Downtown Sioux Falls has blossomed in recent years, bringing a wide variety of residential, retail and

entertainment options to the community.A recent addition to the Phillips Avenue businesses is the 605

Running Company, which opened in July 2014. The company goal is to “foster a community of happy healthy runners living and growing together in South Dakota.”

This family-owned business works toward that goal by giving customers an individualized experience to help them achieve their personal fitness goals.

The ownership team includes the three-brother team of Grant, Logan and Paul Watley, who all have long resumes of running accomplishments beginning in their high school days. While they are Nebraska natives, they have had connections to Sioux Falls

talking with you about any running history you have and what your goals are,” says Earney. “Then, we use an iPad to capture video of you running from several different angles. By playing the video back in slow motion, we can help you find the right shoe for your unique running form.”

The team will identify shoe options so that you can take a test run – literally – to see which one fits you best.

“It’s great to be part of a team that is so passionate about what they do,” adds Earney. “All of us love running, and when you have something that brings you joy, you want to share it with others. We have a great time interacting with runners in Sioux Falls – both new and experienced.”

To help strengthen the running community here, the store’s team created the 605 Running Club. The club not only connects runners with each other, but they also plan several events each year that will give something back to the community. Members of the club are required to participate in three races per year wearing their 605 Running Co. shirt, attend one group run per month, volunteer at one philanthropy event each year and participate in at least five of the club’s social events each year.

In return, says Earney, the members gain new connections with other runners as well as other perks like discounts at the store.

605 Running Co. carries several brands of shoes, apparel, nutrition items, watches and other items to ensure the runners have everything they need.

“For us, it isn’t just about helping people compete in races. We want to share our love of running and the ways running can improve your health and change your life,” says Earney. “It’s just about taking that first step, even though you might be nervous about it, and setting goals for yourself.”

Their philosophy may just be summed up in this quote from Rikki Rogers: “Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.”

Run down to this store and get your 2015 off to a healthy and

active start.

Because you are losing fat and excess water weight not muscle like most other diets!By the time you’re done with this program you would have lost a lot of weight, many inches of fat, and reset your hypothalamus gland which regulates how and where you store fat in the future - that’s why so many people don’t gain any weight back years later.

At the turn of the 20th Century, if you were visiting Luverne, Minnesota, you might arrive by train. Or perhaps you’d ride

into town via horse-drawn buggy. And, if you needed a place to spend the night, chances are you’d check into the Hotel Manitou.

Over the years, the hotel, which was built in 1901, was there for travelers with its 36 sleeping rooms and dining room, later adding a beauty shop, barber shop and a bar. It closed as a hotel in the mid-1980s and became home to various uses from a

carpet business to efficiency apartments.Bill Frakes had gotten into the real estate business in Luverne,

buying properties and fixing them up, and one day the owner of the Manitou property approached him saying he thought the property was “just right” for Bill and his wife Nancy.

The couple decided they were ready to take on the renovation project and convert the old hotel into their own personal residence.

Bill explains with a sly grin, “We’re in the middle of a five-year project….that started in 1991.”

They had to begin by gutting the inside, and over the past two decades, the couple has restored the original character of the hotel while adding modern conveniences, like more bathrooms than were available to hotel guests who had to share.

It is a step back in time when you come into what was the original hotel lobby. A quilted wall hanging made by a family friend depicts the original hotel exterior, and a framed black and white postcard from the early 1900s also pays tribute to the building’s history.

The restoration efforts uncovered the original wood floor, and you can see the outline where the hotel’s counter used to be. Standing behind the line, Bill shows where the floor dips a little.

“That’s where the cash register was, so it’s worn where the hotel clerk would have always been standing.”

Page 27: 2015 01 etcmagazine volume14 issue2

etc. for her | January 2015 27

Through a set of double doors is the space that originally served as the hotel’s dining room. It’s now a sitting area with a bar built by a friend of the family. With true brass rails and copper panels affixed to the wood, it certainly looks like it has been there from the start.

