2014 ANNUAL REPORTYMCA OF MIDDLE TENNESSEE
I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it MORE abundantly. - John 10:10b
Dear Friends,
Since its founding in 1875, our Y has been helping people from all walks of life achieve more in all areas of life—spirit, mind and body. Because we believe that when we work together, more is possible: more health, more confidence, more opportunities. Inspired by Christ’s assurance that He “came that they might have life and have it more abundantly,” we strive every day to give our neighbors the tools and support they need to learn, grow and thrive. In 2014, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee made more possible for 311,385 people—nearly a third of them kids.
At the Y, we’re more than a place. We’re a cause. We may offer heart-pumping workouts, but we do it because we’re a heart-filled nonprofit committed to strengthening our community. We don’t just teach swimming lessons or coach soccer; we build confidence and nurture potential to help kids become secure, connected adults. We’re more than a place to become physically active; we’re a driving force behind a healthy and full life. And we’re more than a gym—we’re where communities come together for the common good. We hope this annual report reflects just a few of the ways we’re joining hands with you—our volunteers, donors, friends and staff—to make more possible.
Our Christian mission and shared commitment to Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility call us to respond to our community’s most pressing needs. Yesterday’s effort to provide wholesome recreation for young men is today’s call to help our kids close a growing achievement gap. What was the advent of sports like basketball and volleyball is today’s battle against obesity and chronic disease. And the support we offered immigrants at the turn of the 20th century is today’s work to engage newcomer communities and tackle the social isolation too many of our neighbors experience.
The ways we live our cause may have changed over the years, but our commitment to nurturing the potential of children and teens, improving health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support neighbors in need is as strong as ever. And we could not do it without you. So to everyone who joined us in 2014, we extend our deepest thanks. Your investment in our kids, our health and our neighbors makes more possible in our community every day.
Thank you for your continued support of our YMCA and the individuals and families we serve.
Blessings,
Dan Dummermuth Bill Lee President & CEO Association Board Chair

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTMAKING LEARNINGAN ADVENTUREFor many adults, childhood memories of summer camp have a magical quality about them. That’s certainly the case for current campers at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, who can now experience even more of the magic through pop-culture-themed weeklong camps that recreate the fantasy worlds of kids’ favorite books and movies.
“I think kids respond when you make it something relative to them,” says Camp Widjiwagan Executive Director Jeff Merhige, who launched the wildly successful camps in summer 2014. “If you can take a traditional game like capture the flag and tie it to a popular theme and give it a twist, it becomes more engaging,” he says.
The “fully-themed” camps—which feature popular franchises from Star Wars to Harry Potter—are more than just a chance for counselors and campers to dress in costumes and play make believe. They’re part of a broader strategy to keep kids’ bodies and minds even more active in the summer, a season often marked by major learning loss in children.
“If we can do programs at camp that encourage reading and encourage kids to learn more,” Merhige says, “it’s a nice bridge to nature and education.”
Fully-themed camps are just one way the Y builds the bridge to summer engagement. Through swim lessons and youth sports to day camp and out-of-school care, the Y provides more than 100,000 youth with the caring support and valuable skills they need to learn, grow and thrive all year long.

HEALTHY LIVINGPARTNERING IN CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTIONEvery day, the presence of the YMCA’s wellness centers in our communities helps more than 270,000 members keep chronic disease at bay. Now, with a program aimed specifically at stemming the tide of diabetes—which affects 1 out of 10 Tennessee adults—the Y is taking our healthy living cause one step further.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program—an evidence-based program made possible through Y-USA, the Wellpoint Foundation and a number of community partners—is a rapidly growing effort to reduce the burden of obesity and diabetes in our region. Working closely with individuals in a supportive, small-group setting, the Y’s life coaches walk alongside participants with a holistic approach that focuses on the spirit, mind and body of each individual—rather than just diet and exercise.
More than 50 individuals have taken part in this life-changing program—94% of whom receive some form of financial assistance that allows them to participate. By relieving this financial burden through partner funding, the Y is able to serve those who need that support the most, helping individuals make the small but significant changes that will forever transform their lives.
With five YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program locations at centers across our region—and ambitions to add four more in the coming year—the Y continues to use its resources, leadership and influence to reverse the diabetes trend in the communities we serve. “They’ve already done the hard work; they’ve already shown that their evidence works,” local physician Dr. John Anderson says of the Y. “That’s where I want to send my patients.”
Improved the physical and social well-being of thousands of participants in nearly 2,000 YMCA weekly group fitness classes taught by 600 instructors throughout Middle Tennessee
Helped improve the health of 272,120 members who belonged to the Y in 2014
Invested $2.2 million in healthy lifestyle promotion programs and services to help at-risk populations improve their overall health and well-being

