1.0 Dealership Technical Training Requirements
2013 Mazda Technical Training Guidelines 1
What’s New
Changes to requirements in Table 1.
Mazda Technical Training provides instructor-led training (ILT) and web-based training (WBT) courses for more than 2,400 Technicians at more than 630 Mazda dealerships nationwide. Our goal is to provide Technicians with the knowledge and skills to provide exceptional vehicle maintenance and servicing to Fix-It-Right-The-First-Time (FIRTFT). Table 1 lists the Technical Training Standards, which specifies the minimum number or percentage of Technicians at a dealership to be trained per instructor-led technical training course. Beginning February 1, 2013, Technicians must be trained in the area(s) for which dealers are seeking warranty reimbursement. Technical Training recommends dealers have enough trained Technicians to maintain a sufficient level of service if one or more Technicians leave the dealership. Refer to Section 2.2, Technician Certification Requirements, for descriptions of Mazda Technician levels and training requirements. Report 23 on MazdaState.com, Technician Certification Tracking Report, lists courses Technicians have attended so dealerships and District Service Managers (DSMs) can track progress with the Technical Training Standards.

2.0 Technician Certification / Recognition
2013 Mazda Technical Training Guidelines 2
Mazda encourages Technicians to become Master Technicians, the highest certification available at Mazda. This section identifies the certification requirements leading to Master Technician. Additionally, this section presents Mazda’s recognition program to reward Certified Technicians, Senior Technicians, and Master Technicians for achieving and maintaining certification.
2.1 Mazda Certification Mazda certification encourages Technicians to improve their technical skills and knowledge. Certification is a combination of number of years employed by Mazda (tenure), web-based training, instructor-led training, and ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification. The Certification screen on MazdaState.com lists the certification progress, helping Technicians determine quickly what they need to become certified. Service Managers can track certification progress for all Technicians at a dealership using Report 23 - Technician Certification Tracking Report on MazdaState.com. Mazda has six Technician levels listed in Table 2 and described below.
2.2 Technical Training Requirements The Technician’s certification level is provided on the MazdaState.com Certification screen. MazdaState.com automatically promotes Technicians according to their tenure, accrued warranty hours, and upon completion of technician certification requirements. The certification level cannot be changed by dealer personnel. Technical training requirements are listed in Table 3. These requirements become effective on February 1, 2013. Since certification requirements change quarterly, Service Managers and Technicians should ensure new requirements are met to maintain certification. Refer to Section 3 for course descriptions and Section 4 for course registration. Dealers can order uniform patches for Technicians, Certified Technicians, Senior Technicians, and Master Technicians from MStore. A limited number of patches are available at Mazda Training Centers. Lube Technician (Job Code D329) The training certification requirements for Lube Technicians are currently being developed and will be posted on Mazda State later this year. Technician Other (Job Code D399) Dual dealerships may designate up to two employees as Technician Other (D399). The Technician Other can perform service on Mazda vehicles and vehicles from another automobile manufacturer. MazdaState.com will automatically promote a Technician Other to a New Hire/Trainee (D341) when

the employee has flagged 20 warranty hours within a quarter. Once a Technician Other becomes a New Hire/Trainee, MazdaState.com will not permit the technician to be reclassified as a Technician Other. A Technician Other does not have any training requirements, but may attend technical training if approved by the Technician Other’s service manager. New Hire/Trainee (Job Code D341) Employees with no previous work history at a Mazda dealership are classified as a New Hire/Trainee (D341) or a Technician (D330). When the employee has reached 6 months of employment at a Mazda dealership, the New Hire/Trainee will be automatically promoted to a Mazda Technician (D330) and will have the same certification requirements as a Certified Technician (D331), listed in Table 3. Once a New Hire/Trainee becomes a Technician, MazdaState.com will not permit the Technician to be reclassified as a New Hire/Trainee. This level also includes Technicians who were previously employed by a Mazda dealer and have completed some technical training. MazdaState.com will restore Technician levels within 15 days for former Mazda Certified, Senior, or Master Technicians, as long as the Technician meets the current requirements for the certification level. Please do not try to override the system’s automatic promotions. Technician (Job Code D330)
Dealership employees with limited Mazda Technician training are classified as Technician (D330). These Technicians have not completed the training certifications requirements listed in Table 3. As a result, dealers who have Technicians in this job code may not be eligible for the Dealer Performance Program (DPP) if the dealer does not comply with the training standards listed in Table 1. These Technicians have the same training certification requirements as Certified Technicians (D331), listed in Table 3.
Certified Technician (Job Code D331)
Technicians are automatically promoted to Certified Technicians after completing the requirements listed in Table 3. Technicians should take the ILT courses in this order: Introduction to Mazda (course 203)
Electrical 1 (course 209)
Engine Management 1 (course 210)
SKYACTIV Technology (course 1377)
Certified Technicians receive a certificate after completing the requirements. In addition, Certified Technicians become eligible to participate in the Reward Performance by Mazda (RPM) recognition program (see Section 2.6) and receive points towards an award(s) of their choice. Senior Technician (Job Code D332)
Senior Technicians must meet the training requirements listed in Table 3 and ASE requirements listed in Table 4.
New Senior Technicians receive a polo shirt, uniform patches, and a certificate upon reaching this certification level. The package is mailed to the address provided by the Senior Technician. Senior Technicians receive additional RPM points for completing ILT and WBT courses and ASE certifications. See Section 2.6 for information about the RPM recognition program.