Another sitting area and office are in the area that was the original kitchen. The Frakeses also created a bathroom enclosed in its own angled room with a roof, stone walls and a window that looks from the sink into the office area.

Many of the office area’s furnishings bring the past into the present, like an old church pulpit that stands in the corner, antique typewriters, colorful pieces of glassware that sit in the window openings and a traditional fainting couch covered in a colorful tapestry-style upholstery.

Bill created a connecting room that begins where the original structure ends at the 1,800 square foot garage. But, he didn’t just use an ordinary doorway from the original back door through this new sunroom – he created a bridge that crosses an indoor water feature.

Just off the old counter area in the foyer is a coat room with an oversized wardrobe that used to be behind the hotel desk. Through the coat room is the entrance to a bathroom that has the original walk-in urinal and an enclosure for the toilet, which has slotted doors painted in a crackle finish to give the appearance

of what it may have originally looked like. The bathroom has the original brick wall, and the couple used bricks protruding from the wall as shelves to hold nostalgic bath and shaving items.

The Frakeses created a large kitchen and dining area at the back of the house, incorporating bricks that came from the

Beaver Creek Main Street store, as well as some sandstone that Bill found…which is a common theme for much of the brick, stone, wood and window panes throughout the house.

In the corner of the dining room is a spiral staircase leading down to the basement level. The triangular wood steps were

made from shelves that came from the Merrill Shoe Store. At the bottom of the stairs is the game room…a favorite spot when family comes to visit. The basement is filled with interesting pieces like old gas pumps, windows that came from the old Palace Theater, old showroom doors from a car dealership that

separate the game room from the TV area and mirrored shutters on the windows that provide a little extra energy efficiency.

A kitchenette, dining table and walk-in wine cellar are in the corner of the lower level that used to be the bar. Being located near the train station, the hotel bar had a long history with

travelers passing through Luverne. In the bar area that the Frakeses created, Nancy used a

multitude of wine corks to create an inset cork-board into one of the columns and also used the corks to create a border around the ceiling.

Old hotel meeting rooms in the lower level have been transformed into bedrooms. On one wall in the long hallway is a display created with several old number plates from the hotel doors and a large jar of room keys.

The hall leads to one of Nancy’s favorite spots to sit – a sun

room with large, angled windows and walls made from rocks that came from all around Nobles County. With a little heater in the corner, it’s a great spot to curl up with a book during the winter, but, she says, the large window area makes it a little too hot for summer seating.

Page 32: 2015 01 etcmagazine volume14 issue2

A staircase near the hallway leads back up to the main entryway and back into the foyer and steps to the upper two floors.

While floors two and three are still “in progress,” several of the bedroom suites are complete and include rich colors on the walls, antique furniture, ornate wood, glass inserts in the doors, individual bathrooms in each suite and even balconies that overlook the main foyer or other “community areas” of the home. Stained glass panels created by Hallstrom Glass Studio of Luverne hang in windows throughout the home. When the work is complete, the home will have 9 bedroom suites and another 3 or 4 “spare bedrooms.”

The corner rooms on the second and third floors are particularly unique with their open view of Luverne’s downtown area, and another room on the third floor has a bookcase that opens to a staircase passageway connecting it to one of the suites on the second floor.

The transformed building is an amazing combination of vision, hard work and pieces of history. While the front of the building may always say Hotel Manitou, for Bill and Nancy Frakes, it is simply…home.

After

Before

I have always struggled with my weight and have tried every diet ever invented. When the diets didn’t work, I tried the idea of “eat less and work out more.” When that didn’t work, I began to accept that I would just be overweight for the rest of my life. When I heard about Ideal Protein, I was VERY reluctant to give it a try. With some persuasion, I did and now I can say I have lost 85 lbs.

Not only have I lost the weight, but I have lost an amazing amount of inches all over my body. I have gone from a size 18/20 to a size 2/4. Since I have lost this weight, I feel fabulous. I have more energy, more self confidence and shopping, which I used to dread, became my favorite sport!

