mISSIONIt is our mission to physically and mentally prepare the student-athlete for the rigors of collegiate athletics, by implementing professionally designed, scientifically sound training programs, designed specifically to reduce the incidence of injury and help each team and student-athlete reach their full athletic potential .

PHILOSOPHYWe believe that strength and conditioning is crucial to the complete development of the student-athlete . The philosophy of our strength and conditioning program is based on the belief that what occurs in the weight room and field transfers to the

playing surface . We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing athleticism . We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude, accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning program .

At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and conditioning program . The strength and conditioning program at UND is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic teams . The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and body composition of each student-athlete . The goal of the strength staff is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential throughout their career while staying injury free .

Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the program and facilities . Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and one graduate assistant coach to assist him .

Together they direct and monitor the training of over 400 student-athletes in 20 sports at UND . UND also boasts some of the finest strength training facilities around . The facilities include weight rooms at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center, Memorial Stadium, and the Hyslop Sports Center .

Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete spending as much time on physical development as any other part of their sport throughout the year . Student-athletes follow either off-season or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the athlete and sport . Off-season programs are five days a week, summer months included .

Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising them . In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff .

One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics is that injuries do occur . However, every student-athlete from UND athletic teams are under excellent care thanks to the UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its umbrella of staff, facilities and training .

With a staff of 11 faculty athletic trainers, three graduate assistant athletic trainers and 30 athletic training students headed by director of sports medicine Steve Westereng, UND student-athletes are in good hands, returning them quickly and safely to participation .

The UND Division of Sports Medicine was formed in 1990 . Additionally, the bachelor

of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports Medicine was founded . The athletic training education program was the first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences .

UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field of athletic training . Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the student-athlete . Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC) .

The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent individuals getting them back into action .

In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, a student must complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and have a minimum GPA of 2 .75 .

The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of orthopedic injuries . UND student-athletes, as well as the general public, utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve range of motion of injuries . Many of the injuries seen in the Center for Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues . The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional athletes .

HISTORY And TRAdITIOn

The University of North Dakota boasts a proud history of varsity athletics nicknames . UND’s first official athletics nickname was the “Flickertails,” although its origin remains somewhat a mystery . The nickname made its first public appearance in a Grand Forks Herald account of UND’s football loss to Minnesota on Oct . 8, 1904, 15 years after UND’s first athletics contest was played . According to Lee Bohnet’s A Century of UND Sports, “The author was not identified, but there is strong evidence the nickname was coined by a Minneapolis sportswriter who may have covered the game for the Herald . The writer lauded the fighting spirit of the North Dakota players .”

In 1911, UND’s student body officially adopted “Flickertails” as its athletics nickname . UND would remain known as the “Flickertails” (as well, unofficially, as the “Nodaks”) for a third of a century, establishing an early athletics history .

In the fall of 1930, the university adopted the nickname “Sioux” for its varsity teams following a successful renaming campaign by the Dakota Student, UND’s student newspaper . The word “Fighting” was later added, and UND would be known as the “Fighting Sioux” until the summer of 2012 .

The university utilized several”Fighting Sioux” logos throughout the decades, perhaps most notably the green geometric logo introduced in 1976 and the most recent full-color logo was unveiled in 1999 . The former was designed by an artist at the UND News Bureau, while the latter was created by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien .

The University of North Dakota officially retired its longtime “Fighting Sioux” nickname and logo prior to the 2012-13 athletics season .

UND’s varsity athletics teams will operate without an official nickname until 2015 . The university’s varsity athletics teams will be referred to as “the University of North Dakota,” “North Dakota,” or “UND .”

Following the University’s first athletic competition in 1889, UND’s earliest teams were known unofficially as the “Nodaks” (pictured above is the 1896 football team). The “Flickertails” nickname made its first appearance in a 1904 Grand Forks Herald article and was officially adopted in 1911.

