Every October Albuquerque skies fill with unique colors and shapes as 500+ balloons float over the city’s fascinating high desert landscape. Pilots from around the world thrive in Albuquerque's unique fall weather and take advantage of the “Albuquerque box” – a combination of upper and lower level winds created by the Rio Grande Valley and enhanced by the Sandia Mountains. The box enables balloonists to sometimes backtrack their flight path and land close to their launch site.

Evening events delight as spectators gather around inflated balloons on the field for choreographed Balloon Glows to walk amongst gigantic character balloons of all shapes and sizes. Fireworks and tasty fair foods make

for a perfect family outing. Event tickets start at just $8 per event.

The Balloon Fiesta not only provides a treat for your eyes but also encourages visitors to experience the local cuisine, art, and culture of the Southwest. In addition to the Fiesta, events will be taking place throughout the city after ballooning events are over to allow visitors to experience more of the Central New Mexico region including a brew fest, chocolate festival, museum exhibits, harvest festivals and much more.

Scheduled Events:

On-field and Off-field Competition: Mass Ascension marks the beginning of the competition. Up to 100 balloonists pilot balloons to specified targets by directing the aircrafts up or down to catch different air currents. There is tremendous skill along with a bit of luck involved when maneuvering these giants of the sky. Once over their target, the balloonists attempt to hit the “X” with a bean bag. Those landing their bean bags closest to the center score the most points. Cumulative points for all three days of flying determine who wins.

Dawn Patrol: A trademark of The Great Reno Balloon Race and worth the early rise, this show features a handful of balloonists who are qualified to fly in the dark. This is a dangerous task, as atmospheric conditions change drastically as the sun begins to rise. Balloons glow, twinkle and fly along to music and crowd participation on Saturday and Sunday only.

Glow Show: Beginning at 5 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, glowing balloons act as a beacon to sleepy spectators arriving at the launch field. Friday Morning will host an even larger Glow Show for the first time in 2013 beginning at 5 a.m.

E.L. Cord Tissue Paper Balloon Launch: In conjunction with the Washoe County School District, hundreds of students launch tissue paper balloons into the air. Held Friday only.

Balloon Blackjack: Pilots throw markers at jumbo sized playing cards placed on the field. Those hitting a 21 or closest to it, at the center most spot on the cards wins the hand of the day.

Moab Adventure Center creates diverse opportunities to explore a red rock playground that borders both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks allowing visitors to soar above it all in a hot air balloon.

60-minute balloon flights that begin at sunrise with set-up and launch give passengers a bird’s-eye view of multi-colored sandstone formations, mesas, buttes, deep canyon mazes and natural arches. Rates are $259 for adults and youth age six and up.

“It’s obvious why Hollywood chooses this set for westerns and contemporary movies,” said Brandon Lake, Co-Founder of Moab Adventure Center. “It’s truly one of the natural wonders of the world.”

Sights include the rugged red rock canyons carved by the Colorado River, fanciful rock towers and arches and often such wildlife as desert big horn sheep, mountain lion, pronghorn antelope and bald and golden eagles.

Lou Bartell who owns and pilots the six-passenger balloon explains how he showcases this region.

“I enjoy contour or close-to-the-ground flying. This gives a very unique perspective of the landscape. The sensation of climbing over a sandstone butte then watching the ground drop hundreds of feet below you can only be compared to rock climbing. The biggest difference with a flight in Moab to anywhere else is that you are actually a part of the landscape, not just an observer. Conditions permitting, I also like to fly up to 4,000 feet above the valley floor to give everyone an overview of the entire area.”

Bartell assures his guests that credentials for hot air balloon pilots are similar to those for manning fixed wing and rotor-wing aircraft. Pilots must complete a private and commercial ground school and hours of practical training. Bartell maintains a class 2 FAA flight physical for his commercial and instructor ratings. The balloon is a commercially registered FAA aircraft requiring 100 hours of inspections annually. All repairs and maintenance must be performed by a certified FAA repairman with an FAA repair station license.

The rate includes the flight itself, return transportation to the launch site, a post-flight toast ceremony and digital on-ground and in-air photos (upon request).

Yoga Adventures strive to combine the best of a yoga retreat with cultural and adventure opportunities the region has to offer. The yoga on these trips is also more adventurous; yogis should be prepared to practice by a hotel pool or while out traveling. Either way, the yoga will almost always be offered in an atypical location and will require an intrepid and flexible spirit. An example is the Queenstown Yoga Adventure including twice daily yoga and the possibility of speed boating, sky diving, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, wine tasting and more.
