Children are born learning and the earliest skills they acquire form the building blocks for later success. This presentation highlights the importance of interactions and early relationships as the context that fosters all learning. Participants will identify the ingredients of everyday social interactions that facilitate learning and development, understand how experiences influence the brain’s physical development, and appreciate how children’s earliest skills build over time to produce indicators of school readiness and later success. BRING “IN-SERVICE TRAINING” TO YOUR CENTERAn education option for earlylearning professionalsThe Child Care Action Council is pleased to offer an “in-service training” program. Through this program, center directors arrange for classes to be held at their facilities for all of their staff. Many centers already take advantage of this opportunity.

Classes taught by MERIT-approved trainers are available on a wide variety of topics and STARS hours are provided. The cost of training varies based on location, but averages about $5.00 per hour per person, plus a 10% administrative fee and, at times, a mileage stipend. There are minimum fees, so these classes are most economical for centers of at least 12 staff members. Centers are required to pay CCAC’s fee, but may choose to collect money from staff members in order to pay that fee.

The most widely requested training topics are those that specifically support success in Early Achievers. Some popular titles are listed below. For more information, contact Connie Dougherty at (360) 786-8907, ext. 108.

In-service training that specifically supports Early Achievers includes:

Environment Support: • Using the Environment Rating Scales • Routines and Hygiene Using the Environment Rating Scales• Making the Most of Blocks and Dramatic Play

Interactions (CLASS) Support: • Using “Teacher Talk” to Support Instruction• Behavior Management in High Quality Care

Curriculum Support:• Refining Your Curriculum
