Ho'oponopono: Housekeeping for the SoulBy Joe Vitale

I have been contemplating the virtues of a vegan diet for years. Several years ago, I practiced a vegetarian diet for about 18 months, but did not give up my eggs, half & half in my tea, or fish. I won’t lie. Even

being a Pesco, Lacto, or Ovo vegetarian was difficult. It was harder dining out, eating at friend’s and family’s homes as well as shopping and cooking for five family members who were not vegetarians. Unrelenting comments from non-vegetarians were just that, unrelenting. However, the worst battle was the one within me. When I smelled my favorite meats being cooked, my body had an automatic reaction – salivation.

Despite my convictions, my body was designed to eat meat coming from thousands of years of evolution and it wanted it. But was it evolution?

On what turned out to be the last day of my vegetarian diet, I was taking a week-long course and felt particu-larly tired. I mentioned my fatigue to a colleague who knew I was a vegetarian. She boldly said, “You need to eat meat and get grounded”.

We went to dinner that night, I ordered a steak and promised myself I would return to my normal diet the following day. When the steak was served, I felt like I had not eaten in years. It filled my mouth and stomach in such a satisfying way that I was unable to continue to avoid animal products since the fall of 2007.

I have been distressed since then as I have tried to un-derstand how to proceed with my moral, ethical, eco-

nomic, and ecological arguments while my body is my biggest contender for the counter argument.

Listening to the arguments of meat eaters and non-meat eaters can make your head swim. Is a carnivore diet better because of our evolution or is it just a matter of convenience, taste, and habit?

There are many myths and misconceptions about what it means to be vegan. The veganism philosophy can ex-tend beyond the palate ("I won't eat anything that has a bladder or a mother") to not wearing animal products (leather, suede, fur, wool, silk, feathers), and avoiding products with animal ingredients or testing ("cruelty-free" labels). Following is the truest definition:

“A vegan tries to live without exploiting animals, for the benefit of animals, people, and the planet. Vegans eat a plant-based diet, with nothing coming from animals - no meat, milk, eggs or honey, for example. A vegan lifestyle also avoids leather, wool, silk, and other animal products for clothing or any other purpose.”

The keys words for me are that veganism supports the benefit of “Animals, People, and the Planet.” These words describe the lack of the ethical, health, and eco-logical aspects of being a meat eater.

Although my Internet searches on the subject yielded results on both sides of the, shall we say carnivore di-ets as compared to vegan diets, I did notice one thing regarding arguments of the carnivores. They presented evidence for heath side of it, but were quiet regarding

Page 6: 2014 March/April Radiance

6 Radiance March/April 2014

the ethical and ecological arguments. Even more one-sided were the arguments presented for a meat-based diet which were easily refuted by vegans, but yet, the reasons the vegans argued for a plant-based diet went unanswered by the carnivores.

Before I share both sides of the debate I gathered, allow me to share my conclusions. I am convinced as a world population we must embrace the transitional change toward veganism.

It won't be easy. Changing my cravings for meat will take time and effort to overcome. It’s like trying to quit smoking or any bad habit that gives us pleasure. Am I comparing eating meat to smoking? Yes. I enjoyed smoking for years before I quit.

The most consistent arguments for the non-vegan eat-ing plan are nutrition-based. The non-vegan arguments do not address the moral, ethical, economical, or eco-logical effect, but stick to the nutrition-based one cover-ing the following areas:

An animal-based diet plan helps people get nutrient rich foods from all good food groups.

Animal protein is a quality protein that provides all of the essential amino acids in a low calorie package.

Dairy products easily provide calcium and are often fortified with Vitamin D for maximum absorption and bone production.

Vitamin D found in fish and dairy helps keep heart disease and blood pressure down.

Vitamin B12, necessary for red blood cell production and a healthy nervous system, is only found in ani-mal products.

Animal protein provides Heme-iron, a form of iron efficiently absorbed by the body which is necessary for red blood cell production which delivers oxygen to the body.

Omega-3 fatty acids are primarily found in fish; es-pecially salmon which is necessary for good circula-tion, energy, skin, nail, and hair health.

Yes, all food groups that include meat do provide the nutrition we need. Vegans do not argue that the meat-based diet is lacking in nutrition. However, since 1991 the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) has recommended a no-cholesterol, low-fat vegan diet based on what they call the Four New Food Groups: fruit, legumes, grains, and vegetables.

Vegans and those who avoid animal products (even part of the time) often have low rates of obesity, and

on average weigh up to 20 percent less than meat eat-ers. Vegetarian diets are linked to lower BMIs, reduced risk of Type II diabetes and less cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, eating more fruits and vegetables lower rates of certain cancers, especially colon cancer.

Meat protein provides the complete strain of the essen-tial amino acids we need, so often it is not in a low calo-rie or low fat option.

Plants do not provide this, but each plant provides some them. A diverse diet including many plants will provide the complete essential amino acids we need. To make it easier, vegan protein shakes are available that combine plant-based foods that provide all amino acids.

There are many foods that provide a calcium-rich diet so we can avoid milk and dairy, such at hazelnuts, al-monds, fortified soy, cabbage, broccoli, etc. For Vitamin D, twenty minutes of sunshine will provide our daily dose. If this is not an option, supplements are available.

Vitamin B12 does not come from meat; it comes from microorganisms found in meat. It is found in soil rich in manure and shows up in vegan diets when hygiene was lower and vegetables were not washed. Vegans can take supplements, eat soy, or cereals fortified with it.

Although there has been a slight increase of iron defi-ciency in vegetarians, meat eaters also show a short-age. Iron supplements are not recommended without a blood test as excess iron is not healthy. Natural iron for vegans is black-strap molasses, lentils, tofu, quinoa, kidney beans, and chickpeas

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) an Omega-3 fatty acid is found in leafy green vegetables and nuts, and in veg-etable oils, such as canola and flaxseed oil.

If you’re thinking of becoming a vegan, following are some impressive statistics you should know not only for your health, but also to answers the questions from well-intentioned loved ones and friends.

Most of us have made resolutions to lose weight, eat better, get healthier, and to do more to make the world a better place. We can accomplish these and more by switching to a vegan diet.

