Business Intelligence: A Definition We define Business Intelligence (BI) as “Knowledge gained through the access and analysis of business

information.”

Business Intelligence tools and technologies include query and reporting, OLAP (on-line analytical

processing), data mining and advanced analytics, end-user tools for ad hoc query and analysis, and

dashboards for performance monitoring.

Introduction This year we celebrate the seventh anniversary of Dresner Advisory Services! Our thanks to all of you

that have been with us along the way—encouraging and challenging us!

Since our founding in 2007, we have strived to offer a fresh, real-world and alternative perspective on the

business intelligence (BI) market. We hope that you agree that we not only have succeeded in doing so

but have continued to “raise the bar”—offering increasingly compelling research and greater value with

each successive year!

To date, the Wisdom of Crowds family of reports remains unique in that it is the only comprehensive

research on BI usage and trends from the viewpoint of end users. By looking first hand at the experience

of IT and business users as well as industry implementation consultants, we can better provide you, our

readers, with the in-depth knowledge of the drivers of BI, where and how companies use BI, and what

likely will be the next trends on the horizon.

Since we began publishing industry research reports, we have expanded from only two reports in 2010 to

twelve reports in 2014. This includes Location Intelligence, Cloud BI (3rd

annual), Collaborative BI (3rd

annual), our flagship Wisdom of Crowds® BI Market Study (5

th annual), BI Competency Center, Advanced

& Predictive Analytics, Healthcare, BI Emerging Technologies (2nd

annual) and Mobile Computing /

Mobile BI Market Study (6th annual).

To this end, we’ve added more resources to Dresner Advisory Services including the additions of a

research director, senior editor and statistician.

For this, our second SME market study report, we created a focused, detailed report examining business

intelligence in small and mid-sized organizations. In particular, we consider how their deployments and

views differ from each other and from larger organizations. Also included are SME-specific vendor

rankings and a buyer’s guide for 21 different BI software vendors.

In closing, we’re very excited about both the market and our ability to continue to add substantial

perspective and value to it!

Thanks for your support!

Best,

Howard Dresner Chief Research Officer Dresner Advisory Services

Survey Method and Data Collection For this SME study, we sampled different subsets of the 2014 Wisdom of Crowds

Business Intelligence Market Survey. Dresner Advisory Services defines “Small

Enterprise” as an organization with between one and 100 employees; “Mid-Sized

Enterprise” an organization with between 101 and 1,000 employees; and “Large

Enterprise” as an organization with more than 1,000 employees. The study was

constructed from a survey instrument to collect data and used social media and crowd-

sourcing techniques to recruit participants.

Data Collection

A total of 717 surveys (versus 523 in 2013) were submitted by Small and Mid-Sized

(SME) organizations. This report focuses on the responses of those SME organizations

and draws comparisons between their responses and those of the full sample.

Vendor/Market Categories For the purposes of this SME report, we utilize five different BI industry sub-categories

in which to group vendors and analyze market behavior and direction. As in 2013 these

include “Emerging,” “High Growth,” “Large Established Pure Play,” “Specialized” and

“Titan” vendors.

Emerging BI vendors are typically younger than other categories and offer unique and

often innovative business models, technologies, and/or services. This category

includes: Adaptive Insights, Birst, GoodData, Jaspersoft *, and Jedox.

High-Growth BI vendors have achieved critical mass in the market and are growing at

an extremely high rate—well above the industry average. For 2014, vendors include

Logi Analytics, Pentaho, Tableau, and TIBCO.

Large Established Pure-Play BI vendors predominately focus upon business

intelligence software and services, typically have been in business for 15 or more years,

and have well-established customer bases and revenue streams. Several are publicly

held concerns. These include Actuate, Information Builders, and Qlik.

Specialized BI vendors are established (10+ years old), focused on a specific market

segment (e.g., vertical industry), and are substantially smaller than Large Established

Pure Plays. Included in this category are Dimensional Insight, Dundas, Jinfonet,

Klipfolio, Phocus, and Targit.

Titans are the largest vendors, with extensive product and service offerings—including

business intelligence. In all cases these vendors acquired business intelligence

vendors. Included in this category are IBM, Microsoft, and SAP.

*Jaspersoft was acquired by Tibco after data collection had been completed.

Executive Summary

SME top technology priorities include dashboards and end-user self-service. Smaller

organizations place a lower priority upon data warehouses but have more interest in

cloud BI than large organizations.

Executive management and sales are the strongest functional drivers at SMEs and

slightly more so than at large enterprises. SMEs are slightly less likely to be driven

by finance, operations, BICC, or supply chain functions.

