2013 MEN’S LACROSSE - 3
HEAD COACH KYLE HART
Kyle Hart will enter his second season as Augustana’s head lacrosse coach in the 2012-13 school year, after leading the Vikings to an 8-6 record in the schools inaugural season of varsity la-crosse. In Hart’s first year on the job, defense became the Vikings calling card, ranking in the top five in the country for scoring defense most of the year.
In 14 games during the 2012 season, the Vikings gave up just 72 goals for an average of 5.14 per game, good for third in the nation. They pitched two shutouts and held eight opponents to five goals or less over the course of the season. As a team the Vikings ranked 35th in scoring margin. Augustana averaged 8.79 goals per game and gave up 5.14 for a scoring margin of 3.64.
Hart spent three seasons as the assistant coach at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylva-nia before being assuming the position at Augustana in the summer of 2010 to lead the start-up
program.
Hart, who graduated from Muhlenberg in May of 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international studies with con-centrations in global trade and international business. He was twice selected to the all-conference team in the Centennial Conference and was Muhlenberg’s first ever all-conference selection. He was twice elected team captain and he came to Muhlenberg after a successful high school career at Massapequa High School on Long Island where he was a two time all-county selection.
He assumed the assistant coaching position at Muhlenberg after graduation and he worked in a variety of aspects for that job. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and worked as game manager and athletic facility monitor.

2013 MEN’S LACROSSE PROSPECTUS
After successful first campaign, Vikings anxious for second season
By any definition the 2012 men’s lacrosse season at Au-gustana was a success. Head coach Kyle Hart’s team had a very productive inaugural campaign as the Vikings put together an 8-6 overall record and christened a brand-new venue in Thorson-Lucken Field.
“The first season was a success and we want to build upon that this year,” said Hart. “I am excited about 2013. We learned some things as a team last year and one thing we can stress right now is the importance of the off-season. This is a year-round program and we have to be ready for the competitive schedule we play.”
Not only did the Vikings put together a winning season but they also showed up in the NCAA Division III national statistical ranking in three individual and one team cat-egory. Goalkeeper Cody Burgdorff (Peak-to-Peak HS, Lafayette, Colo.) finished the year ranked eighth in goals-against-average at 6.27 and his save percentage of .611 was 17th. Leading scorer Jesse Nagelberg (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) finished 23rd in goals-per-game with a mark of 2.79. As a team, Augustana was third in scoring defense while allowing just 5.14 goals-per-game.
“One of our team goals last year was to be the best first-year program in the region and I think we accomplished that,” said Hart. “This year we have a new challenge as we move into a conference for the first time. Our goal will be to win the league but the competition will be stiff.”
The Vikings will join the Midwest Lacrosse Conference in 2013 and will join Carthage, Aurora, Benedictine, Elmhurst, Mt. St. Joseph, Defiance, Hanover, Fontbonne, Concordia-Wisconsin and Milwaukee School of Engineering. Last year Hart’s club played six of those teams with wins over Ha-nover, Fontbonne and Milwaukee School of Engineering and losses to Carthage, Aurora and Concordia-Wisconsin.
Only one starter was lost a year ago so Hart has plenty of experience returning heading into 2013. At the attack posi-tion sophomores Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.), Nagelberg and Brad Anderson (Arrowhead HS, Hartland, Wis.) are the returning starters. Haley had 13 goals and four assists last year while Nagelberg led the team with 39 goals and five assists for 44 points and Anderson chipped in with four goals and three assists for seven points.
This year Nagelberg and Anderson might be shifted to the midfield and Haley could be joined by freshmen Kevin Glea-son (Loyola Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and Scott Davis (St. Thomas Aquinas HS, Overland Park, Kansas). Sophomore John Pagliarello (Heritage HS, Littleton, Colo.) and freshman Andrew Miller (Waukesha North HS, Waukesha, Wis.) will be in the mix as well. Two others who contribute on the attack are face-off specialists J.G. Saunders (The Calverton School, Aquasco, Md.) and Ryan Nakamoto (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) – both sophomores.
The midfield area has sophomores Tim Fennelly (Littleton HS, Centennial, Colo.), Doug Barrie (Lake Forest HS, Lake Forest, Ill.) and Vincent Giglierano (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) returning on offense and ju-nior Keegan Horack (Illinois Valley HS, Chillicothe, Ill.) and sophomores Jeremy Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algon-quin, Ill.) and Ryan Nakamoto (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) back on defense.
This year Nagelberg could switch to midfield and he will be joined by freshman Alex Crescenti (Jacobs HS, Algon-quin, Ill.), Fennelly, Barrie, Giglierano, Anderson, sopho-more Evan Chikeles (Hoffman Estates HS, Hoffman Es-tates, Ill.) and freshman Austin Marrison (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.). Fennelly was the second leading scorer for the Vikings in 2012 and he scored 18 goals with four assists while Barrie had 14 goals and three assists. The defensive midfield could consist of sophomore Ty Benson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.), freshman Daniel Ful-ton (Denver East HS, Denver, Colo.), Horack, freshman Jonathan Bryk (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and Saunders. Saunders had 10 goals and four assists a year ago.
Two starters, junior Zach McGinnis (New Trier HS, Ke-nilworth, Ill.) and sophomore Brian Donohoue (Littleton HS, Centennial, Colo.) are back on defense. Joining McGinnis and Donohoue will be Gottardo, sophomore Jake Self (Marina HS, Huntington Beach, Calif.), sophomore Andrew Jurewicz (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) and freshman Ryan Sullivan (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.).
Burgdorff had a nice season in goal as a freshman as he recorded 110 saves and posted a 6-6-0 record. Freshman Jack Peters (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) will be in the mix as well.

