MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the intercollegiate athletics program at the University of New Hampshire is to provide student-athletes a collegiate experience that is enriched by their participation in programs which are competitive at the NCAA Division I level both regionally and nationally. The intercollegiate athletics program also plays an important role by enhancing the quality of life for the University and statewide community by being a source of pride and identification with the University while always maintaining high standards of academic scholarship and integrity. COACHING STAFF

Cory Schwartz ‘82 is in his 33rd year coaching the Nordic program and 28th year as the ski coordinator at UNH in 2014-15. During his tenure, Schwartz has led the Wildcats to 24 Top-10 NCAA place-ments, including back-to-back seventh place finishes (‘84 & ‘85) within his first three years at the University and eighth-place finishes in 2011 and 2013, matching the squad’s top placement since 1994. From 1989-96, Schwartz’s teams claimed eight consecutive Top-10 NCAA finishes, the most in school history.

Schwartz has mentored 34 student-athletes to a total of 47 All-America Team selec-tions. Included in that number are 18 Nordic skiers compiling 12 All-America team hon-ors. The men’s skiing program earned NCAA Public Recognition Award for boasting per-fect multi-year Academic Progress Rate of 1,000 (2008-12). The women’s ski team tallied a 994 APR, which finished behind only perfect 1,000 APRs of Dartmouth and Harvard among EISA programs. In 2014, the Wildcats’ 14 members of the National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team represented the highest total among Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association members, which included Dartmouth College, Harvard University and the University of Vermont. In 2013, senior Liz Guiney was the recipient of the NCAA Elite 89 award, which recognized her for reaching the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level while also achieving the highest academic standard among her peers. Schwartz was named the EISA Coach of the Year in 1985, ‘86, 2002 and ’03 and was awarded the Al Merrill Award by the state of New Hampshire in 1998. During his collegiate career at UNH, Schwartz competed in the NCAA Championships three times before graduating in 1982. The Center Conway, N.H., native had his top perfor-mance during his junior season when he placed 10th in the NCAAs. He began coaching the men’s squad in a post-graduate year and took over duties for the women’s team the follow-ing season. He is Level II certified and has served as a member of both the Eastern USSA Sr. Com-mittee and Chairman of the NCAA Committee.

Stephen MonSuliCknordic assistant coach seventh season

Stephen Monsulick, a Readfield, Maine, native and 2007 graduate of Bates College, is in his seventh season as the Nordic assistant coach in 2014-15. The Wildcats’ Nordic ski team has recorded Top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships in five of his six seasons on the staff. Monsulick assists head coach Cory Schwartz in day-to-day op-erations of the program, with an emphasis on training, recruiting and scheduling. Stephen was a member of the Bates varsity ski team and captain

for the 2007 season. He was a two-time NCAA qualifier for cross-country running. Before coming to UNH, Monsulick spent the 2008 season as the assistant Nordic ski coach at his alma mater.


COACHING STAFF

Brian Blank ‘95 is in his eighth season as UNH alpine head coach in 2014-15. Brian has over 10 years of experience as an alpine ski racing coach as well as 15 years experience as an alpine ski racer. He lettered on the UNH ski team from 1991-95 and served as team captain in 1994-95. The 2014 Wildcats alpine team sent six skiers to the NCAA Championships. On the women’s side, Randa Teschner made it back-to-back team MVP awards after repeating as an All-America and an All-East Second Teamer during her sophomore campaign. Teschner

claimed All-America Second Team in giant slalom (10th place) and slalom (sixth place) at the NCAAs. Junior Coley Oliver took home All-America Second Team in slalom (eighth place). UNH finished eighth at the 2013 NCAA Skiing Championships, which matched their top result since 1994. Men’s alpine racers Sam Coffey (SL), Taylor Vest-Burton (SL) and Coley Oliver (GS) earned All-America First Team honors. Vest-Burton added a Second Team (GS) merit, and the Wildcats placed runner-up in both men’s disciplines. In 2011, Blank mentored a pair of All-Americans in Zach Clayton (SL, GS) and Sam Coffey (SL), helping the Wildcats post an eighth-place finish at the NCAAs, the school’s best showing in 11 years. Atkinson was named to the All-East First Team. The 2010 team boasted of a pair of All-America selections in seniors Veronique Ar-chambault-Leger and Dylan McGuffin. In 2009, Blank was named EISA Alpine Coach of the Year. During that season, the alpine team earned eight All-America honors. The alpine team was the top scoring team in the East and the second-highest scoring team at the NCAA Championships. Through the regular season, the men’s alpine team won 11 of 12 events. In the 2007-08 season -- Blank’s first year -- there were three alpine Wildcats who earned All-America status. From 2001-2006, Blank coached at Stratton Mountain School. While at SMS, Blank served as the men’s FIS coach. Prior to that position, coach Blank worked at Rowmark Ski Academy (1998-2000) in Salt Lake City, Utah and with the Brighton Ski Team (1995-98).