The University of North Dakota adopted the interlocking ND as its official logo during the summer of 2012 following the retirement of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo. The interlocking ND will be utilized until 2015, when a new athletics nickname is selected.

UND’s most recent Fighting Sioux logo, designed by noted Native American artist and UND alum Bennett Brien, was unveiled in 1999. The logo was named the No. 1 hockey logo in the world by The Hockey News in 2009.

The geometric Fighting Sioux logo was introduced in 1976 and remained in use through the 1999-2000 season.

The current University of North Dakota logo has been in use since the close of Centennial year activities in 1984. It serves as the official logo of the University, but typically is not used for athletics purposes.

ATHLETICS dIRECTOR

Brian Faison is in his fifth year as athletics director at the University of North Dakota . Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008 .

In leading UND Athletics through the Division I transition, alumni and fan support have continued to grow: Champions Club and endowment giving have enjoyed a sixth straight record year; volleyball had a third record-breaking season at the turnstile, while women’s and men’s hockey both finished second in the nation in home average attendance .

Competitively, UND teams again enjoyed outstanding seasons resulting in two conference regular season championships, four conference post-season tournaments championships, three All-Americans, a national coach of the year, a record third consecutive Broadmoor Trophy, a national player of the year finalist and a second place finish in the all-sports standings of the Great West Conference .

In the classroom, student-athletes continued their tradition of academic excellence: a record number of student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll for the fall and spring semesters; women’s basketball, women’s swimming and diving, women’s golf and men’s and women’s track and field all recognized nationally for their academic performance, two student-athletes were named Academic All-Americans and one student-athlete received a prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship (the program’s 34th recipient) .

Kevin Galbraith will guide the University of North Dakota into its first year of Big Sky Conference membership in 2012-13 after a highly successful first season at the helm of the track and field program .

Galbraith, who was named head coach at UND on July 19, 2011, led UND’s women’s team to runner-up finishes at both the 2011 Great West Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships, while the men’s squad placed third at both championship meets .

Under Galbraith’s tutelage, UND student-athletes claimed nine individual GWC titles, highlighted by senior Emily Emerson’s GWC record time of 4:27 .29 in the 1,500-meters, the final race of her decorated career . Mikaela Hirst (triple jump), Taylor Brett (pole vault), Roman Waldera (discus), Jesse Fenstermacher (800-meters), Shawn Johnson (shot put) and Matthew Harris (pole vault) also captured GWC outdoor titles, while Brett and Christine Weinreich (weight throw) won GWC indoor championships .

Senior sprinter Chris Stoks won UND’s prestigious Glenn “Red” Jarrett Male Athlete of the Year Award (all sports), senior Tyler Rose received the GWC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Sportsmanship Award, senior Lindsay Anderson was named the GWC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and freshman Chantel Urban was named the GWC Female Freshman of the Year .

During Galbraith’s first year at UND, his student-athletes were equally prolific in the classroom, as both the men’s and women’s squads were named 2011-12 Division I All-Academic teams by the U .S . Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) . UND’s women’s team boasted a cumulative 3 .45 grade point average to tie for 13th among the 171 Division I women’s teams honored . On the men’s side, UND owned a 3 .19 cumulative GPA to tie for 31st among 85 honored teams .

Individually, Anderson was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) . She was joined on the Academic All-District Team by her UND teammate, junior Kirsten Haas .

During the fall of 2012, Galbraith and his staff unveiled a new addition to the program’s practice facilities: the Gill NCAA

Double Ring Tall hammer cage . The first-ever hammer cage at UND, it is the same model that was used at the 2008 Olympic trials hammer throw and is built to the specifications required to host an NCAA championship . The cage, which also enhances training safety for UND’s student-athletes, puts the program’s throwing facilities on par with nearly every school in the nation .

An experienced collegiate track and field coach with a diverse coaching background, Galbraith came to UND after a highly successful seven-year tenure as head men’s and women’s track and field coach at the University of Northern Colorado, where he guided the Bears through their transition from Division II to Division I and into the Big Sky Conference .

