As the rider pulls the chin straps out ward to pull the helmet on, the Com-pression Pad is squeezed against the shell resulting in more room for the rider’s head to enter the helmet.

Once the rider has the helmet on the head and lets go of the chin straps, the Compression Pads spring back into position sealing the cheek pads against the cheeks for a firm, quiet fit.

Helmet Sizing Basics

Proper Helmet Fitting TechniqueESTABLISHING A RIDER’S FITAproperlyfithelmet-tomaximizecomfortandsafety-shouldfitsnuglyaroundthecrownoftherider’sheadinthewaythatabaseballcapmust fit tostayonaplayer’sheadwhenrunningdownaflyball.Theridershouldsensefirm,evenpressurefromthehelmetbutwithoutthepresenceofpressurepoints.

Thesensationshouldbeofthehelmet“cradling”theheadatallpointsandnotoneofit“grabbing”itinonlyafewlimitedareas.

STEP 1. Measure.The firststep to fittingahelmet is tomeasuretherider’sheadwithaclothtapetogetasenseofthestartingpointforthehelmetsize.Measureabovetheeyebrowsandearswhereabaseballcapwouldrest.

STEP 2. Fit the Head and not the Face. Thehelmetmustfittherider’shead first. Ignore the rider’s facial featuresanddimensionsasthesecanbeaccommodatedbyadjustingthecheekpadsize.

FACT:Fittingahelmettoarider’sfaceorcheekscouldresultintheriderbeingfittedforahelmetthatisupto3Xtoolarge!Arai originated the removablecheekpadconcept toensureridersachievedaproper“crownfit”regardlessoftheirfacial/cheekdimensionspreciselytoavoidthissituation.

TIP:Ifariderisobsessedwithcomfortinputtingthehelmeton,firstremovethecheekpadsandthenmakesurethattheriderisproperlypullingthechinstrapsawayfromthecheekssothathelmetopeningisatitswidest.Onceon,fitthehelmettothecrown.Thenreplacethecheekpadsandhavethemtrythehelmetonagainexplainingthataproperly fithelmetwillrequiresomepressurewhenputtingthehelmeton.

STEP 3. Don’t guess! A rider shouldwear a helmet for a shortwhile beforepurchasing it. Fifteenor twentyminuteswalkingaroundtheshopwillgivetheriderafairassessmentofhowwellthehelmetwillfeelduringanextendedrideaswellasgivehimachance to lookaround theshop. Ifat theendof thisperiodthe rider senses any discomfort it should be obvious that itwouldonlybeworseafter2hours.

Ifafterthisshort fittingperiodtheriderfeelsdiscomfortbaseduponpressurepointsinspecificareasasopposedtoageneralsenseofthehelmetbeing“tootight”,orthesizeselectedisthecorrectsizefortherideraccordingtothemeasuringtape,theyshouldtryanAraiwithadifferentheadshape.

Determining a Rider’s Head Shape.AraihelmetinteriorsfortheNorthAmericanmarketsarebaseduponvariationsof anoval shape (slightly longer front-to-backthan side-to-side). Variations in head shape are slight (but critical)whenbaseduponthisovalshapetoaccommodatethewiderangeofheadshapeswithintheAmericanmarkets.

LONGER OVAL (Longer front-to-back, Narrower side-to-side) This fitoffersadditional forehead room for the riderwho findsthat most helmets have pressure points in the forehead.(Signet-Q)

INTERMEDIATE OVAL (Less length front-to-back, Slightlywiderside-to-sidewhencomparedtoLongerOval).ThisfitshapeliesinthemiddlebetweenheadsthataremorepronouncedLongerOvalsorRounderOvals.(RX-Q,Vector-2)

ROUNDER OVAL (Shorter length front-to-back than LongerOvaland IntermediateOval,Slightlywider side-to-sidewhencom-pared to LongerOval). Still based upon an oval, this interiorshapeisfortheriderwhoseheadisfullerwithnoticeablygreat-erwidthwhenlookingtheriderintheface.(Corsair-V)

OpenFace,MXandDualPurpose helmets come in a single interior shapeas thenatureof thesehelmets isdifferent fromtheenclosedstylingofafullfacedhelmet.Theridershouldcon-siderthesehelmetstobeinthemiddleoftheinteriorshapesaslistedabove.(CT-Z,XC,VX-PRO3,XD3)

The Evolution of Interior Helmet ShapesThehumanheadcomesnotonlyindifferentsizesbutindiffer-entshapes.Andasobviousasthismayseem,onlyonehelmetmanufacturerbuildshelmetstofitdifferentshapeheads…Arai.

Imagine engineering a container to hold a series of similarlyshaped objects. Say televisions. Obviously, the preferencewould be to build containers specifically for each televisioninorder toprotect thecontents in thebestwaypossible. Thesecondbest optionwouldbe todesigna seriesof containersthat comeclose to the generic shapeof the televisions suchthat thepackagingcanbe“fine-tuned”toprotect thecontentswithaccessorypackingpieces,becauseaboxthatisthewrongshape(orsize)meanslessprotectionontopofotherproblems.

