Dear EcoViva Community,
I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your solidarity and for everything that
you’ve done for EcoViva and our partners in Central America. Thank you for being a part
of building resilient communities. Thank you for helping us promote a new living econo-
my and thriving ecosystems in Central America.
When I went to El Salvador last year, I got to meet the people who are leading the way
forward towards a living economy and a healthy and thriving ecosystem. Our partners at
La Coordinadora and the Mangrove Association are growing organic gardens, launching
microenterprises, and fostering youth leadership. They are restoring endangered sea turtle
populations and installing sanitation systems. They work with a number of North Ameri-
can actors to improve local development initiatives. Partners such as Engineers Without
Borders work with communities to build solar powered irrigation systems at public school
gardens and improve water provision to hundreds of rural families. Our partnerships have
helped communities lead the way in preserving the largest mangrove forest in Central
America, while expanding local rules and regulations on environmental conservation to a
national level. Farming and fishing communities are also now at the forefront of a nation-
al conversation on food sovereignty and economic development and addressing the driv-
ers that led to the surge of child migrants in 2014. Thanks to our combined efforts, thou-
sands of people lead better lives.
I’m proud to be a part of this growing movement that seeks to build an economy that rec-
onciles with our ecology and I’m pleased to get to work with such inspiring partners. This
work is possible thanks to your solidarity and generous support.
With gratitude,
Karolo Aparicio
Executive Director
EcoViva works in partnership and soli-
darity with community-led organizations
in Central America organized to achieve
environmental sustainability, economic
security, social justice, and peace. The
vision and implementation of our pro-
grams come from our local partners.
Our primary focus area is the Lower
Lempa region of El Salvador. In 2014,
we also channeled funding to communi-
ty-based organizations in Honduras and
Nicaragua.

Closer institutional ties with the Ministry of Environ-
ment — Community leaders designed a joint environmental action plan that was adopted by the current Minister of Environment. This action plan includes greater coordination with local authorities on wet-land ranger patrols and increased joint oversight in existing coastal regulations like fisheries activities. In addition, the Maritime Science Institute (ICMARES) of the University of El Salvador and the Man-grove Association established an agreement to improve management of the sustainable fishery initiative Pesca Limpia by applying science to these livelihood and economic strategies in the fishery. • Over 50,000 sea turtle eggs were incubated in local hatcheries. • More than 350 patrols coordinated with authorities helped en-
sure there was not a single reported Hawksbill sea turtle mortality due to blast fishing.
• 34 local fishers joined the Pesca Limpia initiative, pledging to em-ploy sustainable fishing practices.
• Fishers drafted and executed a plan to restore five acres of key mangrove habitat.
• 14 new representatives elected to the Environmental Committee in charge of renewal and oversight of the Local Plan for Sustaina-ble Use (PLAS) of natural resources.
• EcoViva facilitated annual strategic planning process of the Bay of Jiquilisco Environmental Roundtable, approved by 22 govern-ment, non-government and community-based organizations.
Growing youth leadership and community organizing — The Mangrove Association’s Youth Program formed five Local Youth Groups, modeled after the organization of La Coordinadora del Bajo Lempa. These groups planned and implemented community reforesta-tion projects and environmental education at sea turtle hatcheries. In addition, the groups provided leadership development opportunities including participating in the Mangrove Association’s strategic plan-ning sessions and exchanges with the well-established adult Local Groups. • Local youth volunteer broadcasters continued to run Mangrove
Radio and broadcast programming to 200 communities in the Bay of Jiquilisco.
• Youth leaders held environmental workshops and tree planting days in 11 schools with more than 620 students.
• The youth group of San Hilario, together with the University of Oklahoma’s WaTER Center and the Rotary Club of San Diego, installed solar-powered irrigation at a public school garden. Four more school gardens are being constructed in 2015.
• EcoViva convened the Minister and Vice Minister of Public Works to dedicate a portion of their annual budget toward mak-ing the first-ever improvements to levee infrastructure along the San Miguel River, in order to protect over 25 rural farming and fishing communities in Puerto Parada.
2014 Highlights — EcoViva in El Salvador
Victory for Salvadoran farmers and locally-sourced
seed — Earlier this year, the U.S. announced that, in order to receive development aid, El Salvador needed to change the way it sourced corn and bean seed for the country-wide Family Agriculture Program. EcoViva worked with local and international actors to clarify the procurement process and advocate for local farmers. EcoViva’s work ensured the continuation of the successful program, which has generated nearly double annual income levels and provided jobs for over 4,000 local farmers and their families in the Lower Lempa. Overall, the program has added $25 million to the El Salvador's rural economy.
