2014 Annual Report
2 Preservation of the Res, Inc. Annual Report
The ResThe Res is a youth and nature preserve located on the east side of Mishawaka, Indiana. Originally founded in 1920 as a Boy Scout Reservation, The Res is now owned by the non-profit organization, The Preservation of the Res, Inc. The Board of Directors consists of members who represent the local community, Friends of The Res, and the Charter Members of The Preservation of the Res, Inc.
The Res is a sanctuary not only for the flora and fauna that thrive here, but also for all those who leave their hectic lives to enjoy The Res’ tranquility and beauty. Surrounded by urban uses, the heavily wooded grounds are habitat to a wide variety of birds, animals, and wild flowers.
Our MissionThe Res is dedicated to the preservation of a natural place where outdoor education and recreation work side by side to establish an outdoor ethic in our community, especially among our youth, and to enhance the wonders of nature in us all. In other words: “Where recreation and education meet nature.”

Rangers’ Report2014 was our second year as Ranger team for The Res! This spring, The Res hosted all of the 4th grade students from the School City of Mishawaka for education days hosted by Janet Hoke and Rick Glassman. This was the second consecutive year we have been able to offer this program in the spring.
A week-long Pioneer days was hosted by Laurie Bulaoro from the Children’s Center for the Performing Arts. The Res also sponsored a performance by the Native American storyteller, educator, and award-winning recording artist from the Oglala Lakota Nation, J.J. Kent.
Each year brings different opportunities and challenges for The Res, and last year was no exception. In particular, we continue our efforts to control the invasive honeysuckle, and also continue to work towards the completion of the water and sewer project.
Despite some challenges, we were able to maintain the buildings and grounds to a standard that our guests have come to expect. We also are proud to be able to make an impact on the overall appearance that has been enjoyed by all, whether using one of our facilities, or just out to embrace the wonders of nature on our trails. We continue to thank our Board of Directors for all their efforts and time, all our sponsoring service organizations, including Lions Club, Tri-Kappa, Mishawaka Garden Club, Kiwanis, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and Bethel College.
As always, thank you to all the groups, organizations, and individuals who have helped make and keep The Res the special place everyone can enjoy. Thank you.

4 Preservation of the Res, Inc. Annual Report
In keeping with our mission, “Where Recreation and Education Meet Nature,” the education committee invited the School City of Mishawaka fourth graders to participate in an environmental day at the Res. The Res partnered with the St. Joseph Water and Conservation District and the Mishawaka Garden Club to provide activities for the students, including a water and macro-invertebrate study, nature games, nature hike, nature center and trail activities, and a community service project which included making bird feeders. Several volunteers helped make this event a success. Over 300 students participated. We are excited to host the students again in 2015.
Environmental Days
Annual Membership DriveOur membership drive in 2014 was very successful. We had a total of 59 donors. The Garden Club collectively donated $400 this year, which actually increases the total number of donors. One $100 donation was designated for the endowment fund at the Community Foundation. One membership was restricted for a new office computer, one for the sewer project, and two for the Kiwanis Cabin. All other memberships were unrestricted. The total revenue for this membership drive was $6,075.
LARE GrantThe Res was awarded a LARE (Lake and River Enhancement) Grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. This grant provided $17,000 towards the cost of an engineering feasibility study to evaluate repairs and improvements to Eller Ditch, which runs through The Res property. Tom Estrem from Cardno spent many hours over the past year evaluating Eller Ditch, and his work culminated in December with a presentation of the nine sites for proposed improvements. With the help of Cardno, we are seeking futher LARE grant funds to complete the proposed improvement projects over the course of the next two years.

A total of 80 individuals participated, with 48 runners in the 5K event, 23 in the one mile run/walk, and nine youth in the kids’ race. The total amount raised by this event was $2,927. The top finisher in the women’s division was Chantelle Hurtekant, and the top finisher in the men’s division was Kevin Cousins. The event was a great success, and the feedback from participants was very positive. We are very grateful for all of our dedicated volunteers and participants. We look forward to hosting the third Run for the Res in 2015!