Heat oven to 350˚. Unwrap caramels. In saucepan, melt caramels with butter and sweetened condensed milk. Remove cake from oven, pour caramel on top and spread evenly. Pour remaining chocolate batter over top of caramel, bake another 20 min or until set. Remove from oven to cool.

It’s that time of year again; the time to make (and probably break) New Year’s Resolutions. You’ll hear people promising

that they will do this or that. Diets will be started and abandoned, bad habits quit and rekindled. The membership at the gym will swell to new heights, until about the middle of February when those new members begin to lose interest. I know this because I have been one of those people, promising to visit the gym daily, then by mid-month revising the goal to a couple times a week, and finally admitting to myself that driving by the gym does not count as a workout. This year, I’m being honest, so let’s talk about a couple of things I won’t be giving up.

GlutenSuddenly everything is being offered as gluten-free. So

I started doing a little research. Should I give up gluten? The

answer is a resounding NO. I will not be giving up gluten. Some people, estimated at about 7 percent of the population, suffer from celiac disease – an autoimmune disorder that causes painful and sometimes life-threatening intestinal problems. For those folks, giving up gluten is a necessity, not a lifestyle choice. For the rest of us, gluten is not evil.

Unless you have celiac disease or a real sensitivity to gluten, numerous studies have shown that there aren’t any good reasons to cut gluten out of your diet. If fact, by giving up gluten, you may miss out on many nutrient-rich foods. At least one study shows that gluten proteins help to regulate the healthy bacteria in digestive system; others studies link gluten to better triglyceride levels and blood pressure.

Additionally, a leading consumer magazine compared dozens of gluten-free products to their regular counterparts and found

that in most cases you would pay more for the gluten-free version and they were often higher in fat, calories or sodium. The “healthy” choice was actually worse for you.

So, my resolution is to order a pizza with the high-gluten crust, thank you very much.

DrinkingWhile it’s clear that drinking too much is not good for you and

driving while intoxicated is a serious crime, this year I resolve NOT to quit drinking. The antioxidants in alcohol and especially in red wine have been found to help increase HDL (the so-called good cholesterol) and protect arteries against damage. I’m not a doctor, and I’m sure many doctors would say the evidence isn’t strong enough for a teetotaler to start hitting the bottle, but since I already enjoy a glass of wine, I see no reason to quit.

Going VegetarianI love vegetables; broccoli, spinach, carrots, celery, corn, you

name it, if it’s a veg, I probably like it one way or another. But, I also love pork and beef, poultry and seafood. That’s because I’m human, and as a species, humans are omnivores. It is human nature to eat a diet that includes both animals and vegetables. Meatless Mondays are a great idea. A salad for lunch is perfect. If you chose to eat one or the other, more power to you. But for me, I’ll resolve NOT to go vegetarian; instead I’ll order the rack of lamb with a side of asparagus.

LocalI love the idea of eating locally raised foods. I’m a huge fan

of the farmers markets and try to buy eggs from local growers. But, I’m also realistic, we live in South Dakota; fresh oranges don’t fall off the trees in my backyard; sustainable tuna does not swim in the Big Sioux and my garden looks pretty barren this time of year. So I will resolve to continue to choose local when I can, but I’m not going to be a fanatic about it. Fresh vegetables from California or South America are better than no vegetables. Frozen seafood is better than nothing and until global warming gets to the point where olive groves spring up around Harrisburg, I’ll continue to get my oil from Italy.

So there you have it. In 2015, I really won’t be changing much. I’ll resolve to avoid the fads, and stick with what tastes good and feels right. I’ll try to avoid extremes or excesses in any direction. I think I can stick to that, at least until mid-February.

Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

Start 2015 with Chile, Not Chilly By riccarDo taraBelsi

When the chill is in the air and the wind takes your breath away, you know it’s January in South Dakota. The best

device that we can use to evade the cold, besides a nice fireplace and a heavy blanket, is our minds. The mind is a terrible thing to waste (and the waist is a terrible thing to mind, but I digress.) Your mind can take you anywhere you want it to, and the perfect glass of wine can help you get there. During this chilly season, try wines from a not-so-chilly place: Chile. It’s summer there, so take your mind off the frost and sip on a wine from one of the world’s most exciting places to grow vines.