And if “packaging” is that important fora televisionset than itmustbeevenmore important for apricelesshumanhead.AtleastAraithinksso,whichiswhyAraioffersaseriesofhelmetshapestomaximizefitonepersonatatime.

What’s the big deal?Safetyandcomfort...twoprettybigdeals.

If it is so important, why are helmet interior shapes disregarded by so many companies? Therealityisthatthecommitmenttoofferinghelmetsfine-tunedto the thirddimensionof sizing (length,width andnowmass distribution or helmet shape) is one that only the highest echelonofcompaniescanaffordorwhohavetheknow-howtoachievethroughadvancedresearchandengineering.

Butultimatelyitisnotaquestionofbeingabletoachievesuchagoal,butwantingtoachievesuchagoal.Araialonehasmadethiscommitmenttoitscustomers.

Understanding Interior ShapesFromyearsof talking to riders,wehave found that ridersatis-factionstartswithacorrectfit.Therefore,therider’sunderstand-ingofwhatacorrecthelmetfitisandhowtoachieveitiscriticalinnotonlydetermining thehelmet’sability toperform,but therider’slevelofsatisfactionandcomfortwithhisorherhelmet.

The real i ty of nature d ictates that opt imal com-fort and fit cannot be achieved with a single interi-or helmet shape. It is surely easier on amanufacturer, butit is just as surely not better for the rider. A single inte-rior shape often results in a rider purchasing a larger sizetominimize pressure points due to the very fact that the helmetinteriorshapedoesnotmatchtherider’shead.

Notgoodbecausewearingthewrongsizehelmetintroducesitsownsetofproblems including increasednoiseand thehelmetinstability(movingaroundontherider’shead).Worstyet,wear-ing a helmet that’s too large exposes the rider to “secondaryimpact”whereuponwith impact to theexteriorof thehelmettheheadaccelerates inside thehelmetbeforemakingcontactwiththeprotectiveEPSlinerincreasingtheimpactenergytothebrain.Inessencethismeansthattheriderisnotasprotectedastheywouldbeiftheywerewearingaproperlyfittinghelmet.

MicroFit Liner DesignThe VECTOR-2 features Arai’s latest comfort liner design which features a 5mm Peel-Away Temple Pad Layer that allows the rider to adjust for pressure and fit at the side of the forehead for greater comfort without buying optional liners. It, also, minimizes the use of plastic and maximizes contact with the head resulting in the convenience of a removable liner with the comfort of a full liner. Fully removable and washable.

MicroFit Cheek PadArai’s latest cheek pad design allows the cheek pads to be removed, cleaned and replaced with alternative sizes, and now features a removable 5mm Peel-Away Layer that allows the rider to make custom fit adjustments to his helmet without having to buy additional cheek pads.

Hyper-RidgeArai’s dist inct ive Hyper-Ridge reinforcement band along the bottom of the shell adds reinforcement and shell strength at the shell opening while lowering the helmet’s center of gravity resulting in improved overall “balance” and a lighter feel allowing the helmet to “rest easier” on the head for greater rider comfort.

ESTABLISHInG ACCOUnTSProspective dealers are required to provide proof of dealership status as a legitimate motorsports dealership, and must complete all dealer application forms to become an approved dealer. Upon activation of an account, an account number will be issued and a dealer price list forwarded. Material changes in the business or inactivity for an extended period requires comple-tion of a new account application.

ORDERInGOrders may be placed by phone, on-line, via fax or with a J&D sales rep. Please use your account number and J&D part numbers when ordering to ensure the accuracy of your order.

TERMSAll accounts will be shipped C.O.D., credit card or certified check unless deal-ership has been approved for a company check or an open account.

OPEn ACCOUnTSTo establish credit, an account should submit a Open Account Application with all fields complete including signatures, references and any other documenta-tion requested at that time. Please allow 15 working days for an open account to be approved. A returned check charge of $25 will be assessed on all checks returned for insufficient funds. Overdue accounts are subject to a 1.5% monthly finance charge on past due balance, and will be placed on credit card until the account has been brought up to date. Freight allowances will not be allowed on overdue accounts. If legal action or collection fees are necessary to collect an overdue account, the overdue account will be held responsible for all costs incurred to collect that money.

BACKORDERSMerchandise that is out of stock will automatically be placed on backorder. Backorders received within 30 days will be shipped upon receipt unless oth-erwise advised. RETURnSAll returns require a Return Merchandise Authorization Number (RMA#) issued by J&D Walter Distributors. Packages that do not include the RMA# on the shipping label may be refused at the receiving dock. An RMA# request may be made by contacting a J&D Customer Service Rep at 800-833-3503. FREIGHT CLAIMSTitle to merchandise passes to the customer on delivery to the shipping company. All claims for damage or shortage should be made with the carrier at the time of delivery. Upon arrival of a damaged package, contact the car-rier immediately to arrange for an inspection and/or pick up of the damaged merchandise. Only the recipient can initiate this process as the carrier of record assumes responsibility for the package upon pick up from J&D Walter Distributors. Save the packaging in the condition in which it arrived.
