“100% MADE IN ITALY HISTORY FULL OF TRADITION.”
SMP FOUNDED
Two champions such as Coppi and Bartali
battle it out on the roads. In a loft in
downtown Padua, Martino Schiavon began
the fully Italian history of Selle SMP, a
history full of tenacity, spirit of initiative,
courage and the drive to succeed,
bolstered by his own strength.
INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION
In 1981, production moved to its
current location in Casalserugo, 10 km
from Padua.
In 1995, production reached 5 million
saddles a year and the internal
research and development laboratory
was constructed in the same year.
1947 1981 2000
THE ANSWER TO DELOCALISATION
The Schiavon family, convinced that locally
produced fabric should not be deprived of the
experience and construction capacity gained
through years of work and sacrifice, maintains
production and employment in the Veneto region,
selecting to compete on the innovation and
quality level.
In the year 2000 it became the first manufacturer
in the sector to work with a certified quality
system.

100% MADE IN ITALY
Today, Selle SMP is the world leader
in the ergonomic saddle sector
and sells its products in over 50
countries.
Over 65 years have gone by, but
each single saddle is still fully made
in the Veneto region. SMP is the only
manufacturer in the world with an
ISO9001 certified Quality System for:
"The design and production of 100%
Made in Italy bicycle saddles".
FOUR REVOLUTIONARY PATENTS
Following long and in-depth anthropic
and ergonomic studies conducted in
association with a medical equip, four
international patents were deposited:
the central channel, the "eagle beak"
tip, the frame and the rear depression.
Pro was conceived based on these
patents, the first creation in a series
destined to become an icon of a
different and fully innovative bicycle
saddle concept.
THANKS MARTINO
On July 22, 2006, 60 years after that day in
1947 when he started the business, we lost
Martino. Over the years, his sons Franco
and Maurizio took over the "helm" but
Martino remained President and showed up
to work daily until his dying day.
PRODUCT DESIGN AWARD
As soon as it hit the market, the Pro saddle
won the prestigious International Forum
Design Hannover award.

Bicycling stresses the human body more than you think and can generate consequences that should be looked into. SMP's medical research
has reviewed sixty two international scientific publications which revealed that cyclists suffer many common problems and pathologies in
various parts of their bodies:
PERINEAL ZONE
TINGLING
due to the reduction in blood flow
due to prolonged local circulator duct
compression.
CHRONIC PAIN
found in between 50 and 91% of the
cyclists considered; it is associated
with genital-perinea desensitisation
and consequent moderate to severe
erective dysfunction in 13/24% of
cases.
LESIONS
constant and prolonged contact
between the saddle and perineal
region can cause different types
of lesions including callosity,
ulcerations, skin irritations or
furuncolosis with follicultis.
The most typical perineal nodular
lesion is the ‘biker’s nodule’ or the
‘third testicle’. Usually this nodule
looks like an elastic-callous a few
centimetres long, covered with skin.
Surgical removal is normally indicated
as primary therapy.
BLADDER AND KIDNEYS
HAEMATURIA
this consists of blood in the urine.
haematuria from exertion or traumatic
origin, due to repeated micro-traumas
to the bladder and kidneys, is directly
proportionate to the duration of physical
activity.
PENIS
PRIAPISM
due to a more copious and abnormal
blood flow into the corpora cavernosa of
the penis and consists of lasting painful
erection. It is consequent to vascular
trauma with the formation of arterial-
venous fistula.
TESTICLES
PSA SERUM VALUES
after cycling, probably caused by
compression of the saddle on the
perineum region and thus also on the
prosthetic gland. Cyclists with prostate
cancer and those with PSA serum levels
over the norm, especially over the age
50, should be warned of this possible
effect.