Vegans are, on average, 20 pounds lighter than carni-vores due to lower calories, lower fats, and lower satu-rated fats. Unlike unhealthy fad diets, vegans have more energy and usually keep the weight off for a life time.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, vegans are less likely to develop heart disease, cancer, diabetes, or high blood pressure than carnivores. They get the nutrients they need, such as plant protein, fiber, and minerals without cholesterol and saturated fats.

Meats and dairy products are often contaminated with feces, blood, and other bodily fluids which make ani-mal products the top source of food poisoning in the U.S. Cholesterol and saturated fats spread to other vital body organs, not just the heart which can result in fa-tigue, low sex drive, and low energy.

There are two more compelling reasons to adopt a veg-an diet which the vegans argue and carnivores do not address: the ethical and the environmental factors.

World population continues to grow. Even though birth rates are down, so is infant mortality and early death. To continue to sustain the 7 billion people on this earth with food and not destroy natural resources for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren, we must find more sustainable ways to feed ourselves.

Consuming meat is one of the worst things we can do for the Earth. It is wasteful and causes enormous amounts of pollution. The meat industry is also one of the biggest causes of climate change.

Adopting a vegan diet is more effective than switch-ing to a greener car in the fight against climate change. Forty percent of the ocean fish caught is fed to live-stock – pigs and chickens are becoming major aquatic predators. The livestock industry is one of the great-est contributors to greenhouse gas emissions ever. We must promote veganism for health and animal-rights reasons as well as environmental conservation reasons.

It takes tons of crops and water to raise farmed animals. It takes up to 13 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of animal flesh. That plant food could be used more efficiently if it were fed directly to people. The more people go vegan, the better able we’ll be able to feed the hungry.

You may wonder if we should we also avoid animal products for reasons of ethics or health?

Dietary vegans avoid consuming any animal products,

but may use them in clothing and toiletries. Ethical veg-ans see veganism as a philosophy rejecting the com-moditization of animals and will not use them for food, clothing, entertainment, or any other purpose. The Brit-ish Vegan Society only certifies a product if it is free of animal involvement as far as possible and practical, in-cluding animal testing. The ethical vegan sees the objec-tifying of animals as resources for human consumption, converting sentient creatures into units of production, thereby consigning them to brief lives of neglect, abuse, and captivity to increase profits of commercial farmers.

I have watched films showing the cruelty of animals in industrialized farms and acknowledge what is called the Degree of Absence which strategically intends to help us forget when we buy a package of steak in the store we are eating an animal with a face, a life, and emotions that feels pain and fear.

The health reasons are clear. Arguments presented by carnivores were successfully and scientifically answered by some of the most prestigious, peer-reviewed doc-tors and scientists. The carnivores had no counter argu-ments to all of the health benefits also presented by the same groups of medical professionals.

The environmental and ethical reasons are clear. And yet, I still feel a part of me resisting. I understand if you have resistance, too. I am in my early fifties and don’t want to give up what has been a source of joy and de-light to my taste buds my whole life.

The truth is the meat our ancestors ate, the type, qual-ity, and quantity is not the same as it is now. Our popu-lation and environment is different, too. For our health and our world, we must make a change. If I can quit smoking, give up diet cokes, and decrease my shopping habits, I can give up meat. Some of our greatest philoso-phers thought so, too.

What did Great Philosophers Think AboutBeing Vegan?

“Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”

~ Albert Einstein

“The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men.”

~ Leonardo da Vinci

“I have no doubt that it is a part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals.”

~ Henry David Thoreau

“A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite.”

~ Leo Tolstoy

“I do feel that spiritual progress does demand, at some stage, that we should cease to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants.”

~ Mahatma Gandhi

Spirituality is personal. We yearn to know why we are here and how we arrived in this beautiful, trying, and sometimes tragic environment. However, unless you are an exceptional

researcher, most of us will never learn as much as is available about our spirituality. We are products of our environment. How many are willing or able, to pursue that yearning for spiritual knowledge to where they approach an understanding of our place in the universe?

Many terminate their spiritual progress at a place that is comfortable. I have observed that comfortable means something different to each of us. Most people do not have the time to pursue their quest for spiritual knowl-edge so they settle into a spiritual life that is comfort-able because it meets their need although some feel there is more to learn.

I wondered for years why older people seem to find God late in life. I used to think it was because they were try-ing to cover their bases before they died. I now know it is only in the serenity and freedom that comes with age that they have time to resume their quest for the truth.

Unfortunately, most people do not have the blessing of being introduced to the miracle of meditation early in life. Had these people been taught the gift of medita-tion, they could have created the serenity that I and my family have every day. How fortunate I am to live the remainder of my life in peace and harmony. I forever will be grateful to that blessed man who thought enough of me to introduce me to meditation. He must have sensed I had spent my life joining various religions in search of

The Quest By Arthur Faram

the truth. I had no idea that where I was searching was the reason I was not progressing.

Through research I have learned it was meditation that Jesus taught his people as the means to communicate with his heavenly father as did most religious scholars that existed before Jesus. It has been man’s link to the immortal since ancient times. I believe meditation is the only earthly method for achieving total peace. How wonderful it would be if everyone could enjoy this peace, free from hedonism, and worldly vices. Ideally, this would allow the entire world to live in peace, as was described by Plato during the Golden Age of civilization.

Organized religion is man’s creation, not God’s. Is there a religion that can exist without politics and the need for income from its parishioners? If that organized religion exists, it has remained hidden from me. It is the makeup of organized religion which prevents them from divulg-ing the truth about our relationship with God. If they developed their parishioners to the point of true en-lightenment, there would be no need for the organized religion. Therefore, their parishioners are doomed to remain trapped in an environment from which, unless they are strong, they will never escape. Many religions do not know they are not teaching the ultimate method to communicate with God, but some do.

Proselytization and conversion of a church-going indi-vidual, to another organized religion, is difficult. You are taking them out of their comfort zone and, since Protes-tantism is nothing more than a product of Catholicism,

there is nothing to be gained by converting. If people are shown they have the power within them to commu-nicate with God without a mediator, the prospects of showing them the way is dramatically increased. No lon-ger do they have to chase solutions to their problems; the solutions begin to appear.

