“FOR THE RESIDENTS, BY THE RESIDENTS”

Happy Labor Day September 2015

It feels like Fall ……….Somewhere

Fall will be here soon, although here in Florida it’s

hard to tell. You’re going to have to wait until about

the third week of October before the daily high

temperatures drop to the low 80s. The folks at the

Florida climate center say Fall happens when the

daily low temperatures drop below 60 degrees and

stay there. In the Tampa Bay area that doesn’t usually

Happen until you’re eyeing turkey for Thanksgiving.

You know its fall in Florida when------

You put away your light green bathing suit in

favor of your brown one.

You can roll down the windows in your car

and not run the risk of melting

You can plant things without them withering

immediately

The stores put out the winter holiday

decorations.

Everywhere you turn there is some sort of

festival celebrating art, food, wine, crafts,

history, cars, gourds etc.

Although we don’t get the rainbow of falling

Leaves that other states do, we do see a lot

of acorns and random other seedlings.

Hey, that’s less raking for us.

Labor Day

Labor Day officially ends summer, as those who work enjoy

one final fling.

Blessed are those who bear the daily burden, of whom few

savants speak or minstrels sing,

Returning to the shallows of September, days of ease give

way to hours certain,

A long routine that wends its way towards winter,

Yearning for the promises of spring.

Our first board meeting of the Fall will be on Sept 21st at 9am in the card

board.

Sept 28th is “Good Neighbor Day”……So say Hi to your neighbors, ok !

WELCOME BACK

WOW!!!!! It is hard to believe that Labor Day weekend is nearing and summer is

quickly coming to an end. It seems like just last week that the season was just

beginning and the snowbirds were leaving.

I hope it has been a good and healthy summer season for all of you. It has been a

good summer here at Southfork and now, in just a few short weeks, most of the

snowbirds will be back and many of the activities and meetings will be starting again.

FIRST DAY OF AUTUMN!!!!!!

September 23rd is the first day of autumn but here in Florida it is like any other day of the year. Up

North you are already thinking of cold weather, snow and ice and we here in Florida can only go by the

news media on what is happening and not missing the cold but we sure do miss the fall colors.

So to all of us here in Florida, relax and enjoy with no worries about shovels or freezing cold!!!!

Women’s Club

On August 5th

, 11 members enjoyed a get together at "Sunrise" there

was plenty of food and a lot of laughs.

We are all very sad about the situation of Mary Bolin. A special

meeting is being called to discuss how we will help her in this difficult

moment.

We will look into distributing school supplies to 2 schools. Thanks

again to everyone who helped with this project.

We decided to go to Golden Corral for our next meeting on Sep. 2nd at

11:00 am.

See you around

Marielle

DO YOU KNOW WHO THIS IS????????

I got an idea to start an article on “Can you guess who this is” and I was

wondering if you would like to be part of this.

There is only one problem, my scanner does not work on my computer

so a picture would have to be emailed to me with a little info for the article ( ex: this person

grew up in Belair, Md or anything you would like to have in so everyone can try and guess so

they can try and figure it out ). You can ask someone who has a computer to email for you if

you do not have one so you can submit.

I need pictures of anyone when they were a child or teen so everyone would have to try and

guess who this is. I will place the article in the newsletter and the following month I will give

you the correct answer.

If interested, send to me @ [email protected] I will not disclose any info until the

following newsletter. This could be a lot of fun!!!!!!

Profile of the Month

Marielle Quain is a member of our Southfork Community. If you enjoy our

Woman's Club or enjoy our weekly bingo sessions, I am certain you realize

that Marielle is responsible for always being at the helm for these very

important activities. Every Wednesday guests enjoy playing Bingo at our

Clubhouse, other parks are also welcome to join us. It is work, not only

on Wednesday evening, but continually through the year, purchasing

equipment, bingo cards, etc. thank you Marielle for making Bingo such a

pleasure.

Also, the Woman's Club has had Marielle

as its president for several years.

