Toy Making
Hello!
Anyone’s final year at university is a massive step. For many of us, it has marked the direction we’ll head in when we leave. We’ve all spent the year exploring personal projects that we felt passionate about, while honing and experimenting with crafts and methods to help us tell our stories.The most important aspect of illustration is communication. We hope that as you look through our work, you really get an idea of the variety of expression that the term ‘Illustration’ allows. This year, we’ve communicated through sculpture, installation, interactive design, stained glass, printing, painting, drawing - the list goes on. This is partly thanks to the flexibility of the course, the facilities on offer, and partly thanks to the ceaselessly curious nature of people.

Joshua Barr

My work can be traced back to my love of street culture and is heavily influenced by the inner city lifestyle I lead. I have been painting graffiti since my early teens and it has influenced my work immensely over the past few years. This is the main reason why typography is one of the main focuses for most of my work as an illustrator. I like to work with different phrases, quotes and lyrics, manipulating the type in a way that will give the text more impact or resonance.
Over the past year I have studied in depth the origins of graffiti and its links with advertising, in turn this influenced me to go on to study the craft of sign writing. My research of traditional sign writing has now inspired me to produce a wide range of works using traditional methods to illustrate modern day issues.

Madeleine Burrows
I enjoy experimenting with a variety of media including screen printing and digital collage. My primary interest is in children’s illustration, and this is reflected in my portfolio. I hope to further my development in my future career.

Through the years I have spent studying at Duncan and Jordanstone I have focused on various styles and techniques in the creation and development of illustrated characters. Extracting pieces from day to day reality to create cartoon styled drawings in a humorous form. Taking real life animals and creatures and using their characteristics and personalities to give them a more human like form. Using various emotions and props to give each character individuality and personality. Styled with bright eye-catching colours, patterns and thick outlines.
I have worked with various materials to bring the characters to life in 3D form using woodprints and light-boxes. Also branding some of the characters to use for t-shirt printing which are for sale to the public. Some of my work also includes a series of paintings capturing personal real life experiences using imagery, mark making and colour.

My projects range from humorous books and zines, to dramatic narrative illustration and deal with social issues such as feminism, censorship, homophobia and same-sex marriage.

Rossi Gifford
Spirit Leaves, a 22 page comic of original art and story, including extras pages following the process making the comic.
Freya, the Albino Deer girl is a curious soul who is in search of a demon, the cause of recent imbalance in the forest. Along her journey she meets a Skoll, a wolf boy in search for the “Beast”. Together they agree to find this evil force and prove to their tribes that they are capable on their own...but how stop a demon?

Paul Hempstead
My work’s aim is to create a satirical view on contemporary living. Picking up on topics like youth culture and taboos within society I try to create a subverted reflection of my life and the world around me. I often portray these reflections through use of fictional characters that I then involve in short narratives that take the form of books, prints and sculptural installations.

Linzi Jamieson
This year I have focused on improving my pencil drawing and have tried to create hyper detailed portraits, often of celebrities. I enjoy creating portraits as you can try to capture somebody’s characteristics and personality within an image.
I have used celebrities within a few of my projects this year. When illustrating the story of “Peter Pan”, I ‘casted’ celebrities as the main protagonists. I have also created a series of screen-printed images in the style of Art Nouveau posters in which I have created products that offer you the characteristics of the celebrities endorsing them.
I use materials such as pencil, pen, oil paints and digital photography and on screen use software such as Adobe® Photoshop and Illustrator.

Iida Lanki
In my work I focus on exploring storytelling through objects. My main inspirations are historical, especially drawing from the Victorian period. I am interested in social history, particularly subjects that have or had a taboo status. Domestic ceramic objects have given me a great template from which to explore diverse issues using traditional methods of making. The image is of a pot with coasters inside. The project was inspired by Victorian pot lids and the quack medicine culture of Victorian times. The pot lid depicts aspects of quack medicine advertising and franchising. The drugs used for such remedies are revealed by opening the pot.

My intentions were never to focus on one set theme but to look into different interests and moments in my life. While delving into a variety of topics over the course of the year, a reoccurring theme of exploration of textures and mark making has surfaced.
My work focuses mostly on handmade and or found textures to create vibrant and eye-catching images while bearing in mind the subject matter. I have explored different branches of design, whether it is making items for children (an interactive animation) as well as adults (a dark themed story book based on Scottish myths) or exploring traditional or more digital methods of illustration.