Matt Stanton joined the UNH alpine team as an assistant coach in October 2014. He previously worked as a coach for the USA Elite Camps at Mount Hood (2010-12) and Copper (2009-11, 13). Matt coached at Stratton Mountain School in Vermont as the lead J4 coach. He was also the Waterville Valley BBTS J4 Team Coach (2005, 2006, 2007) and residence director at Waterville Valley Academy (2006-2007). He also worked with the FIS Development group dur-ing his time at Waterville. Matt was a full-time men’s and women’s FIS coach at Team Summit, Copper, Colorado (2008-2009). Matt is a Plymouth State

Mark W. Huddleston was elected the 19th president of the University of New Hampshire in July 2007, bringing three decades of experience in public and private education as a faculty member, dean and senior admin-istrator. At UNH, President Huddleston oversees the implementation of a stra-tegic plan that is transforming the University’s mission as the state’s flag-ship public research university and one the nation’s few land-, sea- and space-grant universities. Created through a collaboration of faculty, stu-

dents, staff, alumni and the University’s wider communities, this effort challenges the Univer-sity to be innovative, entrepreneurial and responsive so that it can remain vital and financially sustainable. The plan continues to guide the University’s diverse work, from its response to a historic cut in state support in 2011 to the creation of groundbreaking new initiatives. Among these are:• the integration of UNH and the UNH School of Law (formerly Franklin Pierce Law Center),• an expansion of the UNH Manchester campus and the creation of the Emerging Technology Center,• the construction of the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics,• UNH’s participation in an agreement to double the number of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) graduates by 2025,• and the development of a comprehensive fundraising campaign. President Huddleston has also advocated for a dramatic increase in international engagement. In 2010, UNH launched the state’s only Confucius Institute with a partnership with Chengdu University, entered a partnership with Navitas, an Australian firm that recruits and supports in-ternational students, and celebrated the 25th anniversary of the International Affairs Dual Major. In May 2013, President Huddleston’s leadership as a strategic thinker, fiscal steward and collaborative problem-solver was recognized with his appointment to the newly formed Gover-nor’s Commission on State Government Innovation, Efficiency and Transparency. President Huddleston was raised in Syracuse, N.Y., and was the first member of his family to attend college. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from the State University of New York-Buffalo, and both a master’s degree and Ph.D. in political science from the Univer-sity of Wisconsin–Madison. He began his academic career at SUNY-Buffalo in 1977 as an assistant professor of political science. In 1980, he joined the faculty of the University of Delaware, where he served 24 years. There, he chaired the Department of Political Science and International Relations and was asso-ciate provost for international programs. In 2001, he was named dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, overseeing 45 academic departments and centers, and serving in that capacity until he was named president of Ohio Wesleyan University in 2004. An author of numerous books and articles, he has been a consultant for both the U.S. gov-ernment and international organizations. He also served as an adviser in Bosnia on rebuilding financial and administrative infrastructures after the Dayton accords. President Huddleston is an incorporator of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and serves on the board of directors of the New Hampshire Business Committee for the Arts. He and his wife, Emma Bricker, have three children, Andy, Kate and Giles.

The 2014-15 academic year marks the 15th year Marty Scarano is serving as the director of athletics at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with academics, facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities. There has been over $12 million in capital improvements since Scarano’s hir-ing in the summer of 2000. On Jan. 31, 2014, the University announced plans to construct a $25 million athletic complex as part of the campus’ master plan. Expected to open in late 2015, the facility will offer increased and improved

seating, state-of-the art broadcast and WiFi capability, concessions, restrooms and a special student section. The original concrete section of the current East Side facility dates to the 1930s. Construction has already begun to take shape with the addition of stadium lights, replacement of the general admis-sion stands and re-orientation of concrete stadium seating and aisle ways. Slated to be completed for the spring of 2015, UNH is building a $1.9 million Student-Athlete Center for Excellence at the Field House for its Division I and Northeast Passage student-athletes, funded entirely on private donations. Scarano has helped elevate UNH athletics into the collegiate national arena. To accomplish that goal, the University has taken on the task of hosting major NCAA championships. Most recently, New Hampshire was named host of the 2015 Men’s Ice Hockey Northeast Regional at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, N.H., the 2016 Women’s Frozen Four at the Whittemore Center and the 2017 Ski-ing Championship. Furthermore, UNH will assist the Hockey East Association in the upcoming Men’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four held at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass. In the 2014 America East Academic Cup, New Hampshire captured second place for the fourth time in five years, posting a grade point average of 3.20. It marked the highest UNH GPA in the 19-year history of the award. For the fifth consecutive year, the Wildcats had the most student-athletes (114) recognized on the fall Academic Honor Roll. In addition, UNH earned the second-highest percentage (70.4) of student-athletes named to the 2013-14 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. New Hampshire had 155 honorees, which represented 72 percent of the student-athletes who competed in those seasons, an improvement of 10 percent from the previous year. In 2007, Scarano was awarded the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA) AD of the Year for the FCS. Additionally, Scarano was also named the All-American Football Founda-tion Athletic Director of the Year for FCS football in the Northeast region. Scarano has also been an active member in the leadership of UNH’s three major conferences and was the chair of the executive committees for Atlantic 10 football, Hockey East and America East from 2003 to 2007. He also served as chair of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and is cur-rently on the America East Executive Council. Most recently, Scarano was a member of the Hockey East restructuring team that successfully recruited Notre Dame and the University of Connecticut to the conference. Outside of athletics, Scarano is in his 11th year on the Board of Corporators at Canterbury Shaker Village, a non-profit museum located in Canterbury, N.H. Before arriving at the University of New Hampshire, Scarano held the position of Athletics Direc-tor at Colorado College from July 1996 through June 2000. During his tenure, Colorado College was ranked among the top 20 Division III programs in the Sears Cup national standings and produced sev-eral All-Americans, all-academic award winners and NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients. Prior to his stay in Colorado Springs, Scarano worked for 13 years at Colgate University, where he served as assistant director of athletics, director of physical education, associate director, and senior associate director. Scarano, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., is a 1978 graduate of Penn State University, where he started his athletic career as assistant ticket manager and the athletics events manager from 1980-83. Scarano holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental History from Colgate. He and his wife, Cydney, have three children: daughter, Lynden; son, Kyle, a senior at UNH; and daughter, Corey, a junior at UNH.