Drive beyond the dusty provincial towns and the Chilean landscape is carpeted with ¼ million acres of grapes that ripen perfectly in bright sunlight, warm days, and cool evenings. Labor, land, and grape prices are low so these wineries can make high quality wines at a fraction of the cost of those located in California, Australia, or Europe. Consequently, you can buy excellent Chilean wines at a low cost. One of the best wines that I’ve come across from Chile has to be Lapostolle. What a way to start the new year!

Lapostolle was founded by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet in 1994. The Marnier Lapostolle

family, founders and owners of the world-renowned liqueur Grand Marnier, is famous for producing spirits and liqueurs, but the family has also been involved in winemaking for generations.

In creating Lapostolle, the family has pursued the same uncompromising approach to quality that made Grand Marnier a global success. Its objective is as simple as it is ambitious: to create world-class wines using French expertise and the superb terroirs of Chile.

Today, Lapostolle owns 380 hectares in three different vineyards in Casablanca, Cachapoal, and Colchagua Valley, all premium areas for wine production in Chile and produces a total of 200,000 cases spread over Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, and Syrah.

An interesting note about Chile’s signature grape Carmenere: The world was aware that Chile’s Merlot was unique, and local growers were certain that not all of the vines were the same, but it wasn’t until 1994 that French ampelographer Jean Michel Boursiquot finally attached a name to the variant variety: Carmenere, a red variety from France that arrived in Chile prior to the phylloxera (vine-eating bug) crisis. Because the late-ripening variety is difficult to manage in cool climates and highly

Page 39: 2015 01 etcmagazine volume14 issue2

etc. for her | January 2015 39

susceptible to phylloxera, it was never replanted in its native Bordeaux and had long been forgotten until its rediscovery in Chile. Since that time, extensive work has been done to separate the two varieties and treat each according to its own specific requirements, resulting in major style changes in both.

Despite its nearly 500 years of existence, Chile’s wine industry is fresh, young, and evolving to meet the needs of today’s ever more demanding world markets. Chilean wines are now available in more than 90 countries on 5 continents. Exports to Europe, the United States, and particularly to Asia have grown steadily each year. Chile currently ranks as the 9th largest producer of wine by country (the U.S. ranks 4th behind France, Italy, and Spain.)

I highly recommend trying a Chilean wine in the near future. If you’re looking for a good, hearty red, then I suggest you run to your nearest wine store and ask about their wines from Chile. You’ll be surprised at the quality you will find under $10, impressed with the ones that are under $20, and astonished, if you can find one, at the high end Chilean selections that retail for over $50. Chile is the place where the wines are twice as good at half the price. Enjoy your New Year responsibly. Carpe Vino!

See a Doctor and Stay Right Where You AreVideo visits now available only at Sanford Health

Your calendar fills up fast. Work obligations. Family celebrations. School plays. Basketball games.

But what about when you’re sick? How do you make time for a visit to the doctor with so much to do?

Now you don’t have to worry with video visits offered at Sanford Health. When those coughs, colds, aches, pains or rashes strike, all you need is your computer and an Internet connection, and you can stay right where you are – no matter where it is.

Lindsay Huser took advantage of the convenience of video visits during a work conference about four hours away from her home.

“My eye started getting very red and sensitive to light,” the Sioux Falls resident says. “I had three more days of the conference before returning home, and knew I needed to see a doctor before then.”

Her dilemma? Her health care provider was not nearby. Lindsay was hesitant to reach out to a physician or clinic outside of Sanford Health, and then her mother told her about video visits.

“But when I learned I could see a provider at Sanford, it was a such a comforting feeling,” Lindsay says. “I’ve always been happy with the care I’ve received there, so it was nice to have that option even though I was so far from home.”

