Unfortunately there is a pervasive thought that cow sense and

science are disjoined. Science, or rather advancements in science, allow for new or revised tools to aid in selection and management of beef cattle. It’s not hard to think of examples: artificial insemination (A.I.) protocols and the accompanying products (EAZI-BREED™ CIDR®, MGA, etc.), implants and feed additives, EPDs, economic selection indexes, genomic tools, and yes, crossbreeding strategies. These tools and strategies were developed through science.

So where does cow sense fit? The answer is easily identified, yet much harder to employ. Cow sense is the ability to use science to improve the profitability of the respective beef centric enterprise. Why is it hard to employ? To adopt and correctly use

science requires not only knowledge of the particular tool, but also detailed knowledge of the production environment and marketing goals.

If we focus on genetic tools and strategies, there are a few main ones that come to mind: crossbreeding, EPDs, selection indexes and DNA technology. Crossbreeding, I would argue, makes economic sense for every commercial producer. However, the breeds utilized and the structure of the mating system will vary not only by region but also by individual herds. The identification of environmental constraints (feed availability, climate, etc.; Table 1) and marketing goals dictates the breeds in a crossing system. This is the cow sense part. Understanding these factors allows a producer to take full advantage of the science of heterosis (see Table 2 on page 43).

EPDs have been available to beef cattle producers for decades and are the fundamental backbone of genetic improvement. However, correct utilization of them requires cow sense, or knowledge of environmental constraints and production goals. Most seedstock producers know the frustration of having advised clientele relative to bull choice only to see the client leave the sale with the exact opposite of what they really needed.

There are a few good examples of this misuse of science, and thus poor cow sense. Research has shown that cows with the genetic propensity to milk heavily require more nutrients year round, not only when they are milking. The National Research Council (NRC) data shows a cow that produces 25 pounds of milk at peak lactation requires 10% more feed energy than

a cow producing 15 pounds of milk at peak lactation. To see a 10% difference in feed energy with regards to mature weight would require moving from a 1,000 pound cow to a 1,200 pound cow, or a change of 200 pounds of body weight. We know selection for increased yearling weights has led to larger mature cows that are more expensive to maintain. Moderating mature cow size and selecting for an optimal window of milk production is beneficial when it comes to cutting costs regardless of your production environment. However, in limited feed environments females with high maintenance energy requirements may also have difficulty maintaining an acceptable body condition score and rebreeding. Nugent et al. (1993) determined that with limited nutrient availability, breeds with a high genetic potential for milk production had longer anestrous periods which lead to lower conception rates during a fixed breeding season.

Another misuse of science is related to the choice of economic selection indexes. It is absolutely critical to fully understand the intended use

(production goals) assumed by an index before you use them to select herd bulls. A great example is $B, a very useful terminal index. However, it would be an exceptionally poor choice for those who retain replacement heifers and sell calves at weaning. Understanding how selection tools, such as economic index values, fit your production goals takes cow sense.

There have been several lethal genetic defects uncovered in the past few years. And there will be more identified in the future. Luckily, genomics has allowed for the development of tools to identify carriers. Is it safe for you to use a carrier bull? This takes detailed knowledge of your own cow herd and the risk of the cows being carriers themselves. The answer is not the same for everyone. Another very beneficial use of genomics is paternity assignment. Many commercial producers turn out large groups of bulls, with knowledge of what their EPDs were on the day they were purchased. However, we know that some are actually better than what their low accuracy EPDs suggest and others are worse. So what can you do

when all bulls were supposed to be calving ease and during calving season you end up having to pull some calves? Cow sense would look for a way to use technology to better inform how you use those same bulls the next year. You could paternity test the problem (large birth weight) calves, identify the problem sire(s) and only use them on cows the next year. Although parentage testing is generally thought to be a seedstock application, cow sense should tell us we can use the same thing on commercial ranches as well.

Cow sense, simply put, is knowing how to use science and understanding that production environment and individual marketing goals dictate what tools should be used and how to use them. This is sometimes much easier said than done but luckily there are several tremendous resources that have been built as “go-to” sources for information. LIVINGSTON RANCH A.I. PROJECTS T R A T T O N , C O L O R A D O

We normally do not spend this many days at one ranch with Genex chute-side service, but this was an opportunity to

work on a training program for Genex staff working with large groups of cows. It was also a great opportunity to learn from the owners of Livingston Ranch, Mike and Julie Livingston, along with their herdsman, Danny, on the outstanding stockmanship skills and the process of managing pastures and holding traps for the logistics of handling large groups of cows and calves on consecutive days.