Organized religion has taught us that prayer is the solu-tion to our problems. Although prayer has been proved, to be a powerful tool, it still entraps the human mind in an earthly bond. It is through meditation that the con-scious is released into the cosmos to affect our lives and bring us blessings we only subconsciously contemplate.

Meditation and the Teachings oftheAncientsToday people are returning to the practice of looking for God within their own souls through meditation rath-er than allowing theological intermediaries to do it. A similar time was mentioned in the book of Ezekiel which tells of God’s disgust for persons filling the souls of his children with lies in order to benefit themselves.

Ezekiel, Chapter 13, verses 18-23:

18 - And thus saith my Master, God, Alas, for the women who sew-oracle-cases on all elbows, and prepare wraps upon the head of every stature to hunt souls, the souls ye hunt are those of My people, whereas your own souls ye keep alive.19 - Thus have you profaned Me unto My people for hand-fuls of barley and for pieces of bread, putting to death the souls that should not die and, and keeping alive the souls that should not live, by your lying to My people who hear-ken to lies.20 - Therefore, thus saith my Master, God, Behold Me! against your oracle-cases wherewith ye are hunting the souls to make them fly, and I will tear them off your arms, and let go the souls of those of them whose souls ye are hunting as birds;21 - And will tear off your wraps, and deliver My people out of your hand, and they shall be no longer in your hand to be hunted; so shall ye know that I am God.22 - Because of the paining of the heart of the righteous man with falsehood, whom I have not pained, and strength-ening the hands of the lawless man that he should not turn from his wicked way, by letting him live.23 - Therefore, of falsehood shall ye have no vision, and a divination shall ye not divine anymore, so will I deliver My people out of your hand, and ye shall know that I am God.As most of us have been taught; God is omnipresent,

omnipotent, and invisible. The Monks of India have had a direct relationship with God for millennia. They are the keepers of the ancient religious practices handed down from God ions ago. When organized religion was formed by the Romans, the truth in the Celtic and Krish-na philosophies was recognized and became the basis in the formation of Christianity. However, important philosophies were omitted in order to keep control of the congregation. The true reason Constantine started this religion was because his soldiers were secretly con-verting to the teachings of Jesus, taught by the follow-ers of Jesus called the Nazarenes. They taught that each person had a body and a soul and through the soul we have direct contact with God through meditation. This part of the ancient philosophies was discarded by Chris-tian religions for fear of losing control of their members. Meditation was morphed into prayer, an earthly cre-ation which gives some relief, but does not provide the spiritual freedom provided by meditation. Therefore, organized religion keeps individuals forever trapped in a worldly dependence on the church.

The problem with this is the body and the soul operate on two different principles. The body learns and com-municates through its senses, is a physical being, and can only exist within the realm of information experi-enced since birth. The soul, created by God, is a spiritual entity which is omnipotent and loving. We have been told, "We are created in God's image.” This reality has been distorted to mean our physical body, while it is our soul which is like God and will return to its previous state upon death.

As we grow older, our physical body becomes subject-ed, through its physical senses, to the viewpoints, some-times misconceptions, and outright lies, which form our mental image of the world. All this time our soul is quiet-ly occupying our body with the remembrance of its pre-vious lives and recording our current life. But remem-ber, the soul is omnipotent and full of love. We have the ability, through meditation, to connect the beauty and

power of the soul to our consciousness and bring it into play. That is its purpose. We leave the physical world and enter spiritual communication with our Creator.

Normally the infinite knowledge and love contained in our soul and our physical body's limitations are not con-nected. However, through meditation they can be. That is why we can never reach our full potential as physical beings until we communicate with our soul. Through meditation, our souls and physical bodies communi-cate. The ability to bring these qualities through to our conscious mind is demonstrated through out of body experiences of persons who have died and returned to life, and through genuine psychics who can see the past. This is the infinite capabilities of their soul break-ing through to their conscious mind.

This must be why the Monks in India spend their lives meditating. It is not a chore; it is a pleasure to experi-ence the pure love of God and put the omnipotence of the soul into communication with the physical mind.

This process cannot be developed simply by verbal dis-cussion with another human being. It must be done by the person through meditation. I once asked a Master, “Can we accomplish the same thing through prayer?”

He replied, “Praying is asking favors from God; medita-tion is communicating with God. Communication with the Divine is the way to enlightenment and love.”

Of course, had organized religion retained personal meditation in their philosophies, there would be no monetary gain to be had, only the spiritual enlighten-ment of their parishioners. Eventually their parishioners would attain sufficient enlightenment to depart and be-gin teaching others the joy of meditation.

Unfortunately, now that meditation is becoming popu-lar again, there are the greedy few that teach newcom-ers for a large fee as there are always those who take something given freely by God and charge others for it. It would seem more proper that if a group of spiritual people want to organize and share their experiences they should be self-supporting, outside their church, and meet only to enjoy each other’s spirituality and in-struct newcomers.

On Meditation"...the practice of meditation is the primary method one must employ to arrive at higher states of consciousness. Cosmic Consciousness, and beyond, is not attainable through intellect because the mind cannot experience or understand God. "

We all have the ability to connect directly with the great energy of the Cosmos, an energy which we call God. This is what is missing from most organized religions. Most of the people of the world, at least initially, need guidance in the path to God. It is a shame most orga-nized religions choose to keep their flocks tethered to them, rather than revealing the truth.

Meditation and ancient knowledge were the basis for the Nazarene, Hindu, and Buddhist spirituality. This is why they were the primary religions used by Constan-tine to form Christianity. Unfortunately, the job of com-municating with God, and the joy of the development of spirituality, was left to the church while individuals were assigned the task of obtaining favors through prayer. To make matters worse, religions that followed failed to make their parishioners aware that everyone’s sins were already forgiven through Grace by Jesus, and that adherence to Jewish Law was no longer necessary.

Jesus said in Mathew 7, Verses 7-8, "Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you. For whosoever asketh receiveth and he that seeketh, findeth, and to him that knocketh shall it be opened."

Meditation is not for everyone. It is for persons who have experienced religion and are ready for something more enlightening. There is an old saying that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Since I have begun meditating, my life has drastically changed for the better. I feel closer to God; I am no longer anxious or fear the unexpected. With the scientific and spiritual revelations currently appearing daily, it seems like the world has come full circle. I feel confident the future holds spiritual breakthroughs, just as the decades of the recent past have provided technical breakthroughs.

