GREETINGSFROM THE HOLLYWOOD CHAMBER

Heather Cochran, Chair of the BoardLeron Gubler, President & CEO

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first feature filmshot in Hollywood, The Squaw Man. It was a much differentworld then. At the time, some landlords refused to rent toactors, as they considered them to be unreliable.

What a difference 100 years make. Today, entertainment hasbecome California’s signature industry, employing more than100,000 people right here in Southern California andgenerating an economic impact in the billions of dollars. Overthe years, the industry evolved from film and expanded intoradio, television, recording, live performance, and now newmedia and technology.

Of course, other states and nations took notice of our success, and have been fighting for an increasing piece of the pie. TheHollywood Chamber of Commerce, over its 92-year history, hasbeen a strong advocate for the entertainment industry. We arepleased to be able to play a leading role in organizing today’sconference. As the symbolic home of the Industry, we feel aresponsibility to ensure that the Industry has a bright futurehere in Southern California.

We express appreciation to the many sponsors of today’sconference, and especially to Variety, whose assistance wasinvaluable in bringing things together, and to the HollywoodMuseum for stepping up a second year as our LuncheonSponsor. We thank those who have spent countless hours inputting together the conference, and we thank our panelistsand speakers for taking time out of their busy schedules toparticipate.

And of course, we thank YOU for taking the time to attend and showyour support of our efforts to advance the Entertainment Industry.
