Welcome  to  Our  New  Organ  Scholar!

Shawn Hai has been appointed to the Waddell Organ Scholarship in the Parish, studying under our Director of Music Evanne Sherringham.

Shawn is currently a Year 9 student at Hunter Valley Grammar School, having earned a music scholarship there.

He has been playing piano for our Saturday Vigil Mass for several months, and is currently preparing for his ATCL and A. Mus.A exams on piano and playing 6th Grade cello. His other interests are playing chess and he is a whizz on the Rubik’s cube.

Shawn has an older sister Dawn, who attends Grossman High School, and his parents, James and Stella own a Chinese Restaurant on High Street Maitland, where Shawn can be seen often helping his parents.

The family came to Sydney from Hong Kong when Shawn was 8 and moved to Maitland about 5 years ago. While still living in Hong Kong, Shawn with his mother Stella, travelled from Hong Kong to China every week where Stella learned Chinese harp and Shawn began his piano tuition.

Shawn entered 4 Sections of Lake Macquarie Eisteddfod last year and won 3 first places and one 2nd place. Because he did so well, he has been invited to play at the special fund raising recital for the Eisteddfod this year.

Welcome  to  Emma  Haining  In February the Parish welcomed Emma Haining to her new role as Personal Assistant to our Parish Priest. Emma works from the Parish Office on Wednesdays and Fridays supporting Fr David with his administration. We asked Emma to introduce herself:

My name is Emma Haining and as some you will know I have joined the East Maitland Team as Fr David’s part time Personal Assistant. I previously worked with Fr David at the Diocesan Office. I also work part time at Christ Church Cathedral. I was received into the Anglican Communion in 2010.

My background is in music. I completed a Bachelor of Music (Honours) in 1998 and a Master of Creative Arts in 2004. I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Theology. My love and interest in Renaissance and Baroque music, and sacred choral in particular music is being beautifully now I learn about the historical and theological context in which it was written. My main instrument is voice.

I have a brother, three nephews and one niece. I also have two “Fur Babies” my much loved cats Artemis and Athena, “The Goddesses”. All bring me a great deal of joy.

Retirement  Living  in  Tenambit  For many years the Parish Council has work towards the development of a retirement village within the Parish for members of the congregation and others who wish to live within an Anglican community. This dream was centred on the St Egwin's Church site in Collinson Street.

It became clear that the Parish itself would not be able to build and maintain such a village on our own property. However, we are thrilled and excited to be able to announce that our dream of an Anglican retirement village on Collinson Street has been fulfilled… just slightly further down the road.

Anglican Care (an organisation of the Diocese of Newcastle) has purchased Northwood Retirement Living in Collinson Street. The purchase of the Village has been welcomed by residents and their families alike as it has been plagued by issues since the initial development stalled in the hands of the previous operator.

The first stage of Northwood Retirement Living was developed in 2007, but subsequent stages of the development have stalled and the village remains largely incomplete with only 12 of the originally approved 38 dwellings having been constructed.

It is Anglican Care’s plan to lodge a Section 96(1) with Maitland City Council to vary the existing Development Application slightly and dependant on approval of the variation, Anglican Care’s plans for the village are as follows:

Stage 1 construction of 11 units and a community centre with a planned completion date of December 2015.

Stage 2 construction of 13 units with a planned completion date of December 2016.

The acquisition of Northwood Retirement Living is consistent with Anglican Care's Strategic Plan and will assist in expanding the geographic footprint of Anglican Care's services across the Diocese of Newcastle, as well as fulfilling our long-held dream of having a retirement village in Tenambit.

Anglican  MinistQj  to  Continue  on  St  EgVin’s  Site  After many years of the Church being locked and unused for worship, Saint Egwin’s Church was packed for a final Eucharist on Sunday 30th November 2014. At the end of the service the church building was de-consecrated by Bishop Peter Stuart, the Assistant Bishop of Newcastle.

In order to ensure that Anglican ministry continues on the site, the site has been sold to the Samaritans Foundation, the welfare agency of the Diocese of Newcastle. We will be informing you about exciting plans for the development of the site, and our ministry partnership with the Samaritans Foundation in due course.

Contracts were exchanged on 12th March and final settlement of the transfer of the land to the Samaritans Foundation will be effected on 10th April 2015. Funds from the sale will be added to the Saint Peter’s Endowment Trust.

The stained glass window from the church has been removed and will be installed in Saint Peter’s Church in due course. The font (made from the same stone as Saint Peter’s) has also been re-located to Saint Peter’s and will be used as a holy water stoop after it has been repaired. The church bell has been gifted to Tenambit Public School in recognition of the long connection between the church and the school.

