Dear Friends,What a special year 2014 was for Caritas of Austin! Thank you for your support as we celebrated 50 years of serving the Austin community.

As we look forward, our city is at an important crossroads. Austin’s tremendous growth is placing greater burdens on our most vulnerable community members. We will only be a great community when we are all committed to a good life for everyone who lives here.

The point at which Caritas of Austin intersects with people is often their time of greatest crisis. Caritas of Austin turns crisis into stability, and hopelessness toward hope — to empower people toward the life they want. We remain committed to employing best practices to do this because we know there are solutions that work.

Our vision for this great city is to make homelessness rare, short-term, and non-recurring. Every day we see firsthand that people lack not the motivation to improve their life, but the opportunity and tools to do so. We help people restore stability in their lives so that choices, not circumstances, guide their journey. That is the reason we are expanding to open a second location, Caritas North, in 2015.

Our community must make a collective commitment to reducing poverty and homelessness, each of us uniquely contributing to solutions. I hope you will continue your commitment to make Austin great for all who call it home.

Jo Kathryn Quinn, Executive Director

We provide a service continuum for those experiencing poverty that begins with a safety net and links them to resources to achieve self-sufficiency.

We envision a community where there is respect for all individuals, hope for those experiencing poverty, and opportunities for self-reliance.

CARITAS NORTHAfter months of strategic planning in 2014, Caritas of Austin plans to open a second location in North Austin in March 2015. Caritas North will be a smaller neighborhood center offering appointment-based services to help families transition out of homelessness toward self-sufficiency. We are opening a second location to better serve Austin families and individuals and to provide additional capacity to grow our programs and services. We look forward to partnering with the North Austin community.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

EXPANDED EMPLOYMENT SERVICESIn 2014, Caritas of Austin’s employment program placed nearly 600 individuals in jobs - a 25% increase over 2013. Services range from pre-employment preparation, resume development, and workforce training to job placement, referrals to vocational training, and long-term career development. Last year, Caritas’ workforce development programs expanded to include Introduction to Health Professions and offer onsite culinary internships. Caritas of Austin partners with over 200 local employers to hire clients seeking employment.

ENDING VETERAN HOMELESSNESSIn 2014, Caritas of Austin served 192 veteran households who were either homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Last October, Mayor Lee Leffingwell accepted the mayoral challenge to end veteran homelessness in Austin by the end of 2015, and newly elected Mayor Steve Adler plans to continue moving foward with this commitment. The Caritas team also began serving Williamson County in 2014 and will start serving Bastrop County in 2015.

FUNDRAISING SUCCESSESOur 50th anniversary was a special year filled with many celebrations including an anniversary kick-off party at Hotel Ella and a 50th birthday bash at St. David’s Episcopal Church. In 2014, philanthropic contributions increased by 10% over 2013, thanks to the support of the community. Last year more than 2,100 volunteers also gave their time to support our mission. A total of 26,000 volunteer hours had an estimated value of $585,143 to propel Caritas of Austin’s work.