Video visits were introduced this fall, to help deliver expert care in a convenient package. This way you don’t miss a beat in your life, but still receive the care you need to stay healthy.

“Sanford Health is committed to not only providing you with unmatched expertise for your health, but also unmatched conveniences to meet the demands of your busy life,” says Allison W. Suttle, MD, chief medical information officer at Sanford Health. “Video visits are one of many ways we are helping you have more control of your time and how you manage your health care.”

After logging in to her My Sanford Chart account, Lindsay answered a few questions to determine if a video visit would be beneficial in her situation. She scheduled an appointment and soon had a prescription in her hands.

“The entire process from beginning to end was so simple and seamless,” she says. “The provider even found the nearest pharmacy for me, and sent the prescription right over for me to pick up.”

Lindsay’s eye quickly cleared up, and she was able to attend the rest of her conference with no complications.

“I am grateful for this level of convenience when needing to see a doctor,” she says. “I would recommend this to anyone, and will not hesitate to use it in the future.”

Just like Lindsay, you can keep your life on track without missing a beat when illness hits with video visits at Sanford Health.

If a trip to the museum with your family sounds like it might be the most boring and whined about moment of your Chicago

vacation, you’ll be happy to know it won’t. The Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) wants visitors to have fun in the halls.

That means you don’t have to whisper, and you certainly don’t have to walk in a straight line to see the museum. You can skip down the hall, ask question and even make some art of your own with the family.

Rebecca Baldwin, director of public affairs at AIC, said winter is a great time to bring families to the museum for even more fun. “With free admission for kids under 14, the Art Institute of Chicago is a perfect family outing,” she said. “The winter months are a bit quieter than the warmer times of the year. With school in session, not as many tourists are traveling to the Midwest. It’s a great opportunity to spend quality time among some of our most popular works of art. The galleries are less crowded so it’s easier to linger before, say, American Gothic or Nighthawks and really study the paintings.”

Sioux Falls’ Washington Pavilion’s Director of the Visual Arts Center, Kara Dirkson, said museums all over the country have to be creative to keep visitors coming back, so they’re making exhibits more interactive and fun. “Gone are the days when art museums can go on just reputation,” she said. “In order to be relevant, there has to be some level of participation with visitors.”

AIC does just that by inviting visitors to interact with their art in many ways. Their website has a lot of photos of their most famous pieces of art. They encourage parents to print out a few of them and bring them along as a sort of scavenger hunt.

Parents don’t have to worry about not knowing some of the art that’s in the AIC’s walls. Most people will recognize Grant Wood’s American Gothic – the painting of the man and woman with a pitchfork in front of an Iowa farmhouse – or Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks, the painting that looks into a bright street diner from the dark Greenwich Avenue in New York City.

AIC’s education department suggests parents choose their

scavenger hunt photos by the development level of their child. For example, a baby may be fascinated with bold, brightly-colored modern art or art with faces and activities they would recognize like a child in a bath or a mother holding her child. Older kids may be more interested in activities found in paintings like picnics or dancing.

Speaking of those activities, how about a family game where you imitate what’s in the painting. See if your family can pose like the stoic man and woman in American Gothic, or if they can recreate Picasso’s mother and child painting.

To make it even more kid-appealing, take a selfie with a painting. Rebecca Baldwin from AIC suggests. “The most photographed work in the museum is probably Grant Wood’s American Gothic, because it is so recognizable to so much of the world. People come from all over to see that painting and a lot of them like to pose in front of it,” she said. “It was one of the first photos Katy Perry took when she visited the museum last summer.”

Baldwin also suggests every family should visit the Ryan Education Center at the museum and do some art-making

activities, get a self-guide to the museum and play games. “You can introduce children to the museum’s encyclopedic collection with a variety of hands-on activities in the Vitale Family Room, where you’ll find puzzles based on masterpieces you’ll see in

the galleries and art books for young readers,” she said. “You can register for workshops and other programs. Themes change constantly, so there’s always something new to do.”