Each year a new and exciting activity

is planned monthly, birthday wishes to

each member on their birthday month,

many, many charities are donated to. I

am not saying Marielle does not have

some help, but she is the cornerstone

of our Woman's Club. In future issues

I intend to mention several people who

work at her side. Whether it be a

delicious Chili Dinner, Soup and Salad

fund raiser, Marielle is doing the

shopping, setting up shop, and making

certain the wheels run smoothly.

Variety shows are also a wonderful fund

raiser and we all have certainly

enjoyed our most recent, Miss

Southfork. We must not forget

our yearly bazaar.

Thank you Marielle for all you

do, for all you have done. And

what you will

continue to do in the future. I

know it takes a Village, but I

also know it

takes one hard working

individual, with unselfish

thoughts to make our community

thrive, as it well does.

Marielle not only contributes to

the above activities, but she willingly joins all aspects of Southfork

activities, dancing, entertainment evenings, etc. She wants success always.

I for one appreciate her efforts.

9/7 – Labor Day Celebration - Labor Day is annually held on the first Monday

of September. It was originally organized to celebrate various labor associations'

strengths of and contributions to the United States economy. It is largely a day of

rest in modern times. Many people mark Labor Day as the end of the summer

season and a last chance to make trips or hold outdoor events.

9/11 – Everyone Remembers 9-11-2001! Let us take time to remember

that tragic day – one we will never forget as we look back in horror of the events.

We always remember where we were and what we were doing – just like when

President Kennedy was assassinated. I personally remember it with nightmares

as was working for American Airlines (Headquarters) in Fort Worth, TX. It was

indeed a horrible experience and chaos. If you get the chance, listen to Alan

Jackson's song, “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning). It says so

much and humbles us all.

9/13 – Grandparents' Day – Happy Grandparents Day to all you

Grandpas/Grandmas and Nanas and Papas and other names our grandchildren

have given us all!

9/22 & 9/23 – Yom Kipper – to all our Jewish friends and families.

9/23 – First Day of autumn. We will be ready for this!

9/28 – Tentatively planned – Good Neighbor Day in Southfork – Random

Acts of Kindness (Sandi has a sign-up sheet at the office, for volunteers!)

And finally, Happy Birthday to all you September guys and gals!

We wanted to find out what some of our favorite dining out places are within the

area (and some favorites are a few miles away). When I talked to many folks here

in Southfork, I was surprised to hear that many do not go out to eat because they

aren't sure where to go. Well, we hope this will help in some way if and when the

kitchen is “closed” at home. Also, these are personal preferences of folks, but you

may not agree, so it’s not “gospel.” In no particular order……….

Island Breeze (was Mainly New England) 7643 Gall Blvd., ZH – Fay & Mike like the

Cuban food at very reasonable prices - $8 - $10.

Beef O’Bradys, 7833 Gall Blvd., ZH – A favorite sports bar atmosphere and to many

newcomers. Jean and Marsha experienced Beefers with a full menu! They have great

Cuban sandwiches too.

(continued)……..

Page 11: 2015 09 southfork newsletter color

Poncho’s Villa, 32804 Pennsylvania Ave. (downtown), San Antonio. Very good

home-made Mexican food $8 - $10; however, a small place seats maybe 30-40 people and

being so popular, very busy. The service is great and turnover is fast, but get there early,

but if you gotta wait – it is worth it. One of Kathy’s favs and Larry and Jean also!

Rojas Mexican, Gall Blvd., ZH – One of Pete and Dixie’s favs – great food, decent prices.

Chilis, 7643 Gall Blvd., ZH – a favorite of several people. Wide variety menu and they

have coupons for specials on line. Busy place but pretty fast seating and service. Great

food.

Piccola Italia, 37502 State Road 54, ZH – Italian, pizza and even good fish. Bob and

Carol like the food and service. Reasonable prices.

DiMaggio’s That’s Amore, 5347 Gall Blvd., ZH – It’s Italian as you can tell. You get

enormous servings so petite eaters may want to share an entrée. Atmosphere is great –

visit Italia right here in ZH, FL. Food very good – service good. Impress your friends here.

Blackstone Reef and Grill, 38361 County Rd. 54, ZH – Salad bar available with full

menu and specials. Mike and Linda likes this place along with the entertainment in the bar

area. During the busy season, if you want to dine in the entertainment section,

reservations are suggested. I like this place too!