“Coach Galbraith brings a unique vantage point to our track and field program, having led a program through the transition from Division II to Division I and leading that same program into our future conference home the Big Sky,” said UND Athletics Director Brian Faison at the time of Galbraith’s hiring . “Kevin’s coaching resume is outstanding .”

During his time at UNC, Galbraith’s student-athletes set 15 school records and added 68 marks to the program’s men’s and women’s top-10 lists . UNC also boasted several significant milestones, including its first NCAA Division I qualifiers in school history (all sports), the first NCAA national championship female qualifier in school history, and the first Big Sky individual champions (all sports) in school history .

Galbraith also developed a comprehensive training and strength development plan for Amr Seoud, a Beijing Olympic qualifier . Seoud trained with the Bears in 2010 and went on to set two Egyptian national records and win the Gold medal in the 200 meters at the 2010 African Championships .

Prior to his arrival at UNC, Galbraith spent five seasons (1999 to 2004) as an assistant track and field coach at Long Beach State University, where he coached sprints and hurdles . In four of his five seasons, he coached the top three finishers at the conference championship in the men’s 400 meters, and he also had the top freshmen finishers at the Big West Championship in both the men’s and women’s 400 meters his final three years .

Galbraith is a 1981 graduate of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications and was the cross country team’s most valuable runner as a senior . He served as a volunteer cross country coach at LMU from 1986 to 1993, and received a master’s degree in communication in 1991 .

In 1995, Galbraith was named head track and field coach at Los Angeles Valley College, where he spent two seasons . He also served two stints (1993-95, 1997-99) as assistant track coach with Track West, a USA Track and Field (USATF) national club program based out of Santa Monica, Calif .

Galbraith has also served as the meet manager of the Southern California Twilight Distance Qualifier in Los Angeles, and the Southern California Cross Country Championships in Walnut, Calif .

CROSS COunTRY COACH dICK CLAY

One of the longest-tenured coaches in the history of North Dakota Athletics, the 2012-13 season marks the 28th year of Dick Clay’s distinguished coaching career at UND .

Clay serves as men’s and women’s cross country head coach, as well as men’s and women’s track and field associate head coach . Clay had doubled as UND’s head women’s track and field coach from 1985 to 2011, as well as interim men’s head track and field coach in 2011, until a restructuring of the program’s coaching staff .

In 2012, Clay guided UND cross country through its first season of Big Sky Conference membership . UND’s women’s team placed seventh and the men’s team eighth, and both squads got their first taste of a Division I championship at the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo . UND’s women’s and men’s teams placed 22nd and 24th, respectively, at regionals to finish ahead of programs such as Nebraska, Creighton and North Dakota State .

On Sept . 10, 2012, UND made school history when the men’s team earned its first-ever appearance in the Division I regional rankings . That week, UND was ranked No . 14 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Midwest Region rankings .

The 2011 cross country season was highlighted by outstanding athletic and academic accomplishments . Serving as host of the of the Great West Conference Championship, UND placed second despite being without the services of 2010 GWC Athlete of the Year Lindsay Anderson, who redshirted the season . In Anderson’s absence, senior Emily Emerson led the way with a fifth-place finish and all-conference first team honors . She was joined on the All-GWC team by freshman Erin Wysocki, who placed sixth and claimed GWC Freshman of the Year honors .

On the men’s side, senior Tyler Rose capped his distinguished career by earning All-GWC Second Team accolades with an eighth-place finish . Following the year, Rose was named the GWC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Sportsmanship Award .

In the classroom, five student-athletes garnered academic all-conference honors, three from the men’s team and two from the women’s team .

In 2011, Clay mentored several track and field record-breakers, conference champions, and conference scorers .

