A Note from the Director of Charley’s Aunt What makes Charley's Aunt such an enduring comedic classic is its mix of forms. It is a comedy of manners in the tradition of The Importance of Being Earnest blended with a good old fashioned farce of mistaken identities. The result is a cross-dressing chestnut that demands much from its actors in terms of their cleanliness in performance. This, in combination with the limited SCT rehearsal period, has provided a great challenge for all involved. The joy of SCT is watching the company shuttle from Charley's Aunt to rehearsals for the children's show, the musical, or the absurdist play. While our audiences are exposed to plays of varying styles, the company also gets a practical education in them. In the coming productions watch how all involved must adjust to the demands of these various scripts. But for tonight, enjoy!

The Turn of the Screw By Jeffrey Hatcher

Directed by Kirill Sheynerman

A Note from the Director of The Turn of the Screw Every culture has ghost stories. As we enter adulthood, we are taught to disregard them. And

yet, they are told repeatedly with each generation reinventing the form. Adapted from the

novella of the same name, The Turn of the Screw speaks to our fears and imagination. Hav-

ing turned the novella into a two-person play this adaptation explores what is real, what is

imagined, and what we fear in life. This play allows the audience to decide for themselves

who, if anyone, is telling the truth, and what happens when we are left to struggle with what

we fear most. The story takes place in an isolated English estate leaving both the Governess

and the audience has to decide whom to trust and what is really happening around them.

A Note from the Director of Little Brother: Little Sister I like this play. To me, this play is about the risk and responsibility inherent in growing up.

It was written by David Campton, a playwright whose work fits into the genre of theatre

called Absurd. Absurdist Theatre stems from the belief that life is meaningless, that we are

stuck in a situation from which we cannot extricate ourselves, and that our actions have no

purpose. Yet (absurdly) we still go on. No doubt, there is a survival instinct inside human

beings that is capable of keeping us alive despite the most hopeless situations. In this play you

will meet three characters who must go on. But what happens when that survival is

threatened? What happens when nurture can no longer suppress nature? What happens when

we realize we've grown up? With Campton's play these are the questions we ask. Thank you

for coming, we hope you enjoy the show.

-Andrew Head

Due to its disturbing nature, The Turn of the Screw in rep with Little Brother: Little Sister is recommended for audiences age 13 and up.

A Note from the Director of Baby Our campus is practically a city of its own, buzzing with activity. Whether we're here to

study, teach, work, visit a museum or go to a game, we find our lives intersecting in many

ways. That's certainly true of the characters in Baby, which is why I chose to set the show

specifically at MSU rather than just any generic college town. Each of the three couples in

Baby are at different stages in their lives, but they find that the common experience of

pregnancy bonds them. They're able to bridge generational divisions and connect. And in

doing so, they're transformed from individuals who happen to be in the same place to a true

community. Tonight, as we sit together on the banks of the Red Cedar and share in the

communal experience of theatre, we have the same opportunity to connect and share. Look at

your neighbors sitting to the right and left of you. Say hi. Share the popcorn you brought.

Enjoy the sensation of kinship.

A Note from the Director of Stop Copying Me! Although I have always been a writer, I haven’t written much for children. So it occurred to me that when writing for children, I should investigate what children think is funny. About 6 months ago I decided to embark on a brainstorming session with my eight year old son and five year old daughter. After twenty minutes of questioning them, my paper was smattered with many ideas including everything from sudden changes in weather to a superhero who gets in a fight with himself, an invisible vampire, and a talking banana. Over my 25 years working in theatre, I have seen a lot of plays for children that are too heavy handed, too long, or too rooted in fairy tales or princess troubles. My aim in writing STOP COPYING ME! was to create a zany, crazy & fun piece that kids could relate to and enjoy. Needless to say, the talking banana made it into the show. In rehearsals I have stressed fast, furious, fun, & physical approach, and my amazingly talented an imaginative cast have not disap-pointed. I hope you enjoy the show, and I’m certain my children will let me know if they don’t!

- Dionne O’Dell

Special Thanks to Toby and Miranda Bourne- without their countless ideas and inspiration, there would be no Banana...
