Leadership Fox Cities 2012-2013 Steering Committee

“This year’s steering committee was committed to providing each of you with a unique and lasting experience designed to motivate and inspire more hands on involvement in the community. One of the best definitions of leadership that i’ve heard is, “leadership is the abil-ity to take people to places they have never been before and push them out of their comfort zones.” We all have a fear of the unknown, but a true leader is willing to take a risk and try something new, knowing there’s a chance of failure, but also a chance for success. As you think back on your leadership Fox Cities journey over the last nine months, find one or two things you feel passionate about, or even a bit uncomfortable with and roll up your sleeves, get involved, and really make a difference! Good luck and continued success in all that you do.”

Projects Living Leadership: Building StrongLeaders for Life

Team Members: Katelyn Bogenschneider, Tonya Dedering, lori Harris, Brian Kaufman, Dan Poeschel and Megan Pruno Objective: living leadership is a student leadership men-toring program partnered with the TRiO program, a pre-col-lege grant funded program, to mentor low-income and first generation college students in both Menasha and Kaukauna high schools. The living leadership mentorship pro-gram provides five workshops for the students selected into the program consisting of career exploration, professional-ism, resumes, interviews, and a business etiquette dinner.

Outcome/Impact: The goal of our program is to help these students gain confidence in their own skills and abilities, have increased motivation to do well in school and continue on to col-lege, learn more about various career paths, develop their own career goals, and develop a level of professionalism and under-stand what it means to be a professional. We also intend to award two scholarships, one each to a Menasha and Kaukauna student.

Kickin for a Cause

Team Members: Stephanie Crowe, Molly Deugaw, Roger Ebert, Chris Heller, Jodi Matthies and Dan Voss

Objective: The Miracle league of the Fox Valley, a program of Goodwill NCW, is an organized baseball league for children ages 4-19 with intellectual and/or physical disabilities. We focused on raising awareness about the Miracle league of the Fox Valley and procuring volunteers for the summer baseball program at three high schools. in addition, we are holding a fundraiser for the Miracle league of the Fox Valley through a kickball tournament on May 4, 2013. Outcome/Impact: Our goal with the fundraiser is to raise $2,500 for a swingset. We went to 3 high schools to solicit volunteers for the Miracle league summer baseball program and to raise awareness about the organization.

Houses for Hounds

Team Members: Joe Audette, Erin Chudacoff, Jean DeKeyser, Tania Kilpatrick, Kathy Rech-ner, Brenton Teeling and Bob Woodford Objective: Actively engage area youth in STEM-related curriculum, expose students to exciting career possibilities and provide for extended learning opportunities during the summer (FAB lab camp).

Outcome/Impact: Through the Houses for Hounds partnership project, students engaged in hands-on learning and design experience at Fox Valley Technical College’s FAB lab while helping local pets in need of overflow housing. The objectives of the project were to engage students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs in order to unlock creativity and problem solving skills. The program is designed with replication in mind for future years.

Riverview Gardens - Earn a Bike Program Team Members: Tamara Bates, Todd Healy, Nathan Kas-tein, Chris lashock, Nancy Salzwedel and Donna Vandyke

Objective: The Fox Cities October, 2012 liFE study identified trans-portation as a growing barrier for those individuals in poverty. The Earn a Bike program is a new intiative at Riverview gardens which al-lows low income individuals to be awarded a bicycle for employment related transportation needs. Our objectives are to raise community awareness, and funding for the kick off of the Earn a Bike program.

Outcome/Impact: The Earn a Bike program will help the communi-ty work towards solving the identified transportation concerns while providing an opportunity for those struggling in poverty to become engaged in the community in an effort to break the cycle of poverty.

Menasha Clothes Closet – Jay’s Nest

Team Members: Nicole Gerend, Brian Kopetsky, Scott Mc-Farlane, Patricia Milka, Mike Morse and Amy Schindler

Objective: Mentor the Menasha High School students in designing, constructing, kicking off, and sustaining their Clothes Closet. As-sist Menasha High School in establishing the scope of the Clothes Closet to meet the needs of their students and help the students be-come “involved” versus just “belonging.” Promote the Clothes Closet concept to other schools in the area and assist as needed.

