Humane Societyrsquos Board of Directors in the 1970s During that time they fostered young animals found them loving homes and helped with community events Once when a soon-to-be-mother cat found her way to the couplersquos doorstep Lois took it upon herself to care for mother and babies ultimately finding good homes for them all One of those good homes was with Lois herself Mother Cat (henceforth named MC) and one of the babies Streak stayed to live in the house on Park Point

Lois gave so much to companion animals and they gave back to her providing comfort and companionship in her later years She adopted her last dog Molly from Animal Allies She visited the shelter several times looking for that special companion but in the end it was Molly who chose her Although they had several years together Lois knew Molly would most likely need a new family to care for her in case of Loisrsquos passing so she arranged for Molly to have a happy home where her tail still wags

Lois believed in educating the public about the importance of making good decisions for your pets She believed every companion animal deserves quality care and a good home To further that cause Lois has left her very generous bequest to Animal Allies Kind gracious people like Lois make the world a better place for people and for pets

A GIFT OF HEART AND HOME April 2013

The local animal welfare community lost a passionate supporter when Lois deWaard Shabatura passed away on July 17 2012

For more than fifty years Lois was a volunteer and supporter of Animal Allies Humane Society In her final good deed she ensured a lifetime of loving care to countless animals by bequeathing $211000 to Animal Allies The bequest was

received in June this year

Lois was born and raised in Minneapolis where her love of animals began After graduating from the University of Minnesota she married Eugene H Shabatura in 1942 Lois and ldquoShabrdquo moved to Duluth in 1951 where they lived on Park Point and devoted their lives to the four-legged friends that were their joy and passion

Lois was a member of the Duluth Kennel Club and the

Twin Ports Dog Training Club She and Shab bred happy healthy Dachshunds They also mentored and inspired young people interested in showing and training dogs Shab traveled often as an American Kennel Club judge

Lois always had a dog ndash or two or three ndash especially close to her heart A family friend recalls that every Thanksgiving when Lois and Shab pulled into the driveway and opened their car doors a whirlwind of bouncing eager dogs bounded out ready join the festivities with the rest of the family

Besides being committed to their own animals and their breeding operation Lois and Shab helped many homeless cats and dogs who had nowhere to turn They each served on Animal Allies

On June 30 I retired as the Executive Director of Animal Allies Humane Society A search is now underway to find a successor who will be put at the helm of this wonderful organization In

the meantime the shelter will be in capable hands as Jim Stauber longtime board member and animal welfare advocate is acting as Interim Executive Director

When I first started at Animal Allies in 2010 I remember marveling at the passion every volunteer and employee felt for the organizationrsquos mission And while staff and volunteers come and go that passion ndash and the importance of our mission ndash remains constant

I also remember that it didnrsquot take long after starting at Animal Allies to find myself a new four-legged companion (even though I wasnrsquot looking for one) My dog Chantey arrived at the shelter about the same time as I did

I admired the cream-colored Cocker Spaniel from a distance for a while One day I reported to work to find the little dog in my office with a note that read ldquoTake me home Dadrdquo As I looked into her big brown eyes I experienced the magical connection felt by so many adopters before me My wife and I brought her home that very day

We named her Chantey (from the French chanter ldquoto singrdquo) because my wife loves music and I love boats sea chanteys were sung by sailors to keep the crew in rhythm as they pulled on oars or rigging And it turned out to fit her well because Chantey has become the perfect boat dog She loves standing on the bow with her nose pointing into the scent-filled wind She loves the adventure of being out on the big lake trying to peer over the waves to see where we are going next

Where she and I are going next we donrsquot yet know but I guarantee there will be a smile on my face and a wag in her tail

Where is Animal Allies going next The organization has accomplished so much achieving zero euthanasia of healthy animals for over four years implementing progressive adoption and spayneuter programs and building a world-class shelter where all homeless pets are given high-quality care But there are challenges ahead maintaining zero euthanasia controlling pet overpopulation and charting a course towards even greater services to homeless pets

There is a fantastic crew of staff and volunteers at Animal Allies Achieving our goals takes vigilance and hard work We need continuous community support to propel this organization on to its next adventure Your gifts of time talent and treasure are crucial to give homeless pets a chance to find a loving family