July 18 – 4 a.m. A quick breakfast followed by one last check to make sure I had everything loaded in the pickup before departing Republic, Mo., for Colorado. I made a quick stop at Tescott, Kan. to pick up the Large’s portable artificial insemination (A.I.) barn for the project.

On a good day with little wind I could travel 60 or 65 mph if I had the sway bar clamped down tight. This was not going to be one of those days as the south wind was ramping up and I watched those big wind turbine generators along Interstate 70. Traveling 50 mph with 18 wheelers speeding past was going to make for a tough 300 miles. As my friend Tyler from Alabama says, “just try to keep it between the mustard and the mayonnaise” referring to the yellow stripes on the left and the white line on the right. I made it to Hays, Kan., by 1 p.m. and decided to take a long lunch break and stock up on supplies for the ranch cabin.

Fortunately I am not a novice at pulling these barns. One of my longest trips was 700 miles to Bell Ranch in New Mexico for their annual heifer A.I. project. This gives you an idea how valuable the A.I. barn is when working with large numbers of cattle.

My break paid off as the remainder of the journey was more relaxed. I don’t know if the wind backed off or I was adjusting and handling it better.

7:30 p.m. At Livingston Ranch I met up with Mike for a quick overview of the next couple days. After a tour of the ranch cabin, five miles north of headquarters, Mike told me he was going to sleep until midnight then get up and bale hay with some dew until 2:30 a.m. It was going to be a short night for everyone with round up of group number one at daybreak, the first of four groups we will A.I.

July 19 – 5 a.m. The alarm sounded. I hadn’t moved a muscle since I fell on the bed. The ranch crew was going to start at the far end of the pasture about three miles east, moving the cows and calves toward headquarters. My job was to block the road when they came out of the gate for the last half mile of travel to the pens.

8:00 a.m. Roundup and sorting cows from calves went very well because of the excellent stockmanship and horsemanship skills that are prerequisite to be in the pens. Meghan and Dallas, Genex independent contractors, arrived with the supplies for installing the CIDRs. We were set up and ready to work cows on time. Paul Repenning a Colorado State University (CSU) vet student is assisting with the project. I quickly put him in charge of CIDR installation. Meghan kept track of CIDR guns being loaded, records and cow ID as we had a few culls to sort. Record keeping was easy with excellent ear tags and freeze brands with year reference letter followed by number on the left side of the animal. My job was to keep everything flowing and in rhythm. I set up a table on the opposite side for injecting the GnRH shot. Dallas kept cattle flowing from the Bud box through the alley headed into the hydraulic chute. Julie was operating the hydraulic chute while Mike and Danny continued with the cow/calf sorting process. It all flowed in rhythm and we were able to keep ahead of the supply of sorted cows. After 191 head, the calves needed to be paired up with the cull cows before synchronized cows were turned into a smaller pasture for the next week.

July 20 – Early morning roundup and sorting at the Rafter H location went smooth. Meghan and Dallas arrived for CIDR details and brought homemade breakfast burritos. Cattle flow was not working as we were trying to use an existing facility. We wanted to give the cows a different look than they would get on A.I. day with the portable double-alley and A.I. barn. After about 30 minutes, which seemed more like an hour, we changed to the double-alley and A.I. barn. Julie grilled hamburgers for lunch, and I started my journey back to Missouri.

Russ Princ, Genex Area Marketing Manager, coordinated the week’s activities while I returned to Missouri to take care of other projects. Meghan and Dallas assisted Russ with CIDRs going into groups three and four on Wednesday and Thursday followed by CIDR removal, ESTROTECT patches and PG shots on Friday for group one and Saturday on group two.

July 27 – 5 p.m. I began my travel back to Colorado and made it about half way. I was up early the next morning and arrived at the ranch around mid-afternoon. The cows were on the 7 day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol with heat detection and timed A.I. at 66 hours. This gave us the opportunity to A.I. about a quarter of the groups the evening before timed A.I.