Giving  thanks  for  fistj    years  of  music  ministQj:Kath  Waddell  Kathleen Anne Hargreaves was born at Barraba, a Western Slopes township of a little over 1,000 people, her dad a local school teacher! She was baptised at age six months in the local Anglican Church of St Laurence. I guess it was destined that St Laurence’s would one day possess a beautiful Thomas S. Jones & Sons pipe organ.

Her dad’s occupation took the family to a new town every two or three years. Kath began school at Ungarie in the Riverina district at age five but could already read and write, having ‘sat-in’ during classes while her Dad was headmaster at Bogan Gate.

Kath was confirmed when the family were living at Ballina on the NSW North Coast. Is it a surprise that her Dad was the Choir Master and a tenor of note? Kath’s Dad became an inspector of Schools and it was at Narrabri that Kath continued her secondary schooling, having commenced at Ballina and completed her Intermediate Certificate in 1950. Her Leaving Certificate was obtained in 1952 when the family was living in Taree.

Kath began an undergraduate degree at New England University College, at that time an annex of Sydney University, graduating with Honours (BA Hons) and a Diploma of Education (Dip Ed) in 1957. Her first appointment was to the infants department of Moss Vale School the following year.

Her next appointment in 1961, was as an English History teacher at Gateshead High School (Lake Macquarie) and was destined to be her last, she meeting a handsome, strapping Water Board Engineer named John Waddell. John had moved to Newcastle to work on the Grahamstown Dam project, having transferred from Sydney Water Board after the completion of Warragamba. The romance blossomed following a chance meeting at the ABC Youth Music Group.

Kath and John were married at All Saints, Belmont in 1962. They probably had to bring in an organist as Kath was All Saints’ organist in the six months prior to her wedding.

After their marriage, Kath and John moved to East Maitland and her involvement with St Peter’s and the music of St Peter’s dates from then. Did I forget to mention, in addition to the music, 1963 saw the birth of Jim, followed by Bruce in 1966 and Ian in 1968.

Kath’s music began with piano lessons at the local Convent when the family was living at Ballina. Her tuition continued as the family moved from town to town, culminating with ‘letters’ (A.Mus.A) while she was still at school in Taree. Her first ‘gig’ on a church organ was at age 9, on a pedal organ at Ballina. Seventy years later the love affair continues and this time I’m not talking about John!

In 1961 and again in 1974, Kath undertook part-time organ tuition under Cathedral organists Keith Noake and William Pierce, her scholarship funded jointly by the Cathedral and the Conservatorium. In 1964 she was appointed ‘Assistant organist’ at St Peter’s, being advanced to Organist and Choir Master in 1969, the title being changed to the more politically correct Director of Music during the incumbency of Fr Greg Holmes, a position she held continuously until her recent retirement. Kath was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2007 for her “Service to Church Music”.

The contribution of Kathleen Anne Waddell O.A.M., B.A. (Hons), Dip. Ed., A.Mus.A.,A.Cert.C.M.is best paraphrased from St Matthew’sGospel in verse 25:23: – “Well done good and Faithful Servant”!

Kath’s Ministry was celebrated with a service of Choral Evensong, with choristers past and present coming together to celebrate the wonderful ministry that spanned a half century (and a quarter of the life of this parish).

Kath and John Waddell were in conversation with Kevin Short

Thank  you  mom  Kath  To my parish family:

How do I begin to thank you all for the love and appreciation you expressed as we celebrated my music ministry in the parish? It has always been a ‘labour of love’ and your support and affirmation have meant so much to me.

The beautiful evensong and the exciting reception which followed it were absolutely wonderful, and will remain a treasured memory.

I am looking forward to life as an ordinary parishioner with an occasional role as an organist and choir member under Evanne’s leadership.

 With my love, Kath.

Palm  Sunday  ConcerT

In Saint Peter’s Church on Palm Sunday evening, 29th March, Maitland’s Counterpoint Chamber Choir will present a choral concert featuring Vivaldi’s Gloria. The concert will be a fitting start to Holy Week and will be the first time Counterpoint has performed in St Peter’s since their acclaimed presentation of Handel’s Messiah in 2010 under then director Evanne Sherringham.

Counterpoint is now under the direction of Dr Robb Dennis, local musician and teacher who has a rich background in singing and conducting, having moved to Maitland in late 2013 to teach music at Maitland Grossmann High School. Nine years ago he moved to Australia from America, where he had studied conducting with Maestro Helmut Rilling and prepared choruses for Maestros Carlo Ponti and Jon Robertson of the San Bernardino and Redlands Symphony Orchestras.