Mazda is proud of the loyalty and dedication our Master Technicians display by meeting the training requirements in Table 3 and the ASE requirements in Table 4. New Master Technicians receive a special gift to acknowledge their success at reaching the highest Mazda Technician certification level. The package is mailed to the address provided by the Master Technician and contains uniform patches,
a framed certificate, a set of Master Technician fender covers, and a Master Technician jacket. It may take up to 6 weeks for the package to arrive reaching the Master Technician level. In addition, Master Technicians receive additional RPM points for completing new ILT and WBT courses not part of the current certification requirements. Master Technicians also receive RPM points for ASE re-certifications. See Section 2.6 for information about the RPM recognition program.
2.3 ASE Certification Requirements Mazda encourages all Technicians to obtain ASE certifications. ASE require-ments for Senior Technicians and Master Technicians are listed in Table 4. These requirements are in addition to the technical training requirements listed in Table 3. Technicians who pass the certification tests and satisfy the work experience requirement will be mailed their ASE credentials a few weeks later. ASE transfers test data to Mazda on a monthly basis. Technicians may know they passed the tests before ASE notifies Mazda. It may take up to 4 weeks for certification levels to change in MazdaState.com once the Technician meets the ASE requirements. For more information about ASE certification, including test dates and locations, refer to the www.ase.com.

Mazda offers two types of technical training courses: instructor-led training (ILT), and web-based training (WBT). This section provides a description of the courses required for certification. All ILT and WBT courses are provided at no cost to Mazda dealership Technicians; in certain situations, late cancellation and no show fees apply. See Section 4, Course Registration, for instructions on how to register for ILT courses. See Section 5.4, Cancellation Policy – Dealers, for late cancellation and No Show charges. 3.1 Prerequisites Mazda requires Technicians to complete prerequisites before attending instructor-led training. Prerequisites may include web-based training and other instructor-led training. These courses enable Technicians to acquire automotive knowledge before attending instructor-led training. When Technicians attend ILT training, more time can be devoted to hands-on training. To maximize learning during ILT courses, please review associated prerequisite WBT course(s) prior to attending each ILT course. Prerequisites for each course are listed with each course description in Section 3.2, Instructor-led Training. 3.2 Instructor-led Training Instructor-led training courses are facilitated by Technical Training Instructors with many years of experience with Mazda vehicles and automotive technology. Many of our Instructors have been previously employed by Mazda dealerships and were Master Technicians before becoming Instructors. Course prerequisites must be completed before attending ILT courses. Service Managers and Technicians can search for courses on MazdaState.com, check course availability, enroll in a course, and cancel enrollment in a course. This section explains the steps necessary to complete these actions. 4.1 How to Enter a New Mazda Technician into eMDCS Each dealership is responsible for entering their Technicians’ information in the Mazda Dealer Communication System (eMDCS). This process requires entering personal information, including Social Security Number, into the eMDCS Dealer Personnel Records. It is important that all Technician information in the eMDCS is accurate. Mazda Systems Help Center For assistance using the eMDCS, the Mazda Systems Help Center is open Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Pacific Time. Please call (800) 421-6507 for assistance or send an email to [email protected]. 4.2 How to Login to MazdaState.com To login to MazdaState.com the first time:
1. Click on Mazda State from the dealer website to automatically access Mazda State or type MazdaState.com in the web Address area.
2. If you access Mazda State using the web Address area, the site will prompt you to login. The first time you login, type your username. The username is a combination of your first name initial and your last name, up to a total of eight letters. For example, George Washington’s user name is gwashing. Use the same first name initial that you registered under as a dealership employee. Type the temporary password zoom, then press the Enter key. If your user name is found in the MazdaState.com database, you will see Mazda’s Data Privacy Statement. If the system does not recognize your name, please contact your office manager.
3. After reading the statement, you will be given a Consent or Reject option. If you click on the Consent option, you will be prompted to change your password. Selecting the Reject option exits you out of the system.
4. When you are prompted to change your password, it must be at least four characters and contain at least one number and one alpha character. You can use special characters (for example, #, *, &, and !). The password is case sensitive. If you capitalize a letter, you must capitalize it each time you enter your password.
5. After you have changed your password, you will advance to the Home page. Click on the CERTIFICATION, TRAINING ACTIVITY, PERFORMANCE CHAMPIONS, and TRAINING HISTORY tabs to access these pages.
6. At the Home page, click on the Tutorial link on the left side of the page to see a list of topics on how to use MazdaState.com.

