Meet the OSBA Summer Conference Speakers

Dawn Arheit– [email protected] Wife and personal assistant to a beekeeper for over 13 years, mother of 3 beautiful children, owner of Busy B Realty of Lima Ohio, and Superintendent of Allen County Ohio Fairgrounds for Bees & Honey for 8 years. Tim Arheit—[email protected] Tim had been a beekeeper for over 13 years and rais-es NWC Queens commercially at his small operation of 150 hives in Northwest Ohio. He is Vice-President of the Northwest Ohio Beekeepers Association and Vice President of OSBA. Nina Bagley—[email protected] Nina Bagley is the beekeeper for Franklin Park Apiary. She has been working with bees and with a Master Beekeeper for the past 9 years. She started raising queens 4 years ago and is now raising her own queens, and shipping them nationally. She has com-pleted queen classes and instrumental insemination classes given by Dr. Joe Latshaw. She has given talks regionally for beekeeping clubs and is known for bee talks to garden clubs throughout Columbus Ohio. The Twigs Garden Club made a $10,000 honorarium do-nation to Children’s Hospital in Nina’s name for giving bee talks. She teaches beekeeping classes and men-tors beekeepers. Carmen Conrad—[email protected] Carmen was the OSBA Beekeeper of the Year 2007, and COBA Beekeeper of the Year 2011. She is the winner of blue ribbons at State and National levels. She is a Certified Honey Judge, and she has been in the bee-keeping business for 25 years. Denise Ellsworth—[email protected] Denise directs the honey bee and native pollinator ed-ucation program through the OSU Department of En-tomology on the OARDC campus in Wooster. In this outreach position, Denise supports and teaches bee-keepers, farmers, and gardeners through a variety of workshops, written materials and electronic resources Kimberly Flippen— [email protected] Kim is a member of OSBA, ECOBA, COBA and Order of the Queen, and has been the Apiary Inspector for 4 years in Fairfield County. She is co-owner of Honey Valley Apiaries, where she raises Ohio bred queens and sells local honey with apiaries in Franklin and Fairfield County. She is currently the OSBA Heart of

Ohio Region Rep. She gives talks on the inspection process for local clubs and organizations as well as instruction on beginning beekeeping. Past co-coach of COBA ‘s Fun in the Beeyard. Kim Flottum—[email protected] Editor of Bee Culture nearly 30 years, author of 4 books on several different beekeeping and beekeep-ing related topics, Past OSBA President, and VP, For-mer Chairman of the Board, EAS John Grafton—[email protected] John retired from the Ohio Department of Agriculture in 2008 after spending 32 years with the apiary in-spection program. He started keeping bees in 1964 with a 4-H project and has had bees ever since. Two awards he has received are the OSBA Ohio Beekeep-er of the Year Award, and the Exceptional Service Award presented by the Apiary Inspectors of America. John has held various offices in OSBA and is a past President of OSBA. He recently worked with Jim Tew to develop a series of videos for the beginning bee-keeper. These videos are available to view on the OSBA web site. John and his wife Katie reside near Bloomingdale, OH in Jefferson County with their chil-dren Amanda and Clinton nearby. Greg Hunt—[email protected] Greg Hunt is a professor at Purdue University and is working with beekeepers in Indiana to breed better strains of bees. He graduated from John Carroll Uni-versity and he earned a MS degree in Plant Patholo-gy from Penn State in 1984. He then worked as a lab tech at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where he became a hobby beekeeper. His interest in bees led him to enroll in the graduate program at the University of California-Davis where he received a PhD in Ento-mology. He has published over 60 scientific papers on bees, including the first genetic map of the honey bee genome. He has served as Chairman of the Heartland Apiculture Society, Trustee for the Founda-tion for the Preservation of Honey Bees, and President of the American Association of Professional Apicultur-ists. His research focuses on honey bee genetics and bee health. Joe Kovaleski—[email protected] Joe has been keeping bees for 19 years and is an EAS Master Beekeeper, West Virginia Master Bee-keeper, Ohio Master Beekeeper, EAS director for Ohio, and 2008 Ohio State Beekeeper of the Year.

Along with his wife Suzan, he produces beeswax candles and honey for sale at fairs and festivals, and they have won many Best of Show and Blue Ribbons in honey and molded wax contests, to include the 2012 EAS Bee Culture Magazine Award for Beeswax, and the 2012 West Virginia State Beekeepers Best of Show Awards for Comb Honey, Extracted Honey, and Beeswax. Joe is Crossroads Region Director for OSBA. He is a member of the new Buckeye Queen Producers group in Ohio, and a member of the West Virginia Queen Producers Assoc., raising queens in the northern panhandle. Doug Sponsler—[email protected] Doug has an undergraduate degree in Biology from Cedarville University and is currently working on a gradu-ate degree in Entomology at OSU. Working with his advisor, Dr. Reed Johnson, he is studying the relation-ship between honey bees and their surrounding landscape, with a particular focus on how bees respond to urban and agricultural environments. He is grateful for the support from local beekeepers that he has re-ceived, and he looks forward to the continuing partnership. Dwight Wilson—[email protected] Dwight has been keeping bees for 40 years. He is President of the North West Ohio Beekeeper Association. He enjoys working with bees and people who want to get into beekeeping. Tom Winland—[email protected] Tom is a 2nd generation beekeeper and an East Central Ohio Beekeepers Association Muskingum County Trustee and mentor. He has been keeping honey bees for about 5 years and cutting hives out of trees and houses for the past 4 years. Along the way passing this knowledge off to the next generation of beekeepers.