As you sail into the future it is my wish that all involved in this worthy cause pull on the oars together and think of a Chantey

to march on A short time later the rain started letting up and walkers began to trickle in the front gate for the festivities As the walk began staff and volunteers were humbled by the number of people who refused to be rained out and walked in spite of the soggy weather Thank you to all who braved the elements to participate In spite of these hardy supporters attendance was down from previous years and we need your help to meet our fundraising goal for this event

POPPY AN ADOPTION SUCCESS STORY

Poppyrsquos coat is a light tan color and when curled up on a lap he looks like a very small fawn Staff and volunteers at Animal Allies had ample opportunity to observe this because soon after arriving at the shelter the tiny thirteen-year-old Chihuahua became the official office lap dog He was the quietest animal silently watching us with concerned black eyes Sometimes when one of his favorite Dog Buddy volunteers held him and scratched under his chin Poppy would let out a low groan of contentment like a door creaking closed very slowly That was the only noise he ever made Poppy is an old

COMMUNITY SUPPORT RAIN OR SHINE

When staff and volunteers gathered at Bayfront Festival Park to prepare for the 2014 Walk for Animals on Saturday June 7 they were met with gray skies steady rain and the rumble of thunder in the distance They began to exchange worried looks

ldquoI remember standing under the tent huddled over my phone trying to get an updated weather forecastrdquo said Kim Holland Fundraising Events Manager at Animal Allies ldquoWe put so much

work into this event I was just hoping so badly we wouldnrsquot have

to cancel but we also needed to make sure all our participants would be saferdquo

With a forecast promising the rain would pass and perhaps a glimpse of clear sky on the horizon the decision was made

ing fresh gravel The students dug right in happy to help in whatever way needed and were excited to see the difference they could make with a team effort

ldquoThe students learned that it takes help from everyone to make a difference and that volunteering is something they should continue to do for the rest of their livesrdquo said Danovsky ldquoThere are so many benefits to pet ownership for both the pet and the people I think that kids idealize pet ownership and they need to learn that owning a pet is a big responsibility but it can be fun toordquo

The students had a great time volunteering and Animal Allies greatly appreciated the improvements they made to the shelterrsquos trail system

ldquoEveryone with the Scott Anderson Leadership Forum was wonderful to work withrdquo said Becky Mathiowetz Volunteer Coordinator for Animal Allies ldquoWithout the help of groups like these Animal Allies would not be able to accomplish these types of special projects Their assistance and hard work frees up our staff to care for the animals while these important projects are donerdquo

This summer Animal Allies welcomed a group of students from the Scott D Anderson Leadership Forum for a day of volunteering

The Scott D Anderson Leadership Foundation was created by the parents of Scott Anderson a Duluthian who lost his life during a flight test in 1999 This fund of the Duluth-Superior Area Community Foundation is dedicated to sponsoring high-quality value-based leadership training opportunities for young people

The Leadership Forum works with students from twelve local high schools who are interested in developing themselves by exploring their own assets and leadership potential during a weeklong camp at UMD The camp gives students the opportunity to learn what it means to lead and how to do it well

ldquoWe focus a lot on character qualities relationship build-ing and community servicerdquo said Tracy Danovsky the team leader responsible for the studentsrsquo service projects during the camp ldquoThe hope is that our students will leave with the confi-dence in themselves to make our commu-nity a better place to live for allrdquo

On the Wednesday of the camp ten groups of students are sent into the community to perform a service project This year one group visited Animal Allies to learn the ins and outs of caring for shelter animals

The students quickly learned how much time and effort goes into taking care of the animals and the facility Rather than cuddling puppies and kittens they worked on a project to improve the shelterrsquos walking trails by spread-

Through June this year volunteers have donated nearly 12000 hours of their time ndash the equivalent of 13 full time employees A round of applause to our Dog and Cat Buddies Interns BARC trainers Fosters Docents Humane Education Volunteers Office Assistants Board and Committee Members and Special Event and Community Outreach Volunteers We appreciate all that each and every one of you has done for the animals in the community Together we have found homes for almost 800 animals so far in 2014

CAN YOU HELP Love Kittens Each year fosters help us save the lives of hundreds of animals Right now we have a great need for fosters for bottle fed kittens The summer is our busiest time of year for new litters and young kittens often come into the shelter without a mother Fostering orphan kittens requires commitment and responsibility but you will be rewarded by knowing your efforts give those kittens the chance to live a full and happy life Please consider helping us today

