In late 1863, Mother Joseph and Sister Catherine arrived

in Walla Walla, finding a community of 50 people with no

schools, no hospitals, struggling to meet basic needs. Mother

Joseph remarked “that place promises to be important” and

the Sisters set forth in creating institutions to help the Walla

Walla community. After receiving donated land from local

banker Edward Barron, they founded St. Vincent Academy

and began the process of building the first dedicated hospi-

tal east of the cascades. It was no small undertaking. Barron

remarked “the Sisters had hardly a dollar of their own to pur-

chase the first brick.”

Undaunted, the Sisters rallied the community for support. Lo-

cal merchants donated money. The ladies of the local par-

ish held a bazaar. Mother Joseph and Sister Catherine got on

horseback and made perilous trips to mountain mining camps

begging for money. In one instance, a miner spit in Mother

Joseph’s hand when she asked for money. She simply replied

“that was for me,” then opened her other hand and said

“but this is for the poor children we help.” On January 27,

1880, financed exclusively with donations, St. Mary officially

opened with enough space to care for seven patients.

135 years later, the partnership between St. Mary and the

Walla Walla community has never been stronger.

In 2014 we reached a milestone never before achieved in St.

Mary’s history: receiving over $1.2 million in donations in a

calendar year.

Our separate, local 501c3 status gives our 19 board members

the autonomy to direct and manage the funding decisions of

the Foundation, ensuring the best use of philanthropic dollars

and honoring the intent of each donor. Thank you for con-

tinuing the legacy of the Sisters of Providence. Our partner-

ship with the community is a legacy we will foster for future

generations.

Providence St. Mary Foundation is a local, non-profit organization, apart

from the hospital, with a mission to enhance health care at Providence St.

Mary. Your support allows the Foundation to fund programs and capital

projects that enrich the lives of our friends, family and neighbors living in

the Walla Walla region.

Each and every dollar of your support enhances care at Providence St.

Mary and does not go to other Providence ministries. The Foundation is

led by local community members who understand the region’s rich history

and future needs. The Board ensures all gifts support local health initia-

tives and donor intent is honored.

2015 funding priorities


In June 2012, the hospital celebrated the grand opening of its new Intensive Care Unit which brought the latest in design,

comfort and technology to our region’s critical care.

As part of the ICU’s redesign, a new nurse call system was needed; the old technology was too outdated. Through gener-

ous donations, the Foundation made a $330,000 investment in the ICU, the highlight of which is a new nurse call system.

Over the last two years, the technology has enhanced the patient experience. “The updated system sends alerts directly

to the appropriate nurse’s phone, rather than to the nurses’ station. This saves time and allows nurses to respond more

quickly to patients’ needs,” says Dr. Michael Bernstein, Chief Medical Officer.

Exceptional critical care: Two years later

When a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, family dynamics change, and

fear, doubts and questions surface. Parents struggle with what to say to their

kids. Children minimize their struggle in an effort to protect their parents.

Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery is a series of free workshops,

funded by donations, where kids work through the emotions they’re feeling.

They make a “worry box” and a “feelings mask”. They tour the cancer cen-

ter, where they eagerly raise their hands for their turn to sit in a chemo chair

as they learn about the infusion that mom or grandpa is given.

Since 2008, CLIMB® has touched hundreds of families, including the Bissell’s

(at left). Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. “Both of my kids

learned about cancer in language they can understand. Cooper loves science

and was fascinated by the radiation equipment. Rowan made a worry box

with stones with different faces. We still take out the stones at home and

talk about what those faces mean. CLIMB really made a difference-it made

cancer less scary.”

A record-breaking $105,000 was raised at this ‘Cad-

dyshack’ inspired event at the Walla Walla Country

Club, which was attended by 144 golfers and 275

dinner guests.

624 participants gathered at Walla Walla Community

College to walk, cycle, horseback ride or run through

colored powder to raise money for the Cancer Special

Needs fund, which benefits local cancer patients.
