2 Annual Report 2014

Greetings From The WFMT Interim President Dear WFMT Members, I find that 365 days seems to go faster each year than I anticipate. I vividly remember completing the 2013 WFMT Annual Report and here I am now compiling the 2014 Annual Report. Time does fly. This will be the final annual report that I bring to you as Interim President as I am completing my term. You may recall that in January 2013 I officially stepped into the role of Interim President. Finally, as I am preparing this report, the final preparations are underway for the 14th WFMT World Congress. We will gather soon in Vienna and Krems, Austria. We hope to see you there and we hope you will continue to join the WFMT as we begin a new term. Highlights from June 2013 to June 2014 include:

As the Chair of the Research and Ethics Committee for WFMT, my role is to lead a team focused on assisting and promoting the ethical practice of music therapy, and the ethical research of music therapy, throughout the world. In the past three years the team has worked on five main projects, as follows. • Development of an information document

called, “Ethics and Informed Consent Requirements for Publication of Music Therapy Research.” This was uploaded onto the research and Ethics Commission webpage in 2013 following approval by the WFMT Executive.

In closing… It was a privilege to support Dr. Mary Boyle who was Chair of the Research and Ethics Commission during the previous WFMT term. During this time our Committee commenced writing a series of information and guidance papers related to research and ethics for music therapists throughout the world. It is hoped that further related information and guidance documents will be developed by future WFMT Research and Ethics Commissions, and that the existing research and ethics documents will be regularly updated. As I step away from the Committee after six years of service I wish to acknowledge the important work of all Committee members during the last two terms, especially those who led project initiatives: Dr. Wendy Magee’s description of international music therapy research, and Dr. Eric Miller’s creation of the WFMT research portal. Sadly, Mary Boyle passed away soon after I became Chair of the Research and Ethics Committee in 2012. I first met Mary in 1994 after I presented a piece of research at a conference in England. Mary approached me and offered to help me to get it published – through snail mail correspondence between USA and Australia. Her generous collegial gift will always inspire me. I believe that many would share my gratitude for Mary’s extensive contribution to the music therapy field.

21 Annual Report 2014

Closing Message From The WFMT Interim President

You have read and discovered what the WFMT Council has been hard at work accomplishing throughout the year. One of the monumental and momentous accomplishments this year was the completion of the first WFMT Strategic

Plan. We look forward to introducing you to our ‘road map’ for the future. This plan will provide direction for the WFMT for years to come. I want to thank the Council and the Strategic Planning Work Group for their commitment and tireless work on this major task. As a result of this work, the WFMT is positioned for growth, new developments and collaborations. We certainly look forward to gathering with a thousand music therapists from around the world in Austria in July. The world congress is the premier event of the World Federation of Music Therapy. We take great joy and pride in being able to bring together such a vibrant and dynamic event. We hope you will continue to partner with us in this work. We look forward to your ongoing support, communication and feedback in order to be the international organization that our profession needs. While we have officers, commissioners, and regional liaisons in all the regions of the world, we need each of you (our members) to fully meet the mission and vision of our organization. We can stand together and continue to build and grow our profession. With gratitude, Annie Heiderscheit, Ph,D., MT-BC, LMFT Fellow, Association of Music and Imagery