Meditation shall set you free. Introduce others to this wondrous tool of love and direct communication with God and watch them blossom and transform their lives from worldly chaos to unearthly peace.

Getting to the Heart of FreedomBy Carolyn Gervais

What does true freedom look and feel like? Would you be free if you had

every worldly thing you desire? The relationship you long for, the free rein to go where you want when you want, fame, money, power, that big-shot job…..would having any or all of these make you free?

True freedom isn’t something that can be bought, borrowed, or sto-len. True freedom lies in under-standing that the material world to which we have become addicted is nothing but a construct of the illu-sion of separation we have bought into and manifested here on Earth – a false truth.

So there is no fear in losing our at-tachment to anything in the mate-rial world that does not serve our true Self. Your true Self agreed that if and when the material human as-pect imbalanced your real purpose and hindered the breaking of the shell of false truths that you, on a soul level, would transform your human life in order to bring balance between your body, mind, and soul. In doing so, the illusions you cre-ated between those aspects would

gradually fade into the nothingness from which they came.

Signs that imbalance and transfor-mation is at hand, globally and per-sonally, are evident everywhere. The strain of living in the world, especially at this pivotal time in history when everything is going through a metamorphosis of sorts, is peaking. Many people are feeling the heaviness of that in their lives. Some people feel trapped by their society, government, or culture. Others are facing more personal challenges and constraints. This is all a part of the process that is bringing a deeper spiritual need to the human consciousness.

Weak economies and war are symp-toms of untruths into which man-kind has bought. Those symptoms are bringing challenges that are forcing people out of their comfort zones. With each challenge come previously unknown fears and ob-stacles to be faced rather than de-nied.

No matter our circumstances, what culture in which we live, into what family we were born, we have to choose from the opportunities that human existence brings our way. It

is our birthright to experience and use the opportunities we choose in order to find our heart’s inner most freedom.

Not all opportunities, however, come packaged with a bow. In fact, the challenges we face are actu-ally our greatest opportunities and greatest gifts because they force us to face our fears.

Can fear stop you from finding per-sonal freedom? If you choose to deny it, it can. However, it’s only a matter of further life experience before you eventually come to the place in consciousness where most fears, which are false truths, can be overcome. The less you know your-self inwardly, the stronger your denial is, until the need to push through what is ignored becomes so strong it can no longer be de-nied, contained, or put off.

Let’s say the fear of surviving be-comes so emotionally painful that the mind feels it will go insane if it doesn’t let go of the fear complete-ly. You come to a place where you are willing to accept whatever you must to survive. In that moment of

surrender, a sense of peacefulness and inner strength frees you from the ego, shame, and guilt that ham-pered your inner guidance. What you now feel is a sense of empow-erment. You accept that whatever the outcome of this experience, you now have the powerful energy of acceptance, surrender, and in-ner guidance to push through the fear and the unknown to a more aware you that awaits as you move through your learning experience. When the need to overcome your fear overpowers the fear itself, real inward and outward changes take place. This is true freedom.

Many of you have had to give up homes, jobs, and/or relationships and live more modestly than be-fore. There is no shame in that. In fact, these seeming sacrifices are a gift. These are the kind of chal-lenges that are helping humanity to break through the shell of fear, sep-

arateness, and self-denial to new experiences, new opportunities, and relationships that enhance who you have become and continue to become as you move into an ever-expanding awareness of self and the purpose of life.

It is difficult for humans to lose or seemingly give up what they have worked so hard to acquire, to be, to do, and accomplish in a world of du-ality. Nevertheless, those human as-pects of life that have been inwardly outgrown have now become stum-bling blocks to true inner freedom. Isn’t it time to let them go?

You who are reading this have asked, consciously or unconscious-ly, to understand the purpose of your life and, possibly, human exis-tence. The material world is addict-ing, but there comes a point where it can prevent the true freedom of self-knowing and soul growth.

Balancing body, mind, and soul means living in the light of your in-

ner being through the purification of the heart. True freedom doesn’t come with closed minds and hearts or overused misunderstood be-liefs and teachings. True freedom doesn’t know greed, selfishness, fear, hate, or separation from each other. It takes deep searching and challenging inner work to see through and beyond the false be-liefs this duality has given power, but with that comes true freedom.

Waking UpBy Jefferson Parson, MA

I went to the bottom of the deepest dark lake,

Rode on the sole of a moccasin snake,

Prayed the pressure wouldn’t my poor heart break

‘Til I popped to the top, my eyes wide awake.

He spared me his poison all the way down,

But I shuttered to utter all that I found:

Space heaters, tvs and old tennis shoes,

Even an I-phone that’s never been used.,

Huge pieces of plastic, to the earth so unkind,

But the scariest pieces were pieces of mind:

Fear for the future, shame for the past,

Fears that each day would be our last.

Facing my fears didn’t drive them away,

But they’re way less scary in the light of the day.

I say what I feel and I feel what I say,

Which is way better than hiding away.

To bring all this up I had to go down

To the bottom of the lake to find what I found,

Down to the bottom of the deepest dark lake,

‘Til I popped to the top, my eyes wide awake.

A Good Story Requires Rewrites and RememberingBy Jen Hutchinson and Susan Hough

"The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can."~Neil Gaiman

What does it take to write a good story? A beginning, middle and an end? What does it take to write your story?

Do you feel as if you are stuck in the middle of your story? In constant Draft mode? Do you keep coming up with the same ending again and again? Or do you feel as if you are still searching for the perfect ending?

2014 is a Mineral year in the Dagara tradition of West Africa. The Dagara people believe that stories are car-ried in the rocks and minerals of the earth. And that our stories are carried in our bones.

This is a powerful year to let go of or re-write the old stories that no longer serve us, the ones that keep us stuck in the same patterns, the ones that keep produc-ing the same results. It will also be the year to remem-ber the stories of who we truly are.

Friedrich Nietzsche said, "The advantage of a bad mem-ory is that one enjoys the same good things for the very first time – several times." Without remembering, or being able to utilize the knowledge of who we truly are, we experience the same bad things over and over

– the same shame, guilt, anger, or loss – and the build-up leaves us disillusioned, depressed, and disconnected from ourselves in order to distance ourselves from the pain.

