ABOUT THE ISO“Peace and friendship with all mankind is our wisest policy and I wish that we may be permitted to pursue it.” -Thomas Jefferson
The International Studies Office (ISO), a division of UVa Global, is a University-wide resource which contrib-utes to UVa’s global mission through activities, programs and services designed to support the development of a globally aware, culturally diverse education and research environment. Through the International Students and Scholars Program, Education Abroad, and the Lorna Sundberg International Center, the ISO provides expertise and infrastructure to help expand and sustain global education at the University of Virginia. International Students and Scholars Program staff: • provide advice and counsel to the international student and scholar community • serve as a resource in support of international initiatives • provide programming and services to support the adjustment and integration of international students and scholars to the U.S. and the university community
Education Abroad staff: • guide and advise students, scholars and faculty on education abroad opportunities • promote cross-cultural and safety awareness • facilitate access to education abroad to all students • collaborate with faculty and administrators in developing education abroad programs
Lorna Sundberg International Center staff and volunteers: • offer programs and services to enhance the experience of UVa’s international students, scholars, faculty and families • provide opportunities for intercultural enrichment for the University and the local community
The ISO is funded through the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. The Director reports to the Vice Provost for Global Affairs, Professor Jeffrey W. Legro. The ISO is advised by the Faculty Advisory Commit-tee on Education Abroad, the University Risk Management Committee for Education Abroad, and the Interna-tional Students and Scholars Advisory Council. In addition to the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sci-ences and the professional schools of the University, the ISO regularly collaborates with the Division of Student Affairs, Office of Summer and Special Academic Programs, University Housing and Dining Services, University Registrar, Student Financial Services, Office of Risk Management, Office of the General Counsel, Public Affairs, University Career Services, Center for International Studies, International Programs Advisory Council and stu-dent associations such as Global Student Council. The operations of the ISO are informed by the University’s Statement of Purpose and Code of Ethics and core values of honor and ethics, faculty excellence, innovation and collaboration in the pursuit of knowledge, and leadership for the public good and education for freedom. The ISO endorses the Statements of Ethics, Professional Competencies and Principles for Programs and Services developed by NAFSA: Association of International Educators and the Standards for Good Practice adopted by the Forum on Education Abroad.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS & SCHOLARSPROGRAM
Several new programs were introduced in 2014-15 for international students, scholars, faculty, staff and dependents, including Fridays Before Five and Global Greeters. ISSP, the Office of the Dean of Students, Coun-seling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and several student organizations collaborated to deliver these pro-grams. Considerable staff time was devoted in 2014-15 to a review and redesign of orientation for international students and scholars in 2015-16, which will include both in-person and on-line components and provide a more effective and engaging introduction to the University.

EDUCATION ABROAD
The International Studies Office worked with faculty to create several new education abroad program options in 2014-15, including the addition of a Sports, Language & Culture track (for student athletes and students interested in sport) in the long-running program in Valencia, Spain. UVa became the language sponsor for a semester program in Shanghai, China, and a new pro-gram was developed in Delhi, India, which will launch in spring 2016. Con-tinued efforts in curricular integration produced new Major Advising Sheets, with pathways now articulated in 19 majors, including all four tracks of the new Global Studies program. The past year also saw increased opportunities for students returning from abroad to build on their international experience, as the ISO hosted the first Lessons from Abroad conference held in the state of Virginia.

LORNA SUNDBERG INTERNATIONAL CENTER
The International Center continued to meet a need for short-term lodgings for international visitors, meeting space for U.Va. departments and organizations with an international/multicultural focus, and English language classes. Each month, the IC hosted several social and cultural programs including activities, cooking classes, talks, movies, and local outings. Large special events this year included the annual Mary Ellen Brown Family Picnic, the Holiday Lights Celebration, and the annual Spring Bluegrass Picnic. Ebob-Tabi Besong, a rising 4th year interna-tional student from London, England, was awarded the 2015 Lorna Sundberg Scholarship for her academic achievement and commitment to volunteerism.