2012 MEN’S LACROSSE SEASON REVIEW
Coach Kyle Hart’s Vikings complete first season of intercollegiate play with an 8-6 record
The first season of varsity men’s lacrosse at Augustana turned out to be a rousing success. Coach Kyle Hart, fielding a roster consist-ing of 26 freshmen, four sophomores and just one junior and se-nior, guided the 2012 Vikings to an 8-6 record. The team won the first game in the program’s history, 17-3 over Millsaps in Jackson, Mississippi, as well as its first-ever home contest, a 6-3 victory over Fontbonne at Thorson-Lucken Field. Augustana finished the season ranked third in all of Division III with an average of just 5.14 goals allowed per game.
On February 22, freshman Jesse Nagelberg (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) scored six goals and classmate Vincent Giglierano (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Cal.) added three goals—including the first in program history—and three assists in Augustana’s inaugural contest at Millsaps. The Vikings also record-ed decisive wins over Huntingdon and Rhodes before dropping the finale of their season-opening southern swing 5-4 at Hendrix.
Augustana brought a 3-1 record into its March 9 home opener against Fontbonne. Freshman Brad Anderson (Arrowhead HS, Hartland, Wis.) scored the first lacrosse goal ever at Thorson-Lucken Field and the Vikings went on to a 6-3 win over the Grif-fins. Two days later, the team moved to 5-1 with a 15-0 win over Alma as freshman goalkeepers Cody Burgdorff (Peak to Peak HS, Lafayette, Colo.) and Jon Pape (Hoffman Estates HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) split the shutout.
The Vikings fell 7-6 in overtime at Albion and 14-6 at Trine despite a season-high 14 saves from Burgdorff before bouncing back with a 15-0 home whitewash of Milwaukee School of Engineering. Pape went the distance in goal to get the shutout.
In the season’s final five games, Augustana recorded wins over Hanover in Indianapolis, Indiana and at Alma and dropped home contests to established programs Aurora and Carthage as well as a road date at Concordia in Mequon, Wisconsin.
Nagelberg and senior Marcus Maier (Loyola Academy, Wil-mette, Ill.) were named Augustana’s offensive and defensive Most Valuable Players. Nagelberg led the Vikings with 39 goals and tied for the team lead with five assists. His average of 2.79 goals per game ranked 23rd in the nation at the Division III level. Maier, a co-captain and the team’s lone senior, was credited with 15 caused turnovers and eight ground balls on the year.
Junior Zach McGinnis (New Trier HS, Kenilworth, Ill.), the Vikings’ other co-captain, was another key defensively. He started every game and led the team with 21 caused turnovers and Augustana defenders with 31 ground balls. Freshmen Brian Donohoue (Centennial HS, Littleton, Colo.), with 19 caused turnovers and 20 ground balls, and Ty Benson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.), with 16 of each, also helped anchor the defense.
Burgdorff finished his freshman year with a 7-6 record. His goals against average of 6.27 was eighth in the nation and his .611 save percentage ranked 17th. Pape picked up the Vikings’ other win and allowed just two goals while making 11 saves in 168 minutes this season—good for a save percentage of .846 and a GAA of 0.71.
Giglierano scored eight goals and tied Nagelberg for the team lead with five assists. Freshman Tim Fennelly (Centennial HS, Littleton, Colo.) led the team with 60 ground balls and ranked second in goals (18) and faceoffs won (31) and third in as-sists (tied with four). Freshman J.G. Saunders (The Calverton School, Aquasco, Md.) had 10 goals and four assists. He led Augustana in faceoffs, winning 47 of 92 (.511) and was second with 45 ground balls. Freshmen Doug Barrie (Lake Forest HS, Lake Forest, Ill.) and Colin Haley (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) tied for third on the team in total points with 17. Barrie’s came on 14 goals and three assists, while Haley had 13 goals and four assists.

THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSINNow in its 67th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois.
Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961. In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Carthage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955.
As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW mem-bership has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left fol-lowing the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. El-mhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew.
Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tra-dition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the first time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the first ever women’s competition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Central in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College.
The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sanctions 21 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball and wrestling.
Augustana also sports varsity men’s and women’s lacrosse teams. Neither women’s nor men’s lacrosse is currently a CCIW sport.
Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 176 total. Of those 176, the men have won 137 and 39 belong to the women.
Men’s lacrosse became an official varsity sport at Augusta-na during the 2011-12 school year. In their inaugural sea-son, the Vikings were third in NCAA Division III in scoring defense allowing 5.14 goals per game.
During the 2013 season, Augustana will compete in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference. In addition to the Vikings, current members of the MWC include Aurora, Benedictine, Carthage, Concordia (Wis.), Defiance, Elmhurst, Fontbonne, Hanover, Mount St. Joseph, and Milwaukee School of Engi-neering.
