South Dakota Need Based Grant Program – $500-$2,000 awards to needy students
enrolled at participating institutions within South Dakota. No specific form is required to
receive funds. To be eligible, students must complete the Free Application for Federal

South Dakota Technical Institutions Critical Needs Workforce Scholarship – Up to
$5,000 for a qualifying 2-year program and up to $2,500 for a 1-year program for students
who agree to work in the high-demand field in South Dakota for 3 years following graduation.
Scholarships are available from Lake Area Tech, Mitchell Tech, Southeast Tech, and Western
Dakota Technical Institute in school years 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017. Visit the web

Jump Start Scholarship – For students who graduate in 3 years or less, area a resident of
South Dakota, have attended a public high school in South Dakota on a full-time
basis for at least two semester before graduating, and who are enrolled in a
participating college, university, or technical school. Deadline: September 1.

South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship, Board of Regents - $5,000 over 4 years.
Students must have a minimum 24 ACT, at least a 3.0 GPA (nothing below a “C”),
take required high school courses: including 4 years of math (algebra I and above), 4
years of science, and 2 units of either or a combination of world language and an

American Indian Fellowship in Business Scholarship Program – Funded through the
National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development, this scholarship is open
to juniors, seniors or graduates who are enrolled as full-time students in higher ed
institutions who are majoring in business. Applications must have official
documentation of tribal enrollment and must be able to attend Indian Progress in
Business Event (INPRO) in October. Deadline: September 5, 2014.

Catching the Dream – Funds range from $500 to $5,000 per academic year are available for
high-achieving Native American Indian students in the fields of math, engineering,
science, business, education and computers. Eligibility requirements: must be ¼ or
more degree American Indian, and be enrolled member of a U.S. tribe; attend an
accredited college or university on a full-time basis; have a high GPA; have a high ACT or SAT
score; and must also apply to all other sources of funding which they are eligible. Deadlines:
September 15 for spring semester or quarter, March 15th for summer school, and April 15th for
fall semester or quarter.
U.S. Senate Youth Program Scholarship – The U.S. Senate Youth Scholarship Program is a
nationwide youth program that brings high school students to Washington, D.C., for
a brief on-site introduction to the functions of the federal government and, in
particular, the U.S. Senate. The program will be held March 7-14, 2015. Each high
school principal may submit 2 nominations on forms by the Department of Education. Open to
juniors or seniors who have not previously been a delegate to the program. A $5,000

Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship – For seniors who have a minimum 3.0 CGPA,
have participated in an eligible school sponsored sport, and are a leader in their

Horatio Alger Scholarship – Applicants must be enrolled full-time as a high school senior
and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation, exhibit a
strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree at an accredited
institution (may start at a two-year institution and transfer), demonstrate critical
financial need ($55,000 or lower adjusted gross family income is required), be involved in co-
curricular and community service activities, display integrity and perseverance in overcoming
adversity, maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA, and be a U.S. citizen.

Stokes Educational Scholarship Program National Security Agency (NSA) – Funds up
to $30,000 per year and winners will work during the summers at NSA for 12 weeks in
areas related to course of study, receiving an experience and a salary year round.
Open to high school seniors planning on majoring in computer science or
computer/electrical engineering. Other eligibility requirements are to be a U.S. citizen,
eligible to be granted a security clearance, a high school senior at the time of application, a
minimum 25 ACT score or 1600 SAT score, a 3.0 GPA is preferred, and have demonstrated

Educational Foundation Scholarship – $500 to $1,000. Open to high school seniors or

American Indian Graduate Center Undergraduate Scholarships – Scholarships, such as
Wells Fargo American Indian and Accenture American Indian, are available to Native American

The University of South Dakota – Ullyot Lakota Scholarship – valued at $20,000 over
four years ($5,000 per year). The Ullyot Lakota Scholarship is awarded to Native
American students who are members of federally recognized tribes and is based on
academic merit. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Partial, one-time
scholarships are also available to American Indian students who demonstrate a commitment

Must write a five-page essay on one of 5 selected topics. May do research to complete the

Northern State University Hatterscheidt $15,000 Scholarship – Must be a South
Dakota resident, have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, show financial need, and accepted to NSU.

