The Sand Sharks begin the season as the favorites to win The Sun Conference title, and they’ve cracked the top 25 for the first time, checking in at

No. 21 in the preseason poll. Defending champion Webber International is among the top challengers in the conference, along with a tough St. Thomas

team, and conference new-comer Thomas has an accom-plished program. USCB coach Ty Rietkovich also has his eye on two first-year programs in Embry-Riddle and Southeast-ern, both of whom have hired accomplished coaches and are expected to be competi-tive right away, much like the Sand Sharks a year ago.

CATCHERThe Sand Sharks return their

top two catchers from a year ago in sophomore Amanda Brown and senior Caitlin Vaughn, and they have tons of depth behind that duo with a number of versatile play-ers who can fill in behind the plate, including freshman Whitley Martin.

2013 Season preview

Whatever opposing teams thought of the University of South Carolina Beau-fort softball team going into the Sand

Sharks’ inaugural season, you can be sure those preconceived notions have been replaced with new ones entering USCB’s second campaign — new ones like respect, and perhaps even fear. The Sand Sharks proved to be far more than a typical first-year program in 2012, winning 37 games, fin-ishing second in The Sun Conference and receiv-ing votes in the final NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll. And after returning virtually every key player from that team and adding several key transfers and freshmen, it’s safe to expect even bigger things in 2013.

2013 Season previewinFiEldThe infield is loaded with

talent and USCB is deep at every position. Sophomores Taylor Triplett and Maddie Byrd return after splitting time at first base last sea-son, and returning starter Mariaha Sanborn is back at the other corner. All-Sun Conference second baseman Katie Rietkovich also returns, and Northwest Florida State transfer C.J. Browder will push for a starting spot at shortstop along with return-ing starter Chelsey Blas-ingame and senior paige Adams. Sophomore Sam Bo-land can play either corner spot and Florence-Darlington Tech transfer Alexandria Sim-mons provides a big bat and the versatility to play any-

where on the infield. Fresh-man Kayla logue will back up at second. Victoria Hilton, a strong hitting junior, is expected to miss the season because of injury.

oUTFiEldThe outfield also is crowd-

ed with a number of players capable of performing at a high level. All-Sun Confer-ence performers Melanie Goolsby and Shelby Zipperer are back in right and center, and sophomore Sammi Shaffren returns after start-ing much of the season in left a year ago. Blasingame also could see time at the corner spots and fellow sophomore lauren Hill provides terrific defense in center. Freshmen Martin and

2013 Season preview

Missy Hughes will compete for playing time at the corners along with junior Bekah Herty and sophomore Jordan Abercrombie.

piTCHinGThe Sand Sharks look to be

outstanding in the circle once again, as Kristy Cook returns after an All-Sun Conference campaign as a freshman in which she tossed five no-hitters, one of which was a perfect game. Cook will have competi-tion for the title of staff ace, though, as sophomore Caitlin Campbell joins the Sand Sharks after a tremendous freshman season at Armstrong Atlantic State. Freshman Ashlie layman joins the staff after a standout high school career, and senior Becca Hewitt transfers in from Coastal Georgia to provide

much-needed depth. Return-ers Caroline pastre and Cara Jamerson are recovering from injuries to begin the season, but Pastre hopes to return and bolster the staff while Jamer-son is expected to redshirt.

It’s apparent now that Riet-kovich’s gut feeling was right — the team he had spent a year and a half building turned out to be something special, as the Sand Sharks compiled an impressive 37-11 record and finished sec-ond in The Sun Conference. The Sand Sharks became

known for a potent lineup — they ranked second in the nation in runs per game (8.638) and fourth in team

batting average (.367) — and a dominant pitching duo — freshman kristy Cook tossed five no-hitters and she and sophomore Caroline Pastre threw back-to-back perfect games in a doubleheader against Fisher College.USCB landed four players

on the All-Sun Conference squad — Cook, katie Rietk-ovich, Melanie Goolsby and Shelby Zipperer — and had three players earn NFCA Second-Team All-District hon-ors — Rietkovich, Zipperer and Taylor Triplett. The first-year program

notched wins against NCAA Division II teams Newberry College and Malone Univer-sity.Most important, the team

performed just as well in the classroom, earning the NAIA Scholar Team distinc-tion with an overall team GPA of 3.22.

Leading up to the inaugural season of Sand Shark Softball, coach Ty Rietkovich

insisted he had not formed any expectations for how his first-year team would perform. But his excitement was evident.

Champions of Character

in the nAiA, a dedication to leadership development is balanced with sports accomplishment. A trailblazer in providing equal opportunity for all student-

athletes. an expectation of ethical behavior, fairness in competition, access to athletic scholar-ship, sportsmanship and leadership development. At the core of all of this — character.

the seed of the nAiA began in 1937 with the tip-off of a men’s basketball tournament that has become the longest running basketball tournament in the country, celebrating 75 years in 2012. out of the tournament grew the nAiA, an association of close to 300 member schools and more than 60,000 student-athletes.

Since 1937, the nAiA has administered programs and championships in proper balance with the overall educa-

tional experience. In 2000, the naIa reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport. through Champions of Character, the naIa seeks to create an envi-ronment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and

spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five core val-ues: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.

most recently, the association opened the doors to the nAiA eligibility Center, where prospective student-athletes are

evaluated for academic and athletic eligibility. it delivers on our larger promise of integrity by leveling the playing field, guiding student-athlete success, and ensuring fair competi-tion. providing student-athletes a chance to connect with naIa schools and coaches helps them make the best decision to prepare them for success in both college and athletics.

the mission of the national Association of intercollegiate Athletics (nAiA) Champions of Character program is to provide training to ensure character is demonstrated

through conduct as well as competition, so students know, do and value the right thing in all areas of life.

research shows that the longer a student spends in sports, their social reasoning - sacrificing for the good of the team - rises, however, their moral reasoning skills - doing what is fair, just, honest, and noble - decline. the result is athletes are willing to lie, cheat, and steal to get their teammates ahead.

through the Champions of Character program, the naIa is promoting five core character values that are crucial to the development of our youth: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. Over time, valuable life lessons — working together for team goals, building personal strength of purpose

to achieve victory, and sharing in the proper winning (or los-ing) spirit-can be instilled in sports participants.

at the same time, the expectations that coaches and parents have for the athletes they support have led to conduct that detracts from the sports experience. poor demonstrations of

character are easily copied by young ath-letes. However, when athletes develop their skills in an environment in which adults’ actions foster character-driven conduct, they are bound to do the same. inherent to the Champions of Character process is the belief that character is handed down from one generation to the next. When those who provide athletic opportunities are willing to

commit to character-driven athletics and put the athlete first both the game and society overall benefit.

today, the naIa is committed to making a difference in the culture of sport. Are you?