Ruby Tuesdays, 7909 Gall Blvd., ZH – An all American restaurant with very good food

and great salad bar. Tom and Judy like this place too as well as many others. Prices

reasonable.

Doc’s Pub and Grille, 14946 US 301, Dade City – All you can eat crab legs on Friday

nights ($24/person – you got to be hungry! Casual pub atmosphere. Service pretty good.

Smittys Smokehouse & Grill, 12803 US 301, Dade City – Very good barbeque at

reasonable prices. Many other menu options, including breakfast.

And lastly…….Tiki Bar, Homosassa, FL – a good drive but well worth it. Several say, the

“best shrimp around.” Sometimes long waiting periods and Carolyn and Jim really didn’t

want me to broadcast one of their fav dining-out places (because of the long lines). Sorry, Carolyn, but I just had to spill the “shrimp.”

This only touches the surface of great places to dine out in our area. We’ve tried to focus

on interesting places other than our favorite fast food joints. However, if you go to Taco Bell

and order from the $1.00 menu (and get a senior drink – free of charge, with refills) you will

not damage your bank account!!! Also, it is a great idea to follow newspaper

articles/internet on postings of dirty dining establishments. Most of these reports come

from the larger city areas. So, enjoy your dining out experience and have a great

September!

"Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning"(Written and Recorded by Alan

Jackson)

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?

Were you in the yard with your wife and children

Or working on some stage in L.A.?

Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke

Risin' against that blue sky?

Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor

Or did you just sit down and cry?

Did you weep for the children who lost their dear loved ones

And pray for the ones who don't know?

Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble

And sob for the ones left below?

Did you burst out with pride for the red, white and blue

And the heroes who died just doin' what they do?

Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer

And look at yourself and what really matters?

I'm just a singer of simple songs

I'm not a real political man

I watch CNN but I'm not sure I can tell

You the difference in Iraq and Iran

But I know Jesus and I talk to God

And I remember this from when I was young

Faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us

And the greatest is love

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?

Were you teaching a class full of innocent children

Or driving down some cold interstate?

Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor

In a crowded room did you feel alone?

Did you call up your mother and tell her you loved her?

Did you dust off that Bible at home?

Did you open your eyes, hope it never happened

Close your eyes and not go to sleep?

Did you notice the sunset the first time in ages

Or speak to some stranger on the street?

Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow

Or go out and buy you a gun?

Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watchin'

And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns?

Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers

Did you stand in line and give your own blood?

Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family

Thank God you had somebody to love?

Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?

SNOWBIRDS

Here they come, ready or not! The snowbirds should be arriving in a steady stream starting in

September, October and November. License plates tell of their origins, but they’re all

coming to the land of palm tree-lined driveways and warm weather. Bring them on, I say!

Those of us who endure the hot, sticky summer months are finally starting to get out more.

We’re eating on the lanai, taking walks without being dripping wet and, well, here come the

traffic jams, the crowded doctor’s offices and stores, but wait---it also energizes our lifestyle

and our economy. Yes, come on down, all you snowbirds!

Clubs of all sorts exist in the winter but we still exist here with activities while you are away..

Friendships are big for snowbirds……..Put on a parade, a fun day or a fundraiser and you’ll

find snowbirds right in the middle of it all. Snowbirds who flock to Florida for the months of

September thru May, we love you and can’t wait for you to get back and get the community

rolling again with fun and laughter. Hurry, hurry so we can get the parties started!!!!

articles or are in charge of any type of card games or activities. We have a lot

of newer residents in the park over the last 12 months and I want to make sure

the dates and times are current on all events held each week and correctly

placed in the newsletter.

Please do not assume I know the changes or deletions of any game activity and

if there have been any changes please let me know by the 15th of each month.

Crane Family

Submitted by, Kathy Gallick

We have a family of cranes, I believe they are looking for a

home on Mesquite.

Saw them browsing, with their three children just the other day.

Apparently the children are with the "bird sitter" today. They

seem to like their half of the road in the middle as a rule, so

be cautious, would never want to harm the new possible

neighbors.

I would not feed, could become a pecking problem.

Life is good!