July 28 – When I arrived at Livingston headquarters around 4 p.m., the crew already had 49 head sorted for evening A.I. After catching up with everyone Russ and I, along with Jesse French from CSU who helped us a couple days, finished the A.I. about 6 p.m. with everything going smoothly except for the rainwater which had soaked up in a low spot under the A.I. barn. Later that evening Justin, Mike and Julie’s son, moved the barn and used a tractor and loader to restore solid ground underneath. Julie had prepared a nice roast beef supper and then it was off to the cabin for the night.

July 29 – 5 a.m. The alarm sounded and so began another busy day. Russ was five minutes ahead of me and had my horse saddled for the day’s activities when I arrived. Group one cows and calves were in a 200-acre pasture within a mile of the corrals. Paul had rejoined us that morning after a weekend trip to New Mexico to participate in a polocrosse competition. His team was successful and he had a couple of scars to validate his participation. Paul described it as poor man’s polo played with lacrosse equipment.

Julie was mounted on her nice sorrel gelding as she gave us instructions on what works best for gathering this pasture. With five mounted riders, we split up and road the perimeter and started moving the herd toward the corrals. Julie and Russ road the south fence then guarded the high ground to prevent any from slipping up the ditches. Danny headed for the far east side as Paul and I gathered from the north fence. Everything went just as Julie had planned as the cattle were worked up the valley toward the corral. Soon all were in the corral and the sorting process began. Russ and I headed to the A.I. barn. In just a few minutes we had plenty to start while Mike and Danny finished the sorting. The cattle flow was excellent and Paul, Russ and I held up our end as we completed the morning task. With good cattle flow and three experienced technicians we could A.I. about 80 head per hour. After lunch it was time to trail group one down the road to a fresh pasture.

With group one complete it was time to head to the Rafter H location and sort off 55 head for the evening A.I. As we pulled in the yard we noticed around 30 head were already grouped in one big party and headed for the corral. The water tank is located inside the corral and our arrival time could not have been any better. Cow sorting and gathering is usually quite easy as they are preoccupied with all of the mounting activity. With a little patience you can usually hang back and it takes care of itself. With a little time to burn before A.I. we kicked back in the shade while Paul and his wife, Emily, gave Danny a demonstration on how to play polocrosse; that was quite entertaining.

5:00 p.m. It was time to A.I. the 55 head; Russ, Paul and I completed within the hour and I headed to headquarters with Mike to check on group one to make sure they were settled in to their new pasture. Julie fixed supper and we sat around and visited before I headed back to the cabin. I arrived at the cabin to find Russ, Danny and Justin camped on the front porch with the grill and music fired up. At about 11 p.m. it was time to call it a day.

July 30 – 6 a.m. It was a great day to be a cowboy! A light misty fog lay over the Rafter H as six of us mounted on horseback fanned out to gather 249 head. Cows and calves were just standing up and the calves had breakfast on their mind. This was a good day for Mike to share his cattle handling skills. As we sat horseback on a small hill some of the cows moved to the far corner as if there was a secret outlet. Mike’s plan was not to drive 249 head into a corral. Instead we

followed the cows to the far corner, fanned out and held them there for about five minutes. Mike had us step forward and apply a little more pressure and soon the lead cows identified themselves. They no longer wanted to be in the corner so we let them slowly file out to the right along the line fence. They traveled to the next corner and we repeated Mike’s technique. This time the lead cows headed to the corral with the rest of the herd following. There were just a few stragglers to pick up as we made it down and got the gates secured. This reminded me what my dad taught me 40 years ago. He would always gather a pasture by moving the cows to the far end then let them escape back in the direction he wanted them to go.

7:30 a.m. Appointment A.I. had arrived for 194 head in group two. Lorna Marshall, Genex U.S. Beef Programs Marketing Manager, provided us with additional help this busy day. As Danny and Mike started the cow/calf sorting process, the remainder of the crew got organized and started cows through the A.I. barn. After the sorting was complete it was time to get Danny some A.I. experience in the breeding barn. Danny had already received A.I. training but wanted some additional exposure to the Genex chute-side system. The morning ended smoothly as everything was completed before lunch.

