Why is it essential to manage research data effectively?
2 8th January 2013 Steering Group Meeting
This is the point we began discussing visual arts research data at the first Steering Group meeting almost a year ago...
What is visual arts
research data?
• “it is never a smooth and
homogenous process but a fluid,
'wet' and folded, if not at times
messy, fuzzy and tumultuous."
(Gray and Delday 2010, cited in
Mey 2010)
• [qualitative research is] “difficult
to define clearly”
(Denzin and Lincoln 2005)

Definitions of visual arts research data?
8th January 2013 Steering Group Meeting 4
Anything which is used or created to generate new knowledge
and interpretations. ‘Anything’ may be objective or subjective;
physical or emotional; persistent or ephemeral; personal or
public; explicit or tacit; and is consciously or unconsciously
referenced by the researcher at some point during the course
of their research. Research data may or may not lead to a
research output, which regardless of method of presentation, is
a planned public statement of new knowledge or interpretation.
Statement written by Leigh Garrett to encourage discussion
after the 14th September ‘Managing the Material’ workshop.

‘KAPTUR’ing the benefits Benefit Evidence to be gathered and how it will be presented.
Improved rate of compliance with funder and institutional requirements
Track DMP creation at each institution, but with the provision that this is also dependent on available funding opportunities for researchers. To be presented as section in report.
Improved practice indicated by the adoption of an RDM policy
Institutional perspective from the role of the Project Officer on the benefits of the adoption of an RDM policy. Four case studies to be published.
Improved awareness of the issues involved in RDM
Benchmarking of all KAPTUR events and training. Information to be analysed and presented as section in report.
Increased numbers of findable research data/datasets from each institution
This will be tracked during the project if possible, but as discussed is more likely to be reported post-project due to the pilot nature of the technical infrastructure.
Improved user understanding of RDM
Qualitative information gathered through meetings, events, and the Environmental Assessment report. Mini-case studies in the form of blog posts or similar.
Improved organisation RDM practice/risk management
Cardio Lite quiz on institutional RDM, benchmarked by being re-run at end of project. Section in report.