Like most museums, AIC does have a “no touch” policy, but

there’s one room where that rule does not apply. Of course, it’s a favorite among families. Baldwin said, “In the Elizabeth Morse Touch Gallery, children can experience how the sense of touch can enrich their appreciation of art.”

The Touch Gallery was originally designed for visitors with visual impairments, but it quickly became a place for everyone to touch art. The sculptures in the gallery are all of the human

face. They are made from bronze and marble and represent different periods in art history. Families love to explore facial expressions, clothing styles and accessories on the sculptures using only their sense of touch.

From the front door of the museum opening to the closing of the car door at the end of the trip, the Art Institute of Chicago is a great addition to any Chicago itinerary.

Pinkeye? Don’t PanicWhile not serious, it can be contagious

Just say the word “pinkeye” at your child’s daycare, playgroup, school or even among your friends at work, and you’re likely

to see reactions of fear and dread. Actually, the condition most often is not serious, and sometimes,

it’s not even contagious. Yet to be on the safe side, if your child’s eyes are pink or red, itchy, watery, painful or producing matter, he or she should be seen by your child’s pediatrician or primary care provider.

“Pinkeye” is a generic term for conjunctivitis, which is inflammation of the tissue covering the white part of the eye and inside of the eyelids.

It can be caused by allergies or an irritant, but most of the time, it’s caused by a bacterial or viral infection. The bacteria or virus can be spread from person to person if the person with pinkeye touches her eye, then spreads that eye discharge to an object or another person, who in turn touches his eye. “It’s easily passed

between toddlers because they touch everything,” said Shari Eich, MD, Pediatrician with Avera Medical Group McGreevy 7th Avenue.

It’s less likely to be passed among elementary-age children, teens or adults. “The best prevention is frequent hand washing,” Dr. Eich said, as well as washing toys and other surfaces that children touch often.

Viral infections are those that often go through a daycare. Viral infections of the eye often come with other symptoms of an upper-

respiratory virus, like coughing, sore throat, sneezing or sniffling. Children who have a cold virus can spread the virus to their eyes if they get mucus on their hands and then wipe their eyes.

Unfortunately, when it’s viral, antibiotic eye drops don’t help, and they won’t prevent contagious spread. Eye drops only help when the infection is bacterial.

“It can be difficult to determine whether it is viral or bacterial, so it is best to see your doctor. If it’s bacterial, antibiotic eye drops will help. If it’s viral, we treat the symptoms with warm compresses, artificial tears and just time,” Dr. Eich said.

Most children with pinkeye that’s caused by a virus get better on their own within five to six days. Yet a viral infection can turn into a bacterial infection. When this happens, the red, itchy, painful eyes get worse instead of better, and the condition won’t clear up on its own.

It’s not necessary to keep children with pinkeye home until the eye totally clears up. If the infection is bacterial, the child can go back to school or daycare 24 hours after he or she started using the antibiotic eye drops.

If the infection is viral, children don’t need to stay home, as long as they have clearance from their doctor, they feel well enough, and don’t have other symptoms such as a severe cough, fever, diarrhea or vomiting.

“Pinkeye does not cause blindness or anything that serious, but it can spread to an infection of the skin around the eye or behind the eye,” Dr. Eich said. If it seems like the eyelids are swelling up, call the doctor right away.

If eye drops are prescribed for your child, use them for the recommended time, and then throw the bottle away – don’t save it for the next time pinkeye strikes your household. “If the dropper is touched to the eye, you could end up reinfecting the eye,” Dr. Eich said.

When you hear the word “pinkeye,” don’t panic. “It’s much like the common cold. Both pinkeye and the common cold can be passed among children, but the condition usually goes away on its own, and it’s not serious. Also, like the common cold, the best prevention is good hand hygiene,” Dr. Eich said.

Every year, as we countdown the hours towards our next trip around the sun, we take a great pause and tally our

successes and losses. We make bets with ourself and on ourselves to resolve to make changes in our life for a better next year. Often times we feel rushed or pushed into making a list of our own faults to conquer during this bright and shiny new year. Sometimes our lists are long and our expectations are

rather heavy. So much so, our resolve gets lost in the business of life. This year, instead, we can resolve to simply be awesome.