5.5 Cancellation Policy – Mazda Technical Training Mazda Technical Training makes every effort to conduct class sessions as scheduled. At times, it may be necessary to cancel a class as late as the first day of the scheduled class due to unpredictable events or extreme weather conditions. This includes, but is not limited to, local fire(s) threatening safety, ice/snow storms, hurricanes, and earthquakes. If this occurs, Technical Training will contact the Technicians’ Service Managers and reschedule the class as soon as possible. Reimbursement to dealers will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
6.0 Training Policies
2013 Mazda Technical Training Guidelines 36
What’s New
Mazda training locations are now smoke-free facilities, including the parking lots (Section 6.6).
It is important Technicians have a positive experience while attending instructor-led training. This section outlines training policies developed by Mazda to facilitate a positive environment for Technicians attending instructor-led training. 6.1 Safety Technicians attending training must observe all safety requirements and are expected to perform training activities in a safe manner. Conduct that may lead to injury or damage to property will not be tolerated. Firearms are not permitted at any training location. 6.2 Conduct Technicians are expected to conduct themselves in a business-like manner. Profanity, confrontations with the Technical Training Instructor or other Technicians, or any behavior that disrupts training will not be allowed. This behavior will result in the participant being removed from the class and not receiving credit. Technicians must refrain from drinking alcohol or using controlled substances during training, breaks, or lunch. 6.3 Non-harassment Mazda believes in the principle of equality in the workplace. Mazda has made a commitment to zero tolerance of harassment. Harassment in any form is unacceptable conduct and will not be tolerated. Technicians are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that assures the training environment is free from all forms of verbal, non-verbal, visual, or physical harassment, including sexual harassment and discrimination. This includes, but is not limited to, harassment for race, color, national origin and ancestry, religion, age, sex, pregnancy, childbirth, sexual orientation, marital status, medical condition, disability, veteran status, and any other protected basis. Behavior that violates this policy may result in the Technician being removed from the class and not receiving credit. Copies of the non-harassment policy are available from the Technical Training Instructor. 6.4 Dress Technicians are expected to dress the same as they would at their place of employment. Hands-on activities for instructor-led training courses are conducted in a shop environment that is similar to the service bays at Mazda dealerships. For safety reasons, Technicians must wear closed toe shoes, long pants, and shirts with sleeves. Shorts are acceptable as long as they are appropriate. Technicians wearing clothing with offensive language or graphics or open toe shoes, including sandals and flip flops, will be asked to change clothing or leave the training facility. Technicians who leave the training facility because of clothing issues will not receive credit for the scheduled class. 6.5 Punctuality Technicians should arrive at the training facility in time to allow the class to start on time. Technicians who arrive late will be admitted at the Technical Training Instructor’s discretion. All courses start at 9:00 a.m., unless otherwise stated. 6.6 Smoke-free Facilities All Mazda training locations are smoke-free facilities. Smoking or use of tobacco products is not allowed inside these facilities and in the parking lots.
Training Policies
2013 Mazda Technical Training Guidelines 37
6.7 Special Needs Dealer management is requested to advise the Technical Training Instructor of any Technician scheduled for training who has special needs. Prior knowledge of these needs will allow the Technical Training Instructor to better accommodate these Technicians. 6.8 Cell (Mobile) Phone Use The use of cell (mobile) phones, including texting, is not permitted while class is in session. Technicians are encouraged to turn off their cell phones during class. 6.9 Class Size Mazda Technical Training classes are developed to maximize hands-on experience. Generally, class sizes range from 6 to 10 students. Class size may be adjusted to compensate for differences in facilities and instructional resources. The Technical Training Instructor may cancel or reschedule a class if enrollment is low. 6.10 Class Scheduling Training classes are scheduled 60 days in advance throughout the year. Technical Training Instructors email their training schedules to DSMs every Monday. You can check the current technical training schedule using one of the following methods: login to MazdaState.com, contact your DSM or Technical Training Instructor.