Help Our Animals Find Their ldquoFureverrdquo Home DocentsShelter Greeters are needed Tuesday through Sunday from Noon to 6pm to greet visitors give tours of the shelter answer questions and help potential adopters find a new family member

Hitting that Summer Lull Get out and enjoy the fresh air with the dogs We are looking for Dog Buddies for walks playgroups and enrichment activities from 8am to 4pm on Mondays and 8am to 6pm Tuesday through Sunday Get in your daily workout while helping your canine friends We especially need early morning and late afternoon help

man and when he arrived at the shelter his teeth proved his age While at the shelter he underwent surgery to have many of his teeth removed and his jaw wired to correct a slight break While he recovered from the surgery the wire never seemed to bother him but it made his mouth droop to the right giving him a characteristic sideways look

This calm dog did surprise the staff once Poppy was dozing in his habitual chair when a cat came into the office for a visit When Poppy realized he was not alone he suddenly leapt up and trotted after the cat on his little bow legs sniffing eagerly and wagging his tail The cat of course showed no interest whatsoever

Volunteers and staff at Animal Allies fell in love with Poppyrsquos quiet ways and

hoped that he would find a family to give him the companionship he so loved Itrsquos often harder to find homes for senior animals but when Jewel came in to see him she seemed as taken with Poppy as we were She introduced him to her own little Chihuahua Stella who looked like Poppyrsquos twin Within an hour Poppy was on his way to his forever home

Jewel has rescued many animals whose age health or behavior made them hard to adopt She says that Poppy has joined a ldquohappy well-balanced packrdquo that includes Stella Yorkie mixes Mimzy and Teddy a ShepherdHusky mix a Collie and a yellow Lab Best of all Poppy now has two cat brothers ldquoHe sleeps on the bed right next

This summer exceptional photographer and longtime animal welfare advocate Trudy Vrieze came up with a creative way to benefit shelter animals She produced a calendar featuring prominent Duluth men posing with some fabulous felines challenging the preconception that only a dog can be a manrsquos best friend

These great calendars are now available for $17 at the Duluth locations listed on the right Proceeds from sales will be donated to Animal Allies Humane Society

On June 30 I retired as the Executive Director of Animal Allies Humane Society A search is now underway to find a successor who will be put at the helm of this wonderful organization In

the meantime the shelter will be in capable hands as Jim Stauber longtime board member and animal welfare advocate is acting as Interim Executive Director

When I first started at Animal Allies in 2010 I remember marveling at the passion every volunteer and employee felt for the organizationrsquos mission And while staff and volunteers come and go that passion ndash and the importance of our mission ndash remains constant

I also remember that it didnrsquot take long after starting at Animal Allies to find myself a new four-legged companion (even though I wasnrsquot looking for one) My dog Chantey arrived at the shelter about the same time as I did

I admired the cream-colored Cocker Spaniel from a distance for a while One day I reported to work to find the little dog in my office with a note that read ldquoTake me home Dadrdquo As I looked into her big brown eyes I experienced the magical connection felt by so many adopters before me My wife and I brought her home that very day

We named her Chantey (from the French chanter ldquoto singrdquo) because my wife loves music and I love boats sea chanteys were sung by sailors to keep the crew in rhythm as they pulled on oars or rigging And it turned out to fit her well because Chantey has become the perfect boat dog She loves standing on the bow with her nose pointing into the scent-filled wind She loves the adventure of being out on the big lake trying to peer over the waves to see where we are going next

Where she and I are going next we donrsquot yet know but I guarantee there will be a smile on my face and a wag in her tail

Where is Animal Allies going next The organization has accomplished so much achieving zero euthanasia of healthy animals for over four years implementing progressive adoption and spayneuter programs and building a world-class shelter where all homeless pets are given high-quality care But there are challenges ahead maintaining zero euthanasia controlling pet overpopulation and charting a course towards even greater services to homeless pets

There is a fantastic crew of staff and volunteers at Animal Allies Achieving our goals takes vigilance and hard work We need continuous community support to propel this organization on to its next adventure Your gifts of time talent and treasure are crucial to give homeless pets a chance to find a loving family

As you sail into the future it is my wish that all involved in this worthy cause pull on the oars together and think of a Chantey