We can be awesome at living the best we can in that moment. After all, life is made up of many, many minuscule moments that create ripples in the water of life. In these moments we can decide to do simple things that will create a better living environment for ourselves and our loved ones. The best thing is that in these small blocks of time we can declutter, reenergize, and organize our space. Clearing the air of things that hold us down and make room for new experiences to be seen clearly. Most importantly is not bogging ourselves down with unrealistic expectations of time. Time is important, your time is important and how you spend it is even more so. Spending that time on building yourself up instead of checking off what didn’t get accomplished is an excellent use of your time.

Resolve to be the best person you can be to you first. We all know the holidays run us down and we may have indulged in more than cocoa. So taking care of you is number one. Yet we mustn’t get ahead of ourselves and have lofty goals that cannot coexist within the realm of our lifestyles. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Give yourself a break by allowing enough time to make reasonable changes and achieve obtainable goals.

Health and wellbeing is usually what is staring back at us during this month of high hopes. Within these high hopes, we must remember to be kind to ourselves as well. Health is like a

recipe, you cannot make anything without all of the ingredients. Sleeping well, eating well, exercise, less stress and don’t forget living in the joy of every moment, just to name a few. Knowing that right now we can be and are willing to be our best and we are simply a work in progress. There is no reason to stress about things we cannot change overnight and when it comes to health, a natural slow progression is best and easier to maintain. We can choose to be the best version of ourselves every day.

Three years ago I resolved to make life changes not only in my life, but in the lives of my children and husband. Would you believe I am still in constant motion of change? It’s taken a long, long time to get where I am and I am still working on those personal goals. Many of them were directly influenced by health and well being and at first it was rather painful and confusing converting my thoughts. It was even harder convincing my children and especially my husband, but we are continually growing together. They didn’t come off of a list or expectations rendered by others, but from a sunny day under a tree. I, in that moment, chose to celebration all the moments in life, even if they didn’t meet my expectations and to make those moments matter.

It’s not easy or quick, by any means; no matter what you

resolve to change in your life. Change is hard and it takes time, so allow it to. Being awesome takes a lifetime.

Resolve to love yourself more. Resolve to do more of what you love. Resolve to engage in experiences that put butterflies in your belly. Resolve to reach out to old friends and reconnect. Resolve to cut yourself and others some slack. Resolve to smile, laugh, watch your favorite movies and make your favorite family recipes. Resolve to slow down, look around and enjoy the moment you are in, as it will soon be past. Resolve not to resolute anything that you cannot reasonably obtain in a healthy natural way, within the time frame allowed. Resolve to be kind, forgiving, honest and loving to yourself. Then resolve to do the same for others. Remind yourself that the little things do matter and that change and resolutions take time.

Remember that every day is another opportunity to be a better version of the day before, and while you are at it, don’t forget to allow yourself to make mistakes. It is ok to not always be on your A game.

Live in the moment the best way you know how. That is when you are resolving to be your best and when you do your best, you resolve to be awesome. Cheers to you and the new year.

“Health is like a recipe, you cannot make anything without all of the ingredients. Sleeping well, eating well, exercise, less stress and don’t forget

living in the joy of every moment, just to name a few.”

Bird Feeder

Materials:• toilet paper rolls• sturdy sticks - 2 per roll, 6-8 inches long• bird seed• peanut butter• string or ribbon• a hole punch

Punch two holes in one side of the toilet paper roll, aligning them evenly across from each other. This will be used to tie the string for hanging.

Punch four holes into the opposite end of the toilet paper roll, and align them evenly. This is for the sticks that the birds will perch on. Try to put one set a little higher than the other so the sticks can be pushed through easily.

Insert the two sticks into each hole, going in one side and out the other. Wiggle and push sticks in gently without ripping the holes.

Center each stick so they cross and make an intersection, sticking out far enough on each side for the bird to sit.

