2014 ANNUAL REPORT Everybody Wins! Iowa
-
A letter from the
BOARD PRESIDENT You continue to make literacy and engagement real for elementary students in Iowa!
The past year presented many new challenges and opportunities for our volunteers to read with new children at new schools. We now read at 20 distinct locations, with many of these locations hosting multiple program times and days. Overall, that means we were able to read with more than 500 students, for a total of more than 418,000 pages read!
While these numbers are impressive, they don’t even begin to tell the story of our readers who continue reading during the summer months at multiple programs. Additionally, we have new schools working with us to establish new programs that will allow us to reach even more children to enhance literacy in Iowa!
We couldn’t have done it without all of the fantastic community support received from our funders (read farther into this report), and of course, the VOLUNTEERS!
However, this isn’t to say that we’ve accomplished all we’ve set out to achieve. We continue to seek and recruit new volunteers to reach our maximum capacity at each of our existing programs. Additional schools contact us all year long requesting our assistance with their students. In Des Moines Public Schools alone, we have been told that there are approximately 1,400 students that would benefit from a caring volunteer reading mentor, like you, visiting once per week during the school year.
Expansion to new programs requires additional funding. We utilize staff, board members, and volunteers to help us write grants and make contacts to further develop our funding stream to allow us to expand to all of the schools that have expressed a need and interest in receiving our assistance.
With your continuing commitments to the children we serve, we keep moving toward the goal of reading with as many children as possible. Working together, we will enhance the literacy of Iowa’s elementary students, one reader at a time.
Thank you!

YEAR IN REVIEW Barnes and Noble Book Events This year Everybody Wins! Iowa once again had the pleasure of collaborating with Barnes and Noble Booksellers for two book fairs, one held in December and one held in June. We are happy to report that cumulatively we raised $2,485.35 to buy books for our programs. Both events featured special “character-themed” story times enjoyed by all of the children present. We also had special holiday gift wrapping at the December fair.

Everybody Wins! Iowa would like to extend a huge thank you to Barnes and Noble West Des Moines for their continued support, as well as to all of the volunteers who came out to help the book fair run as smoothly as possible. We couldn't have done it without you!
Color Vibe, A 5k Fun Run and Color Dance Party Color Vibe, a 5k run, planned an event in Des Moines on June 28, 2014, and selected
Everybody Wins! Iowa, as their local charity to sponsor. The event provided us with $698 in funding!
Four staff and three EWI volunteers provided a water table at mile 1, and a booth at the finish line.

Scholastic Book Fairs EMC sponsored a new location this year for our two Scholastic Book Fairs held November 25-26, 2013, and on March 12-13, 2014, (Book Fair Fiesta) at Kaleidoscope at the Hub! Many thanks to all those who volunteered to set up, tear down, or staff the event, as well as all who purchased books to support our organization. Our total balance from both book fairs is $2864 in Scholastic book dollars.

Power Lunch Week During the last week of October, Everybody Wins! Iowa put on our annual Power Lunch Week to honor many of our mentors who have dedicated their time with us for more than five years, as well as the various businesses that have supported us and our mission. Mentors and mentees displayed their creativity by decorating bookmarks and
exchanging them—a fun way to show appreciation for one another. We are so grateful for all of our volunteers, school coordinators, organizations, students, and schools for helping us to make Power Lunch Week—as well as this whole program—so fantastic. A match making bookmarks for each other during Power Lunch Week!

Heroes Week From February 3-7, Everybody Wins! Iowa put on our third annual Heroes Week. During this week, we invited different local heroes to visit each of our programs, read to the students and their mentors, and talk to the students about the importance of reading in their jobs. This year our heroes included local athletes, firefighters, military personnel, nurses, and police officers. To conclude our celebration of these inspiring heroes, mentors and students were invited to attend an Iowa Wild game sponsored by CenturyLink. What a fun and exciting way to celebrate the people that make our community great!

Volunteer Recognition Events Showing appreciation to our volunteer mentors is ongoing throughout the year. Our program would not be possible without our generous volunteers who spend time each week with their students, reading with them and mentoring them. Here are a few ways we celebrated our invaluable mentors this year: In October during Power Lunch Week, we gave special recognition to volunteer longevity with certificates to mentors who have spent five or more years with us. Students and mentors also made special book markers for each other. In November, our School Coordinators gave special thank-you notes to our mentors as a special “Thanks-for-giving your time as a mentor,” during the Thanksgiving holiday. In January, the entire nation celebrated National Mentoring Month (NMM) and all of our mentors received special mentoring certificates signed by Governor Branstad and our students designed special NMM thank you cards for their mentors. In March, we honored Amy Elbert as Everybody Wins! Iowa’s Hero of the Month at the Smart Talk series on March 27, 2014.

On April 22nd, as part of Volunteer Recognition Month, two of our mentors, Kate Allen Jones and Hal Rusk, were selected by United Way of Central Iowa as individual outstanding volunteers of youth at the Annual Live United “Put Your Hands Together” Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held at The Meadows.

Eight mentors were honored for their contribution to Everybody Wins! Iowa at the Annual Governor's Volunteer Awards held at SE Polk High School on June 18, 2014. The Governor's Volunteer Award is received by individuals and groups who have improved Iowa communities with their exceptional volunteer efforts, commitment, hard work, and dedication. Pictured below are EWI Mentors Kathryn Dawley, Courtney Howell, and Shauna Isaac receiving their award with Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds.
Program Expansion This school year has been another year of growth for Everybody Wins! Iowa, and we couldn't have done it without all of our students, mentors, and coordinators. During the 2013-2014 school year, Everybody Wins! Iowa expanded programming to Lakewood Elementary in Norwalk, Terrace Elementary in Ankeny, as well as additional grades to serve more students in most of our schools. We are excited to announce that we will be starting a Power Breakfast program at Hillside Elementary in West Des Moines in the fall, 2014. There are two other school districts requesting programs that we hope to obtain school sponsorships for as well.