CYCLISTS, BIKE RIDERS and TOURERS,
MEN and WOMEN
have blood circulation problems! 70% INFERTILITY
prolonged physical activity causes an increase in
scrotal temperature which damages sperm generation
and changes the hormonal axis of the hypothalamus-
hypophysis-testicular axis.
TESTICULAR TUMOUR
significant increase in the risk of testicular seminoma in
cyclists probably connected with repeated and frequent
scrotal traumas; other researchers, on the other hand,
concerning this same question, prefer to emphasize how
physical activity is a protective factor with regards to
neoplasias and this, to a certain extent, balances out the
greater incidence of neoplasm in cyclists.
TORSION OF THE SPERMATIC CORD
association of this event with cycling is still controversial
and debated; the cause of torsion may be tied to
an endo–scrotal movement of the testicles when
pedalling, accompanied by a vigorous contraction of the
cremasters.
5. FEMALE BODY
In the female body, from the anatomic standpoint, the
neuro-vascular structures compressed by the saddle are
the same as those in the male body. Thus even women
suffer from problems and dysfunctions tied to cycling.
The main and most frequent ones are anorgasmia,
ulcerations and lymphoedema of the vulvae lips, urination
difficulties, chronic perineal pain and haematuria.
Measurement of the pressure exerted in the intestinal region through the
penile trans-epidermal oxygen pressure (PtcO2 in mm/Hg) on an SMP
saddle and on a saddle popular with professional cyclists.
CONCLUSIONS
Compression of the perineum area causes crushing of neuro-vascular
structures with possible consequences on erective physiology.
Bicycle saddle geometry can be a determinant factor in reducing
compression and, thus, is an important parameter to be considered when
evaluated when choosing a saddle.
The obtained results demonstrate that SMP saddles guarantee higher
penis blood flow and are now the best solution on the market for the
highest performance with the greatest health benefits.

TEST POINT
1. HARD OR PADDEDACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF USE
Riding on a flat, well-paved road requires the cyclist to constantly sit on the
saddle and thus more compression stress. On the other hand, riding a mtb on
winding, rough terrain, characterised by frequent jerks and technical slopes
causes shocks, even violent, with less constant sitting.
For these reasons, Selle SMP recommends more padded saddles for off-road
(i.e. dirt bike, cross country, free ride, downhill, all mountain, etc.) and for all
those specialties that include jumps (street, urban, trial, etc.).
According to our experts, the use of an SMP saddle with padding, however light,
is always recommended.
SMP padded saddles are, on average, more comfortable and better absorb the
rough terrain, more effectively protecting the cyclist from the risk of micro-
traumas caused by the terrain and pavement, both off and on road.
10 - SMP PRO 2014
HOW TO CHOOSE A SADDLE
2. PHYSICAL-SKELETAL BUILDPANTS SIZE
The most influential factor in choosing a saddle
is the physical-skeletal build of the pelvis bone
and inherent muscles which, like any other
physical feature, is unique and specific to each
individual (not even twins are 100% identical).
The ischium is the pelvis bone which, along
with the ileum and pubis, which make up the
iliac bone. The lower-rear part of the iliac bone
is characterised by an ischial tuberosities (1)
which, in the normal sitting position, along with
the high branch of the ischium (2), acts as a
support for the body.
Anthropic statistical studies have allowed
for pelvis width "categories" to be identified
in which the morphological variability of the
various structures, although with due care and
exemptions, is rather limited.
In 75% of cases, pants size, and thus pelvis
width, is associated with the width of the ischial
tuberosities gap.
The best saddle series can thus be found based
on size.

SMP PRO 2014 - 11
Given our unique individual physical builds,
nothing can replace the road test which is the
last and key step before buying your SMP saddle.
The feelings the cyclist has in direct contact with
the saddle are usually the determinant factor in
identifying one's model.
In order for the road test to be reliable, you must
try the saddle twice with the due adjustments,
carefully following the instructions provided in
the booklet enclosed with the saddle. Handlebar
distance and saddle tilt adjustments are
especially important.
Visit your nearest Test Point for better assistance.
4. ROAD TESTTEST POINT
There is no correspondence
between the size table and the
ischial tuberosities build in 25% of
the population. In fact, you may
not have a very wide pelvis, around
size 46-48 IT, but a relatively long
tuberosities and thus the saddle
normally suited for your size is too
narrow; or the opposite may occur:
a very tall athlete with size 52-54
IT has a short tuberosities, thus
needing a narrow saddle. These
situations must be evaluated case
by case and only the help of the
cyclist's direct experience lets Selle
SMP recommend the best solution.
3. MODEL CHOICE
Other very important aspects, in addition to
those previously considered, directly effect
saddle comfort: the cyclist's weight, the riding
position and typical pedal frequency.
Once the technology is selected based on
the type of use and habits and the available
models identified according to pants size, the
model is selected according to weight, design
and level of desired comfort. The following
pages indicate, for example, the various levels
of padding for the various saddle types.