July 31 – 6 a.m. Everyone was saddled and ready for roundup of group three for CIDR removal, PG injection and ESTROTECT application. This was a group of 187 first calf heifers in a 600-acre pasture two miles from headquarters. Heavy fog with visibility about 300 yards would make it a challenge locating and gathering in the hills. Thanks to another well thought out plan, roundup went smooth and on schedule. After completion of CIDR removal by late morning, we trailed the pairs to a smaller holding pasture. Again this left the afternoon for the crew to return to their normal ranch duties. A late afternoon shower produced a much needed 1/3-inch of dust settling rain.

August 1 – 6:00 a.m. At headquarters, Mike, Julie and Russ had horses saddled and ready to gather 137 head in group four for CIDR removal, PG injection and ESTROTECT application. This group of 3-year-olds was in 320 acres just south of the cabin which required moving them toward the southeast corner then riding down through the S curves. After group four's completion they were left close by to clean up grass paddocks and small pastures for the three days before A.I.

August 2 – 7 a.m. Russ was able to get a couple of days away from the project and participate in a team roping competition. I was able to meet with Lorna for a planning session on Friday morning and early afternoon. Friday evening we were back to A.I. 51 head of early responders on group three. Danny, Paul and I were joined by Mick Livingston, Mike’s brother, as he jumped in and bred his share Friday night and Saturday morning. Mick is a savvy veteran of many A.I. projects and his presence was greatly appreciated.

August 3 – 5:30 a.m. The 154 head left in group three were bred timed A.I. Roundup and sorting went smooth and again we were completed well before lunch. Russ and his wife Pam returned Saturday afternoon and provided an outstanding cookout for the evening. Paul and I were able to slip over to group four and A.I. the early responders.

August 4 – 5:30 a.m. Group four was bred timed A.I. this morning. Russ, Pam, Paul, Dallas and Danny worked the A.I. barn and I was able to work with Mike in the pens keeping the alley flowing. After completion we were treated to homemade cinnamon rolls and ice tea.

Stan Lock, Beef Large Herd Development Manager at Genex, is no stranger to synchronization and timed

artificial insemination (A.I.). One thing Stan is known for among his peers is always thinking outside the box, looking for a way to squeeze a few more pregnancies out of every project he works on.

In October 2011, Stan was working on a project at Four G's Ranch in Republic, Mo. using GenChoice™ semen. Using the HeatWatch® Estrus Detection System, they were breeding cows that had been synchronized using the 7-day CO-Synch + CIDR program. At timed A.I. (TAI) the cows were all given an injection of GnRH and bred using GenChoice male-sorted semen. It was also noted if the cow had exhibited estrus based on the HeatWatch system. Cows were then rebred approximately 20 hours later using GenChoice female-sorted semen. Dr. Scott Poock, Assistant Extension Professor at the University of Missouri, performed fetal sexing via ultrasound at approximately 70 days post A.I. What they found surprised them. A very high percentage of the cows that had not shown heat at TAI, and had been bred at TAI using male-sorted semen and then with female-sorted semen 20 hours later were found to be pregnant, and carrying heifer calves! This led Stan to the hypothesis that the cows which hadn’t shown heat at TAI (and GnRH) just needed a little more time to boost pregnancy rates.

The Science This hypothesis fits in very well with the science of the hormones of the estrous cycle. GnRH has been shown to cause ovulation 28 to 30 hours following injection. Sperm cells need to be in the reproductive tract approximately eight hours to undergo capacitation before they are capable of fertilizing the freshly ovulated egg. Delayed breeding of females that are not in heat at the time of GnRH injection helps to properly align the viable life of the ovum and sperm following insemination.

Although the original hypothesis was formed using sexed semen, two groups of researchers decided to see if it fit with the use of conventional semen.

The Results in Heifers Jordan Thomas and Dr. David Patterson, from the University of Missouri, designed a trial to test Stan’s theory, which Jordan called Split-Time Artificial Insemination. Jordan synchronized 931 heifers across three locations using the 14-day CIDR-PG protocol.

The heifers were assigned to one of two treatments. The heifers in the first group were inseminated at 66 hours post PG injection regardless of estrus expression. Estrus expression was determined using ESTROTECT™ patches that were applied at the time of PG injection on day 30. Estrus was defined as removal of >50% of the rub-off coating.