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYOPENING DOORS TO OUR NEIGHBORS After losing her job, Zina Bauman began to lose hope. What she didn’t lose was the help of her local Y when she needed it most.
Thanks to Open Doors, the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s charitable assistance program, Zina and her mother, Celine Rueff, received enough financial support to allow them to continue as members of the Bellevue Family YMCA. For Zina in particular, it proved to be a priceless gift of health and healing.
While continuing to battle loneliness and depression, Zina made the small decision to attend a group exercise dance class one Saturday morning—and instantly felt that a weight had been lifted. “I just loved it. Something came back that I had lost, with the music and the dancing and being around a bunch of people,” Zina says. “I’ve been coming a couple of times a week ever since.”
Zina says thanks to the positive strides she’s made in her physical health and the support and kindness she’s experienced at the Y, she’s begun to heal from a challenging season in her life. And she’s happy her mother has found a home at the Y, too. “We both fit in here. And we’re both so appreciative of the opportunity. This is a very special place.”
That opportunity would not have been possible for Zina and Celine were it not for the generosity of donors, whose $6.4 million contribution in 2014 allowed more than 93,000 other members to benefit from the Y’s life-changing programs and services. Providing that access through Open Doors remains the single biggest way the Y lives out the cause of strengthening individuals, families and communities each day.
Raised $6.4 million in total charitable support from 9,485 generous donors, allowing the Y to continue investing in our kids, our health and our neighbors
Helped more than 93,000 neighbors in needby providing financial assistance through our Open Doors program to allow deserving families and individuals to become members and participate in the Y’s life-changing programs

OUR IMPACTSOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYAt the YMCA, people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds walk through our doors—a true reflection of our diverse community. It’s our belief that keeping those doors open—by providing access to all—is fundamental to our nonprofit mission and the first step toward impacting the lives of the individuals and families we serve. Responding to those critical social needs—and providing opportunities for neighbors to connect and support each other—is key to the YMCA’s past and essential to its future.
Provided opportunities to give back to 2,702 caring volunteers who devoted 52,008 hours to strengthen their community through the Y

2014 FINANCIAL SUMMARY
2014 was a challenging year for our Y financially. Revenue declined for the second year in a row, falling by just under $1 million versus 2013 on a “same-store” basis (i.e. excluding the centers we closed in 2013). Despite holding expenses in check—lower than 2013 in fact—we were unable to overcome the decline in revenue. As a result, net income from operations on a same-store basis fell by $430,000 in 2014.
Although our facilities are full and usage is at an all-time high, net membership revenue per household continues to decline. Revenue from other categories (contributions, government grants and program revenue) all declined on a same-store basis as well. This lack of revenue growth induced significant belt-tightening for the Association in 2014. Staffing reductions drove savings of more than $700,000 versus 2013 on a same-store basis, and our centralized purchasing efforts continued to bear fruit as supply costs dropped more than $300,000 during 2014. Overall, our operating expenses were $173,000 lower than 2013 on a same-store basis, despite significant increases in utility costs and investments in technology for our major systems. Notwithstanding the same-store revenue challenges, our 2013 decision to contract the organization’s scope has proven to be financially beneficial. Through expense reductions and full-year savings from center closures, the association’s EBIDA (Earnings Before Interest, Depreciation, and Amortization) rose by $3.4 million (73%) in 2014.

Brighter Days Ahead
Our 2015 operating budget calls for $1 million in operating net income, an improvement of $1.75 million on a same-store basis from 2014. When met, this will represent our highest operating surplus since 2007, and our third highest operating surplus of the last 20 years. Our staff and volunteers are focused on returning the YMCA of Middle Tennessee to a position of financial strength and long-term sustainability for our community, and 2015 will represent a significant step toward that goal.

THE ORDER OF THE RED TRIANGLELeilani S. Boulware For 2014, it is the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s distinct privilege to present its highest volunteer honor, the Order of the Red Triangle, to Leilani S. Boulware.
Since 1964, the Order of the Red Triangle has been presented to those who have given generously of their abilities and resources to advance the mission of the YMCA, and Leilani Boulware embodies the spirit of the award.
Boulware first became affiliated with the YMCA of Middle Tennessee in the 1990s as a volunteer, providing counsel to the nonprofit on human resources and other legal issues. Her involvement with the Y deepened when she was invited to join the board of the Joe C. Davis YMCA Outdoor Center (home of YMCA Camp Widjiwagan). She was soon asked to chair the camp board, and during her tenure helped lead the capital campaign that made the dream of establishing an overnight resident camp of the facility a reality.
In 2010, Boulware was named Association Board Chair, serving as the Y’s chief volunteer through 2011.
Throughout almost two decades of volunteer service, Boulware’s commitment to the Y mission has remained steadfast, and her wise
counsel and dynamic leadership continue to encourage the organization to grow and evolve to meet the community’s most pressing needs—evidence of her commitment to the promotion of personal development and community contribution.
An accomplished professional and former partner at H3GM, Boulware currently serves as the Chief Legal Officer/Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Correct Care Solutions, overseeing all legal and risk management operations for the health care company, which has more than 460 facilities in 40 states and Australia.
Boulware received her Doctorate of Jurisprudence with honors from Vanderbilt University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Kentucky University, graduating with honors and a double major in Economics and Accounting.
In addition to serving as a volunteer leader for the YMCA, Boulware also serves on the board of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. She is married to Dwaine Anderson and has three childrenand four grandchildren.

