Dear Colleagues! We would like to invite you to the LIDC Congress 2013, which is to be held in Kiev for the !rst time, on September 19-22!

This year, the Association for Resistance to Unfair Competition, which is the Ukrainian national group of LIDC, has the honour of organizing and hosting this major event for all those who have an interest in competition law and IP rights. Moreover, we are especially pleased to hold the Congress in Kiev, as it will be the !rst LIDC Congress in Ukraine or any other CIS-country.

We did our best to make this Congress interesting with regards to both its content and the entertainment on o"er.

We have prepared a program on such current topics as the antitrust regulation of the food products retail, the non-compliance with CSR policies as unfair business practice, FRAND standards, the trademark and market issues in relation to the new gTLDs and antitrust damages claims. These issues will be presented by highly reputable speakers and “up to date” panel discussions.

Furthermore, of course, we invite you to Kiev to learn about the rich Ukrainian culture, to discover this ancient city in Eastern Europe, to visit landmarks of cultural heritage and to experience Slavonic hospitality.

We are absolutely positive that LIDC Congress 2013 will be a very valuable experience for you!

See you in Kiev!

Yours sincerely,

KIEVGeographically, Kiev sits at the centre of Europe, just couple hours #ight time from major West European cities. In reality it feels like an entirely di"erent world. Cold Imposing soviet statues from a bygone era and beautiful Golden domed churches are just a few of the delights that await you. But Ukraine is changing; a newly independent country has emerged from its soviet legacy, and is now establishing itself with its own unique identity.

Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, is one of the most beautiful cities in the East of Europe. It is a city of everything you least expect. The so called “Mother of all Slavic cities”, steeped in history and rich in culture. Kiev is an ancient city where old meets new and east meets west. Kiev is also known as one of the greenest cities in Europe.

Ukrainians are very proud of their capital’s role in establishing European civilisation in Eastern Europe.

A little bit of Kiev history

The city’s name is said to derive from the name of Kyi, one of its four legendary founders. During its history, Kiev, one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, passed through several stages of great prominence and relative obscurity. The city probably existed as a commercial centre as early as the 5th century. A Slavic settlement on the great trade route between Scandinavia and Constantinople. Under Varangians rule, the city became a capital of the Rus’, the !rst East Slavic state. Completely destroyed during the Mongol invasion in 1240, the city lost most of its in#uence for the centuries to come. It was a provincial capital of marginal importance in the outskirts of the territories controlled by its powerful neighbours; !rst the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, followed by Poland and Russia.

The city prospered again during the Russian Empire’s industrial revolution in the late 19th century. In 1917, after the Ukrainian National Republic declared independence from the Russian Empire, Kiev became its capital. And from 1921 onwards Kiev was an important city of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and, from 1934, its capital. During World War II, the city again su"ered signi!cant damage, but quickly recovered in the post-war years, remaining the third largest city of the Soviet Union. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Ukrainian independence of 1991, Kiev remained the capital of Ukraine.