Next, spread a light layer of peanut butter on the upper part of the toilet paper roll and cover in bird seed. Careful not to cover the holes at the top - as you will now use the string to make a hanger.

Hang so you can watch it out the window, and wait for those hungry birds.

Now that the holiday celebrations and feasts are over, its time to look at the scale. January must be the month to feel

bad about ourselves and our pets. Sure we over ate and had just one more cookie than normal, but we took our dogs for as long of a walk as we could. OK, we might have gotten our pets a big box of treats and gave a few more than normal. January must be the month of the scale.

Our pets share the same problems with being overweight as people. We all live in homes that are warm and require little energy to maintain the warmth compared to outside pets.

There is also an abundance of food in many homes. Easy calories for people and their pets. To top it all off, we live in a very cold place for 3-4 months and who wants to play ball when it is below zero?

Dieting for our pets is about as stressful for them as it is for people. Being deprived of all of the rich, tasty food is not fun. Cutting back is hard, especially when their noses know that there is more in the cupboard to eat. Those big brown eyes can make you feel so guilty.

If your New Year’s resolution is for your pet to lose weight, there are some hard and fast rules that can help you out. Treats are probably the biggest calorie source that pets take in. Many of those small cookies have 30-50 calories in each one. If your dog or cat talks you out of one more treat a day, it adds up very quickly. Instead of the commercial treats, try string beans, apple slices or bananas. Many people use carrots, but they have quite a bit of

sugar in them. The diet you feed your pet is high in carbohydrates. Many of the

diets have grains, potato, sweet potato or beets. Both cats and dogs are carnivores by nature and their metabolism is geared to a high protein, relatively low carbohydrate diet. It does not matter what kind of carbohydrates they take in, it still causes fat to build up.

We all try to limit the volume of food that our pets and we take in when we diet. The hunger that comes from being limited can backfire on our plans for weight loss. It also can cause some behavior changes as your pet tries to find more food. The new metabolic diets for pets are designed with that in mind. Increased protein will satisfy their hunger more effectively.

Exercise is also very important. It can mean more walks, new toys or just getting them moving around more. Make sure you do not start out with a 5 mile hike. It takes time to get into shape and being able to increase their endurance. Cats are difficult to exercise, but use new toys and attempt to play with them more.

It is important to be patient with weight loss. It took a long time to get there and it will take some time to get it off. If it is not working, have your Veterinarian check their thyroid gland level. Low thyroid will cause your pet to be lethargic and slows their metabolism, leading to weight gain.

Good luck on your New Year’s resolutions. Guess it is time for Piper and me to start our new diets! Yeah?

1938 earthquake

78 friends & family | Historical markEr

Since 1872 only one earthquake centered in Minnhaha County has been recorded. A mild quake with an intensity of IV on the Mercalli scale and

a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale affected 5000 square miles in this region at 3:37 a.m. on October 11, 1938. Mercalli’s scale relates to damage resulting from earthquakes while their size is measured by Richter’s scale.

Alarmed residents made more than 50 calls to Sioux Falls police to report houses jarred, dishes and windows rattled, and loose objects swayed by the relatively week tremor. No injuries or deaths resulted.

This earthquake was caused by isostatic rebound. During the Ice Age, glaciers weighing millions of tons compressed the earth’s crust; as they retreated, the crust slowly began to rebound. In October 1938 an adjustment in the crust suddenly released energy, the ground trembled, and vibrations radiated out from the focus.

This site is near the epicenter, the point on the surface of the earth above the focus, which is the point within the earth where energy was abruptly released.

1938 Earthquake

Renner Area, Northern Links Golf Course.

South dakota State GeologistE. P. Rothrock was the state geologist in 1938. He explained the belief of that time, namely that the minor quake was the result of slippage of that part of the Earth’s surface which rested upon the peaks of the ancient “Lost Mountains of Wisconsin!”

The front page headline story of the October 11, 1938, Daily Argus Leader, was the report

of a “baby” earthquake that jarred Sioux Falls in the early morning hours.