On the women’s side, senior Lindsay Anderson won GWC indoor titles in the 3,000 and 5,000-meters, setting a conference record in the latter, and was named GWC Indoor Female Athlete of the Year . UND student-athletes who set school records included Christine Weinreich (hammer throw, indoor weight throw), Jessica Butler (100-meter hurdles, 60-meter hurdles), the 800-meter relay team of Brittney Bolstad, Paige

Kuplic, Mikaela Hirst and Sarah Fegley, and the distance medley relay team of Anderson, Megan Gray, Emily Emerson and Savana Weller .

On the men’s side, senior Josh LaBlanc broke the oldest record in school history when he ran the 10,000-meters in 30:05 .24, toppling the previous record set by Arjan Gelling in 1968 by 25 seconds . He also set the school record in the 5K and the conference record in the 3,000-meters 8:31 .15 at the GWC Indoor Championship . Following the season, LaBlanc was named the 2010-11 GWC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year .

UND’s cross country teams enjoyed a superlative 2010 season, highlighted by junior season Lindsay Anderson winning the Great West Conference Cross Country championship and earning GWC Most Valuable Runner honors . Anderson and teammate Emily Emerson were both named to the All-GWC first team after leading the Sioux to a third-place team finish . On the men’s side, UND placed sixth at the conference meet .

The 2010 track and field season was a memorable one for the Sioux women, as Clay’s student-athletes set numerous school records . At the GWC Indoor Championship, junior Jessica Butler won the 60-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 8 .98 seconds and led the Sioux to a third-place finish .At the GWC Outdoor Championship, Brenny was the runner-up in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs .

Also during the outdoor season, sophomore Emily Emerson was twice named GWC Athlete of the Week . UND’s quartet of Mikaela Hirst, Paige Kuplic, Cheri Boyer and Taryn Anderson broke an 11-year old record in the 800-meter relay at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational . Several Sioux athletes also recorded times, throws and jumps that have cracked UND’s all-time top-10 lists .

Clay’s women’s cross country team earned team and individual runner-up honors at the 2009 Great West Conference Championship; the Sioux finished second in the team standings while senior Brittany

Brenny earned her second straight all-conference first team nod by taking second in the individual standings . Brenny was joined on the all-conference team by teammate and second-team selection Katherine Enabnit .

In 2008-09, UND’s first as a Division I program, Clay guided the Sioux to a third-place finish at the inaugural Great West Conference Cross Country Championship, where three of his runners earned all-conference honors: Brenny (first team), Mandy Gefroh (first) and Emily Emerson (second) .

Clay’s track and field team finished fourth at the 2009 GWC Outdoor Championship, highlighted by individual conference titles by Jessica Clausnitzer (pole vault) and Kristi Dahlheimer (3,000-meter steeplechase) . UND also placed fourth at the 2009 GWC Indoor Championship, led by a pair of individual titles from Clausnitzer, a two-time Division II All-American, in the 60-meter hurdles and the pole vault .

In May 2008, Clay coached Heidi Evans to a national title in the 1,500-meter run at the Division II national championships . With the title, Evans became the second individual women’s track & field national champion in UND school history and the first Fighting Sioux women’s outdoor champion . The only other UND women’s track national individual title came in 1994, when former UND runner Marie Crep won an NCAA national title in the 800-meter run in the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships .

A hallmark of Clay’s coaching career at UND has been academic succes, and the 2009-10 was as successful as any . Clay’s women’s track and field team boasted the sixth-highest grade point average (3 .5) in Division I last season, earning the team 2010 Division I Women’s All-Academic Track and Field Team honors by the U .S . Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) .

ASSISTAnT COACHES

Assistant coach Peter Miller is in his second season as a member of North Dakota’s track and field coaching staff and works with the program’s throwers .

Miller’s throwers were dominant from beginning to end in 2011-12, breaking eight school records and winning three Great West Conference individual titles .

Shawn Johnson (twice) and Jakob Bissell each broke UND’s hammer throw record on the men’s side, while on the women’s side, Megan Storstad (twice) and Christine Weinreich each took their turns breaking the school hammer throw record . Weinreich also twice broke her own school record in the weight throw .

