An estimated 3 million Americans have glau-

coma, and half of them don’t know it. It is often called the “silent thief of sight” because it is not noticed by the pa-tient until it reaches a more advanced stage.

The most common form of glau-coma, primary open angle glau-coma, results in a slow degener-ation of the optic nerve causing peripheral vision loss initially and progresses centrally.

The most common cause is high eye pressure, but this is not the only cause. Some people have progressive nerve damage with a normal eye pressure.

Glaucoma cannot be detected by measuring eye pressure alone, but is detected by a full eye exam. While there is no cure for glaucoma, nerve degenera-

tion and vision loss can often be slowed or stopped by treatment. Treatment consists of medica-tions, lasers, and surgery.

Dr Kent Bashford, glaucoma specialist from the Eye Center of Northern Colorado, said “Glau-coma is a deliberate condition that requires diligence in mon-itoring and treatment. Most of my patients take eye drops everyday and must be seen 3-4 times a year, but with contin-uous treatment, most people retain their sight.”

Dr. Bashford is a principle investigator in research trials regarding glaucoma treatment. He said, “There are many new medical and surgical treatments

for glaucoma being tested today. Worldwide, we are searching for safer, less invasive options and are on the cusp of a revolution in how glaucoma is treated.”
