to our Valued InVestors and frIends:

thank you for your dedication to and investment in South Dakota students for over 45 years. Junior achievement of South Dakota has had the opportunity to impact students since 1968, and each year we are humbled by the support received from our investors, volunteers, educators, and board members. this year alone, Ja of South Dakota impacted 47,619 students across the state.

as Ja program offerings have evolved over the years, the mission of the organization has remained the same – to inspire and prepare students to succeed. the Ja model of introducing students to a community volunteer while learning about work readiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship continues to see great results. We appreciate your support as we have expanded our reach, utilized new technologies, and added enhancements to ensure our students receive the best experience possible.

Junior achievement of South Dakota continues to be one of the strongest Ja areas in the country, and we owe that success to the commitment of our many supporters. Without your investment of time, talent, and treasure, South Dakota students would not have the opportunity to learn from leaders in their community. Ja volunteers generously give their time to share personal experiences and encourage students to complete their education and reach for their dreams. It is the partnership between business and education that makes Junior achievement experiences meaningful and important.

In the pages that follow, you will learn about the successes of the past year. We are eager to see what the future will bring for Junior achievement and our students, and we look forward to your continued involvement in the years to come.

on behalf of the Junior achievement of South Dakota staff, Board of Directors, and more than 47,000 students, please accept our sincere thanks for your commitment to empower the future.

the Ja excelling through ethics program was designed to help students understand the role of ethics in the workplace and life. through a partnership with 35 schools across the state, nearly 7,000 students met and interacted with executives to discuss “real world” scenarios that require

an ethical decision-making process and learn about the importance of ethics in the workplace. During the 2012-13 school year, Ja excelling through ethics was supported and presented by over 300 executive-level volunteers representing 25 Ja communities.

BeComInG a Volunteerfor Junior achievement

Volunteers play a key role in bringing Junior achievement to life. By sharing their personal and professional experiences and skills with students, they help them make the connection between what students are learning in school and what they will need to succeed in work and life. Junior achievement makes volunteering fulfilling and offers flexible scheduling options. our curriculum provides everything needed to make participation in Ja interactive and engaging for students.

In as little as an hour a week, you can make a difference in the lives of young people. Your Junior achievement experience will leave you feeling proud, energized, and

hopeful about a better future for our young people.

Volunteer requIrements:• Attend a training session.• Teach five to twelve one-hour sessions with pre-developed Ja materials and hands-on activities.• Encourage student success by sharing your real-world experiences.

thank You!over 2,100 volunteers made a difference by teaching Ja programs in classrooms this year. to see the list of volunteers or to become a volunteer this school year, visit www.jasd.org.

My favorite experience was when a young man came up and shook my hand and said, “thank you, I actually learned something.”

lorI sutton: (educator)as an educator and parent, I see the impact Junior achievement has had on my

students and my own children. Junior achievement makes arrangements for community leaders to bring their first-hand knowledge into the classroom. these leaders enhance each lesson by applying hands-on learning in a fun and educational way. this helps students make a

connection between school and businesses in the real world. I feel it is important for students to develop these life skills in order to enter the work force with confidence. All in all, Junior achievement is helping mold our students into future business leaders of tomorrow.

mark Joffer: (Volunteer)For the past several years, I’ve had the pleasure of being a Ja volunteer in my son’s classroom at parker elementary School. as a parent, it’s been great to have a front row seat in seeing my son’s knowledge of business and commerce grow. I’m amazed at how quickly he and his classmates have picked up on the concepts covered in our Ja

class and how they retain many of those concepts well after the class has ended. I’m convinced that this knowledge will give my son a distinct advantage when the time comes for him to enter the workforce.

also, being a Ja Volunteer has been a great way to get to know my son’s classmates in a more personal way. In fact, many of them greet me when they see me on the street or at an event. there is no doubt in my mind that my contact with them as a Ja volunteer has been directly responsible for that.

tIm Graf: (superintendent)Ja is a great school-community partnership with kids as the beneficiaries. JA promotes critical thinking and problem solving in areas such as financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and work readiness and does so effectively. We are very fortunate to have a strong Ja program to fill the gaps in our curriculum!

kelseY kneCht: (student)I have been involved with Junior achievement starting in kindergarten through my sophomore year in high school. I remember having my dad for my Ja teacher throughout elementary school, where the class participated in games and activities that taught us lessons in business and the economy. I specifically remember the session of my sophomore year, which was Ja excelling through ethics. the ethical lessons taught by my Ja consultant are invaluable and will help me to make the right decisions in the tough situations I am faced with in the future. I have discovered that

every choice I make affects someone else and that I need to take responsibility for my actions. I feel that life lessons

like these, taught by Junior achievement consultants, will help attribute to success in the future.