Miller mentored Weinreich (indoor, weight), Johnson (outdoor, shot) and Roman Waldera (outdoor, discus) to individual conference titles, while Chantel Urban garnered GWC Freshman of the Year accolades .

Miller also played a key role in the fundraising and construction of a new addition to the program’s practice facilities during the fall of 2012: the Gill NCAA Double Ring Tall hammer cage .

Miller came to UND from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, where he enjoyed a highly successful three-year tenure as an assistant coach working with throws and combined events . He began his coaching career at UWRF after a standout athletic career at the University of Minnesota .

Miller coached NCAA Division III qualifiers in each of his three seasons at UWRF, with his top student-athlete placing as high as third . His student-athletes placed 1-2 in the women’s javelin at the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) and broke school records in the men’s weight and hammer throws .

In his two seasons’ coordinating the Falcons’ strength and conditioning program, Miller’s student-athletes broke 27 school records and earned 13 All-America awards . He has also been heavily involved in track and field winter camps as both a director and instructor .

Miller also coordinated the UWRF track program’s $10,000-per-year fundraising efforts .

A 2008 graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, Miller was a three-year letterwinner for the Golden Gophers and served as a team captain during his senior year . He was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a five-time University of Minnesota Scholar Student-Athlete .

Miller is currently pursuing his master’s degree in business administration .

Kevin Galbraith’s first season as head track and field coach at North Dakota proved to be a resounding success .

In UND’s final season in the Great West Con-ference, Galbraith guided his women’s team to runner-up finishes at both the GWC Indoor and Outdoor Championships, while his men’s squad finished third at both . Additionally, UND student-athletes captured nine individu-al Great West titles and broke multiple school records .

In his second season at UND, Galbraith now faces the challenge of leading the program into its first season of Big Sky Conference membership .

THROWSUND’s throwers delivered a dominant 2012 season and Galbraith has the luxury of return-ing five veterans from that group, led by a pair of GWC outdoor champions in juniors Shawn Johnson (Eveleth, Minn .) and Roman Walde-ra (Minot, N .D .) . Johnson won the outdoor ti-tle in the shot put and was also the runner-up in the indoor shot put and the outdoor discus, while Waldera won an outdoor conference title in the discus .

A third returning letterwinner, Jakob Bissell (Jr ., Plymouth, N .H .), set a school record in the hammer throw .

Veterans Alex Hickel (Jr ., Grand Forks, N .D .) and Tate messmer (So ., Ortonville, Minn .) also return, while freshmen Keaton Hanevold (Thompson, N .D .), Cody mach (Faribault, Minn .), Zach Olson (Owatonna, Minn .) and Conrad Schwarzkopf (Bismarck, N .D .) will add considerable depth to a talented group .

DISTANCE/mID-DISTANCEJunior Jesse Fenstermacher (Hibbing, Minn .) leads this group after winning the 800-meters at the 2012 GWC Outdoor Championship, set-ting a school-record time of 1 minute, 50 .57 seconds in the process .

Freshman Sam Coulter (St . Cloud, Minn .) will also have the opportunity to contribute in the mid-distance events .

In the distance events, UND returns a multitude of talented veterans, incuding juniors Jerrod Braam (Pequot Lakes, Minn .), Kyle Economy (Victoria, Minn .), Dwight mandimika (Harare, Zimbabwe), Ross Nelson (Apple Valley, Minn .) and University of Minnesota Duluth transfer Sam Saccoman (Hibbing, Minn .), as well as sophomores mark Harries (Plymouth, Minn .), Nick Lindstrom (Shakopee, Minn .) and Nate Peterson (Horace, N .D .) .

Freshman Parker Wharram (Independence, Minn .) will also be in the mix .

SPRINTSChris Stoks (Sr ., Virginia, Minn .) overcame an early-season injury last year to claim UND’s Glenn “Red” Jarrett Male Athlete of the Year award (all sports) . Stoks, who redshirted the outdoor season, twice broke the school record in the 400-meters and went on to the GWC in-door championship in the same event .