In the second treatment group, heifers expressing estrus prior to GnRH administration at 66 hours received A.I. concurrent with GnRH. Heifers failing to express estrus prior to GnRH administration were A.I. bred 20 hours after GnRH.

In treatment one, heifers that exhibited estrus had a 52% A.I. pregnancy rate, heifers not exhibiting estrus at TAI had a 34% A.I. pregnancy rate. In treatment two, heifers exhibiting estrus and A.I. bred at 66 hours had a 56% A.I. pregnancy rate, heifers that were not in estrus that underwent delayed breeding at 20 hours post GnRH had a 49% A.I. pregnancy rate. There was a 15% pregnancy rate advantage among non-estrous heifers across the two treatment groups. Overall pregnancy rates across both heifers exhibiting estrus and not exhibiting estrus were improved by the split-time breeding at 46% vs. 54% (see Table 1).

The research indicates that when using the 14-day CIDR-PG protocol, producers can attain higher heifer pregnancy rates by delaying insemination of non-estrous heifers through a Split-Time A.I. approach.

What About Cows? Jordan also identified 951 cows across nine locations to study the effects of Split-Time Artificial Insemination in mature cows. He set his experiment up similarly to the heifer trial except he used the 7-Day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol.

In treatment one, cows that exhibited estrus had a 65% A.I. pregnancy rate, cows not exhibiting estrus at TAI had a 45% A.I. pregnancy rate. In treatment two, cows exhibiting estrus and were A.I. bred at 60 to 66 hours had a 63% A.I. pregnancy rate. Cows that were not in estrus, that underwent delayed breeding at 20 hours post GnRH, had a 50% A.I. pregnancy rate.

The researchers saw a numeric advantage to delayed TAI for cows, however, not a statistical advantage. In addition, they did not observe an increase to overall pregnancy rates between the two protocols. Jordan Thomas explained that generally, the difference between two pregnancy rates must have a P value less than .05 to be considered statistically significant. Therefore, although there may appear to be a numeric advantage in delaying insemination of non-estrous cows, the data set does not offer a statistically significant improvement over a conventional Fixed-Time A.I. approach. At this time the University of Missouri is not recommending the use of Split-Time Artificial Insemination in cows.

Matthew Markwood and Dr. Jack Whittier from Colorado State University also wanted to study the effects of delayed breeding on mature cows. In the spring of 2013 they identified 1101 mature beef cows at five ranches in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska and synchronized them using a variation of the 7-Day CO-Synch + CIDR Protocol. Instead of TAI occurring at 60 to 66 hours and delayed breeding at 20 hours as it had in the University of Missouri trial, they performed TAI at 58 hours and delayed breeding at 18 hours for those not in heat.

Once again the researchers used ESTROTECT patches as a way to evaluate if the cow was in heat at 58 hours post CIDR removal. The cows were broken into four subgroups; half of all cows both with patches rubbed off at 58 hours post CIDR removal and not rubbed off were inseminated. The remaining half of both subgroups was inseminated 18 hours later at 76 hours post CIDR removal.

Delayed TAI in cows that had not shown heat based on the ESTROTECT patch at 58 hours post CIDR removal resulted in a 6.1% numeric improvement to pregnancy rates (45.6% vs. 51.7%) compared to those inseminated at 58 hours.

While the data from Colorado State University showed a numeric advantage to delayed breeding in mature cows, it too, did not show a statistical advantage. However, Dr. Whittier’s group intends to further study the positive trend they observed with their protocol. More research is needed in cows to fine tune the protocol and find if a true statistical advantage does exist. Dr. Whittier points out that a 5% potential increase in pregnancy rates in non-estrus cows (2 to 3% overall increase) is worth some level of risk, and given that the downside risk is low, may be a management strategy many producers will consider this A.I. season.

Dr. Whittier also noted that while pregnancy rates may be improved by using a delayed breeding strategy in mature cows, there are some other management considerations to be made because of the suckling calves. Dr. Whittier suggests that calves be separated from the cows when cows are worked through the chute for GnRH injection at 58 hours and then placed with the cows that were inseminated at that time. This allows for the second group of cows that are to be A.I. bred at 76 hours to be held separately until A.I. without the need to re-sort their calves.

