Whit Babcock was officially announced as the Uni-versity of Cincinnati’s 14th Director of Athletics on Oct. 22, 2011.

Babcock, a former college baseball player, joined the Bearcats following five years at the University of Missouri, where he served as the executive as-sociate director of athletics.

The Bearcats’ leader has initiated a new administra-tive structure within the department, proposed a comprehensive vision and capital campaign for athletic facility enhancement including an $86-mil-lion renovation and expansion to Nippert Stadium, set forth a scholarship enhancement plan for Olympic sports, crafted a three-year strategic plan for all facets of the program, hired head coaches in football, baseball, men’s track and field, lacrosse, volleyball and women’s soccer and implemented numerous external relations strategies to connect and engage with Bearcats’ alumni, donors, fans, and students.

His background in fundraising, marketing, pro-motions, ticket sales, licensing and multimedia partnerships were key attributes in support of his hiring. In his introductory press conference, Bab-cock cited three guiding principles for his vision for the athletic department’s future: commitment to

comprehensive excellence, centering the depart-ment’s focus on the student-athlete experience, and engaging the community.

The department operates under Babcock’s ONE TEAM philosophy which is centered on the core values of Integrity, Respect, Determination and Ex-cellence working together as 547 student-athletes, 150 staff, 19 sports and ONE TEAM.

Over the past year, Babcock has implemented numerous changes in the academic area aimed at enhancing the student-athlete experience, reinstated and enhanced scholarship funding to Olympic sports, added men’s indoor track and field as the department’s 19th sport and streamlined his executive team to ensure better lines of com-munications across the department and University community.

A native of Harrisonburg, Va., Babcock lettered four seasons in baseball at James Madison University and served as team captain his senior year. He earned his bachelor’s degree from JMU in 1992. In 1996, he received his master’s in sports manage-ment from West Virginia University.

He and his wife, Kelly, have three sons: Andrew, Brett and Eli.

Gettler Stadium is the home for both the University of Cincinnati men’s and women’s soccer teams, as well as the men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams.

In the summer of 2012, the playing surface at Gettler Stadium was replaced with Field-Turf Revolution. The new, top-of-the-line monofilament surface offers the traditional FieldTurf surface, but with more of a soccer blend that incorporates longer and thicker blades of artificial grass compared to those used for football.

The facility was renovated following the 2002-03 academic year and was named in rec-ognition of the gift by Ben and Dee Gettler to the Richard E. Lindner Varsity Village.

The restorations included a regulation-sized soccer field with a FieldTurf Pro playing surface, which is sanctioned by FIFA, the international governing body of soccer, for all levels of play except the World Cup finals and semifinals.

The upgrades also included a new eight-lane, 400-meter track, permanent grandstand seating for 1,400, concession stands and restrooms, team rooms and a press box. These enhancements allowed Cincinnati to host the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Prior to the renovations made possible by the Gettlers, the facility also had a facelift in 2000 that saw the installation of new lights and a new scoreboard with message center.

CINCINNATI WOMEN’S SOCCER ∙ 17

Neil Stafford was named the fifth head coach in the history of University of Cincinnati women’s soccer by UC director of athletics Whit Babcock on Nov. 26, 2012.

Stafford arrived at UC from Central Michigan Univer-sity, where he has spent the last four years, including the past two as head coach, and eight seasons as the

head coach at Assumption (Mass.) College. His overall coaching record in 10 seasons is 102-71-9.

In his second season with CMU, Stafford guided the team a 15-7-1 record and the Mid-American Conference’s first at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Michigan in the first round in overtime, 2-1. CMU finished as the MAC regular-season and tournament runners-up, allowing the fewest goals in conference play (six) and posting the most shutouts (six).

Stafford’s players earned a plethora of honors in 2012, headlined by Bailey Brandon earning MAC Defensive Player of the Year. Brandon joined four others on the All-MAC First Team, while three Chippewas received MAC All-Freshman honors. Brandon and goalkeeper Stefanie Turner earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors for the second consecutive year.

In his first season at the helm, CMU posted one of the most successful seasons in program history. The Chippewas finished with a 15-3-3 record for a school-record .786 winning percentage. CMU’s three losses in 2011 were the fewest in a single season in program history. The Chippewas ranked fifth in the country in goals-against average in 2011, allow-ing just 0.41 goals per contest. Their seven goals allowed in the regular season set a MAC record, breaking the conference’s previous record of 12.

Stafford mentored five All-MAC selections in 2011, including four first-team selections and MAC Defen-sive Player of the Year Liesel Toth. Just as impres-sively, six players were named Capitol One/CoSIDA Academic All-District V selections, including three first-team selections, also the most in program history.

Stafford’s arrival to Central Michigan as an assistant coach in 2009 coincided with the program’s two-year reign of the Mid-American Conference.

The Chippewas finished the 2010 campaign repeating as regular season and MAC tournament champions, earning their second-straight NCAA tournament berth. The Chippewas produced four first-team All-MAC selections, three All-freshman selections and eight Academic All-MAC selections during Stafford’s second season as an assistant coach. CMU became one of two teams in MAC history to win 10 conference games and earn 30 points since the league went to an 11-match format.