Behind Stoks is a trio of newcomers, including Saint John’s University senior transfer Aaron Koenig (St . Cloud, Minn .), as well as freshmen Quinton Coleman (Duluth, Minn .) and Isaiah Frohling (Britton, S .D .) .

JUmPS/HURDLESmatthew Harris (Jr ., Sidney, Mont .) returns after winning the GWC outdoor champion-ship in the pole vault, while teammates Tyler Colling (So ., Forest Lake, Minn .) and Jordan Fisk (Jr ., Langdon, N .D .) also return after each scored in the pole vault at both the GWC In-door and Outdoor Championships . University of Mary junior transfer Kohl Koppinger (Dick-inson, N .D .) also joins the team this season .

UND also welcomes back sophomore Ryan Andert (Eagan, Minn .), who placed fifth in the high jump at the 2012 GWC Outdoor Champi-onship, while adding prep standout D’monte Farley (Cottage Grove, Minn .) .

Senior hurdler matthew mcCreary (Grand Forks, N .D .) will be looked upon to provide leadership and experience for a group that also includes freshmen Jimmy Evers (Grand Forks, N .D .) and John LeClerc (Grafton, N .D .) .

The 2012 season was one of new begin-nings for 28th-year head coach Dick Clay, who guided North Dakota’s cross country program through its first season of Big Sky Conference membership .

Under the tutelage of UND’s longest-tenured coach, UND’s men’s team placed eighth at the always-competitive Big Sky Championship .

UND also got its first taste of a Division I cham-pionship at the 2012 NCAA Midwest Regional in Springfield, Mo ., placing 22nd ahead of the likes of Nebraska, Creighton and North Dakota State .

On Sept . 10, 2012, UND made school history when the men’s team earned its first-ever ap-pearance in the Division I regional rankings . That week, UND was ranked No . 14 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Coun-try Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Midwest Region rankings .

That ranking came one week after UND opened the season with a double-dual victory over NDSU and South Dakota State at Bison Duals in Fargo .

UND’s September scheduled included a pair of third-place showings, first at the South Dakota State Classic (Sept . 14), then again two weeks later at the Montana Invitational (Sept . 28) .

The program held its lone home meet of the season when it hosted the annual Ron Pynn Invitational at Ray Richards Golf Course in Grand Forks .

The race was held on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in front of nearly 100 UND track and field and cross country alumni, many of whom ran in the race .

The includsion of alumni in the race was part of UND’s cross country/track and field re-union that also included a morning presenta-tion on the UND Athletics Complex, as well as an evening social .

Individually, UND was able to rely on several veteran runners throughout the season . Ju-nior Sam Saccoman (Hibbing, Minn .), a trans-fer from Minnesota Duluth, was UND’s top runner at three meets, while Kyle Economy (Jr ., Victoria, Minn .), Nate Peterson (So ., Hor-ace, N .D .) and team captain Ross Nelson (Jr ., Apple Valley, Minn .) each led the team once .

Saccoman was the team’s top runner at the Big Sky Conference Championship, while Nel-son took his turn in front of the pack at the NCAA Division I Midwest Regional .

In the classroom, Peterson, Adam Stainiger (Sr ., Chisholm, Minn .) and Parker Wharram (Fr ., Independence, Minn .) were named to the 2012 Fall Big Sky Conference Men’s All-Academic Cross Country Team .

BIg SKY COnFEREnCE

A new era in the Big Sky Conference begins in 2012-13 as the league enters its 50th year of athletic competition, and its 25th sponsoring women’s collegiate athletics .

The Division I Big Sky Conference welcomes the University of North Dakota and Southern Utah University into the fold as full members . Cal Poly and UC Davis join the league as af-filiate members in football, where the league competes at the Championship Subdivision level (formerly I-AA) .

