2014-2015 Annual Report
Real world connections! It’s the magic ingredient the Oak Park Education
Foundation has been using to inspire a love of learning in District 97 kids for
26 years. Over and over, students and teachers tell us that OPEF classroom
partnerships with scientists, architects, artists, engineers and technology
experts are among the most memorable and motivating projects they do
in school.
2014-15 was a hugely successful year for the Oak Park Education Foundation
and the kids we serve. Thanks to your generous support, OPEF delivered
free, relevant, in-school residencies to more than 4,100 District 97 students
last year – a new record! We also served more than 1,350 students in BASE
Camp, providing unique, fun and educational summer and school holiday
programs — while granting more than $20,000 in camp scholarships to D97
kids. Finally, we exceeded revenue goals and laid the groundwork for an
innovative new program so we can serve more students in 2015-16.
We couldn’t have done it without you.
While life seems to be getting more complicated, our mission is
simple — efficiently deliver high-impact innovative programs to District
97 students. Why do we do it? Because when every child shares
common enriching experiences, we build stronger schools, a stronger
district, and a stronger community.
Deb Abrahamson Karen Daily Executive Director President of the Board
Dear Friends,
“I learn best with hands on and by testing my knowledge
in the real world.”
We asked nearly 1,000 Oak Park middle schoolers “How do you learn best?” One said, “I learn best when the class is interactive and a mix of group and individual activities,” another said “I like having guests come in and talking to us about science experiments!”

The world is our classroom
Field trips provide multi-sensory learning, bringing lessons to life
Gears grinding, wheels turning, machines in action.
For the first time ever, Geared Up took the learning about simple
machines on the road with a field trip to Oak Park’s Public Works
Center, and a visit with John Wielebnicki, Director of Public Works.
Holmes, Beye and Longfellow students examined the workings
of the cherry picker, snow plow and street sweeper.
Last year over 780 children made real-world connections on an OPEF field trip, from museums and universities with Science Alliance to walking neighborhood tours with Architecture Adventure.
Did youknow?
“This year our field trip to the Oak Park Public Works Department was awesome!! The students saw how simple machines are used everyday in the maintenance of our village and their positive impact and necessity.”

We educate the whole child
From science to art, technology to culture, our hands-on projects engage all children
Rosa Parks. Ghandi. Martin Luther King, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt.
Second graders partnered with Art Start artist Jen McNulty to learn
a history of mosaics, discuss important historical peace leaders, and
create powerful photo mosaics that were displayed at Village Hall.
Last year 18 professional artists, musicians and dancers worked with nearly 870 children. The number of kids working with resident artists will more than double in 2015-16 with the introduction of Spoken Word.

“Art Start is a magnificent way to differentiate learning and bring new depth to classroom studies in a fun, hands-on way.”

Partners make us smarter
Visiting experts and partner organizations enrich children’s learning
Science Alliance partner Craig Hendee from the Middle East
Falcon Research Group taught 3rd graders about endangered falcon
species, conservation, and culture as part of an ongoing Mongolian
Artificial Nesting project. Not only did the kids get to meet Alvin
the peregrine falcon, they also built a yurt!
Last year 96 volunteers lent their scientific, creative, engineering, and technical expertise to bring learning to life for District 97 kids.

“It’s easy to incorporate and it’s an experience I could not provide my students...ever.”
————District 97 Teacher
We are inclusive
Every D97 child experiences OPEF project-based learning
Most of our programs are delivered during the school
day and reach every child in the classroom. In fact, during their
tenure in District 97, every child will learn with their hands during
at least six free in-depth, multi-day OPEF residencies.
This year OPEF VEX Robotics served more kids, and a higher percentage of them were girls, 28% versus 18% the prior year.

“When I joined VEX there were four girls in the whole JV club. This year there are 4 girls on my team alone! It’s awesome.”

Big ideas come from our communityFresh perspectives keep us relevant in
a changing environment
Our first “Call for Ideas” in six years brought in 78 innovative
ideas plus some great feedback from nearly 1,000 of our middle
schoolers. In just nine months, Spoken Word was selected by
the OPEF board, refined by a planning committee,
and launched in both middle schools!
Community members also sit on our board, participate in committees, volunteer with kids, and partner with us on BASE Camp. Last year volunteers gave 3,732 hours of time to support OPEF.

“The process of pulling together the program for Spoken Word was amazing...I really have very high hopes for the impact it will have on our students, especially the ones who are on the fringes.”

Spoken Word planning committee
BASE Camp is a quadruple win
Growth of fee-for-service program delivers significant value to District 97 and families
In addition to providing children with high-quality summer
and day-off enrichment, BASE Camp acts as an innovation incubator
not only for OPEF, but also for D97 teachers. The program employs
D97 teachers and many D97 grads, and BASE Camp generated
$75,000 last year, helping fund our free in-school programs
and diversify our funding base.
BASE Camp served 1,348 kids last year, up from 125 just 5 years ago, and we gave out $20,320 in scholarships to D97 kids!

Peter Traczyk Innovation Fund
Honoring his legacy
Former OPEF board member and District 97 board member
Peter Traczyk was a remarkably effective community leader because
he brought people together to find solutions that leave a positive and
lasting impact on children. To honor this legacy, OPEF created the
Peter Traczyk Innovation Fund, which will provide seed funds for new
OPEF initiatives in D97. Spoken Word is the memorial fund recipient
for 2015-2016. Here’s of a list of generous donors to the memorial fund:
