“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.” - Edith Wharton
Dear Friends,
United Way of the Coastal Empire has been spreading light on this community for over 75 years by improving lives and mobilizing volunteers to help people in need. United Way proudly supports 54 human service agencies and nearly 100 programs in our four county area: Bryan, Chatham, Effingham and Liberty. Volunteers from all walks of life review these programs annually to ensure we are achieving the greatest community impact with your contributions.
Last year, more than 32,000 individuals chose to shine by engaging as a beacon of hope and contributing to the United Way community-wide fundraising campaign. The results were impressive, raising close to $9 million and surpassing our $8,888,888 goal. An even brighter result can be seen in the thousands of lives that were improved through these generous contributions.
Still others chose to contribute in another way by volunteering to help at a local human service organization or by lending a hand to a senior in need. We thank the individuals who came together through United Way HandsOn Savannah to assist Lieutenant John White, a 90 year old retired Metro Savannah police officer and veteran.
Lieutenant White gave 38 years of service to Savannah citizens and is the last surviving member of the “Original Nine” black police officers who joined the force in 1947. Prior to that, Lieutenant White served with the Montfort Point Marines, the first black unit to integrate with the United States Marine Corps.
Lieutenant White has given a lot to this community, so when fellow officers noticed his home was in disrepair they were quick to respond by leading a renovation project in conjunction with United Way HandsOn Savannah. In addition to volunteer management services, United Way HandsOn Savannah provided the materials and tools necessary to help the project succeed.
Last year, more than 10,000 individuals mirrored the mission of United Way HandsOn Savannah, which is to build neighborhood spirit by uniting caring citizens to address critical needs in our community through volunteerism.
We ask you to get involved. Be a candle or be a mirror, but find a way to give back to this community we call home.
Sincerely,
Michael C. TraynorBoard Chair, United Way of the Coastal EmpirePublisher, Savannah Morning News

LOYAL CONTRIbUTORSRichard L. Williams embodies United Way’s principles of Give, Advocate and Volun-teer. A Loyal Contributor since the late 1940s, Mr. Williams started giving to United Way when he worked for Frigidaire. “I’m a believer in the tremendous value of services United Way provides,” said Mr. Williams, who can’t overstate the importance of United Way-funded programs. He says so many people in need would not make it without United Way enriching our community.
Mr. Williams lost his favorite aunt to a domestic violence murder in 1930. Now, 100 years of age, he still thinks of her every day and works to make a difference for others. While serving as the buildings and grounds chair for SAFE Shelter’s Board of Directors in the 1990’s, Mr. Williams was instrumental in the capital campaign that resulted in a critically needed, new domestic violence shelter.
Mr. Williams advocated for program support, screened agency applications, and recommended funding awards through his service on United Way’s investment panels of Health & Wellness (2010) and Economic Independence (2011). He remains a Loyal Contributor to United Way because he is impressed with the quality of leadership among the organizations United Way reviews and supports through program investment.
Under the leadership of Campaign Chair Jenny Gentry of Wells Fargo, United Way of the Coastal Empire raised close to $9 million to support much-needed programs and services in our community.

IMPACT: WONdERfUL THINGS HAPPEN WHEN WE LIvE UNITEd
How do we LIVE UNITED?We give, we advocate, we volunteer. In our community, we don’t have to hope someone else will step up and lend a hand to those in need, because we all do. In our com-munity, we don’t just consider the issues, we get out there and advocate for change. In our community, we don’t ex-pect someone else to take care of others; we give to help those in need. In the Coastal Empire, we don’t have to imagine change, because by LIVING UNITED, we are that change. That change is exemplified through our investment process. The work in 2014 continues to drive our mission in 2015, as we invest $4.4 million in nearly 100 programs and ser-vices that help children and youth achieve their potential,
promote financially stable families, and improve health and well-being for all. This is made possible by the gener-osity of 32,000 donors who contributed to our United Way campaign. Over the course of five months, 60 Investment Volunteers spent 1,656 hours of time to ensure each invest-ment we make is sound and will deliver long-lasting results.

Statement of Financial Position
United Way of the Coastal Empire places great emphasis on upholding the highest standards of excellence and accountability. To ensure efficient, strong fiscal management, United Way’s Finance Committee regularly reviews the organization’s financial reporting and management practices on behalf of the Board of Directors and reports the results of their activities. In addition, United Way receives an annual independent audit and has consistently received a clean, unqualified audit opinion.
United Way of the Coastal Empire (UWCE) is contracted to manage the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and raised $401,894 in the 2014 campaign. Of this amount $4,056 was designated to UWCE, which is reflected in the figures reported above. Campaign expenses for the CFC were $114,283. UWCE’s share of the campaign expenses were $1,153.
Founded in 1938, United Way of the Coastal Empire has since
been devoted to improving lives by mobilizing the caring power
of communities. United Way serves Bryan, Chatham, Effingham
and Liberty Counties. Thanks to the Herschel V. Jenkins Trust Fund
and other income which covers almost all administrative and
fund raising costs, donor contributions go to help people in need.