H.G. HILL JR. PHILANTHROPIC AWARDRUTH AND BOB NAPIERIn 2014, the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee presented its highest honor, the H.G. Hill Jr. Philanthropic Award, to longtime supporters and Nashville natives Ruth and Bob Napier.
Bob is a graduate of Battle Ground Academy, and Ruth, a graduate of Harpeth Hall. Although the two knew each other as youngsters through family acquaintances, they put a few miles between them when he left for college at Emory University and she headed to Converse College in South Carolina. The pair reconnected when they both returned to Nashville and were married in 1969.
Not long before they wed, Ruth left her job at the Nashville Banner, where she wrote for the society section. She will neither confirm nor deny, however, whether she was the famous Betty Banner. She went on to work at Montgomery Bell Academy in its development department for 16 years, and has served on a part-time basis in the Y’s development department since 1998.
When Bob returned to Nashville from Atlanta, he embarked upon what turned out to be a 20-year career at National Life, which later became American General. Bob then went on to Commerce Union Bank for 10 years, and actually survived three mergers that changed the name of the bank to Sovran, then NationsBank, and finally Bank of America in that
short decade. After the bank, Bob started his own real estate services company, which he operated for several years. His last career stop was at Nashville Bank & Trust, which, in keeping with the tradition of fine banks, changed its name to Truxton Trust right around the time Bob left in 2012.
While Ruth has served on the staff of the Y for several years, Bob has been involved with the Y on a volunteer basis, serving in a variety of capacities. Although YMCA Foundation Board records may not go back quite as far as Bob does, it is well known that he holds the longevity record for serving as Treasurer of the Foundation for more than 20 years, beginning sometime in the late ‘80s and ending in 2011.
In addition to serving as a trusted advisor for the Foundation, Bob also has a deep love for camp. He served tirelessly on the original Board of the Joe C. Davis YMCA Outdoor Center for more than a decade and was instrumental with the planning and fundraising for the establishment of a day camp program, and then for the resident camp.
In addition to the Y, Bob has served on the board of the Blakeford Retirement Center in Burton Hills and on the board of the Retired Teachers Apartments in Green Hills. Bob and Ruth attend St. George’s Church. They have two children, a son, Bob Jr. and a daughter, Charlotte. Ruth and Bob are also the proud grandparents of four grandchildren.
The Napiers are shining examples of the philanthropic spirit and fine character that the H.G. Hill Jr. Award seeks to recognize. It is the YMCA Foundation of Middle Tennessee’s distinct honor to celebrate the generosity and servant leadership of Ruth and Bob Napier.

David Edwards Downtown YMCA
David Edwards is a great ambassador for our Downtown YMCA. Whether he is leading our volunteer board or recruiting members to participate in our wellness programs, his passion for our YMCA is contagious. Our staff considers David the Pied Piper of our 6 a.m. boot camp, where he can often be seen challenging and embarrassing people half his age during his workouts. We appreciate all that David does to help continue the long legacy of our YMCA here in downtown Nashville. — Kenny Alonzo

She is an exemplary organizer, advocate and connector for her students and their families. There is not a challenge too great for Lynne. Whether she is empowering students to plan for their futures, reserving the library for a club meeting, or collaborating with school administration, Lynne faithfully, fearlessly and energetically shows her love through her service! — Kathleen Fuchs

Sergio Rizo Y-CAP
Sergio is a member of Church of the City, which meets in our chapel at Y-CAP. In December, he reached out to us with an interest in supporting a family in need for Christmas. His entire office joined together to make Christmas one to remember for one of our sixth grade students, Ja’Dazia Terrell, and her family. He invited Ja’Dazia, Eric Alexander and me to his office for a tour and lunch, and Ja’Dazia was like a kid in a candy store walking all around their office and meeting everyone. It was such a transformational experience that she will never forget. Just walking through the doors of the Vanderbilt University Office of Investments changed her entire perspective. While we were there, she said that she could see herself working in that office space, when before, her dream was to get an apartment in the James Cayce housing project. To Ja’Dazia that was “making it,” but thanks to Sergio, her dreams are growing. — Lonnell Matthews