February 2015 Deadlines
South Dakota School of Mines – In order to be considered for incoming freshman
scholarships at the School of Mines, prospective students must have been accepted
for admission no later than the first business day in February prior to the year they
plan to attend. Tiospaye in Engineering Scholarship – Application for this scholarship
is completed when applying to South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Four year
renewable scholarship based on academic achievement and financial need. Scholarships can
range up to $8,000 annually, thanks to a grant from the National Science Foundation.
Applicants must transfer from a tribal college or graduate from a tribal high school or be an
enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe. Must be admitted to the School of Mines as a
freshman or a transfer student and declare a major in one of the participating engineering

Dakota Corps Scholarship Program – Full undergraduate tuition and fees at a public
South Dakota institution, a public technical school or a tribal school. Students
attending a private South Dakota college will receive the amount for a public
institution and the private school will provide scholarship money for the remaining
cost. Must have a 2.8 GPA and a 24 or greater on the ACT. Must agree to work in South Dakota
in a critical needs area for as many years as you receive the scholarship, plus one year. 2013
current critical needs areas are: teaching k-12 special education, high school math, science or
career and technical education; accountant/auditor; engineer (includes all fields EXCEPT
mining); information technology; and registered nurse. Deadline: February 1.

Science (WISE) – This organization is designed to encourage and support young Native

Sports Quest Playing with Purpose Scholarship (formerly: High School Christian
Althete All-American Program) – $500 scholarship to college of choice. Selection as an

Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship – The annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism
Conference is open to high school juniors who plan to pursue a career in
journalism, will graduate the following year, are able to demonstrate qualifies of a
“free spirit” and will be able to attend the conference in Washington, D.C. in mid-
July. The scholarship pays all conference expenses for travel, lodging, ground

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology – Tiospaye in Science & Engineering
Program – This is a support program to increase the number of American Indians graduating
with BS degrees in mathematics, science and engineering. The five program support
components are financial, academic, professional, cultural and social. Four-year
renewable scholarships (up to $80,000 annually) based on academic talent and
financial need are available, thanks to two grants from the National Science Foundation.
Applicants must first be a graduate of a tribal high school, or a transfer from a tribal college,
or be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe. Get your FAFSA in as early as

Dakota Wesleyan University Scholarship Days – Randall Scholarship Day is held February
7th to seniors who display a strong talent for leadership and service, consisting of a minimum
3.5 GPA and 24 ACT. Presidential Scholarship Day is held February 22nd to seniors who have a
minimum 3.0 GPA and 21 ACT. Scholarships are also offered for students interested in
athletics, theatre and music and those who belong to the United Methodist Church. The

Yankton College Scholarships – Several $1,000 scholarships open to graduating seniors who
have a relative that attended or worked at Yankton College, or a family friend,
teacher or pastor with a connection to Yankton College may sponsor the applicant.

recommendation.

American Students – For freshmen Native American students pursuing studies in
agribusiness, agriculture production, agricultural studies, or a natural resources

Mitchell Technical Institute Scholarships – Several scholarships are available online in

Northern State University Scholarships – Various scholarships. Four-year scholarship
requirements include: ACT of 28 or above - $2,500 per year; ACT of 24-27 - $1,500 per year
for 4 years; and ACT of 21-23 - $1,000 per year for 4 years. All require you to maintain a 3.0

South Dakota State University – Hach Scientific Foundation Undergraduate Chemistry
High School Teacher Training Scholarship. American Cancer Society awards renewable
scholarships to underrepresented minority students who want to enter the fields of chemistry
or chemistry-related fields. Renewable awards up to $6,000 are given to qualified American
Indian and other minority students are high school seniors or college freshmen, sophomores,
or juniors pursuing a college degree in the chemical sciences or chemical technology. If a
student decides to become a teacher and would like their education coursework after
graduation, they may also apply for this scholarship. Application requires a letter explaining
why you are committed to becoming a chemistry teacher and two letters of recommendation.