ESTROTECT patches do add some additional upfront costs, and delayed breeding causes need for some additional time and labor. However, the chance to increase conception rate on the first day of the breeding season can more than make up for expenses in the form of more A.I. calves and a heavier, more uniform calf crop!

A full pipeline of young bulls helps to ensure a future supply of proven sires. At the same time, with the purchase of more young bulls comes the need for additional young sire sampling.

The goal of a progeny test program is to determine the true breeding value of a young bull as quickly as possible. This is best accomplished by mating young sires to multiple females in multiple environments. The resulting data (birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights, ultrasound/carcass, etc.) is submitted to the sire’s respective breed association and incorporated into the breed association database. Additional traits like sire fertility, feed efficiency and phenotypic evaluation are also part of the equation. Nearly all Genex sires will come through a progeny test program including semi-proven bulls that have some progeny data and the popular young sires that see heavy usage in their first couple seasons. Regardless of popularity in the marketplace or initial proof data, it’s important these bulls are sampled rapidly in multiple environments and under different management styles.

The Progeny Test – October 14, 2013Double M has artificially inseminated (A.I. bred) many of their cows for years and years, but last fall Genex asked them to do a progeny test and A.I. more cows than they normally would. Since all of the fall cows were on Clint's side of the freeway in December, it was easy to ride heat on them for a few days and then synchronize the cows that were left.

The way a progeny test works is Genex asks a ranch to use one reference sire (a bull that's proven and available for general use) and then three to four young sires (bulls that are newer to the sire lineup) and breed cows in a herd to that compilation of bulls. Once the calves are born, the ranch keeps track of all of the data (birth weights, calving ease, weaning weights, yearling weights, etc.) and then Genex tracks the carcasses; all the data is used to prove the genetic merit of a bull. They like to do progeny tests in bigger herds because it allows for better data statistically because the sample size is larger. That's why we A.I. bred more cows than normal, so they'd have a larger sample of calves.

The benefit to Double M is that cows that are A.I. bred usually have calves that are more uniform, they calve easier and have calves that grow faster since their genetics are usually superior to calves that are out of the herd bulls.

Double M bred the fall cows to Identity, Chisum, Full Power, Dillon, Pioneer and Final Answer. The calving period for the mature cows that were A.I. bred has passed, and so we can safely say that we didn't have to pull anything due to calf size and there is a stout group of fast growing calves out on the meadows right now! Success all around.

For reference, the cows are primarily Angus & SimAngus™ commercial cows that run on irrigated native pasture. Their calves at side were born in mid-late September.

Enter The Real Heroes – Genex Progeny Test Herds! Genex works with some of the industry’s best ranchers to prove young sires. These cattlemen, both registered and commercial producers, work together with Genex to breed their cows and heifers to Genex young sires and proven sires used for reference. Then, they provide fertility, performance and ultrasound/carcass data on the resulting calf crop.

What does it take to be a Genex progeny test herd? Excellent records are imperative. Each calf should be tagged and weighed at birth. In addition, weaning and yearling weights need to be recorded at the proper times. Data must be organized and submitted in a timely fashion; progeny test herds must be willing to go above and beyond the call of duty!

