The 2014 Toyota Yaris is a perfectly competent subcompact car, although it has no features that stand out above its competitors in the increasingly competitive subcompact market. It's a somewhat generic subcompact hatchback with the unusual feature of a three-door version as well as the more customary five-door model; there is no longer a Yaris sedan offered in the U.S.

Toyota has a number of other small-car entries, from the Scion iQ and xD models to the subcompact hybrid Prius C. The smallest Prius, in fact, starts just below $20,000 and offers a 50-mpg fuel efficiency rating, in contrast to the Yaris' not-very-impressive 32- and 33-mpg combined figures. Part of that can be chalked up to its 106-horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The five-speed manual gearbox moves the car around town fine if you keep engine speeds up, but the outmoded four-speed automatic is slow, noisy, and strains at highway speeds, more like economy cars of 10 years ago. The Yaris forgoes more modern technologies that include direct injection, turbocharging, and six-speed or continuously-variable transmissions.

From the outside, the Yaris appears brawny without being a caricature (as some Scion models seem to be). The broad front airdam, blunt nose, and distinct wheel openings give it a solid appearance, with the interior being straightforward but unremarkable. Storage space inside is good, and the front seats are comfortable and supportive, with plenty of room. Rear seats are a different story; they're smaller than those in many competitors, particularly the Nissan Versa Note, and the Yaris is more usable for two adults than for four. Neither cargo space nor flexibility are as good as the perennial class leader, the Honda Fit.