Smaller enterprises are more likely to focus upon growth in revenues and

competitive advantage as objectives for business intelligence while large

organizations focus more on operational efficiency.

Though overall penetration remains low in 2014, SMEs report higher business

intelligence penetration than large organizations. Smaller organizations report higher

penetration than their mid-sized counterparts.

There is an inverse relationship between organization size and perceived success

with business intelligence with smaller organizations reporting success more often

than larger ones.

Small and medium-sized enterprises hold a high opinion of the state of data

governance within their organizations with more than one-third of small enterprises

claiming governance at the level of “data as truth.”

SMEs consider themselves slightly more capable in their ability to act on insights

employing closed loop processes or ad hoc actions based on BI insights. This is in

contrast to larger enterprises where sharing tends to be less well coordinated.

Study Demographics The respondents studied in this SME survey provide a cross-section of data by

geography, function, organization size, and vertical industries. We believe this supports

a representative sample and indicator of true market dynamics. We constructed cross-

tab analyses using these demographics to identify and illustrate important industry

trends.

Geography

Fifty-one percent of respondents are located in North America (which includes the

United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico). EMEA organizations represent 30 percent of

respondents (up from 24 percent in 2013). Asia Pacific (13 percent) and Latin America

(five percent) are the other regions represented.

Functions

Information technology (33 percent) and Executive Management (26 percent) account

for the highest among roles represented in the study. Eleven percent represent the

BICC, which in the SME market can include dedicated Business Intelligence resources

as well as formal organizational departments (fig. 3). Finance, operations, sales and

marketing are represented in percentages similar to last year’s study.

This distribution across functions enables us to develop analyses comparing and

contrasting the plans and priorities of the different departments within organizations.

Analysis and Trends This report describes the Small and Mid-Sized Enterprise market for Business

Intelligence by its own characteristics, drivers, and trends, and also by how it compares

to the large enterprise market.

For 2014 we have data in multiple areas of user trends. For SMEs we were first

interested to understand their history of experience with Business Intelligence, their

uptake of cloud BI providers, and changing priorities year over year. As in the larger

Wisdom of Crowds study, we collected and analyzed data for SMEs surrounding

functions driving Business Intelligence, goals/objectives for BI, targeted user roles,

current penetration, and future plans for Business Intelligence deployment and

organizational success.

How SMEs Differ

Technology Priorities Changing

Small and medium-sized enterprises prioritize a wide span of BI technologies and

priorities much like larger organizations do (fig. 5). Top priorities in common are

dashboards and end user self-service. But smaller organizations do not prioritize data

warehouses as often as large organizations and show notably greater interest in

software as a service and cloud than large organizations. Smaller organizations are less

likely to embrace big data and data mining but are more interested in open source

software and social BI.

Across all priorities, SME interest in open source software was most increased in 2014

(fig. 6). Open source and software as a service / cloud were the only two categories of

notably increased priority for all organizations in 2014. Among many decliners, text

analytics, social media, mobile device support, and advanced visualization were the

most dampened priorities for SMEs. Perhaps through awareness or experience,

complex event processing and search-based interface were more deemphasized by

large than by smaller organizations.

Departments/Functions Driving Business Intelligence

The 2014 survey looks at the functions that drive Business Intelligence initiatives within

the organization. For each function, we asked respondents to specify whether it drives

Business Intelligence “always,” “often,” “sometimes,” “rarely,” or “never.” We used this to

create a weighted average on a zero-to-five scale.

Departmental Drivers

Executive management and sales are the strongest functional drivers at SMEs and

slightly more so than at large enterprises (fig. 7). As might befit their structure, SMEs

are slightly less likely to be driven by finance, operations, BICC, or supply chain

functions.

User Roles Targeted for Business Intelligence

We asked which functions/roles are targeted for automation with Business Intelligence

solutions. Respondents were able to designate roles as either “Primary,” “Secondary,”

or “Not Applicable.” Among all organizations sampled, the majority prioritized (in order)

Executives, Middle Managers, Line Managers, Individuals, Customers, and then

Suppliers last.

Small and mid-sized enterprises target executives more often than their large-enterprise

peers (fig. 8). Small organizations are noticeably more likely to target customers than

mid-size and large organizations. Conversely, targeting of middle managers and line

managers increases with organization size. This may reflect the structure of

management ranks that grow along with employee headcount. In the same vein, small

and mid-sized organizations are less likely to target individual contributors and

professionals.

