HSCC 2014� This past competition in Indianapolis was

the best experience on getting needed equipment.

HSCC PC Image Setup

� This year, I received 2 notebooks 2 weeks before the competition.

� Next year, I hope to still get Windows 7 64-� Next year, I hope to still get Windows 7 64-bit. This will depend on if Microsoft is still offering downgrade license. This will need a conformation early.

� I wipe the notebook, re-install Windows, drivers, service pack(s), run Windows Update.

I install software on the root of c:\ Ex. c:\apache

I install what is included in the standard install

I use the version of software I download at the first of the year

The image is tested by me and tech support volunteersvolunteers

Southern Minnesota, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Charlotte were my testers and tech support this year.

I will be looking for volunteers for next year

During the Competition

I have tech support volunteers on-call for issues that judges or I cannot solve

If using IDEs, show students how to run If using IDEs, show students how to run their project without the IDE if they have problems. This rules out the IDE as the issue

Remind students the last change is usually what broke the program

After the Competition

� I will also have a copy at the Coordinator’s meeting after the competition

During Presentations

The main presentation issue I noticed is some students try to type/drive the laptop while standing up. Sitting down laptop while standing up. Sitting down while typing/driving the laptop is much easier than standing.

Steps to take before the Competition

� Go through a Windows 7 or Windows 8 install

� Go through installing Window Service Go through installing Window Service packs and using Windows update service

� Go through installing MySQL and installing your technology, so students know how to configure their environments


� Know how to enable and start services for your technology

� Have the services turned off before � Have the services turned off before each training session

� Know how to bring up a web page

� Know 2 ways to connect to the database


� Know 2 ways to access documentation

� One, on root of C:\documentation and

� Two, from what the technology installs

� Work on project management, team work, time management, presentation skills, debugging, and problem solving skills
