READERS’ CHOICE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2014 • 10

By Matt StefanskiThe Herald-Times

Bucceto’s Smiling Teeth owner Paul Heilbrunn tells his employees to keep an eye on the ball.

He constantly reminds them to watch the door for incoming customers and tells them to make sure that customers’ drinks are always full. And according to Herald-Times readers, Bucceto’s food and service is exceptional.

Bucceto’s was the recipient of not one, but four Reader’s Choice awards in 2014.

In the food category, Bucceto’s received first in Italian, first in lunch spot, first in pizza and second in catering.

Heilbrunn said providing the highest quality food and the freshest ingredients at a reasonable price is the reason for Bucceto’s success.

Jeremy Hogan | Herald-Times

Sister restaurants Puccini’s Smiling Teeth were established in Indianapolis in 1991, and in 2004, Heilbrunn opened Bloomington’s first Bucceto’s on the east side. Heilbrunn opened a second location on the west side of Bloomington in 2006.

“I love the concept,” he said. “Our menu satisfies every time, from exotic to traditional pizzas and pastas, you’ll see everybody in our restaurant from college kids to families.”

In addition to offering a wide variety of menu items, Bucceto’s also serves beer and wine. Heilbrunn said another reason for Bucceto’s success is that his staff consistently pro-vides exceptional customer service.

“I get compliments all of the time about our employees, food, service and cleanliness,” he said.

Heilbrunn said one of the most recent hits at Bucceto’s has been the gluten-free menu.

“At first, we just had pizza and pasta, but now we have a complete gluten-free menu,” he said.

Heilbrunn said the wide variety of menu items offered at a fair price is also what sets Bucceto’s apart from other Italian restaurants.

“It’s not just the pizza,” he said. “The wife can get a salad, and the husband can get a chicken dinner.”

MaryAnn Dougherty, co-owner of Carpets Plus Colortile in Bloomington, attributes the suc-cess of her business partially to the continuous

training and education of her employees. Dougherty said she, along with co-owner and husband Mark, consistently train employees on products and even offer training seminars to local contractors and installers.

After working in the flooring business for multiple years,

the Doughertys decided to establish Hoosier Floor Covering in 1994. The business is often known by local residents as Hoosier Floor Covering, but is also under the Carpets Plus Colortile buying group. Today, the Dougherty’s own and operate two Carpet Plus Colortile locations in Bloomington, one on the east side of the city and the other on the west side.

Carpet Plus Colortile offers carpet, tile, hardwood, lami-nate and vinyl flooring as well as installation services, accord-ing to its website. Carpets Plus Colortile also uses a drawing program that shows customers what flooring would look like in their homes or businesses. In the next few weeks, they plan on introducing HGTV flooring into their stores.

MaryAnn said she and Mark strive to maintain complete honesty with their customers and always want to provide great service.

MaryAnn also said she has developed relationships with customers and employees through being involved in the business.

“The people who work for me who are not my immediate family have become family to me, and that’s how we try to treat everyone that walks in the door,” MaryAnn said.

For instance, ETC for the home offers unique products

such as Big Green Egg grills, Staub cookware, Luna Bella lamps and Thymes lotion. ETC for the home is also an autho-rized dealer of Hunter Douglas window treatments.

“That’s just our strategy to have unique items that make it interesting, so people can come and create a unique space,” King said. “We focus on creating an environment that’s fun.”

Although ETC for the home was established in 2012, Herald-Times readers have chosen ETC for the home as the best store for decor in the Reader Choice award’s retail category. King said ETC for the home was founded because of the owner’s love for furniture and unique items.

In addition to offering many unique products, ETC for the home also has a design center where customers can meet with professionals specializing in architectural design, inte-rior design and window treatments. King said with the wide variety of designers, customers can have every aspect of their house designed, including the interior, exterior and landscape.

“Bloomington has been wonderful in supporting us,” King said. “We are still getting new people into the store every day and finding out what a unique surprise it is to walk into our store and find out the incredible products we have.”

Readers of The Herald-Times say that Girls Inc. is the best place to find volunteer opportunities around Bloomington. As an organization that supports

girls and promotes their emotional and physical well-being, Girls Inc. has been a part of Bloomington’s local history since 1975. A proponent of girl power and gender equality, this organization was created to teach girls that they are the masters of their fates, so to speak, and full of potential.

Serving more than 360 girls last year, with 170 indi-

vidual and group volunteers, program director Daisy Chew writes in an email, Girls Inc. offers girls after-school programs (with homework help included), sporting leagues, day camps and other special events for their edification and enjoyment.

Volunteers are involved in every aspect of the Girls Inc. program and take active roles in the activities that are offered to the girls. Volunteers can choose to become program facilitators, sports coaches or tutors in the after school pro-gram. Volunteers are a crucial element to the programs that Girls Inc. can offer, and as such, are expected to be responsible role models.

Being a Girls Inc. volunteer “is not a filing or copying job,”

Chew said – the work expected of a volunteer is very hands-on, and every volunteer, regardless of what activity they are a part of, is expected to be active in their roles for the girls’ sakes.

As Chew said, “Our volunteers are mentors. They have the responsibility of enforcing rules at our agency so that it remains a safe and healthy environment for all involved, but they also have the duty to guide the girls in their own decision making processes.”

Members of the May family have been helping area residents with their insurance needs for three generations, beginning in 1949. Every year since

2003, The May Agency of ISU Insurance Services has been voted as a Reader’s Choice award winner in the Herald-Times, and the agency received the award again this year.

“We have a reputation of having good customer service, being able to find customers whatever types of insurance they are looking for,” advertising manager Sarah May said.

“We sponsor and support all kinds of local events. I hope we made a name for ourselves that people recognize and like to work with.”

The May Agency offers business, home, auto, life and health coverage, according to the agency’s website. The May Agency also has a claims agent, who clients can specifically work with in the event of a claim.

“It helps a lot to have a dedicated person who will be work-ing for you,” Sarah May said.

Sarah May said she enjoys taking part in the family busi-ness, which was started by her grandfather, because she likes working with people and enjoys the of the agency.

Sarah May also said insurance is an industry where people wish they didn’t have to buy the product. However, she said those at the May Agency try to make it as possible for custom-ers to get the best product they need.

“We are selling this product that protects your life,” Sarah May said. “If you have a loss, it is far, far worse if you don’t have insurance coverage. We try to educate people that it’s a necessary thing and a product that makes sense.”