RememberingMaya Angelou noted that, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you."

A key element in changing and transforming our stories isn't just the act of writing and re-writing however; it's also this state of remembering.

Certain things have the power to produce healing, pro-vided we remember them. The ability to remember re-leases that thing into an energy form capable of making a difference in our lives.

How do we remember? Scientists say we need visual triggers...if you don't want to forget your keys, leave them by the front door. They also speak of something called echoic triggers. In scientific terms, these relate to memories of things we have heard.

But that word echoic to us is evocative of those deep echoes of our true nature that trigger the memories of who we really are.

In our Living Your Gifts workshops we use the G.I.F.T. protocol: Grounding, Intuition, Feel Your Feelings, to find the True You.

In the same way that scientists say to leave the keys by

Page 27: 2014 March/April Radiance

TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS

Radiance March/April 2014 27

the front door in order to remember, we can develop our intuition to pull those echoes closer to the surface, where they are able to begin to make a difference in our lives.

When we begin to see and experience our true nature, it will express itself in who we are being. This is living the story of who we really are. In your new way of being, you may experience shifting patterns of behavior, ad-dictions, relationships, and the joy of being aligned with your true North.

Re-Writing

However, there is still a need for some re-writing as well to release from the past and avoid derailing our new stories of self.

Last year, Susan went through a particularly traumatic experience. When she came out on the other side, she realized it was a story she had been repeating, and the hardest stories have the biggest lessons, and the most power for transformation.

How do we re-write our stories?Be open to shifts in perspective. Don't write yourself as the victim this time and experience a different outcome. What will it feel like? Who will you be? Sometimes, dis-covery consists not in seeing new lands, but in seeing with new eyes. And Marilyn Ferguson said, “Real prog-ress in understanding nature...the important advances are sudden intuitions, new principals, new ways of see-ing."

Put people around you that support your highest self. Ask them to remind you when you are repeating an old pattern. Speak to your Ancestors/God/Higher Power. Even if you didn't have a good relationship with your Ancestors, the Dagara believe that once our relatives pass, we can ask them, too. They want to help us from the other side to break ancestral patterns, to give us guidance from their new vantage point.

Use ritual. A simple one we used in our Women's Groups is to find a rock, put your old story in it, and throw the rock away. Then find a rock to put your new story into and keep it on your desk to remind you.

Practice Trusting and remember it is a process. Tamra Kieves asks us to "Trust the process. A calling calls to remind you to enter the mystery of instinct and the metamorphosis of an inspired life. Honor your passion to emerge. Say yes to a super-natural, all natural self within."

T he feedback I received after one night's drumming at the Temple of Light , Irvine was, "l always knew I loved drumming, but didn't know how to connect to others through

music." I watched this attendee’s demeanor go from tentative and withdrawn to bouncy and ecstatic. Music heals. Rhythm transforms.

In much the same way blood travels through our veins, energy through our bodies and thoughts run through our heads, drumming moves energy through space and time. Beginning with the attack, sustain and ending of sounds in rhythm, it expends and simultaneously cre-ates energy.

In the right space and context it speaks across age, cul-tures, genders and languages. When I say the "right" space, I mean an open space, a space free of distraction, and free of judgment. A space where one can listen, fo-cus, and connect with the rhythm on the outside and simultaneously hear creative ideas on the inside want-ing to be expressed.

And so attendees trickled in one evening around 7 p.m., all shapes and sizes. Spanish, Indian, Korean, Caucasian, male, female, younger, and older. The breeze over the hills blew through the eucalyptus trees and into the sanctuary. A sunset of pink and orange took shape be-tween the hills outside the rolling side door and the setting was invigorating. We gathered together in the front of the sanctuary and shared introductions and a thought or two about our interest in the event and drumming experience.

Connection Through RhythmBy Robert Steffen

The room was suddenly quiet except for the trickle of a water fountain in the corner of the sanctuary. To join everyone together, I invited them to think of rhythm as a filmstrip in the mind’s eye. The film started rolling and each frame was a marker which will repeat at consis-tent intervals. There were infinite possibilities of what can happen between the points, but the points in time are consistent for our reference and to stay together as a group.

Using a basic time signature of 4/4, we connected on the first beat of four even beats, the "one.” When we had each established the "one" consistently as a group, the creativity and individual voicings of the various in-struments were expressed.

The sun set. We were immersed in a warm glow of a selenite lamp and two decorative lights on either side of the room. The consistency of our rhythm was solid and I invited one attendee to "dance around" the "one" with the unique sound of their drum playing as colorful and articulately as possible, the group held the rhythm. No real right or wrong… just good, better, more even... It was very exciting. First there was trepidation, thinking, a flash of eye contact, and then slowly everyone trusted their hearts.

And it fit! The unique sound of that particular drum reso-nated across the group rhythm and enhanced the feel-ing of the whole dynamic.

The next attendee to the left was invited to do a similar process, less dynamic, but the eyes and smile opened wide to a huge "Aha!” moment. We moved down the

formance credits in California and New York. If you have any questions or comments, he may be reached at [email protected].

line for eight bars or so and the rhythm was alive.

I invited the group to hold the rhythm as I detoured into odd counter rhythms, flams, and rim-shots indulging my inner "Olatunde" and returned to the group, then coun-tered the first attendee’s accents.

“The sound truly became a percussive dialogue of her saying something to us through sound,” I replied.

“In space and time,” she replied.

The man opposite me swayed back and forth, grinning ear to ear as though he was on his favorite roller coaster while a joyful song blasted through his soul.

We were in the "zone" together and it was remarkably complex so early on. People who did not consider them-selves "experienced" drummers were in full surrender and focused on our rhythm. The feeling was trance-like and ecstatic.

Forty-five minutes later, the evening came to a close with a soothing rhythm like an old gospel hymn. The men and women designated simple vocal patterns to sing out together spontaneously around the word "hal-

lelujah.”

It was both masculine and angelic. It felt as if I had been transported to a campfire a hundred years ago where we all renewed our bodies and minds singing spiritu-als together. This dynamic charged my battery for the week, filled my heart with love and renewed my spirit.