Outcome/Impact: The Jay’s Nest is a nonprofit organization at Me-nasha High School that is student driven and mainly dependent on do-nations. The Nest is located in a secured and confidential area. The or-ganization provides students with basic needs such as clothing, school supplies, and personal hygiene items. The mission of the Jay’s Nest is: “Our ultimate mission is to reach financially unstable students at our community feeder schools starting right here at Menasha High School. With providing the basic needs for these students they can maintain good health and keep their main focus on their education.”

Welcome Center at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in the Fox Valley

Team Members: Mark Albers, Patricia Alger, Stephanie Gonzalez, David lindenstruth, Casee Meach and Greg Woller

Objective: Our group is working to enhance the utilization of the entry way at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in the Fox Valley (CHWFV). We gathered data and incorporated input from multiple groups of people who use that space, including CHWFV’s landlord, Theda Clark Medical Center. After study-ing our findings and testing out some of our ideas, we present-ed a final recommendation to the CHWFV leadership team.

Outcome/Impact: Creating an inviting, informational, and helpful Welcome Center at CHWFV will improve the overall experience for patients, visitors, and staff. An effective Wel-come Center will make a positive first impression on patients and visitors, as well as provide them with the information and direction they need. By centralizing that information in one location, we can cut down on general “way-finding” questions that the staff currently sets aside their normal responsibilities to answer throughout the day.

Reach Out and Read

Team Members: Brad Hall, Sharon Hanuszczak-Froberg, Bri-ana Rygg, John Swartz, Chrissi Watry and Matt Zimmerman

Objective: Working with St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Founda-tion, we are in the process of raising $15000 to begin a pi-lot Reach Out and Read program at the St. Elizabeth’s Hos-pital Children’s Clinic. After raising funds for the pilot, we hope to build awareness of the Reach Out and Read pro-gram and the benefits of reading to children at a young age. Outcome/Impact: Reach Out and Read is a program devel-oped to make literacy promotion part of pediatric checkups so that children enter school prepared to learn how to read. As part of the program, children are given books at each well-child visit. Pediatricians discuss the benefits of reading to a child. Children who enter school prepared to learn to read will be more likely to read at grade level by the end of third grade.

The new class of leaders identifies the topics or issues in which they are experienced or interested in. This supports the belief that individuals with passion and commitment to a cause or need will provide dedicated service, in order to assist local non-profits and other community-serving organizations. This listing is a com-munity resource.

last spring i learned that i would be the new Director of the leadership Fox Cities programs. Being a past graduate of the traditional program, i couldn’t have been more excited and thrilled. i have such a passion for helping to connect peo-ple to interests, new opportunities and to each other. The people that i get a chance to work with and get to know are real-ly quite remarkable to me. The diversity of talent and experiences that everyone brings to the table enrich the program so much. This enrichment comes from the committee members who give their input and help plan individual days, to the presenters who share their passion and finally to the class participants. i am so blessed to share this opportunity! As an alumni, i know first hand how important the alumni are to the future success of this program. My interest in the program came from conversations i had with community members who were past graduates. As the Director, i’m always happy to share informa-tion about the program, but my passion for the program comes from being a past participant. This program is sold and resold by its graduates. The stories and experiences they share prove to be the best and most effective tool we have when it comes to recruit-ing. Many serve on our lFC planning committees, as they interpret, develop and design programming for future lFC sessions.

i am sincerely grateful to all of the lFC committee members for their continued dedication, com-mitment and support. i am so blessed and happy to be able to consider these people my friends. Congratulations to the class of 2013! You’ve made it through this unique community driven leadership program. My hope for all of you is that you’ve become more aware of our great com-munity and some of its accolades, as well as some of its challenges. As a result, may you find things that move you to get more involved. i look forward to meeting up with you in the future.
