GLG AND cITY HEALTH WORKS NAVIGATE cHANGING POLIcY ENVIRONMENTS In January 2014, a new federal Medicaid rule impacted organizations providing preventive health interventions through community health workers. For the first time, organizations like CHW can bill Medicaid for community

health worker-delivered services provided the community health programs are recommended by a licensed primary care practitioner. CHW came to GLG for help maximizing these opportunities.

CASE STUDY

GlG connected CHW with several experts to determine how this policy shift might affect CHW’s work and how the new programs would be adopted by new York’s medicaid office. CHW spoke with the vice president of a nonprofit health insurance company

in new York, the director of medical economics for one of medicaid’s largest managed care organizations, and the director of Strategic Analytics at a new York hospital. through these conversations and many others, CHW learned how to engage the new York State medicaid office on this groundbreaking federal policy change.

in September 2015, GlG convened a group of doctors, hospital leaders, insurers, federal regulators, think tanks, foundations, and several of CHW’s existing partners to discuss CHW’s future business model, contracting strategies, and pricing models for its service. By bringing these stakeholders into the strategic planning process, CHW validated its approach and set direction for the future.

“I learned a great deal from this impressive group of big thinkers and major on-the-ground players in healthcare. This is the kind of wisdom GLG is uniquely able to tap into and demonstrates the value of GLG to the social sector. I am so grateful for the support and counsel we’ve found through GLG Social Impact.”

GLG AND NURU INTERNATIONAL PLAN FOR SUccESS IN NEW GEOGRAPHIES

CASE STUDY

In June 2015, Nuru completed its operations in Kenya and its expat staff exited the country, leaving local leaders to operate, manage, and preserve the impact of Nuru’s efforts independent of Nuru International staff.

nuru shifted its focus to ethiopia, Africa’s second-most populous nation, which like Kenya has rampant food insecurity and hunger, comparable climates and rainy seasons, and similar agricultural infrastructure. nuru came to GlG for help creating successful partnerships with local agricultural cooperatives to commercialize produce.

GlG recruited a former USAid professional who worked extensively in ethiopian agricultural cooperatives. the expert connected nuru’s team to professionals on the ground and helped demystify complex taxation issues related to nuru’s project.

GlG also helped nuru adapt successful models in Kenya for future expansion into highly fragile states. GlG experts provided insight into strategies for encouraging stability, establishing infrastructure, and creating security mechanisms within vulnerable communities. this insight will be essential to nuru’s success in either democratic republic of Congo, Central African republic, or niger, pending the completion of ongoing site visits and assessments through 2016.