All people want to be heard, respected, able to express themselves, feel understood, and included. Drumming is a wonderful way to experience this, especially in a beau-

I 've practiced Ho'oponopono for almost 10 years. it's clear to me that the Hawaiians have a wonderful tool for

clearing the data so we can hear that still, small voice within, whether we call it God, the Divine, or Nature. As you practice Ho'oponopono, you clear the data in your sub-conscious (Unihipili), which frees you to hear the path the Divine has waiting for you. The more you clear the lower self of its programming, the more your higher self (Aumakua) can guide your way.

...The more you clean, the more you receive inspiration from the Divine. The only thing to clean is what you feel inside. The only goal is freedom – to be at Zero.

The world is made up of data and that data needs to be cleaned. How-ever, we can only perceive all that data from within. In other words, there's nothing out there. It's all inside you. That's where you expe-rience problems – and that's where the cleaning needs to be done.

But what is the right way to clean? If cleaning is the number one most important thing to do and the core of the entire Zero Limits process,

Ho'oponopono - Housekeeping for the SoulBy Joe Vitale

how do you do it accurately?

Although there's no one right way to clean, I've found these five ideas work well for me and for others who have followed them:

1. Notice something wrong. This can be triggered by a thought, another person, an event, or anything else. This is the stimu-lus. Before Zero Limits, you no-tice a problem you consider out there. After Zero Limits, you realize the problem is inside. No one can make you mad or upset; you do that inside your-self from what you perceive outside yourself. Whatever the case, the first step is to notice you don't feel good. You're angry, upset, worried, scared, or any other of a wide range of emotions and feelings that could be labeled as unhappy.

2. Start to clean on the feeling. It's not about cleaning on the other person, the thought, the situation, or anything out there. Again, the problem is inside. I'm the one aware of a problem. I'm the one who has to clean it. Saying, "I love you," "I'm sorry," "Please for-give me," and, "Thank you," is the way to clean. You can say

them in any order. I say them nonstop in my mind while feel-ing the problem as I perceive it. And I say them to the Divine.

3. You can use other cleaning methods. For example, my mentor Dr. Hew Len explained blue solar water and how it could help us: "Take a blue glass, any color blue, and pour regular tap water into it. Put the bottle in the sunlight or un-der a light bulb (not fluorescent light) for 15 to 60 minutes. It will solarize the water. You can add it to your drinking water, or any way that you use water. It's wonderful if you have pets, and in any cooking you do. I love to put it in my laundry. I even spray my car's tires before I go on a trip. Blue solar water is a cleaning tool. Drink it or use it any way that you're using wa-ter."

4. Let go until prompted to take inspired action. Dr. Hew Len once told me he cleans on a de-cision three times. If the answer is the same after those clean-ings, he takes action on it. This means that if I get an impulse to do something to resolve the perceived problem, I might clean on it three times before

Page 31: 2014 March/April Radiance

TRUTH CONSCIOUSNESS BLISS

Radiance March/April 2014 31

I actually take any action. This is a way to ensure the action is coming from inspiration and not memory.

5. Repeat.

6. Everyone wants a shortcut to cleaning and reaching Zero. I do, too. But that very impa-tience needs cleaning. Wanting something right now is memo-ry playing out, urging us to get instant gratification. It's data. The Divine has no time and no urgency. Wanting things to unfold faster than they unfold is a wonderful opportunity to clean.

I keep cleaning because it makes me feel lighter, happier, and health-ier. It's a fast-track way for me to re-move the data in my being so that I can get closer to the Divine. It's also easy, effortless, and free.

Waking Up to LoveBy Dawn Kirk

At 7:00 am on January 29, 2008, I took Templeton into my arms. As I came downstairs into our living room, she looked at me and meowed for the first time in close to three

weeks. I had known the week prior that this particular day, a Tuesday, would be the day. All my clients had cancelled their appointments, something that had never occurred.

Templeton meowed and without a thought I scooped her into my arms. I cradled her for just over seven hours except for the thirty minutes I dashed up the street still in my pajamas for a chiropractic appointment.

Templeton had been dying for nearly three weeks. If anyone had told me my cat of nearly 18 years would die over a period of time in my home, I would not have be-lieved them. I would have quietly thought, “I will emo-tionally die being part of that.”

Yet those three weeks instead became a time of living.

Living? Yes, living.

Just after the 2008 New Year, I was told Templeton's insides appeared to be glued together. This was unlike anything the vet had seen. I intuitively thought her sud-den decline was related to drinking the Christmas tree water and clumping cat litter. I then read on-line of the many chemicals in farmed trees that leach into the wa-ter reservoir after trees are brought into homes for the holidays as well as the dangers of litter that can clump internally in cats.

I called another vet who made home visits to schedule putting Templeton to sleep.

It didn't take long to realize my cat was not in pain or suffering. Although she wasn't eating or drinking, she followed me from room to room, she watched while I wrote and she faithfully sat in her window perch. She was not an animal in pain. I was a person in pain.

Templeton didn't need putting to sleep I needed to wake up.

I called the vet to cancel the appointment. There was no answer. An hour later she called me. I assumed she had caller ID. Instead, she had double booked and needed to cancel. We mutually agreed this was a Divine inter-vention.

In the nearly three weeks that passed, Templeton re-vealed so much to me. At first I cried and cried. I made agreements with her like, "I'll take better care of myself if you live," and I discovered other parts of me.

For example, during this time I was also visiting my mother a couple of miles away in physical therapy re-hab. One day driving home, I was surprised to hear a thought zip through my mind, a thought that went, “I am nearing the house of death.’”

What? This was quickly followed by, “Wait a minute. Your home is experiencing a sacred process.”

This surprising voice revealed the part of me still dread-ing her death. Fortunately I was waking up and truly re-

Page 33: 2014 March/April Radiance

alized Templeton was offering me a gift that was holy and sacred. If I chose to be present and engaged, I could be an active participant in her parting Earth.

My opening to this gift changed everything. I remi-nisced, told her stories, witnessed, and wrote of my ex-perience. I continued to cry, but my tears now included joy. I kept candles lit, bought flowers, and repeatedly played George Winston's piano CD Plains.

Moments of quiet that seemed an eternity arrived as I sat on the sofa with Templeton across from me. I talked of how she was freeing the butterfly in me and in the process she was becoming a butterfly herself. I began to describe Rehab in the Universe to her and asked her to consider returning to me four months later the week of my birthday.

