Shady Lane Vineyard & Winery

Jim and Nancy are the owners and operators of Shady Lane Vineyard & Winery, Inc. Both Jim and Nancy were born and raised in the Upper Midwest. They met while attending the major university in their state, where Jim graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanized Agriculture. Nancy graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

Jim and Nancy fell in love with wine industry while living in California in 1985. A California owner of a vineyard and winery was willing to spend a lot of time with them and shared valuable information regarding the joys and difficulties of owning and operating a vineyard and winery. One of the most important pieces of information he shared was “to decide what you like to do and do it.” He cautioned that it is not possible to do all of the work yourself. He said, “This business can consume your life, so be careful!”

They took his words of wisdom seriously and proceeded to build their business over the course of the last twelve years. They applied for the Farm Winery License in 1999 after moving back to their home state. To be licensed as a Farm Winery, one must obtain both a federal and state License. They were successful in securing 80 acres of land in Prairieland County. Their land is located just off of a major US highway, nine miles west of a major interstate highway and 7 miles west of the major city in the region, Prairieland. The location of their business, on a route taken by many tourists traveling through the state, has contributed to their success.

Their two boys, Reed and Ross, were involved in helping them build both their home and business. They witnessed firsthand the work in starting a vineyard, including planting 700 grape vines, 1,000 fruit trees, and designing a winery tasting room. Currently, the vineyard consists of approximately two acres of grapes with about 1,200 grape vines.

After purchasing their land, building their home, and securing their licenses, Jim and Nancy officially opened their winery in November of 2000. They made a decision to utilize the area that was originally designed to be a recreation room and garage as the Tasting Room and Production Area. Twelve years later they are still using that same space as the primary tasting room and gift store. They also are still using the production area to fill wholesale wine orders and shipping orders. Utilizing this space has enabled them to keep their wines competitively priced.

Because the tasting room is a part of their home and the production area is built next to their home, these facilities are not included as part of the business property. The reason for this is that, should the business close at any time, the home and production building are still personal property.

The first level of expansion was to build an additional production building. They built the first building in 2004. It served as a wine-making and a bulk wine storage facility. In 2009, they built an additional building to accommodate the growth of their business. The second building can store up to 25,000 gallons of wine, has a walk-in freezer and a commercial scale for weighing fruit purchased during harvest season. This building also provides them with additional space during the harvest season to process fruit and to make the wine. Their business has grown from selling 600 gallons of wine in 2000 to selling over 12,000 gallons in 2012. They have focused on making their wines from fruits that grow in the Upper Midwest. Their tag line, “Experience extraordinary tastes from an unexpected place,” clearly communicates the branding of their business philosophy. They choose to focus on making distinctive Prairieland region wines.

Currently, they are producing twenty different grape and fruit wines and also make a port style wine. They market their wines at their home tasting room, at a store in the National Monument location and in 150 wholesale businesses across the state. They are licensed to sell their wine only in their home state at this time.

Their priorities are to grow their own business and to grow the wine industry in their state. Both Jim and Nancy were involved in their state’s Wine Growers Association, and they assisted in writing grants to further the cause of growing the wine industry in the Upper Midwest. Jim has been very involved in passing legislation that has helped to increase wine sales for their business. Their state has outdated laws relating back to the days of Prohibition, suggesting there is much work remaining in the area of legislative reform.

There are many facets to owning and operating a vineyard and winery. Jim and Nancy have divided up the responsibilities for managing the business as follows:

Jim is primarily responsible for determining which grapes to grow and purchase. He has developed an excellent working relationship with the fifteen growers who raise fruit produced for their wine production. He also has developed a means of assisting the growers in testing their soil, spraying their vineyards, and determining criteria for harvesting their fruit. He is the primary winemaker.

Nancy has assumed responsibility for managing sales, developing markets and supervising the tasting room staff at both store sites. By coordinating sales and delivery schedules, she has developed a strong working relationship with 150 wholesale accounts.

Collectively, they have worked to develop the specialty label aspect of their business. Currently they have secured specialty labels for nine of the major tourist attractions in their state, including art centers, nationally known annual celebrations, restaurants, and shopping establishments. In addition, they can create a specialized label from a digital picture provided by the purchaser. An example would be a specialized label made for a wedding with a picture of the bride and groom.

Both Jim and Nancy worked fulltime in the early stages of their business. However, seven years ago Nancy retired from working in the field of human services, specifically working with individuals with disabilities in various positions for over twenty-five years. Jim is still employed on a part-time basis with a church organization. Early on in the development of their business, Jim worked full-time.

Presently there are about 20 licensed farm wineries in the state. Shady Lane Vineyard and Winery is second in terms of wine production and sales. As they look to the future, one of their concerns is expansion efforts and passing on their business to their oldest son, Reed, and his wife, Laura. Laura is currently working with them on a part-time basis, as their chief financial officer. In addition, she assists with wine making and hosting special events. Reed is working full time in his profession. They are very interested in being more involved in the business, perhaps taking the business over at a later date.

Questions for consideration with regard to potential expansion efforts include the following:

What do we need to ask about the processing time/production cycle from the time of planting, harvesting to income (cash flow perspective)?

Should additional property be purchased to expand the grape and fruit production?

Fixed assets - $370,000 are not listed on the balance sheets, which are personal. Use of personal assets for business interests.

Risks - are there any pest issues that might put the operation at risk? (Chemical sensitivity of grape vines is a factor.)

Should going organic be considered? Why or why not?

Where is the greatest opportunity to increase sales?

Is it time to build a separate tasting room at the home site?

Should their market be expanded to include weddings or meetings at the vineyard and host more events at the home location?

How can they increase sales in the National Monument location tasting room and achieve a higher level of efficiency? It has been difficult to manage a sales site that is a considerable distance away from the home site. It has also been difficult to determine the feasibility of staying open year-around in a market that is driven by tourist traffic. They are struggling with maintaining full-time staff or simply employing part-time staff for that site.

Another key question that needs to be answered is, what is the best succession plan for the next generation?

For Jim and Nancy, making wine, selling wine, and helping grow a new industry has been extremely rewarding. It has also been a lot of hard work. Jim and Nancy are approaching retirement age and have some decisions to make. Their youngest son, Ross, and his wife, Amy, do not want to participate in the business nor do they want in any way to share ownership. However, as stated earlier, their oldest son and his wife have a great deal of interest in being involved in the business to a greater degree.

Jim and Nancy are at a crossroads with their business. Is it time to slow down and enjoy their accomplishments or take on additional expansion challenges and continue to grow their business? Passion, energy, and commitment to making excellent Upper Midwest wines is paramount with them and continues to motivate the commitment to their business. How to best move forward at this time in their business and their lives is the challenging question they are currently asking.

*COGS is the costs that go into creating the products that a company sells; therefore, the only costs included

in the measure are those that are directly tied to the production of the products.

The Cost of Goods Sold are costs to the business but are separated from traditional operating expenses

because they are considered to be used in creation or production of the product to be sold.

They are ongoing costs that are subtracted from Total Revenue to yield a Gross Profit to the business.

Traditional operating expenses are then subtracted from the Gross Profit.
