Welcome to the 78th Annual FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade!

This year marks the 10th year that FirstLight Federal Credit Union serves as the Sun Bowl Thanksgiving parade’s title sponsor and we couldn’t be more grateful for their partnership and dedication. We look forward to many more years together.

The FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade is an institution in my hometown of El Paso. As a small child, I remember attending the parade with my family every year and I always looked forward to it. This year is no different.

As always, we had tremendous response from local businesses and groups to participate in today’s parade. We are delighted in featuring dazzling floats, award-winning marching bands, and equestrian teams, along with many other talented groups. We work hard to continue to make this one of the premier Thanksgiving parades in the country.

None of this would be possible without the dozens of volunteers who give their time to prepare such a special memory for all of us. They dedicate many hours each week beginning in the summer to ensure that the people of El Paso have their parade every Thanksgiving. The Sun Bowl is dependent on its many great volunteers, and the parade volunteers are some of the best.

In the spirit of the season “Thank you” to FirstLight Federal Credit Union and to the citizens of our wonderful city for your continued support of our parade.

Enjoy the parade and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Barry Kobren2014 PresidentSun Bowl Association

Following his recent induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, El Pasoan Nolan Richardson returns to the Sun City to lead the 78th edition of the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade as grand marshal.

“It’s an honor to have Nolan Richardson as the grand marshal for the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade,” said Karl Murphy, President and CEO of FirstLight Federal Union. “He was born in El Paso and played for Don Haskins. Furthermore, being inducted into the hall of fame for winning a championship at every level shows his amazing talent as a coach and mentor. It’s a pleasure to have him come back to El Paso.”

Born and raised in El Paso, Richardson attended Texas Western College (now the University of Texas at El Paso) where he played two years under fellow hall of famer Don Haskins.

He began his coaching career at Bowie High School before moving to the collegiate ranks to Western Texas College winning the National Junior College championship in 1980. He was the head coach at Tulsa from 1981 to 1985, leading Tulsa to the NIT championship in 1981.

In 1985, Richardson was named head coach at the University of Arkansas. He led the Razorbacks to the NCAA Final Four three times and claiming the national title in 1994. For that he was named the 1994 National Coach of the Year.

“Nolan Richardson is a true El Paso success story,” said Barry Kobren, President of the Sun Bowl Association. “The Sun Bowl is honored to have him as the grand marshal for this year’s First Light Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade.

“Coach Richardson grew up in the Segundo Barrio and became one of the best athletes the City of El Paso has ever produced,” added Kobren. “Throughout the years he has always remembered his hometown having returned here frequently to help the community. El Paso and the Sun Bowl are proud of Coach Richardson’s accomplishments and we are pleased that he will be here Thanksgiving to participate in one of the city’s greatest traditions.”

His teams typically played an up tempo game with intense pressure defense – a style that was known as “40 Minutes of Hell.” He is the winningest coach in Arkansas history, compiling a 389-169 record in 17 seasons. Coach Richardson is the only head coach to win a Junior College National Championship, the NIT, and the NCAA Tournament.

“I have a feeling of such huge, tremendous pride-that the generosity of the Sun Bowl organization has selected me as their grand marshal of this very historic parade,” said Richardson. “I am overwhelmed with excitement and I look forward to being part of one of the greatest events in El Paso.”

Richardson served as head coach of the Panamanian National Team from 2005 to 2007. He was selected as the head coach for the Mexican National Team in 2007. In 2009 Coach Richardson assumed the head coaching position for the WNBA Tulsa Shock.

From its humble beginnings, the parade has become an unprecedented display of color, excitement and pageantry like none other in the region.

New Year’s Day 1936, was the date when it all began; people from El Paso lined the streets to enjoy all of the colorful floats, bands and specialty units that comprised the original Sun Carnival Parade.

Throughout Montana Avenue hundreds of families witness the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade, which enhances a rich tradition that is dear to the hearts of many individuals in the community and surrounding areas.

In order to attract more visitors into the Sun City, members of the Downtown Lions Club of El Paso got together in 1935 to organize and plan a parade which could be added to the Sun Bowl events already in place - the Sun Bowl football game and the coronation. But what they never imagined is that this parade became a yearly celebration full of splendid traditions and majestic stories to come.

For the first seven years of its existence the parade was realized year after year, but World War II forced the organizers to cancel the parade from 1943-46. However, it was not until 1947 that the parade was back on track.

At the early beginnings of the parade, this celebration was shared with the Sun Bowl football game during New Year’s Day, being no longer the case since 1958, when the football game was moved to New Year’s Eve.

It was not until 1978, that parade organizers decided to switch the date for this celebration, from New Year’s Day to Thanksgiving Day. The main purpose was gaining national television exposure. The El Pasoan business community truthfully supported the change, because the day after Thanksgiving is considered as the nation’s largest shopping date. Ever since, the Thanksgiving parade has become a traditional event.