And for some reason, I told her the doves would come to be with her to assist her in going home to the stars.

At lunch on that Tuesday in 2008, I called Jerry into the room where Templeton and I were. I felt like she need-ed to hear something from him. With tears streaming down his cheeks, he shared from his heart. Then Tem-pleton held her head up and gave a meow she had not given in weeks.

Moments later she died.

I've heard the spirit does not leave the body immediate-ly. It certainly felt this way with Templeton. I continued to hold her for most of the afternoon before brushing her, putting oils on her, then laying her on two quilted fabric squares I had forgotten about in the top of my closet. Imagine my joy when I opened the box and found squares of quilted butterflies. Two, one for me and one for her, became her burial cloth.

That night I painted her burial box. The next morning we placed her in it alongside tokens related to our jour-ney. In a light snow, we laid to rest this dear cat that, in her dying, had been a great teacher to me.

After coming inside, I sat on the sofa and looked out onto our small Nashville yard. There circled about Tem-pleton's grave were doves, doves sitting on the ground in a semi-circle and one lone sentinel sitting on the small rock wall overlooking our yard.

As dates and days don't often coincide, when I realized last year's anniversary fell on a Tuesday for the first time since her death, I knew I had to set the day aside. George Winston's "Plains" again played throughout the day as I held Chickie, the little stuffed chick Templeton brought to me while meowing loudly every morning and night. This tattered, worn chick stirs my only regret.

I regret I was not awake to Templeton's beauty and

presence for much of the time we lived together. I was walking Earth, holding a job, looking alive, and fulfilling a role, yet deep down inside much of the time I was not listening to me. I was not present in my life.

Why does it often take a crisis such as illness, divorce, job loss, flood, tornadoes, fire, or death to awaken us? And when another dies how often do we avoid and sup-press grief due to the discomfort of our known and un-known regrets? How is it that as time passes we return to our routines and ruts?

Life, this flesh and blood time we have on Mother Earth, is so very precious. To our knowledge this is the only planet on which our spirited souls get to find form and come home in this physical way. I don't know about you, but I take so much for granted and am still prone to sleepwalking, forgetting this Earth journey is a sacred process. Then there are times when the brilliance and beauty of it all seeps into me and I am breathless. With tears of joying welling in my eyes, I can hardly take in the beauty of being alive.

Right now is one of those times when my breath is tak-en by both deep sorrow and great joy.

As Templeton died, I cradled her. Today I cradle her memory as I honor her and myself, our journey and our hearts.

Today on this the sixth year anniversary of her death, I have taken time to recall what I learned, to reflect on the degree to which I've embodied these lessons, to extend self-forgiveness for all I have lost through my ignoring and to listen to the new layers that emerge in this old yet new still unfolding story.

There are many plains in addition to George Winston playing through my life. New layers and new plains of-fering me continued opportunity to awaken to the mys-tery of my journey and my heart for on this anniversary I awakened with a sick cat.

Remember my asking Templeton to return the week of my birthday?

When Bogeysattvah was not at my bedside this morn-ing, I knew something was wrong. Feverish and curled in a ball, he lay on the futon where Templeton had passed. Bogey lay in my lap for three hours as we await-ed the vet. We sat in the same space and I found myself again in the space of staying awake and aware, feeling joy and compassion for my cat and for most of the time just being in the love we share. I didn't do it perfectly. I felt the fear of what if periodically, but for most of the day, I stayed open to this unfolding mystery and felt joy getting to be with this dear Spirit again.

There have been times when I've wept and wondered, 'If I had known how painful life on Earth could be would I have agreed to come here?'

The doves in my yard and the cat in my lap both remind me. I came here to hear and honor the heart, this physi-

USA: Urge Your Representativeto Join the CongressionalAnimal Protection Caucus!

Co-Chairs: Reps. Jim Moran (D-VA) and John Campbell (R-CA)

Action Needed: Please take a moment to urge your representative to join the Congressional Animal Protec-tion Caucus, a group of U.S. representatives committed to advancing animal welfare legislation in Congress.

The Congressional Animal Protection Caucus is a beacon of hope for animals in Washington, D.C. This caucus is a bipartisan group of U.S. representatives who are interested in promoting and advancing commonsense, humane animal welfare laws.

Legislators don’t have to join any caucus; they do so because they want to. With your help, the ASPCA hopes to increase awareness of and membership in the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus.

There are 83 representatives in the Caucus, and that’s a great foundation! Of course, that also means there are nearly 350 members of the House who are not involved, but we’re confident many are animal lovers who would join if asked. Your own rep may not know about the Caucus yet—but as a constituent, you are in the best position to help make him or her aware of the Caucus.

Visit the Animal Protection Caucus’s website (http://animalprotectioncaucus.moran.house.gov/) to learn more about the group’s goals and achievements.

Email to your U.S. representative in Washington, D.C., asking him or her to consider joining the Congressio-nal Animal Protection Caucus. Our system will identify who represents you and provide a pre-drafted letter once you submit your zip code. Please use the space provided in our letter to tell your representative why animal protection is important to you.

Not to worry—if your representative is already a member, we’ll provide a different letter that allows you to say “thank you”!

Just visit http://animalprotectioncaucus.moran.house.gov/, enter your zip code and get started.

If you have ever taught or enrolled in a metaphysical course, you may have noticed that upon class completion the

number of students who graduate is often much lower than the number of students who enrolled. This can be confusing to the remaining students as well as the teacher and leave the students with their often erroneous ideas of what happened.

When someone enrolls in classes at a university or for their business, the dynamic is completely differ-ent than that of courses or classes that seek to raise consciousness levels and delve deeper into univer-sal wisdom. As experienced teach-ers in metaphysical arts, we would like to share our findings of why it is students drop out and what can teachers and students do in order to create the best atmosphere and experience for learning.

1. Igotsomuchotherstuffwithwhich to deal. One of the jobs of the human ego is to protect us. Ego does not like change be-cause change is unpredictable and unpredictable is potential-ly dangerous, so the ego will

do its best to prevent change. One student began a medium ship class and within a month had a friend move into her liv-ing room couch. In addition to the new class, she now had the responsibility of helping her friend. Another student, kept trying to begin a meditation course but either would get ill, her child would catch a cold, or her other child’s schedule would change to conflict with the meditation class. Our job as conscious human beings is to recognize when things start to happen and not let them keep us from our journey.

