falling, with an expected accu-mulation of 8 inches. It is hard to imagine that in less than one month we will be hosting our first VHSA Associate Hunter Show. But, please join us on Saturday, April 5. Grab a cup of coffee and one of Nacho’s delicious breakfast sandwiches and start to knock off the rust.

proving the park. Our goals for 2015 are to have a tractor/gator on site, and to start con-struction on a new trailer park-ing area with gated entrance on Springvale Road, near the riding ring. All donations are appreci-ated, and volunteers much ap-preciated. We would love to see you at our shows!

Series at the Warrenton show grounds. The dates are April 18 (incorporated with the VPBA Short Circuit Show), May 10, June 21, August 15 and Sep-tember 27. These shows are all VHSA Associate, BHSA, Short Circuit and DCAreaHSA rec-ognized. There will be series awards for each of the divisions, and some special awards as well, which will be presented at the final show on September 27 and are sponsored by TWA and Saddlery Liquidators. Watch for more news and the prize list to come.

The VPBA Short Circuit Show on April 18 is always a very special show (see the prize list opposite). This show is unique among the VHSA Associate shows in that it of-fers pony breeding classes, and winners in these divisions get double points toward VPBA awards. Breeders of top hunter ponies typically use this show as a prep for the very compet-itive pony breeding divisions at Devon and Upperville. Our show is a chance for them to get their young ponies out in a little more low-key environment than found at the large recognized shows. But the competition in the pony breeding classes at the VPBA Show is top-notch, and often the winners at our show

Previews...................from p.43

Continued on p. 47

go on to victories at Devon and Upperville. So if you want to get a first peek at some of our area’s top young ponies, come to Warrenton on April 18.

I am also doing my popular Tuesday afternoon jumper se-ries at Summerduck Run Farm in Culpeper, Va. Schooling be-gins at 3 and the show starts at 4. The dates are: June 16, June 30, July 21, and Aug. 4. All are VHSA Associate and BHSA shows. Series-end awards are given in each division, includ-ing Puddle, Novice, Novice Ch/AA, Low, Thoroughbred, CH/AA, and Schooling Jumpers. There will be two classes in each division and with Champi-on and Reserve awarded in each division. The TB Jumpers are new this year.

Again in the 2015 show sea-son, TWA is producing two CHSA shows at Rose Mount Farm in Fredericksburg, Va. This year’s dates are July 11 and Aug. 29. Rose Mount Farm is a top-class show venue, with excellent facilities and beautiful jumps. These two-ring shows are noted for the good quality of the competition and, as at all CHSA shows, you have to step up and jump a little bigger in a lot of the divisions. We also offer divisions at the lower lev-els too for the greener horses

The annual VPBA show at the Warrenton Show Grounds attracts some of the area’s fanciest ponies, including Empire’s Empress (by Empire’s Power) shown here competing in the Young Pony Under Saddle class last year.

and riders, but our goal is to offer competitors who want the chance to move closer to the type of competition they will find at rated shows the opportu-nity to experience that.

Eagles’ Wings Show SeriesBy Jeannie Hellem-Ramsey

A new event taking place this year in the Eastern Panhandle of WV that is sure to be a show stopper, an event that will build on itself from year to year, and make its mark in the five state area as a top notch place to show competitively -- Eagles’ Wings First Annual Show Series -- an exciting special event for equine lovers of all disciplines.

We believe in the eloquent beauty of horse and rider in all aspects. Our goal is to have an event that is stunning, in-credible, competitive and chal-lenging as well as fun! If you are looking for a new place to showcase your talents – consid-er competing with us and here’s why:

Our event offers competition for English, Hunter Jumper, Western, Break & Command & Speed Divisions. Our judging team is vetted and unique, our equine photographers are out-standing, our venue is free to spectators with pre-registration discounts for competitors up to 1 week prior to shows and abil-ity to pay with credit card day of show. At the Berkeley Coun-ty Youth Fairgrounds we offer free ample parking for all, over-night accommodations for your horse, stalls with electric for day of show, wash stalls, public re-strooms, food concessions, and vendors that sell from tack to bling, handbags to embroidered carry-ons. Cake and food walk, all day registration, 50/50 raffle each show. Hog raffle tickets available throughout the series. Additionally, local hotel accom-modations close by.

