Ryan Murphy, the co-architect of Texas’ 2012 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship squad who has spent the last six years making the Longhorns a perennial national title contender as an assistant coach under John Fields, became the fourth women’s golf head coach at The University of Texas on May 29, 2014.

“I am extremely humbled and grateful for the opportunity to become the next women’s golf head at The University of Texas,” Murphy said. “This means a great deal for me personally as well as my wife, Terry, and our fam-ily. To continue to work alongside John Fields, who has been a long time mentor to me, is simply terrific.”

Formerly the men’s golf head coach at NCAA Division II power St. Edward’s (Texas) University from 2005-08, Murphy assumed his current post as the assistant coach for the UT men’s golf program prior to the start of the 2008-09 season. At Texas, Murphy was reunited with Fields, his collegiate coach at the University of New Mexico.

In his six years at Texas, Murphy became one of the most highly-touted coaches in the country as he recruited and developed the talents of All-Americans Dylan Frittelli, Cody Gribble, Bobby Hudson, Jordan Spieth, Brandon Stone and Julio Vegas. From 2008-14, the Longhorns recorded 19 team titles, including their first NCAA Championship title since 1972, and 12 medalist honors. Murphy was named the 2013 Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year, recognizing his efforts as the top NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA or NJCAA assistant coach that, among other things, has helped their student-athletes both excel on the course and in the classroom.

“We are at an important juncture in our golf program, and we have confi-dence that Ryan Murphy is the coach to lead us into the future,” UT Women’s Athletics Director Chris Plonsky said. “His work ethic reveals a passion for the job. He is a relentless recruiter and has earned his reputation in the golf community as a relationship builder.

“During his coaching career, he’s identified talented players and well-rounded individuals while helping them achieve high levels of success in the most pressure-packed of competitive environments,” Plonsky continued. “The individuality of golf requires a coach who customizes an approach to each student-athlete while emphasizing the value of a team setting. We’ve watched this occur within our men’s program at Texas. We cannot wait to see Ryan transfer his leadership and coaching style -- and his intensity and energy -- to our women’s program.”

Prior to arriving on the Forty Acres, Murphy led the Hilltoppers to nation-al prominence as he guided St. Edward’s to a tie for first at the 2008 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships before falling in a three-team playoff

for the national title. The Hilltoppers qualified for the NCAA Championships by posting a 31-stroke victory in the eight-team NCAA Men’s South Central Regional Championship at the Grey Rock Golf Club in Austin.

Murphy began his coaching career as an assistant (2001-05) at his alma mater where he helped the Lobos to a fifth-place showing at the 2005 NCAA Championships and three-consecutive Mountain West Conference titles.

Murphy was a four-year letterwinner for New Mexico from 1994-97 under Fields. He twice earned Academic All-America honors for his perfor-mance in the classroom. Murphy had a career stroke average of 75.04 And played in the NCAA Championships each of his four seasons. He was a mem-ber of UNM’s Western Athletic Conference championship team in 1996 and helped lead the Lobos to a sixth-place tie in the 1996 NCAA Championships, their best finish since 1979. Murphy’s best career finish as an individual was a tie for sixth in the 1995 WAC Championships. His low round was 68 in both the 1995 and 1996 Taylor Made Intercollegiate, and his low tournament was 213 (-3) in the 1994 John Burns Intercollegiate.

Murphy earned a bachelor’s degree in criminology in 1997 and a mas-ter’s degree in sport administration in 2001 from New Mexico. He married the former Terry Furuta in June 2010, and the couple welcomed their first son, Aiden Christopher, in May 2012.

Associate Head Coach

The 2014-15 campaign marks Kate Golden’s third as a member of the Women’s Golf coaching staff at The University of Texas and fifth overall, having previously served as volunteer assistant coach since 2010.

Since Golden joined the Texas staff five years ago in a volunteer capacity, the Longhorns claimed their third Big 12 Championship in 2011 and went on to win the season-opening ‘Mo’ Morial Invitational (Sept. 11-13, 2011) and the Texas-hosted Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational (Oct. 31-Nov. 2, 2011). UT earned its fifth-consecutive NCAA Regional Championship berth in 2012 and finished tied for 13th place at the NCAA Championship, marking its best finish since 2004.

A former All-American, Golden joined the Texas staff after serving as the interim Women’s Golf head coach at Florida State during the spring 2010 season. Under Golden’s tutelage, the Seminoles finished in 10th place at the 2010 NCAA Championship to earn their best national finish since winning the 1981 AIAW Championship. Additionally, Golden guided FSU to No. 14 in the final national rankings by GolfStat and No. 22 in GolfWeek’s sea-son-ending standings after inheriting a team that was unranked in both polls.

Prior to her stint at Florida State, Golden was a volunteer assis-tant coach for the Men’s Golf team at Houston.

An 18-year LPGA veteran (1992-2010), Golden’s professional career included a victory at the 2001 State Farm Classic, appear-ances in more than 30 major championships and nearly $1.5

million in career earnings. En route to the State Farm Classic title, Golden set a then-tournament record of 21-under-par during the 72-hole event. She totaled eight top-five finishes and 14 top-10s.

A 1989 Texas graduate, Golden was a four-year member of the Women’s Golf team under former head coach Pat Weis. She earned All-America second team honors in 1989 and was a three-time All-Southwest Conference First Team selection (1987-89). Golden was named to the Southwest Conference All-Decade team for the 1980s and won three collegiate events during her career.

The 1987 Southwest Conference individual champion, Golden is the daughter of Texas Ex Joe Bob Golden, the 1954 SWC Men’s Golf individual champion. The Goldens were the only father-daughter tandem in the history of the Southwest Conference to win individual conference titles in the same sport. Joe Bob Golden played at Texas for Harvey Penick from 1952-54 and served as his assistant while attending law school at UT.

A former member of the LPGA Board of Directors and the LPGA Player Committee, Golden is currently on the Board of Directors for the charitable organization Golfers Against Cancer.

The Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational annually features many of the top women’s golf teams in the country. Until 2010, players and coaches made their plans to come to Austin each

spring to compete in one of the most prestigious regular-season tournaments in the country. In 2013, the 40th edition of the tourna-ment will take place Oct. 13-15 at The University of Texas Golf Club for its third appearance as a fall event. It was in March of 1974 that Texas head coach Pat Weis had the foresight to establish what has not only become a tradition at UT and Austin, but a tradition that dominates collegiate golf for one spring weekend. This annual event originally known as the Texas Invitational has evolved into one of the strongest collegiate invita-tional tournaments of the year. In 1977, the Texas Invitational was renamed to honor Betsy Rawls, a Texas graduate and one of the most prolific golfers of her day. Rawls won more than 50 tour championships between 1951 and 1975, including four U.S. Opens, and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977 and into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. The tournament champions’ list reads like a “who’s who” of women’s golf. Nancy Lopez, Beth Daniel, Jody Rosenthal, Val Skinner, Michiko Hattori and Annika Sorenstam are just a few of the past winners who have made the Betsy Rawls tournament one of the marquee events in women’s golf. In 2011, Texas swept team crown, medalist and runner-up honors. The victory marked the Longhorns’ seventh overall win at their home tournament and first since 1999. Nicole Vandermade became the first Longhorn to earn medalist honors since Jessica Reese accomplished the feat in 2003, and Madison Pressel finished in second place.