2. There is too much sharing. For those of us who tend to be pri-vate, hearing other people’s stories can be annoying. How-ever, sharing ideas and experi-ences is an integral part of the human experience. Even if it seems extraneous at time, we learn from others and often the questions and stories from students allow the class to be more effective.

3. I do not get enough time to talk

10 ReasonsStudents Do Not Complete Spiritual DevelopmentPrograms By Christine Christensen and Dina Kleiman

about MY issues. In a group set-ting, the teacher must be fair to all. If you feel your voice is not heard, share your concerns with your teacher. Many teach-ers and coaches offer private sessions.

4. Iknowthisstuff. This is one of the common thoughts the ego has. You may know some of the topics, but there is always a way to delve deeper into each top-ic. For example, we may have spent years doing child work and still, emotions, events, and issues from our childhood still can pop up.

5. Thisclassisweird,it’stoowoo-wooforme.This is a common feeling because in our left-brain, logical society, we are taught only logic and reason matter. We are taught science, math, literature, and history, but not intuition. We are not taught how to talk our bodies and how to hear our spirit. We associate spirituality with religion (which often strips an individual of his/her personal power) and intel-ligence with logic. However,

10 ReasonsStudents Do Not Complete Spiritual DevelopmentPrograms By Christine Christensen and Dina Kleiman

spirituality is not a religion nor does it require one to give up logic or reason. In fact, a good teacher will encourage you to question everything you hear, read, and see. Use your brain but remain open to the possibil-ity humans are capable of more than just five senses.

6. I don’t knowwhat to tell myfriends and family about thisclass. If you feel your friends and family will support you, explain this is a spiritual devel-opment and personal healing class and share the class sylla-bus with them. If you feel they may not understand or sup-port you, tell them you are tak-ing a meditation or a personal growth class.

7. My family does not approve. It is important to be very clear with yourself about what your intentions for going down this spiritual path are. When you are clear your intentions are good and in harmony with a higher good, it is easier to accept. Al-though some people may not agree, it is your life path and purpose you are seeking. You cannot change how another feels or thinks, but you can be-come more at peace with the decisions you make by under-standing they are of good in-tentions.

8. MyfamilyneedsmemorethanI need this class. Often times your family or partner may see you begin to change. They may not understand what is hap-pening; they may be confused, or intimidated by the changes they see in you. They may also feel if you change, where will that leave them? Will you still want or need them? They may also feel your new boundaries and independence directly con-

flict with their wants. They may put up blocks, create drama and stress in order to focus your at-tention away from the class and back to them. Chances are, they will do this subconscious-ly and may not have intend to hurt you. However, just as your ego does not like change, the same applies to their ego. And in the same way that your ego will create blocks, so will theirs.

9. This is too much (or I don’twant to deal with my issues. It’s too much responsibility. I don’t need this. I don’t have time. ) Yes, “stuff” does come up. Buried childhood begin to resurface. The truths we have been avoiding and hid-ing show up. This may be scary or uncomfortable. You may want to “run.” Be assured your teachers are here to guide you through this. They have had these feelings as well. Your classmates are experiencing this as well. Reach out for sup-port through this uncomfort-able process. A student who was at the 6-month point came in one day and declared she was close to quitting. After speak-ing with her teacher, it became clear this was too much for her. She felt powerless because she could now see and know every-thing that was happening. Her teacher showed her everything she was seeing and feeling would have been happening anyway, but she wouldn’t have known what it was and would have possibly wrote it off to mental instability. Remember, evolving your abilities puts you more in your power than hiding from them. It may be scary, but it is well worth it.

10. I don’t like the teacheror theteaching style. Growing up,

you probably had teachers you didn’t like (and some you prob-ably only liked after getting used to them or their style). The same holds true when we become adults. Sometimes we do not resonate with the teacher’s energy. Sometimes we do not like how they explain things. Sometimes we are not ready for the material being presented. Prior to leaving the program, check in with your-self. Do you truly not resonate with the teacher or is it one of the reasons listed above and disliking the teacher is just an excuse?

We hope this article helps you rec-ognize these feeling and thoughts should they arise in yourself, your classmates, or your students. As you continue on your journey of spiritual development, remember it’s most important to be present with your process, take account-ability for your journey, and honor your spirit by continuing to seek out wisdom from within and without.

Page 38: 2014 March/April Radiance

Sometimes we set our sights on one goal and, in the process, may miss an opportunity to try something different.

Since I lost my full-time position marketing for a children's hospital in Orange two years ago, a job which I thought I would have for a long time, I have been spreading my wings so to speak.

Working as the editor and graphic designer for Radiance is a blessing. I have met so many wonderful people at the Holistic Healing Fairs and, of course, the staff and Rev. Danielle are incredible.

Working on the magazine is only one way in which I sup-port myself. I also do graphic design and websites for businesses, do commission paintings, write for other magazines occasionally, write book proposals for other authors, and have even finished my first ghostwriting assignment, a book called Miracle Dogs which will be published in the fall.

When I think back to when I was working full time, I re-ally was not happy. I was not using many of the skills I had honed throughout the years. I wanted to be on my own again, although I was afraid to try because of the tough economy.

Fortunately, the Universe heard my unconscious pleas for a happier life and my job was eliminated. At that time, I was devastated as so many people are when they lose a job, a steady paycheck, and the social envi-ronment of working with others.

However, this event turned into a wonderful opportu-nity. I have been able to take on a variety of projects I would never have had the opportunity to do had I been working full time.

My failure - and success - is completely on my shoulders. As a single woman, I can only count on what I earn. I have learned so much about me during this time.

The point of this article is to ask you to think about your life. Are you doing what you really want to do or are you settling because you are afraid to spread your wings?

To be truthful, I would probably be still working full time if the Universe had not stepped in for me. Or, maybe I would have eventually gotten it and quit. It really does not matter.

I am here, enjoying every day doing something creative, but always keeping my ears, eyes, and heart open to new opportunities to be make money, be creative, and especially have fun and relish today...now...the present.

After all, that's all we can really change.