A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals. $EN savings include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.$W: Weaned Calf Value (Angus) – The expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit, expressed in $/head. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.$F: Feedlot Value (Angus) – Calculates a $/head difference in expected progeny performance for post weaning merit. $F uses WW and YW EPDs along with trait inter-relationships. Typical feedlot gain value, feed consumption and cost differences are accounted for in the final calculations.$G: Grid Value (Angus) – Combines quality grade and yield grade attributes, and is calculated for animals with carcass EPDs, ultrasound EPDs or both types of EPDs. BMI$: Baldy Maternal Index (Hereford) – An index to maximize profit for commercial cow/calf producers who use Hereford bulls in rotational crossbreeding programs on Angus-based cows and heifers. Retained ownership of calves is assumed, with fed cattle marketed on a Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) pricing grid. CEZ$: Calving EZ Index (Hereford) – Similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are mated only to yearling heifers. Increased emphasis on CE and MCE compared with the other index BII$: Brahman Influence Index (Hereford) – This index is similar to BMI$, except Hereford bulls are used in rotational crossing with Brahman rather than Angus. S I R E I N F O R M A T I O NGenetic Defects In the last couple of years several genetic defects have been identified in Angus and other breeds, defects which include Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH), Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA), Developmental Duplication (DD) and Osteopetrosis (OS). It is important for A.I. companies to be vigilant concerning genetic defects as the opportunity to increase the frequency of these negative traits on the population can be significant. With bulls selling 50 to 100,000 units, a single carrier bull can widely spread a genetic problem. Genex has worked hard to ensure this does not happen. All Genex bulls listed in this directory have either been tested or are known free by pedigree for the major genetic defects unless otherwise stated.AM: Arthrogryposis Multiplex “Curly Calf” – A recessive lethal mutation resulting from gene deletion causing abnormal development in utero.CA: Contractural Arachnodactyly “Fawn Calf” – An inherited simple recessive mutation resulting from gene deletion causing reduced elasticity of the connective tissue of muscle.D2: Dwarfism – A recessive mutation on a single chromosome resulting in a specific strain of dwarfism.DD: Developmental Duplication – The majority of calves exhibiting DD are born with additional limbs, usually duplication of the front legs and originating from the neck or shoulder region.HY: Hypotrichosis “Hairlessness” – A recessive mutation resulting in partial to almost complete lack of hair on calves.IE: Idiopathic Epilepsy – A simple recessive gene resulting in a neurological disorder causing seizures. MA: Alpha–Mannosidosis – An inherited and lethal lysosomal storage disease noticed prior to animals reaching sexual maturity; present signs of severe progressive neurological disease. NH: Neuropathic Hydrocephalus “Water Head” – A lethal recessive mutation within a gene involved in development and maintenance of central nervous system tissue.

OS: Osteopetrosis “Marble Bone Disease” – A lethal mutation in a gene necessary for bone remodeling during development causing premature birth.PHA: Pulmonary Hypoplasia with Anasarca – A lethal recessive mutation resulting in underdeveloped lungs and fluid retention. TH: Tibial Hemimelia – A lethal recessive mutation resulting in multiple congenital defects such as absence of the tibia and abdominal hernias.Heterozygous Polled – Polled bulls that carry one horned gene. May sire calves with horns when mated to cows carrying the horned gene.Homozygous Polled – Bulls with a 99.9 percent probability of being homozygous polled, having been DNA tested or test-mated to horned and heterozygous polled cows. Expect these bulls to sire all polled calves.Inconclusive DNA test – Bull was tested, but the lab was unable to determine whether the animal is homozygous or heterozygous.Double Polled – Young, unproven sires whose parents are both polled.Heterozygous Black – Black bulls that carry one red gene. Expect 50 percent black calves when the bull is mated to non-diluted red cows.Homozygous Black – Bulls with a 99.9 percent probability of producing all black calves when mated to non–diluted red and black cows.Dilution Gene – Cattle carrying the dilution gene will be gray, red or yellow. Non–dilutor cattle will appear black or darker red.

A M E S S A G E F R O M A L K U C K As you view the outstanding sires in the 2014 Beef Genetic Management Guide, you will see a common theme – balance; this is the core of our beef program. Bulls that provide growth without excessive birth weight, bulls that provide calving ease with adequate growth, and bulls that sire females that can raise a calf, breed back every year and remain in the herd for many years with minimum problems. We have accomplished this through a balance between the science of cattle breeding and good old fashioned cow sense. Anyone can read the EPDs on bulls, and if one is interested in having the highest rankings for growth or the highest rankings in carcass traits, can select for those traits. However, progress often comes at the expense of other traits and profitability. Longevity in trouble-free cows, that breed back each year and on time, is an important aspect of profitability. That’s where cow sense comes into the picture – some of the traits that enhance profitability do not have EPDs!

What are the results of our efforts in combining cow sense with science? If sales are any indicator, and the marketplace is usually our best critic, we have done well! Genex is home to the No. 1 registration sires in four breeds: Angus, Red Angus, Simmental and Hereford. It is not very often that one stud dominates the major breeds in registrations across the board!