The additions of North Dakota and Southern Utah give the stable Big Sky 11 full institu-tions and 13 football members . The current lineup includes four of the six charter mem-bers: Idaho State University, The University of Montana, Montana State University and Weber State . Northern Arizona enters its 43rd season in the Big Sky, giving the conference five members with at least 40 years of continu-ous membership .

Eastern Washington University joined the Big Sky Conference in 1987, followed by Portland State University and Sacramento State in 1996 . The Big Sky became a nine-team league in 2006 with the addition of the University of Northern Colorado .

The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a na-tional leader in the Football Championship Subdivision . Six times, Big Sky teams have won the Division I National Championship, in-cluding Eastern Washington in 2010 . A Big Sky team has played for the national champion-ship in three of the past four seasons .

The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members – Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State . Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona . Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members . The conference grew

to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington .

The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams . In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Port-land State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge . The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge de-parted in the spring of 2001 .

The Big Sky now includes nine states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Red River Valley of North Dakota . The league is represented along the entire west coast with institutions in Washington, Oregon and California . League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Ida-ho, Utah, Arizona and Colorado .

On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopt-ed by the six presidents of the charter mem-bers as the name of the new conference . The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A .B . (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont ., in 1947 entitled “The Big Sky .” Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promot-ed the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State . While on a track and field trip from Pocatello, Idaho, to Missoula, Mont ., legendary Dubby Holt of Idaho State saw a “Welcome to Big Sky Country” sign as his team entered Montana . Holt, and his athletes thought “Big Sky” would be a perfect name for the new conference . Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his col-umn dated Feb . 20, 1963 .

The Big Sky sponsors championships in 15 sports, including men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis . In addition, there are also championships in football, and women’s volleyball, golf and soccer . This upcoming spring, the Big Sky will sponsor a softball championship for the first time .

In 1988-89, the Big Sky Conference first be-gan sponsoring women’s sports . The former Mountain West Conference existed from 1982-88, sponsoring championships for women’s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men’s programs . The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women .

Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 18th year at the helm . Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson, who passed away in 2011 . Ste-phenson served the league for 14 years . Steve Belko was the commissioner from 1977-81, while John Roning held the post from 1971-77 . The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from 1963-71 .

By Jackie DeMolee, UND Athletics

Ron Pynn was an educator at the University of North Dakota for 29 years in political science, but he didn’t only shape the minds of students in the classroom . He has projected his love for track and field and cross country onto the programs at UND . Pynn has been a long time supporter of cross country and track

and field .

The Ron Pynn Invitational, UND’s annual cross country meet, was established in 2002 to honor Pynn for his many contributions to the teams, including travel-ling with the teams for support, working events and financially supporting the program . He said that he’s always had a passion for the sport and the student-athletes involved .

“It [running] takes a special brand of discipline,” said Pynn . “What drives them

[athletes] to run drives them to succeed in other areas of their life .”

This is only one of the many reasons Pynn feels so passionate about the program at UND .

“It’s been exciting each and every year,” said longtime UND men’s cross country and track and field head coach Mike Grandall, who retired fol-lowing the 2009-10 season . “It’s great to have him back .”

Pynn uses the Invitational as an opportunity to visit the University and friends .

“I think the world of the coaches,” he said . “The way they treat the ath-letes, but not just as UND athletes, but as students too .”

Pynn currently resides in Burlington, Vt ., but makes the trek back to UND each year for the Invitational .

Ray Richards Golf Course is home to the Ron Pynn Invitational . The course is set up as a 5K for women and 8K for men, providing a challenging route well-known in the Upper Midwest .

The Division I transition has changed the Invitational somewhat, but it doesn’t change the meaning behind the name of the event or how important the event is to the head coaches of the men’s and women’s cross country teams and Pynn .

The Ron Pynn Invitational was established in 2002 to honor his contributions to UND.

Ron Pynn

“What drives them to run drives them to succeed in other areas of life.”

— Ron Pynn

For the first time in 2012, the annual UND Ron Pynn Invitational included an alumni meet and reunion social. More than 100 track and field alumni attended the events.