enrolled in their tribe (Continental U.S. or Alaska only), enrolled in an accredited school full
time both fall and spring semester, and be seeking an associate’s degree or higher. Check

Maureen L. & Howard N. Blitman, P.E., Scholarship to Promote Diversity in
Engineering – Awarded to a high school senior from an ethnic minority who has been
accepted into an ABET-accredited engineering program at a four-year university.
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and South Dakota State University are
both ABET-accredited engineering institutions. Scholarship awards two disbursements
of $2,500 during the freshman year of college.

South Dakota Amateur Softball Scholarship – Open to graduating seniors, age 19 or
younger, who have been participants in the South Dakota Amateur Baseball
Association and/or have participated in the SDASA program for at least 3 years as a

recommendations and a 100-word or less personal statement. Deadline: March 1.

National Press Club Scholarship for Journalism Diversity – Consists of a $2,000 one-
year scholarship, which can be renewed for up to three years at $2,500 per year.
The first scholarship includes an additional $500 book stipend to be called the Ellen
Masin Persina Scholarship, making the total first-year scholarship award totaling
$2,500. The scholarship is open to high school seniors with a 3.0+ GPA who are preparing to
enter college with intentions of becoming a journalist, and who will bring diversity to U.S.

South Dakota Agri-Business Association Scholarship – $1,000. Applicant may be a high
school senior or registered freshman, sophomore, or junior at a SD university or
technical school who will or is majoring in agriculture. Applicant must also be a
customer, employee or family member of an employee of a member of the South
Dakota Agri-Business Association (SDABA).

American Indian Education Foundation Scholarship Program – Open to Native
Americans enrolling full-time in a 2 or 4-year college or university or vocational
technical school. These people also support their students with care packages, phone

Joe Foss…An American Hero Scholarship – To be eligible for this award, applicants must
plan to attend an accredited college or university or vocational or technical school;

Fred & Marie Christopherson Scholarship – Applicants who plan to attend a four-year
college or university in South Dakota, have a minimum GPA of 3.9 after seven
semesters, and have a minimum ACT score of 28 are eligible for this award. It is
available to seniors graduating from South Dakota high schools. Award: $2,500.

Fool Soldier Scholarship – This award is open to descendants of the Fool Soldiers, a group
of Teton Lakota men who ransomed the freedom of two white women and six
children held captive by a band of Dakota Indians in 1862. Eligible applicants must
be able to prove their descendancy; have a GPA of 2.0 or higher; be planning to
attend an accredited college, university, or technical school; and have financial need. Award:

Kimberly Rose Means Native American Council of Tribes Scholarship – This
scholarship benefits graduating high school seniors who are enrolled members of a
South Dakota Native American tribe or South Dakota tribal members who are
returning to school after an absence. Applicants must plan to attend an accredited
college, university, or vocational school; have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher; have
participated in school and community activities (only applies to high school seniors); and have
the desire and ability to accomplish his or her goals. Award: $500.

Osmann Family Native American Scholarship – This scholarship benefits graduating
South Dakota high school seniors who are enrolled members of a Native American
tribe. Applicants must plan to attend a college in the South Dakota university
system or a vocational or technical school in Sioux Falls, Watertown, Mitchell, or
Rapid City and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher after seven semesters of high school. Applicants
must also have the desire and ability to succeed in further academic study and have
participated in extra-curricular activities or community activities. Award: $1,000.

Cogley-Buffington Certified Property and Casualty Underwriters Fund – To be
eligible for this award, applicants must be graduating seniors from high schools
throughout South Dakota, Southwest Minnesota, and Northwest Iowa who plan to

demonstrate financial need; have a GPA of 3.5 or higher; participate in extra-curricular
activities and community activities, and demonstrate an interest in and understanding of the