The 300x150’ outdoor Main horse arena has sand footing which is superb for all equine divisions, a beautiful hunter jumper course, continuous drag-ging of the arena, ample space for warm-ups 8am-8:45am and

before fences & speed divisions, with additional smaller outdoor sand arena open throughout the day. 1st-5th place ribbons, riders compete for year-end awards, top two riders per division will receive small prize day of shows, lead line classes with ad-ditional participant ribbons for all, end of year awards for Top 4 in all divisions. Awards banquet at Holiday Inn Ballroom, Mar-tinsburg, WV, November 13th. Semi-formal attire.

What do we want for our fu-ture? We want a two-day show event series with added Dres-sage, American Trail Competi-tions Arena Obstacle Challenge, TIP classes and more. We want to be touted as one of the best. How about you?

Eagles’ Wings is a faith-based, 501 (c)(3) nonprofit that works with young girls nation-ally & internationally using horse whispering techniques to teach life, critical thinking & comprehensive communication skills. Washington County HCBy Lori Bellerive

Our shows are well suited for the very young to the more ma-ture rider, whether beginning, restarting or schooling green horses. We offer a great venue for riders who want to have fun, as well as those who are a lit-tle more competitive and want to earn points for our year-end awards, as well as points for other circuits, such as VHSA, MHSA, USHJA, DCAreaHSA, and TIP as well.

We have a friendly, welcom-ing atmosphere set in a park, with great accommodations for the riders, trainers and support-ing family members. Our shows attract young riders as well as the returning equestrian looking for a fun filled day with their be-loved equines.

Additionally, our shows ap-peal to riders with Thorough-breds looking for TIP opportu-nities and those who would like the opportunity to compete in USHJA Outreach classes, which offer recognition at a national level. TIP classes have no ad-ditional fees, and USHJA mem-bers need only to be Outreach members at only $15 a year.

We have new jumps this year and improved food. We al-ways have a photographer and although they are not new, we brag about our shady parking, picnic pavilion, park-like set-ting and actual restrooms.

This year, entry fees will be

priced the same, with a $5 ad-ditional fee(s) for those who want points to count for mul-tiple series: VHSA, MHSA, USHJA, DCAreaHSA. We will also offer warm-up classes, and schooling is always available in the morning before the show and at lunch time.

Some of the judges we al-ready have lined up this year include Tricia Booker, Laura Stopper Batts, and Kerry Elliott. We award prizes at each show for the TIP classes, and for the series-end winners. We give medals and special ribbons to winners in the USHJA classes.

Kelly’s Ford is looking for-ward to welcoming you to our 2015 Open Hunter Jumper Se-ries, which consists of six shows. These shows are recognized by Virginia Horse Show Associa-tion and Battlefield Horse Show Association, most are also par-ticipating the DCAreaHSA, and two are members of the Short Circuit Association. They are also Thoroughbred Celebration qualifying shows.

Our shows are among the few that have a hunter and a jumper ring going at the same time. We are proud to debut a newly-ex-panded Jumper ring this year -- it’s almost double the size it was, and now the grob is within the ring. We are also upgrading

the jumps in our Hunter Ring, and have built a hedge to jump in and out of the ring. We are holding an Open Hunter Derby at 2’ and 2’6” at every show, which includes new obstacles for a fun and exciting challenge.

For the first time ever, Kelly’s Ford Equestrian Center will be offering a High-Point Trainer award for our Open Horse Show Series. This award will be giv-en to the trainer who’s students have the most points accumulat-ed throughout the season.

We are also running our unique Event and Jumper Derby Day again this year, on July 25. The Event Derby is run under USEA Rules as a combined test in which the show jumping will have more solid obstacles var-ied terrain.

In the Jumper Derby, each division will consist of a Pow-er & Speed round, a Timed Jump-Off round, and a Derby round. There will be a Derby Hat Contest (the winner will get

a free night’s stay at the Inn) and tailgating spaces are available around the dressage and Jumper rings.

Kelly’s Ford provides an op-portunity to enjoy grounds rich with Civil War history. Our show rings are located where union cavalry divisions crossed the Rappahannock to attack the confederates initiating the battle of Kelly’s Ford.

Our 500 acre estate offers riv-er activities on the Rappahan-nock such as tubing, kayaking, canoeing, and fishing; and 10 primitive campsites.

The Inn at Kelly’s Ford offers 10 luxury suites, two houses (each with a two-stall barn and a paddock) and fine and casual dining. The Equestrian Cen-ter is pleased to accommodate your horses with overnight stall board or in one of our many paddocks. Come for the shows and stay for the weekend.