The concert will commence with a varied selection of classical pieces including Ave Verum by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Locus Iste by Anton Bruckner together with the much more modern but equally famous Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Requiem’. Amongst other items featured in the first part of the concert will be a new piece in the Counterpoint repertoire, the hauntingly beautiful arrangement by modern American composer Greg Jasperse of Abide With Me set to the traditional tune ‘Eventide’.

The second part of the concert will feature Italian Baroque master Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria. Born in Venice, Vivaldi (1678 - 1741) was a celebrated composer and violin virtuoso, much admired and imitated by his contemporaries including Johan Sebastian Bach. however on his death, the music of Vivaldi disappeared from the histories and biographical dictionaries, even in his own country. The revival of Vivaldi’s music, especially his instrumental works which amount to a catalogue of over 500 pieces did not get underway until the 20th century. His undoubtedly most famous instrumental work is his series of violin concertos The Four Seasons. The Gloria received its first modern performance at a Vivaldi festival in Siena Italy in 1939 and has now, after a neglect of over two hundred years, become one of the most popular items in the choral repertory. The edition Counterpoint will be singing at the concert is a faithful rendition of the Vivaldi original. It is believed that the Gloria was composed for the Seminario musicale dell’Ospitale della Pietà, one of several charitable institutions in Venice for the care and education of orphaned girls and for whom Vivaldi was associated for most of his creative life.

The entire 12 movements of the work will be performed as the second half of the concert with the three soloists also coming from the Counterpoint ensemble, the two sopranos, Jackie Ward and Breanna McMillan and the alto Lara Tuyl. The choir will be accompanied by Megan O’Neill. The concert will commence at 7:00pm. Tickets costing $20 per person can be pre-booked for collection at the door either by email at [email protected] or through any member of Counterpoint. They can also be purchased at the door on the evening.

Counterpoint is excited to be returning to Saint Peter’s for this special concert and is very pleased to be able to offer this presentation of beautiful music on Palm Sunday.

News  mom  Saint  Peter’s  Emergency  Relief  Thank you so much to all who donated to our Christmas Appeal. This year we distributed 124 Hampers, 95 Food Parcels, and 241 gifts.

The gifts were not wrapped and the clients were able to choose what they liked. Our gift shop elves Kathy and Gail stated this was very successful and gave the clients much pleasure.

Also a huge thank you to the volunteers - many gave extra hours to collect food from schools, to shop and then helped with the big job of packing hampers, food parcels and sorting gifts - very much appreciated.

Please continue to contribute food to the baskets at the back of Church. We would like to hear from anyone who could assist with collecting bread on Wednesday evenings once or twice each month.

Families    Growing  in  Faith  Contact Elizabeth Robinson for more information

Families  worship  at  all  of  our  ser5ices,  and  are  always  welcome.  God  Time:  Family  Eucharist God Time is our community for children and families to come together, have fun, and grow closer to God and to each other.

We have created this service to be a casual, relaxed way for families to worship together. We value child involvement and engagement, so that they can learn about faith in a way that works for them. We often have children taking part in prayers, and actively taking part in the talks/sermon for that week.

God Time has been designed to be a place where parents, grandparents as well as children can come together and connect with each other - this is why having a meal together afterward is such an important part of the afternoon. We arrange to have a simple meal together after each service, saving parents the need to rush home and cook, but mostly creating a space to chat while the kids run around and have fun.

Everyone is invited and all are welcome! Come along and be part of our family! We meet at 4pm on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month in the Church.

Play  Time Meeting in the Ministry Centre every Friday in term time for pre-school children and their carers from 10 am – 12 noon.

Junior  Choir Meeting at 4.30 pm until 5.30 pm on Fridays during term time to rehearse in the Church, the choir sings once each month on Sunday mornings. This is a great opportunity to give your children an opportunity to experience singing choral music, with music tuition from Evanne Sherringham. Boys and girls from 7 years up are welcome.

Apis  Te:  Youth  Group Meeting on the second and fourth Fridays of each month for young people who are 11 years and older, with others from neighbouring parishes. We meet from 6.30 – 8.30 pm, the cost is $2 per person per session. The location varies, please check the website for the latest information or contact Elizabeth.

Sunday  School Meeting every Sunday during the Sung Mass at 9.30 am.

Mothers’  Union Meeting on the 3rd Monday of each month in the Ministry Centre. Contact Judy Redden.
