Equivalent Fractions: Developing Understanding
These pages are designed to help lead students to an understanding of why certain
fractions are equivalent to each other before teaching them the standard method
for determining equivalent fractions. Students are encouraged to look for
patterns in certain fractions. In order to maximize student learning, teachers should
guide student discussion of fraction patterns before, during, and after
completing these worksheets.

Equivalent Fractions: Find the Fractions
This activity can be used for practice after students have developed the ability to determine
whether or not fractions are equivalent. 1. Scatter the fraction cards throughout the
room. 2. Have individuals or partners find the fraction
cards around the room. 3. When students find a fraction card, they
record the fraction in the correct column on their recording sheet (underneath the equivalent fraction).
4. Students continue until they have found and recorded all the fraction cards.

Equivalent Fractions: Snowball Fight
33
Instructions 1. Give each student a half sheet of paper
with a fraction on it. Tell them to crumple it up like a snowball.
2. Explain to students that they will be having a snowball fight. During the fight, they will throw paper snowballs at each other without running or yelling. When told to “freeze,” they need to stop the snowball fight immediately.
3. Begin the fight, and stop it when appropriate.
4. Have each student choose one snowball, open it up, and find a partner that has a fraction that is equivalent to their own. Partners should stand next to each other until everybody has found a partner.
5. Check that each student partnered up appropriately, and then repeat!

Equivalent Fractions: Mystery Pictures
This activity should be used with students who have a good understanding of
equivalent fractions and are able to determine whether fractions are equivalent with relative ease. This activity would be extremely frustrating to a student who is
not proficient in determining whether fractions are equivalent.
The instructions at the top of the page tell
students how to color different sets of equivalent fractions.