Allan MacRitchie
My work focuses on story and narrative, communicated either through images alone or together with text. I enjoy working on projects relating to music, graphic novels and event posters. I’ve been inspired by artists whom I have met at conventions such as ELCAF and I would like to pursue a similar career in self-publishing.

Matthew Martin
My work is predominantly created using drawings, fragmented forms and found imagery. Throughout this year I have produced work dealing with subjects ranging from deconstruction and linguistics through to distorted perception and literature, focusing primarily on silk-screen printing to produce my final outcomes.
Extra curricular design work has influenced the development of my work this year pushing my illustrations toward a more graphic aesthetic. Drawings, shapes, photographs and typography are layered over each other to make compositions out of a number of elements related to the said subject matter, these together are intended to communicate the message as specified by the brief.

This year I have been intrigued by the human psyche, my illustrations focus mainly on narrative, character development and social experience. Throughout the year, my work has tried to convey these themes through a range of media and a variety of charity campaigns, art as therapy, packaging and narrative work.
My illustrations are usually intricate and detailed with fluid line work, however I enjoy experimenting with colour and textures in personal work.

Much of my work is stained-glass orientated and I’ve been looking at ways of combining this unique and traditional narrative medium with contemporary illustration.
I have designed and hand-made stained-glass illustrations for the Russian novel, ‘The Master and Margarita,’ and a large stained-glass window to commemorate 100 years since WW1, which show the possibilities for using glass in a modern context. I have also undertaken several non-glass illustration projects such as book cover and postage stamp designs, all of which are linked by niche subjects, colour and pattern.

Katie McPherson
My enthusiasm for illustration lies in creating work that helps to educate and inform.Imagery has the power to influence people at a glance. Everything that needs to be said can be explained with clear, engaging graphics. Whether it’s learning a subject, teaching children about a topic, or promoting a cause, I try to create an enjoyable learning environment by connecting with the target audience’s interests and emotions.
This year I’ve explored a number of fields, including app design, developing and testing a business concept, jewellery making and children’s book illustration. Each experience has shown me the unique possibilities of educating through design.

Ceri Morrice
Adept in both digital and traditional mediums (drawing, painting, collage, woodwork, printing, design and animation) the only thing that is consistent throughout my work is my love of it.

Rachel Nesbitt
With a keen interest in children’s books, I have geared the majority of my work towards illustration for children. I have done this through writing and illustrating my own picture books. I also have a passion for all things handmade, this is shown through a series of soft toys I created based on extinct animals.

Victoria Pickford
My work this year has looked at mythology, the supernatural and dark history. Through considering and developing these ideas I have produced several quite different projects using a range of approaches. The Supernatural field kit follows the fictional exploits of 19th century scientist and supernaturalist Dr J Skellon. The kit has several parts including a field guide written by the doctor and journaling his discoveries and exploits and a map tracking his journey across the globe.
Other projects I have worked on this year include creating a deck of cards featuring famous and unknown criminals from different eras and a short fictional book with a supernatural twist.

My work during 4th year focused on my fascination with youth subcultures, sports, Patricia Highsmith and proper ergonomic health. A heavy emphasis was placed on narrative design with zines, apps and fake memorabilia created throughout the two semesters.

Natasha Rubczak
My work consists of a variety of printed work and hand drawn images which focus on line, tone and pattern. This year my work is focused primarily on people and places, both as surrounding environments or particular sites and buildings. Themes of remembrance, loss and empathy are conveyed and directly correlate to the environment in which the events are taking place.

Katie Watt
During this year I have completed a range of different projects. They are all very different, using techniques such as screen-printing, laser cutting, animation and digital software. Each project has its own theme which is thoroughly researched and then the best way to visually communicate the message is decided upon to make the final outcome. These have included handmade books, games, illustrative images and book jacket designs. This image comes from a hand printed book, which is about Mary Anning, a female palaeontologist in the 1800’s, who was not given the recognition she deserved because she was a woman. The aim is to encourage the reader to discover her life and learn a little about her through exploring the book.