Steve Metcalf is in his 18th year at UNH, having served the athletic department in a number of differ-ent capacities over the years. As the Deputy Athletic Director, he over-

sees all internal operations, as well as the women’s ice hockey, men’s soccer, field hockey, women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s skiing, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field programs, and the areas of strength & conditioning and sports medicine. Additional duties in-clude a role as Marty Scarano’s designate for all league affiliations and NCAA Championships, as well as in the daily operation of the department. UNH has served as the host for numerous NCAA championships in men’s and women’s ice hockey, gym-nastics and skiing, including two Women’s Ice Hockey National Championships and the NCAA Skiing Na-tional Championship. At the conference level, Metcalf serves on the Amer-ica East Championship Committee and recently com-pleted a two-year term as chair. He currently serves as the chair of the NCAA National Collegiate Ski commit-tee and previously was a member of the NCAA Wom-en’s Ice Hockey Committee with three years service as the chair.

Athletic excellence is part of the formula for success in the collegiate experience for University of New Hampshire ski team. The primary measure of achievement is the stu-

dent-athlete’s success in the classroom. New Hampshire also has one of the top graduation rates in the country for student-athletes. UNH is dedicated to enhancing the student-athlete’s ability to achieve academic excellence. Realizing the time commitment the athletes give to the school, the University administers a comprehensive program of ac-ademic support services that is available to Wildcat ski-ers and all other student-athletes. This program includes the monitoring of academic progress and providing tu-torial services, as well as interacting with the academic advisors within the various colleges. Serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services since 1994 is Joanne Maldari, a 1990 gradu-ate of Holy Cross who went on the earn her master’s degree in Athletic Counseling at Springfield College. She was recognized for her outstanding efforts at UNH by receiving the University’s 2001 Academic Advising Award. Before coming to Durham, Maldari served ath-letic counseling internships at Springfield and Central Connecticut State University.

Craig Edwards was named an as-sistant strength and conditioning coach at UNH in August 2014. He supervises, directs and trains the UNH ski team’s student-athletes in

regards to exercise and lifting techniques. Edwards also works as a coordinator for Healthy UNH, specifically as the instructor for noon-time faculty/staff strength and conditioning. Edwards started as a strength and conditioning intern at UNH in September 2012. He helped develop and oversee a comprehensive training program for men’s and women’s track and field, focusing on sprints and jumps. Edwards also worked with men’s basketball, volleyball, field hockey, women’s soccer, women’s la-crosse and swimming and diving. Edwards holds certifications as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist from the National Strength and Conditioning Association, a Certified Performance Enhancement Specialist from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and is CPR certified by the American Red Cross. Edwards earned his bachelor of arts degree in English from Merrimack College in 2007 and his master of sci-ence degree in Exercise Science from California Uni-versity in California, Pa., in 2013.

Paul Chapman is in his 13th year as the strength and condi-tioning director at the University of New Hampshire. During his tenure at UNH, he helped coordi-

nate the building of the state-of-the-art Jerry Azumah Performance Center, and his efforts have been key in guiding UNH athletes to NCAA appearances in men’s and women’s hockey, gymnastics, volleyball, women’s lacrosse, track & field and skiing. Chapman is a member of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (strength and conditioning coach certified), USA-Weightlifting (cer-tified level 1 coach); the National Strength and Con-ditioning Association, and he was the state director of the National Strength and Conditioning Association in North Dakota from 1991-95. In 2005, he earned the title of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach from the CSCCA. He has also authored four publications related to strength and conditioning and has trained and con-sulted several NFL, CFL and NHL athletes. Chapman is a 1990 graduate of Dickinson State Uni-versity in North Dakota with a B.S. Degree in Biology. He then went on to earn a M.S. in Exercise Science from the University of North Dakota in 1994
