Mild weather helped make this year’s fair a major success

Milder than usual weather and a variety of events and attrac-tions helped make the Newton County Pun’kin Vine Fair a success once again.

“It was a long week and we didn’t have a full crew, but all-in-all it was a very good fair,” said Fair Board President Rick Daw-son. “I believe overall attendance was a little up this year and from what I have heard, mostly everyone had a great time. The weath-

er has never been that cool for fair week since I have been on the board, and I’m sure that helped with attendance. I have heard nothing but positive feedback.”

While there was some rain early in the week, most of the events went on with-out a hitch.

“We had our hands full Monday with the rain but we were able to get the Little Miss and Mister contest and queen pageant on with no major problems,” added Dawson. “The tractor and truck pull

was new and I feel they were a success. The Josh Turner was not a sell out but we estimated around 2,800 people in at-tendance. He put on a good show and the people really enjoyed it. We also had one of our best crowds for the rodeo this year.”

“Without the help from the fair board and our sponsors, the fair wouldn’t be a success that it is each year,” said Dawson. “Everyone involved did an amazing job and it is all appreci-ated.”

Josh Turner was a hit as featured performer at the fair

The Newton County Fair Board of Directors, with the assistance of Fair Oaks Farms, once again brought quality entertainment to the Newton County Fair. Josh Turner’s Roughstock and Rambler Tour presented by Ariat took the stage in front of the grandstand July 15. One of country music’s most recognizable hit-makers earning numerous CMA, ACM and GRAMMY nominations since the release of his debut album, Long Black Train, Turner has sold more than five million albums and garnered four No. 1 hits. Newton County Fair love connectionBy Gregory Myers

[email protected]

Meeting your husband at your lo-cal county fair is a story you can tell your children and your grandchildren. But when you and your two twin sis-ters meet a group of three best friends and eight years later the three couples are now married well that’s a special story.

That’s exactly what happened to six Newton County resi-dents the summer of 2005.

The Brownfield triplets of Morocco, Michelle, Nicole and Victoria were show-ing pigs at the New-ton County Pun’kin Vine Fair with their family. To keep track of the girls and one another, the triplets were given walkie-talkies. It just so happened that best friends Chris

Clifton, Scott Bailey and Nick Cripe, who were active in 4-H, also had walkie-talk-ies and were on the same frequency at the fair as the girls.

“Through the walkie-talkies we started talking and we all met up,” said Michelle. “We con-tinued to talk after that and we all have been together ever since.”

In June 2013, Nick and Nicole became Mr. and Mrs. Cripe. On October 19, 2013 Michelle and Chris were married and this past May, Scott and Victoria tied the knot.

“It is pretty unique,” laughed Michelle. “The fact that all three couples are now married to the same guys we all met at the fair that summer is amazing.”

Because of the love connection that started in 2005, the

Newton County fair will always be fond to the couples.

“The Pun’kin Vine Fair will always share a special place in my heart and I think the others feel the same way too,” added Michelle. “We all try to make it to the fair once a year and meet up. The fair definitely has a small town feel to it and we love that about it.”

Chris and Michelle and Scott and Vic-toria now live in the Lafayette area and Nick and Nicole, who are expecting a baby girl, live in Washington, Indiana.

“Us sisters are very close and it really helped that Chris, Scott and Nick were such good friends,” said Michelle. “We will always remember the summer of 2005 and the Newton County fair.”