Objectives for Business Intelligence

BI objectives as described in the survey are mostly consistent across organizations of

all sizes (fig. 9). As in years past, “better decision making” is the objective organizations

adhere to most universally. As organization size increases, respondents are less likely

to cite revenue growth, competitive advantage, or customer service as BI objectives.

Meanwhile, large organizations focus more on operational efficiency which may reflect

the number and/or complexity of business processes.

Among all organizations, revenue growth and competitive advantage are the two net

positive gainers among BI objectives in 2014 (fig. 10). Compared to the full sample,

small and mid-sized organizations do not show greater positive sentiment year over

year toward any of the stated BI objectives and are slightly more negative overall. While

sentiment toward revenue growth and better competitive advantage increased, it did so

only slightly. Negative sentiment tilted slightly more than the full sample against better

decision making and somewhat more against improved operational efficiency.

Business Intelligence Objectives by Function

Better decision making is the top SME BI objective in 2014 across all functions (fig. 11).

Sales and marketing predictably have the highest affinity toward revenue growth;

Finance is more tilted toward operational efficiency (and by extension, cost

containment). SME executives are mostly consistent toward secondary and tertiary BI

objectives. Customer service is the trailing BI objective across all functions.

Penetration of Business Intelligence

Though overall penetration remains low in 2014, SMEs report higher penetration than

large organizations (fig. 12). Less than one-fourth of small and less than 40 percent of

medium-sized organizations report the lowest level of penetration (compared to almost

half of large organizations). While it may be a matter of lower headcount and more

operational awareness, a significantly higher number of small organizations report the

second highest or highest level (81 percent or more) of BI penetration than mid-sized or

large organizations.

Small and mid-sized organizations expect to significantly counter low BI penetration

levels in near and long-term time frames (fig. 13). Small organizations will outperform

medium-sized organizations at improving penetration in the near and midterm. Three

years from now, 30 to 40 percent of SMEs expect the highest level (81 percent or more)

of BI penetration.

SME Success with Business Intelligence

The organizational tendency to claim complete BI success declines with organization

size (fig. 14). Small organizations are the most likely to agree completely that their BI

programs and projects have been successful. However, mid-sized and large

organizations are more likely to have tempered views of BI success, both positive and

negative. Less than five percent of organizations of any size disagree completely that

their BI initiatives have been successful.

State of Data

Small and medium-sized enterprises tend to have a higher opinion of the state of data

governance within their organizations (fig. 15). Well more than one-third of small

enterprises have the highest view of their governance being at the level of “data as

truth.” Close to 40 percent or more SMEs claim the second-highest level in a common

view of enterprise data. Large organizations are more likely to report consistent

department level data or multiple inconsistent data sources.

Action on Insight

In 2014 we began data collection regarding “Action on Insight,” the degree to which

organizations take data into use beyond passive reporting/observation. As might be

expected, SMEs consider themselves slightly more responsive in their ability to execute

with closed loop processes or ad hoc actions based on BI insights (fig. 16). Large

organizations are slightly more likely to report uncoordinated actions, though only five

percent or fewer of all organizations say insights are “rarely leveraged.”

SME Vendor Stacked Rankings In this section we offer stacked rankings of Business Intelligence software vendors

supporting Small and Mid-Sized Enterprises. We ranked vendors using 33 different

criteria, on a five-point scale for each. Criteria covered sales /acquisition experience (8

criteria), value for price paid (1), quality and usefulness of product (12), quality of

technical support (5), quality and value of consulting services (5), whether vendor is

recommended (1), and integrity (1). The result is a stacked ranking with an average

score for every one of the seven categories and an overall average score for each

vendor.

As we begin to explore vendor performance in more detail, it’s important to understand

the scale that we used in scoring the industry and vendors:

5.0 = Excellent

4.0 = Very good

3.0 = Adequate

2.0 = Poor

1.0 = Very poor

As in 2013, market segments include the “Titans,” “Large Established Pure-Play,”

“Emerging,” “High-Growth” and Specialized” vendors.

Within each segment, vendors have similar traits and, as a result, similar score-average

ranges. So, while comparisons can (and no doubt will) be made between these sub-

segment “peer groups,” it’s not always a reasonable comparison.

Based on our scoring methodology, all vendors performed at a level that is considered

more than “adequate” for all categories of criteria.

*Please note that “Average Score” is the mathematical mean of all items included in

vendor ratings. Each column in the chart represents a scale consisting of varying

numbers of items. (For example "Sales" is a scale consisting of eight items, while

"value" for price is a single item). As such, each column is weighted differently (based

upon the number of items represented and the number of respondents rating those

items) in calculating the overall average rating. The Average Score cannot be calculated

by simply averaging across the subscale scores.