In Stafford’s first season with CMU, the Chippewas won their first Mid-Amer-ican Conference title behind a defense that led the nation with 19 shutouts. CMU went 17-4-3 and posted an unblemished 9-0-2 record in MAC play, be-coming the first team in conference history to post an unbeaten league record.

Prior to his time as an assistant at CMU, Stafford spent eight seasons as the head women’s soccer coach at Assumption, where he is the program’s all-time winningest coach with a 72-61-15 ledger.

At Assumption, he was named the Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 after guiding the Greyhounds to their first NE-10 conference final, NCAA Division II Tournament berth and NCAA Regional final appearance. Assumption finished the season 14th in the nation with a final record of 15-6. Stafford’s squad followed up the breakthrough 2004 campaign with another NCAA Tournament appearance in 2005, finishing 15-4-4 and returning to the NCAA Regional finals, climbing as high as third in the nation.

Stafford arrived at Assumption in 2000 as associate head coach of both the men’s and women’s soccer programs. Assumption set a men’s team record for wins (13), earned a second straight Northeast-10 Conference playoff berth and then won the ECAC Division II championship.

Stafford attended Norwich University, compet-ing in both tennis and soccer, and was named an all-region NESCAC player before transferring to Southern New Hampshire. He led the Penmen to a two-year record of 29-4-4 and then joined the coaching staff as an assistant coach for three years (1995-97), during which the team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. He also played professionally with the Boston Storm of the USL.

Stafford was named the Director of Operations with the Boston Renegades (W-League) in 1998 and was also Director of the W-1 National Championships in Boston that year. He later served as the head as-sistant coach of the Boston Renegades under Peter Bradley (1999-2001). The Renegades advanced to three national final fours and won two W-League National Championships in his final three years. His U-18 Renegades were the national runner-ups

in 2000. Stafford also worked with Seacoast United Soccer Club in Hampton, N.H., as the Girls Coaching Director (2002-05). In the summer of 2004, Staf-ford’s Seacoast United Girls 15 squad won its first Super Y-League National Championship.

Stafford earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern New Hampshire in 1996 while majoring in sociology.

Gary Curneen joined the University of Cincinnati women’s soccer coaching staff in January 2013 after serving the past nine seasons as the head coach for the Wingate University women’s soccer program, where he compiled an overall record of 95-48-8.

Curneen led the 2012 Bulldogs to a 14-3-1 overall record and their first NCAA tournament at-large bid. The Bulldogs went 13-1-1 in the regular season, going 8-1 in conference play for the second straight year and advancing to the South Atlantic Conference championship match for the third straight season.

Twenty of Curneen’s student-athletes earned All-SAC honors during his Wingate tenure, including: 2012 SAC Player of the Year Jade Montgomery; 2011 All-America Kelly Adams; and defender Heather Schlick, who was named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team. One of Curneen’s former student-athletes, Kerstin Williams.

The 2011 season was a historic year for Wingate, winning a program-record 16 matches. The Bulldogs went 16-4 on the year and defeated fifth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne in the SAC championship match to earn their first SAC tournament title and, subsequently, their first NCAA Tournament bid. Curneen held the previous program-record mark of 14 wins set in 2008.

In 2010, Curneen led the Bulldogs to a 13-3-3 overall record, and 7-1-1 in the SAC, which was good for a third-place finish in the conference, and their first appearance in the SAC tournament championship game.

Curneen served two seasons as assistant men’s soccer coach at Wingate prior to taking over the reins of the women’s soccer program.

In addition to his coaching ledger at Wingate, Curneen has served the Union County Soccer Association as a team trainer for various age groups (U-9 to U-16). He has been an assistant director in the Olympic Development Program for the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association (NCYSA), directing all aspects of training for U-11 girls.

Curneen possesses an “A” coaching license from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). He holds the premier diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Curneen was a marketing intern for the Boston Bulldogs of the A League and the Boston Renegades of the W-League for two summers.

As a Bulldog student-athlete, Curneen earned four letters in men’s soccer. Curneen helped Wingate earn its first NCAA Division II playoff berth in 1999. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree (MBA) at Wingate University.

ASSISTANT COACH GARY CURNEEN2013 COACHING STAFF

Nate Lie joined the University of Cincinnati women’s soccer program in January 2013 as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator after spending the previous four seasons in the same capacity for his alma mater, Miami University. During his four-year stint at Miami, the RedHawks compiled

an overall record of 54-26-5, including a 25-14-5 Mid-American Conference mark.

Most recently in 2012, Lie helped guide Miami to the MAC regular-season and tournament championships; as well a trip to the second round of the NCAA Championship after the RedHawks went 20-3-1 record (10-0-1 MAC).

Sixteen RedHawks garnered All-MAC honors during Lie’s

tenure at Miami, including forward Jess Kodiak, who in 2012 was named a NSCAA third-team All-America selection and the MAC Offensive Player of the Year.

In his first year on the sidelines, Lie helped lead Miami to the Mid-American Conference tournament championship game.

As a student-athlete at Miami from 1996-2000, Lie was a two-time Academic All-MAC selection for the men’s soccer program, earning First-Team Academic All-MAC honors in 1998, in addition to Academic All-Ohio accolades that same season. In 1997, Lie earned Second-Team All-MAC honors.

Lie graduated from Miami in 2000 with bachelor’s degrees in economics and finance.
